A single shuttle carrying two Sith lanced through the unyielding rains of Kamino towards the ruined shell of Tipoca City. On board was Vex, a Sith Master for many weeks now, and her apprentice, Caer. A couple of weeks had passed since his first lessons were completed. Vex had fully accepted him as her apprentice, which meant they needed to go on a mission together. The only way he would get real experience was in the real galaxy, and Kamino was relatively safe enough for him to practice his novice skills without harming himself or jeopardizing the mission.

Vex had stayed silent for most of the flight. The news that the Empress Darth Andruil was resigning was only days old and the idea that she was no longer running the Empire was settling in Vex's mind. Just a fortnight ago, they had been in the gardens together on Serenno. It seemed surreal to think they were under a new Empress now. What did that mean? For the war effort... For everything... Vex didn't have answers. So, she would do what she always did. Bury herself in work.

The shuttle landed on a rain-slicked platform on the edge of the city. Vex was wearing her armor to shield from the weather and had advised her apprentice to wear suitable attire to their mission. Once they were outside, rain lashing at them like needle darts slung from an unforgiving sky, Vex turned and spoke loudly over the roar of the miles-high waves roiling below. "This is an official mission," she reminded him. "We will be limiting your training here to practicality because I will be needed to perform certain tasks." Under her helmet, she raised her brow at him, challenging. "But you can start us off. You've been reading those grimoires I gave you, yes? Then you should know the basic probing spell used by Sith sorcerers to search for danger."

It would be easy to perform on Kamino. With the rain as a sound Caer could focus on to enter the trance state, he would then just need to let the Force ripple out from him like a sonar, then command it to return, just as they had practiced on Korriban. "Do it and tell me which of these buildings we're going to first." @LouJoVi

From the planets that existed in the Galaxy, Kamino once was never one that Caerllion thought about visiting. While nearly a century ago it was probably a fascinating place, full with the Kaminoans cloning facilities, now it was only a graveyard of an era that would never return.

At first, he was a bit confused with the reasons why Vex and he were going on a mission on this planet. After the Empire bombarded it after the Clone Wars ended, there wasn’t much left here beyond some ruins. When he learned that his Master planned to turn this place into a facility for the Sith, the Annfyn thought that it wasn’t a good idea. Tipoca city was mostly destroyed, there was much work for them to do before it was habitable again.

Caerllion felt relieved when the ship that they were on arrived in Kamino. Vex had remained oddly silent during the entire trip, which was a bit strange for the Acolyte’s opinion. She used to be more talkative. He wondered if she was acting this way because there was a new Empress.

Perhaps she feared that the change in the administration would affect her position as the jailer of the Empire. His Master probably wasn’t the only one fearing this change, many other high-ranking Sith were afraid what would happen with them now. While it was too soon to see what was going to happen, Caerllion was certain that in this scenario the only one that was well was Andruil. She probably was having her retirement riding rancors or throwing curses at people in Dathomir, whenever the Nightsisters did in their free time these days.

After their shuttle landed, Caerllion followed Vex outside. It was with zero surprise that the Annfyn noticed the downpour that was falling. It was Kamino, after all. A surprise would be if there was no rain. The Acolyte always thought that was amusing how, even with them being amphibians, the Kaminoans lived comfortably inside buildings, away from the rain. Perhaps not even them tolerate the terrible weather of their homeworld.

He was grateful for hearing Vex’s advice and coming with an outfit that would protect him from this rain. If not even the inhabitants of this place tolerated it, he doubted that he would be able to stand it.

Yes, Master.” Caerllion said, after Vex finished explaining what they were going to do now. The grimoires that she gave to him were very enlightening. After reading them, he had learned some very useful abilities. His favorite were ilusion incantations. Meddling with the mind of others was an interesting concept.

He walked in front of Vex, with his face turned to what remained of the buildings of Tipoca city. Then, he closed his eyes and raised his hands toward the ruins. Murmuring the incantations that he had learned, Caerllion would feel as if a pulsing wave would leave his body and move through the Force. Once it was enough, he would command it to return to him.

This building here.” he said, pointing to one that was closest to them. This was also one of the few that didn’t have any part collapsed in the water. “I felt something here. We should start looking at this one.

Vex nodded sharply, her way of letting Caer know he had done well. And then they were both off, striding through the torrential downpours towards the building he had indicated. Inside was hardly a reprieve from the weather. Holes punched through the superstructure by Imperial turbolasers over a century prior opened the interior of the Kaminoan building to the elements. None of the machinery would work—on this level, at least.

