DESCRIPTION
So-called "Ugly" ships, that is to say spacecraft cobbled together from readily available and often mismatched parts, are a phenomenon which has existed for millennia at the fringes of Galactic society, but it is an "art" which arguably reached its zenith in the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War. Wrecked starships from both sides of the conflict were in plentiful supply, and many enterprising individuals looted old battlefields for any junk they could find. Some of the more technically minded scavengers cobbled their prizes together into unique creations of their own design, the Y-TIE starbomber being one common configuration.

Unlike its ill-conceived sibling, the woeful "TYE" starfighter, the Y-TIE starbomber is overall an improvement on both of its "parents," combining the best aspects of the TIE/LN starfighter and the BTL-A4 Y-Wing. The Y-TIE retains the Y-Wing's heavy armament and durable design, while at the same time incorporating the Twin Ion Engine assembly of the TIE/LN, granting it increased speed and maneuverability. Like the Y-Wing, the Y-TIE is equipped with a pair of fixed medium laser cannons in the nose, a dorsal ion turret and an ordinance launcher, capable of delivering either 8 torpedoes or 8 bombs. In addition, the ship also carries the Y-Wing's shields, class 1 hyperdrive and astromech socket. Though not quite as fast as a TIE, the ship can push 90 MGLT, a significant improvement from the original's 75.

Of course, the configuration discussed above is an ideal scenario, assuming that every component the builder has scavenged from an old battlefield or scrap heap to create their Y-TIE is fully functional. By their very nature, no two Y-TIEs are exactly the same in terms of configuration and capability. Owing to the wide availability of its component parts, the Y-TIE is a common configuration for home-built and otherwise improvised vessels. Although some rare examples are built with great care by talented engineers without access to better resources, most are built without much skill or care at all. As a result, they are almost universally of poor quality, leading to significant reliability issues. Though they may outperform their parents in certain aspects, a well maintained stock TIE or Y-Wing is still likely to fly circle around a janky, cobbled-together Y-TIE.

TYEs and similar Ugly vessels are most commonly built and used by pirates and other criminals, although private citizens and even some cash-strapped military and paramilitary agencies have been known to use them in the absence of anything better.

LEGALITY
Legal. Though they are technically starbombers, Y-TIEs are considered to be home-built spacecraft under most jurisdictions, circumventing many restrictions.

INTENT
To create a low-end, improvised light starbomber.
