DESCRIPTION
The V38 Assault Starfighter is a tri-foil snubfighter developed by an Imperial research facility on the planet Imdaar during the Galactic Civil War, which subsequently became the Imdaar Astroneering Works after the Galactic Empire's collapse. Though it used many components common to the Sienar Fleet Systems TIE line, including the titular Twin Ion Engine, the V38 was developed largely without Sienar's involvement, and thus did not receive a TIE designation, despite its close resemblance to other starfighters and starbombers of that type.

The V38 Assault Starfighter is exactly what it says it is. Developed to emulate Rebel hit-and-hype tactics, the V38 is equipped with a class 1 hyperdrive, highly unusual for an Imperial snubfighter, as well as a quintet of forward-firing medium laser cannons, capable of shredding most opponents. The ship has an elongated cockpit canopy, giving it superior peripheral visibility compared to standard TIEs, endearing it to many pilots. Maneuverability is excellent, and top speed is a respectable 100 MGLT. The V38 has many weaknesses common to TIEs as well, however; it possesses no deflector shields, for one thing, and lacks an integrated life support system, requiring pilots to wear a full environmental suit outside of a planetary atmosphere.

Though an excellent fighter, especially in its day, the V38 ran counter to standard Imperial starfighter doctrine, which emphasized large swarms of short-range machines supported by mobile carrier vessels or in-system bases. The idea of emulating rebel tactics was seen as distasteful by Imperial high command. Nevertheless, the type did see limited production during the Imperial era, being used almost exclusively by the Imdaar defensive garrison. V38s were flown against Rebel heavy bombers during raids against the Imperial supply depot located on the planet, as well as various military factories also located there.

During the later part of the Galactic Civil War, rumors circulated that the Empire used the V38 as the basis of a specialized TIE variant, the TIE/PH "TIE Phantom" stealth starfighter, which was reported to incorporate a miniaturized cloaking device into its design. Though some evidence exists to suggest that such a project was undertaken, it is believed that only small numbers were built before the development lab and blueprints were destroyed by Rebel operatives. No TIE Phantoms are known to survive in the present day.

After the fall of the Empire, the V38 became an important part of Imdaar's post-war reconstruction efforts, being widely exported to planets looking to rebuild their local military forces, as well as mercenaries and other private customers. The type remains in production to this day, and is seen as a good alternative to the X-Wing series manufactured by Incom-FreiTek.

LEGALITY
Restricted. V38 Assault Starfighters are, of course, starfighters, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create add a vessel from Star Wars Legends to our site's fanon.
