Hey everyone,

It’s been a few weeks since we announced the return to freeform RP, so we wanted to give you an update on some of the decisions that have been made so you have a sense of where we’re headed with this new (old?) system.

As you may know, we said in the original thread that we decided to keep sub-accounts as a mandatory feature on the site, so anyone who RPs will be using a sub-account. That conversation had a lot of good feedback on both sides, but toward the end it got a bit heated so we do want to stress moving forward to make sure that disagreement isn’t disagreeable. We want to hear all perspectives and then make decisions from there.

Here’s some of the decisions we’ve made that we can announce today:
  • The Plot System is being removed. The current system mandates that plots be approved by staff. This will be completely removed. Plots, whether they be faction plots or individual plots, will no longer be subject to staff approval. There will be basic rules to ensure threads are reasonable, but it'll be largely based on trusting the user to play fair. Staff will only step in when absolutely necessary. Those rules will be announced at a later date.
  • What about current plots? Plots already underway will go through the current plot system, and users are encouraged to keep writing what they had planned. But no new plots will be going through a review and approval process. Admins should only be notified of any plots that impact the galaxy or entire planets. Ongoing plots do not need to be submitted for completion.
  • Death by permission ONLY. Moving forward, your character cannot die unless you give permission. We are going to continue to heavily deemphasize competitive, death-oriented PvP and continue to emphasize storytelling. That means that if your character is going to die, it’s only when you decide that you’re ready for your character to die. If there’s PvP, we leave it up to individual players to decide whether death makes the most sense as an outcome to that fight.
  • Death Enabled threads are allowed. Although death is disabled by default, members can agree ahead of time if a thread carries the risk of death. This must be done by mutual agreement so everyone involved is aware of what type of thread they’re entering.
  • Staff won’t rule on PvP. Given that death is disabled by default, we’re not going to accept requests for rulings on PvP or whether a character dies. It’s collaborative, not competitive, so the expectation will be that members are able to resolve issues amongst themselves. We also expect that the need for any review requests would be significantly reduced given the removal of risk toward individual characters. We also won’t accept reviews if you decide to enter a Death Enabled thread. If you accept the risk of death, you assume the responsibility of resolving any disputes with your fellow RPers.
  • Espionage rules will be reviewed. Given that death is disabled by default, that means that we won’t be allowing plots around assassination, bombings, etc that would kill other characters without their permission. We’ll be reviewing espionage rules to decide what makes sense given this new setup.
  • We’re removing staff approval of characters. Staff review and approval of characters is a relatively new concept on SWRP based on the current system, and was not something we did in our old freeform system. We will be removing staff review and approval of characters. In a freeform system, issues are generally caught by organic community review and moderation. Any violation of our limited character rules can be flagged to staff.
  • Faction Leader characters will be PCs. We noted this somewhere in the original thread, but members will now play faction leader characters. We don’t yet know if that means people will assume the current NPCs as PCs or if PCs will ascend to those leadership positions. We also don’t know who those members will be yet or how they will be chosen. More info to come.
  • Ranking up will be decided by Faction Leaders. We will be removing the staff review system for character rank ups. As was done in the old freeform system, ranking up within main factions will be at the discretion of the Faction Leaders.
  • Character faction changes are at faction leader approval. If you want your Jedi character to fall to the dark side and become a Sith, for example, this does not need staff approval. If you want to switch factions, the faction leader will approve that. If you want to just fall to the dark side or be redeemed, though, that’s up to you. Write your character’s journey in whatever way you think makes the most sense, and ask the faction leader to join whatever faction you want. You will still need to request changes to your character account user banner.
  • Tech updates coming soon. We’re going to have another thread soon all about tech and how that will fit into the RP. Largely we’ll be relying on users acting within reason regarding tech. More info to come.
  • Staff will focus on events and story. The staff’s time has been taken up by mechanics and approvals. We don’t think that’s the best use of our time. While the beauty of freeform is that the overall direction is ultimately up to members, the staff will still be available to help provide and shape events and site storylines. Remember what we said at the beginning of this timeline about how we’re going to stick to this setting and apply new stories on top of it? That’s still true, and we’ll let what members do be our guide as we introduce new overarching storylines.
That covers it for now. We’ll continue to update you as we make more decisions. In the meantime, please post any questions you have. Thanks!