A half-opened door sat opposite her. Vex raised a hand to it and tore it off its hinges with the Force, opening the path for them. Then they were descending into darkness. Only sparking wires lit their path; but the sparking was a good thing. It meant there was a source of electricity still somewhere below. They just needed to find it.

She paused momentarily, cocking her head as she probed the currents of the Force. Something was indeed in here. But not something she was looking for. A danger centuries old. She was well aware of Sheev Palpatine's paranoia by now, having experienced it first hand on Belsavis. Had he also left a guardian to prevent the secrets of Kamino from ever falling into the hands of a rival? If so, he would fail as he had on Belsavis. Her world.

"Prepare yourself," she said, summoning the Force to her. "You are still young, my apprentice. But it is time for you to see precisely how far Sith are willing to go to protect their secrets."

A tremor in the Force told her that their pursuers had arrived. Old Imperial terror soldiers. Half-a-dozen of them, by her count, all invisible to the eye. She had heard Vader's pet projects were horrendous to behold. Droids, yes, but not the easily killable kind. His personal assassins, deployed by his master the Emperor, to protect secrets Sidious wished to keep that way.

Well, Vex wasn't going to let them get the jump on her. Violet ichor filled her hands and, by thrusting them outward, she cast a spell that would shred their invisibility. It worked. All six terror soldiers flickered into sight, appearing one by one in a ring around her and her apprentice. "Fight," she told him. "Fight as if your life depended on it." @LouJoVi

Dice: Rolled 20 from a d20 for difficulty - since that's a critical failure, this means is that we're going to roll for each move we make until all six terror soldiers are down. Prepare to take some damage =/

Also rolled 14 from a d20 for my opening move, so that's why we can see them now. Good luck!

Caerllion noticed Vex’s nod and understood that it was her way of praising his actions. Since they had become Master and Apprentice, the Annfyn had learned that the woman wasn’t the most talkative Sith. He didn’t mind it, the Acolyte also didn’t talk that much with others too.

He followed Vex close to the building. Now that they were close, he could see the state that the Empire had left this place. The shots of the turbolaser had caused holes in the roof and now the water of the rain could enter here. No one ever returned to this place again. Caerllion wondered why the Kaminoans never tried to recolonize the planet after the fall of the Galactic Empire.

The Annfyn watched the other Sith open the door and then followed her into the darkness. Occasionally, some sparks would illuminate their path. While the presence of energy was good, it brought the question of how this could be possible. It has been centuries since this place was visited for the last time. Caerllion had the feeling that he wasn't going to like the answer for it.

In the end, the Annfyn was right to be wary of the reasons for the building still having energy. After hearing Vex warning and seeing her cast a spell to reval their enemy, the Acolyte finally was able to see the Imperial terror soldiers. He had heard the stories about them. How they were implacable droids used by Darth Vader. They probably were the reason why the Kaminoans never returned to this planet.

The fight didn’t even start and they were already surrounded by the droids. Caerllion could see that there were six of them, but he knew that it wasn’t good. If the stories were correct, this number was already enough to cause good damage to the two Sith before they could even bring two of them down.

"Yes, Master." the Annfyn said to his Master, before deciding to make the first move. Since he had started to train with Vex, the Acolyte was training to fight like her, only using the Korriban magick. Due to that, he released a blast of red energy against the closest droid. Unfortunately, he still wasn’t good with such abilities and miscalculated the intensity of the blast. Due to that, it only collided against the droid and left it without even a small scratch.

This fight has already started well…

Vex wasn't fairing much better. Despite being better trained and having more experience, the terror soldiers were ferocious and fought with a hard-to-follow style. The most she could do to hold them back was to coat her hands in ichor and use it as a protective barrier against their bladed attacks while she searched for an opening. She was distracted by the way her apprentice was fighting, a pale imitation of herself. And was that Korriban magick he was trying to use? Without having attended the proper ritual?

"Caer," she grunted through clenched teeth as she fended off another round of attacks. "Use your lightsaber. This is no time or place to be practicing a new style."

Just then, a horrible creaking sound lanced through her ears. She whirled to find one of the terror soldiers prying open a panel and letting water pour in from the outside. Rapidly, the chamber beneath their feet filled with water. Vex stumbled backwards, struggling to stay upright in the sudden current. A terror soldier took the opportunity to lunge at her and she telekinetically caught its wrist at the last moment, staggering it backwards with a small hex blast.

An idea occurred to her then. There was more than one way to win a fight, to clear a room of enemies. She just needed time. A luxury, considering the situation they found themselves in, but she refused to baby Caer. She had chosen him as her apprentice. He had the skill. He just needed to be made to use it. "Hold them back for just a moment," she commanded him. "Buy me a minute, maybe two. There is something I need to try."

