Illumink:

Glowing tattoos

Few people know about the origins of Illuminking. Most people who partake in it are just the youth of the galaxy looking to be the talk of the club or trying to be edgy. Illuminking is much like tattooing in the traditional sense though instead of it being a simple metal, vegetable or plastic based ink it utilizes phosperous. There are a few species that can survive (and sometimes require alternate) additions to the process but they are quite rare to the normal main stream Illuminking.

The origins of Illuminking was a military one. One use was when secret messages long ago needed to be transcribed and communicated to friendly forces. This wasn't done on the flesh of individuals but were used on items the spy might have on them at the time. There was also a time when this ink was used to literally paint targets and their supply lines by rebels and inssurgents. Come nightfall the wearers of said paint would be brightly lit and were subject to easy targeting of harmful attacks or just mockery.

Now Illumink has become a common sight in the underworlds of some planets. Gangsters might have invisible tattoos in the daylight of the planet in plain view of the law enforcement but in the dark recesses of the nifarious world they show their true colors quite literally. Some people with more artistic intents use them just like they would normal tattoos, being specifically poinient towards the limited sight or some poetic shpeal they repeat to their friends. Many just cover existing tattoos with illumink to have the same work visible in just a different light, the possibilities are endless.

Each design is different and unique both to the 'canvas' as well as the artist.

This is a particularly popular artistic media with young Kiffar and Shorak near-human species. Other species that use tattooes and body modification have started adopting the style albiet in limited amounts. Younger generations are the primary adopters of these modifications.

In nifarious parts of the galaxy slavers mark their 'catches' with illumink so they are easier to spot if trying to escape at night. The owners and buyers of the slaves will further mark their property if they are of an attractive appearance. Dancers are subject to tattooes against their will so that normal tattoos do not make them less attractive to patrons of their owners.

The name, Illumink is not to be confused with the planet of Ilum. The name itself is a combination of illumination and ink. However the ink is far from normal and sometimes has exotic chemicals from equally exotic animals or plants. Some companies synthesize their ink. However since this is a new fad there is little regulation on safety for illumink. Alergic reactions, or chemicals sometimes toxic to one species and not the other, find their way into tattoo shops. sometimes artists have to do their art off the books. Even official tattoos can not be one hundred percent guaranteed for safety. Some planets are doing their best to adapt, whether it is to come down hard and outlaw illumink or to enstate safety regulations. Regardless it seems illuminking is growing.

~Intent~ My own Shorak character will be exploring this "fad" in the future and making it a story building for other characters who also do body modification as well. I want it to be something that adds layers to the meaning of tattoos in all areas of society.
