  • There is nothing more absurd, as I view it, than that conventional association of the homely and the wholesome which seems to pervade the psychology of the multitude. To those of more bucolic temperament it is difficult to surmise a world wherein our greatest fears dwell not in realms of storybook fancy, but within the unflinching light of reality; and to relate these facts to them is to invite nothing less than the most provocative derision that condemns as madness the glimpses of super-sight which pierce the common veil of obvious empiricism.

    Yet there are those of broader intellect, men and women of thicker fibre, who recognize that there is no sharp distinction betwixt the seen and the unseen. That all things appear as they do only by virtue of the frail mental lens through which we perceive them.

    Since the earliest days of my childhood I have been such an individual; a dreamer and a visionary unfitted for the formal studies and recreations of my peers. Since childhood have I dwelt ever in realms apart from the visible world; spending my youth and adolescence in ancient books, and in roaming the fields and groves near my ancestral home. I do not believe what I read in these books or saw in those groves were what others read and saw there; but of this I must say little, for detailed speech would but confirm the cruel slanders upon my intellect which I sometimes overhear from the whispers of leering attendants.

    Whether my testimony of events as I can best relate them will be met with skepticism or open mockery, these pages will show; though I fear doubt of the real facts, as I must reveal them, is inevitable. Yet if I suppressed what must seem extravagant there would be nothing left.

    To begin, I must confess to some degree of confusion, for at times I feel my memories as appalling vistas of ageless centuries stretching behind me, whilst at others it is as if the present exists as an isolated point in a gray, formless infinity. I have said that I dwelt apart from the earthly realms of the physical, but I have not said that I dwelt alone. This no creature may do, for lacking fellowship of the living, one inevitably must draw upon the company of things that are not, or are no longer, living. Close by my home there lay a wooded hollow, within whose twilight depths I spent much of my time; reading, thinking, dreaming.

    Down its moss covered paths my first steps of infancy were taken, and among its gnarled brylark trees my first girlhood fancies were woven. Well did I come to know the presiding spirits of those trees, and often have I watched their macabre dances in the struggling beams of a waning moon; but of these things I must not now speak. Instead I will tell only of the lone tomb in the darkest of hillside thickets; the deserted resting place of ancient power faded yet still thrumming with its deep earthly roots. I shall never forget the afternoon when first I stumbled upon that half hidden vault.

    It was mid-summer, when the alchemy of nature transmutes the landscape to one of verdant homogeneity. In such surroundings the mind loses its perspective; time and space become surreal, and echoes of a long forgotten past beat insistently upon the enthralled consciousness. All day I had been wandering the mystic depths of the wooded grove, thinking thoughts I need not share, and conversing with things I need not name. Scarcely a child of ten, I had seen and heard many wondrous things, and was oddly aged in certain respects. When, upon forcing my way through a clump of briers, I suddenly encountered the entrance of the tomb, I had no knowledge of what I had discovered.

    Excavated back into the hillside, the structure was visible only at the entrance. Its door, a ponderous and foreboding slab of stone, was fastened ajar in a strangely sinister way as if to brook exploration of its chilly, hallowed depths. The funerary carvings etched into the dark, water-worn granite above the arch aroused me in no maudlin or frightened fashion. Of graves and tombs I knew and imagined much, but had on account of my peculiar temperament been kept from all personal contact with such things. The strange cairn upon the woodland slope was to me only a source of interest and speculation; and in that instant of curiosity was kindled my yearning for exploration.

    Spurred on by a voice which must have come from the very heart of that wicked forest, I resolved to enter the beckoning gloom. I began my descent in the waning light of day, whereupon my path was impeded by a second door festooned with heavy chains in accordance to the grotesque practices of millennias long forgotten. I alternately rattled the rusty impediments and essayed to squeeze my slight form through; but neither plan met with success. At first curious, I was now frantic; and when in the thickening twilight I returned home, I had sworn to the spirits of the grove that I would some day force an entrance to the black, chilly depths that seemed calling out to me.
  • The months following my discovery were spent in futile attempts to force the barricades of the tomb, and in carefully guarded inquiries regarding the nature and history of the structure.