And with that, she began probing the metal tiles, now covered by water, with the Force for weakness. She also scanned the ceiling above them. It would be a last resort, but a Sith needed to take gambles from time to time. And Vex was determined not to lose to a couple of thrown away soldiers, relics of another age. @LouJoVi

Dice: Rolled a 9 out of a d20. Fail but not a critical fail. Vex holds off the soldiers, but the room begins to flood.

Caerllion only nodded when Vex said that it wasn’t the moment for him to try a new battle style. He didn’t need his Master to remember him, the Annfyn had noticed that when his blast of energy did not even scratch the soldier. The young man immediately activated his lightsaber and prepared for what would come next.

What happened was worse than what Caerllion could have expected. One of terror soldiers broke a panel in one of the walls, allowing the water from outside to enter in the room. It rapidly started to fill the place, soon the two Sith would not have more space to breathe. They needed to do something immediately.

Yes, Master.” Caerllion answered Vex, after having used his lightsaber to defend himself of the attack from one of the terror soldiers. He moved to stay in front of his Master, this way he would be able to block the approach of the enemy. The Acolyte wasn’t so sure that he would be able to fend off the six of them for a long time, she would need to work fast.

While Vex used the Force on the metal tiles, Caerllion tried to stop the soldiers from approaching her. When one of them moved his right arm to hit him, the Annfyn moved his lightsaber down and cut it off. He didn’t expect that doing it would be so easy, perhaps the years damaged the structure of the droid’s arm.

However, the soldier didn’t even stop. Caerllion couldn’t react to defend himself when it moved his left hand and slapped the Annfyn with enough strength to send him flying. He would collide against the same metal tiles that Vex was probing. While he grunted with pain, the Acolyte thought how this mission was getting worse and worse.

Her plan had failed.

Vex was trying her best to use the Force to cave in certain floor panels, which would sweep their assailants down into the oceans below. But while she was still probing, her apprentice landed on a tile entirely too close to her. It gave, sending them both plunging through open, rainy air towards a roiling, angry ocean. Quickly, Vex opened herself to the Force, searching for that pulse of her that resonated with Korriban so far away. Then, she lauched herself through the air towards a low hanging, rainswept platform.

She crashed and rolled to her feet before turning and reaching out with her magic to catch her falling apprentice. It was a hastily cast spell, and he was heavy; but, with some effort, she was able to hoist him up through the air and safely onto the platform next to her. Once she released him, she took a deep gasp, the toll from her efforts hitting her all at once. "It would seem," she huffed, "that we need a new path to our objective, apprentice."

She stared back up at the hole out of which they had fallen. Their assailants were still there, staring down at them ominously. "They will be after us," Vex continued. "Keep your guard up. If we continue to fail as we have, the next time we meet them, both of us might be feeding the fish of Kamino." She flicked a wrist towards the door nearest them, opening it with a thought. "Now, come."

It was even darker inside, the power long since out. They would not be able to rely on lifts to get them back up; but maybe there were still stairs intact somewhere. Perhaps her apprentice would have a better eye than her at finding them. Never one to waist an opportunity, though, Vex used the reprieve to address the young Sith. "What troubles you?" she asked, more softly this time. "You've been quiet this whole trip, and your magic seems... unfocused. Speak plainly. Perhaps I can help." @LouJoVi

If Caerllion thought that being hit and thrown away was the worst that could have happened to him, he was totally wrong. When he fell next to Vex, the Acolyte was already prepared to hear how she was disappointed with his actions so far. However, what he heard was the sound of the tile where he landed moving. Soon, the Annfyn and his Master were falling down toward the ocean full of waves.

While they fell, the Annfyn thought about how he wanted to have learned the incantation of teleportation. Thankfully, his Master was able to save him by using the Korriban magick to move the Acolyte to a safe place. “Thanks.” it was the only thing that he could say, while recovering his breath.

Yeah, I don’t want to go back here.” he answered Vex, while looking at the hole in the building. The terror soldiers were staring at them, perhaps contemplating if they should follow them. “Maybe next we will be able to throw them in the ocean, rather than being the ones falling.” the Acolyte said, while raising to follow his Master.

He followed Vex toward a closed door, which she opened with only a flick of her wrist. Caerllion was already going to enter when he heard his Master talking with him. The Annfyn turned to look at her. He was confused with why she was asking him about it. The Sith weren't the type of people that cared about the mood of others. The Acolyte wondered how she would react if he told what was bothering him.