Awesome so glad we don’t need character approval now! This allows even more creativity when making characters.

So if I want my indie character to become a Jedi I would have to go through the Faction Leader for that? Just making sure, because a lot of times I have characters that start from basically nothing and evolve as the story progresses.

Can creators of Open threads (if no other pre-planned fellow participants and of course explicitly stated) have threads, in creation, be death-enabled, or do they have to individually ask joiners each time if they want to have/keep death-enabled?

EDIT:

With the removal of staff approval of profiles, will the rules regarding length of profiles (less than 10k) be removed?

Its great to hear about these changes! I'm looking forward to getting back into things.

I am guessing details are still being worked out but will the current indie faction system be changing? From what I have seen from the current system it seems to discourage indie faction creation. Kind of a detriment to the freeform system IMO, considering on a few occasions in the past indie factions have actually had big impacts on timelines.

A thought on the espionage plots.... Why not, assuming anyone would actually want there character to die from espionage, have a system that would allow the target some choice in what happens? Say an "assassination" plot and the target can choice between death, imprisonment (could be rescued), or something else reasonable after the plot has been completed and the espionage revealed.

Also, I don't care how creepy it is but I have just discovered the Jabba drool reaction and have decided to use it in place of the like. You all have been warned!

I think these changes all sound very positive and I'm looking forward to them being implemented. I'm only fairly new and the barriers that the old system put up did feel quite limiting. Also, it must have been hell for the staff trying to run it.

I might be being dense (very likely), but is plot approval over as of right now, or when the new rules come in? If we had a plot idea that we'd like to run, would it be better to hold off until things are a little more formalised?

I've enjoyed a lot of the writing I've done on here and I'm looking forwards to getting back into it more now. Thanks!

Hopefully I didn't miss any questions here but if so let me know.

Correct. You're basically signing up for a faction at that point so it'd go through that same OOC FL review (which is usually simple and straightforward).

Can creators of Open threads (if no other pre-planned fellow participants and of course explicitly stated) have threads, in creation, be death-enabled, or do they have to individually ask joiners each time if they want to have/keep death-enabled?

I want to say probably, but I also don't want to commit to a firm yes at this point because we'll want to make sure that this doesn't get abused and DE threads are thrown up left and right.

We haven't talked about what profile rules will be yet so I couldn't say at this point.

Similar to the above we haven't talked about indie factions yet, so currently unsure.

I like this idea. We can discuss it.

Plot approval is over as of right now.

Yeah, that'd be my worry too. Last thing you want in going into an Open thread, where you are already gambling on your experience, is to also wade through a minefield of death enabled threads.

I wonder if a "Death" tag for death enabled "Open" threads might help avoid some of the abuse and confusion issues. If anything it would at least let members know easily if a thread is and allow staff to see how many there are at a given time.

My only reservation is if it was treated at the thread level that it would do to the Open threads section what the main story section is already experiencing with Ask/Closed threads. I like the player to player interaction that comes from having to talk with another member about character death. That's something we won't rightly know until they do it though.

So uninventive.

I propose a Hutt airstrike.

In that you literally just drop Hutts on people.

>.>

This did get me thinking about something though, so, a suggestion: moving forward, if the meta shifts too much one way or the other (whichs its bound to over time), but if things do get out of hand again and you want to rein in the community, hopefully we can resort to just....community announcements openly discussing an issue in the meta of the site and how people are RPing and what you'd like to see shift moving forward - so for example if the tech boards became over-emphasised again to a point it became problematic, just make an announcement reminding people of the intended use, rather than resorting to introducing new rules and mechanics straight away.

Like don't get me wrong, I get the reasoning behind wanting to introduce mechanics or rules or oversight to prevent rule violations, but as we've all seen, it's very easy for all of those little rules to have a cumulative effect that results in the kind of situation the site's in now, and maybe just advising the community with some firm reminders from time to time might be a better approach to prevent history repeating itself?
