DESCRIPTION
So-called "Ugly" ships, that is to say spacecraft cobbled together from readily available and often mismatched parts, are a phenomenon which has existed for millennia at the fringes of Galactic society, but it is an "art" which arguably reached its zenith in the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War. Wrecked starships from both sides of the conflict were in plentiful supply, and many enterprising individuals looted old battlefields for any junk they could find. Some of the more technically minded scavengers cobbled their prizes together into unique creations of their own design, resulting in designs such as the so-called "War Baby."

Although no "Ugly" is truly the same as any other, the the "War Baby" represents an extreme example of what can happen when a scavenger with a little technical know-how and access to a lot of war surplus junk gets creative. Cobbled together from parts belonging to the X-Wing, Y-Wing and TIE series, it is a nightmarish hybrid of all of the Galactic Civil War's combatants; the type incorporates strengths and weaknesses from all of its "parents," though like most Ugly starfighters its mannerisms largely depend on the skill and care - or lack thereof - with which it was built.

The War Baby incorporates the cockpit pod of a TIE series starfighter, the upper wing assemblies of a TIE/IN interceptor, the rear fuselage of a Y-Wing starbomber, two Y-Wing engines and, finally, 1 engine and 2 laser cannons belonging to an X-Wing. They usually mount a total of 6 laser cannons - those of the TIE cockpit, the interceptor wings and the two from the X-Wing - giving them a healthy amount of firepower, although the standard TIE targeting computer has trouble synchronizing all weapons on a single point without fine-tuning that is beyond most pirate tech crews. The War Baby is usually equipped with a Y-Wing's class 1 hyperdrive, although lacking an astromech socket it must rely on whatever navicomputer its builder was able to find. The type also lacks any kind of shielding, unfortunately, and so its combat durability is somewhat questionable.

Notably, the War Baby's speed is actually quite decent, averaging 110 MGLT due to its abundance of engines. It uses both the TIE and Y-Wing reactors, sparing it from the power difficulties experienced by some other Ugly designs. Maneuverability is only decent, however, owing to its odd center of gravity and the improvised nature of its control systems.

The War Baby, owing to the wide availability of its component parts, is a common configuration for home-built and otherwise improvised starfighters. Although some rare examples are built with great care by talented engineers without access to better resources, most are built without much skill or care at all. As a result, they are almost universally of poor quality, leading to significant reliability issues. Though they are perfectly adequate for menacing a waylaid freighter or passenger liner, they are typically no match for proper starfighters or other warships without a truly skilled pilot at the controls.

War Babies and similar Ugly starfighters are most commonly built and used by pirates and other criminals, although private citizens and even some cash-strapped military and paramilitary agencies have been known to use them in the absence of anything better.

LEGALITY
Legal. Though they are technically starfighters, War Babies are considered to be home-built spacecraft under most jurisdictions, circumventing many restrictions.

INTENT
To create an example of a mid-range Ugly starfighter.