After thinking if he should tell her, Caerllion finally decided to do it. “Tomorrow is the anniversary of my mother’s death. In Annwfyn, these days are remembered with a special ceremony. Before coming with you on this mission, I argued with the bitch of my stepmother about it. She was trying to convince my father of not doing it.” he explained, a bit uncertain of how she was going to react. “Without me here, she’ll probably convince him to not do it.

Vex thought hard about what her next move was going to be. She had lost her own mother. The boy's pain was not unknown to her. Only, she had lost her entire family. There was no one to bicker over their funerals. Those decisions had gone way over her head, and she had been so young. Compassion was the reaction she was likely societally obligated to respond with. But they were both Sith, and there was a lesson here that he needed to learn.

"This ceremony," she said. "Why would your stepmother not want to honor the traditions of your people?" In truth, Vex already suspected the answer. The stepmother — also known as 'the new wife' — probably wanted all memories of 'the old wife' wiped away, and that meant any celebration of her life. It was a tale as old as time. "More importantly," she continued. "Do you think you being on Annwfyn right now, instead of here on Kamino with me, would increase the likelihood of her begrudgingly going ahead with the ceremony?"

As she awaited a response, she took out her lightsaber and lit one of its blade, so that the contours of the facility were illuminated to her. At once she spotted the stairwell she had been looking for on the far side of the leaking corridor. She motioned for Caer to follow, then proceeded towards it slowly, sweeping her blade around her so that she could spot any assailants before they could get the jump on her. When none arrived, she guided them up the wet stairs to the next level. One of the rooms on this new level should have a readout of the facility and they could get their bearings, start going in the right direction again. @LouJoVi

Caerllion was surprised, he didn’t expect that Vex would even give an answer to what he said. After all, this type of sentimentalism wasn’t something that the Sith supported. “She thinks that it wasn’t necessary anymore, since my father had married her. She is one of the few Annfyns that believe that the dead should be allowed to rest.” he knew very well that it was only an excuse because she hated how his father would feel nostalgic on these days.

The Acolyte thought about what Vex was saying. Would his presence in Annwfyn really change something? “Well, I could convince my father to continue with it.” he doubted that it would happen. His father was so tired of hearing the arguments between him and his step-mother that he probably would remain neutral in all of that.

Maybe I could even do it alone.” this would be strange. Usually the ceremony was made by two or more people. Suddenly, he had an idea. “Would you like to do it with me after we finish here? It’s fast, you will soon be back to Castle Gaol after it.” Caerllion didn’t expect that Vex would accept it, but he would ask for the sake of the memory of his mother.

While he talked to her, the Acolyte had followed Vex inside the building. The place was dark, without the sparks coming from the wires. Like his Master, Caerllion also activated his lightsaber to give some light to their path. He hoped that this time the terror soldiers would not be expecting for them.

Vex listened to him as they pushed further inside. So much of the equipment in this upper chamber was drenched and unworkable. But the Kaminoans had to have a plan for this. Somewhere in here was a way to restore the power and then switch over command of the facility to her. She just had to keep looking.

"I am going to be truthful with you, apprentice," she said through the heavy modulation of her helmet. "You can choose to view this situation one of two ways. You can let it get under your skin and distract you from your goals, or you can use it." She was speaking from experience there. The loss of her parents had also inspired spite within her. But her training had taught her that spite was a powerful motivator. "Your stepmother has given you a great gift: anger, resentment. The stronger those emotions burn inside you, the most powerful a sorcerer you will become. The greater the control over your magic you will have."

She stopped moving. They were getting nowhere in this room. There were no clues as to where the main control center for the city might be, and the only clear path they had was guarded by terror soldiers. Soldiers who were likely combing the facility for them right now. She turned to Caer. "If you choose to go, it will be on your own," Vex said plainly. "Some matters must be faced alone. But if I can give you one more piece of advice? From one person who has lost her mother to another, use what your stepmother has done to increase your power. Use your resentment of your father's weakness and lack of action to increase your power."

She nodded to a nearby set of doors, leading deeper into the city. "Go on," she continued. "See for yourself. Use the spells you've learned to look for a new path to the control center. And mind what you've just heard. Show the Force your frustration and it may just reward you." @LouJoVi

Caerllion blinked when Vex finished answering him. From all that she could have said, the Acolyte didn’t expect that his Master would say that he should embrace his hatred for his stepmother, rather than accepting the inevitable and doing the ceremony for his mother alone.

However, such a suggestion was really fitting for a Sith. By embracing his anger and frustration he would become more powerful. “I’ll continue helping you with the mission, Master.” he said, after having reflected over her words. Caerllion could still do a private ceremony later and when he becomes the head of his House, he would have his revenge against his stepmother.

This conversation between the two also revealed some more about the life of his Master. Now Caerllion knows that she also had lost her mother. He wondered if Vex would reveal more about her life for him, or even who she really was.

The Acolyte turned to look at the door that Vex showed to him. “Yes, Master.” he said, before stretching his arm toward it. Closing his eyes, Caerllion focused on the Force, casting the same incantation that he did when they arrived on Kamino. However, this time it was more powerful and covered a great distance, due to his feelings that he used to fuel it.

There is some type of elevator some meters down here and the path toward it is clear. There are also other rooms there, some seem to be full of some type of devices.” Caerllion said to his Master. Of course, he didn’t know if there was any energy for the elevator to work, but it was a passage for the other levels. They could also continue exploring this floor if Vex wanted.

Vex nodded sharply. "You have done well, apprentice," she lauded him. But she didn't shift back to her goals immediately. She sensed this was a moment of teaching, and she would not waste it. "I know what I said was not what you wanted to hear. The dark side can be a cruel master in that way. But you are strong in the Force, your connection growing the longer you train. In time, you will have the strength to make your stepmother do whatever you please. Remember — we Sith take what we please, so long as we are strong enough to do so."

Those words imparted, Vex strolled in the direction he had indicated, coming to a series of rooms with devices in them indeed. These were the devices she was looking for. Power cores large enough to reignite the city's main power grid. After this, it would just be a matter of reaching the control room and signing over control to herself.

She whirled to face Caer. "Are you ready for another lesson, apprentice?" she asked, gesturing to the power cores. There were two, side-by-side. "We need to jolt these back awake. And it is past time you learned how to control Force lightning." She stood before her power core and gestured for him to do the same. "We have to time this right. Force lightning is about projecting your willpower on the Force. Twisting into an electrical form. It requires immense hatred to conjure. Look to your power core and think about all that you hate. Think about this situation with your stepmother, and channel all of your negative feelings into the Force. Then," She turned, raising her hands to her own power cell, "Give this thing hell."

Lightning tore through the darkness, pouring from Vex's fingertips and lighting up her power core. But it wasn't enough to reignite power in the city. Only Caer's success performing his own Force lightning could accomplish that. @LouJoVi

Thank you, Master.” Caerllion said, after he heard Vex praise his efforts. The Acolyte only nodded in agreement to what she said next. One of the reasons for him to train so much with the Force was to become stronger. Only this way he would be able to take control of his homeworld and put his stepmother in her place. Preferable six feet under.

With the discovery that the path in front of them was clear, Caerllion watched Vex walk toward the direction of the elevator. He followed his Master, entering with her in each one of the rooms that were located in the corridor. While he wasn’t a specialist of technology, the Acolyte recognized the machines here as part of a system that used to give energy to the city. It was a surprise that this place was mostly intact after so many decades.

Caerllion turned to look at his Master when she said what they were going to do next. Force lightning, this probably was the ability that characterized the Sith. He never tried to use it before, even if its existence wasn’t unknown to him. The Acolyte only didn’t had the opportunity to learn how to use it properly.

I’m prepared, Master.” he said, before she moved to stop in front of one of the machines. Caerllion paid close attention to her explanation about the use of Force lightning. The Annfyn also walked until he stopped in front of one of the machines. The Acolyte took a deep breath and stretched his arms toward it.

Like how his Master had said, the Acolyte focused on his frustration and anger with his stepmother. He channeled all these emotions into the Force, thinking about how he wanted to electrocute the woman with whom his father had married. Due to these dark feelings, Caerllion released a blast of lightning toward the machine. While it wasn’t strong like that of Vex, it was enough to give energy to the machine.

"Your lightning needs work," Vex observed even as the power surged to life in the city all around them. "But you have done well, all the same. Force lightning is difficult, even for the most powerful Sith. Continue to practice with it. It can refine your spellcasting simultaneously."

At that moment, Vex heard a familiar mechanical clanking on a faroff stairwell. The terror troopers were coming. The sudden power surge had given away the Siths' location. But Vex would not be caught off guard this time. No. This time, she and Caer would be ready for them. She motioned her apprentice out into the hall, scanning the corridor for places to set a trap.

"Our mission nears its end," she told him in the meantime. "The enemy approaches. We must find a place to ambush them from. A good Sith always chooses where to make their stand. They do not allow their enemies to make it for them." She gestured to the dozens of rooms and caveats around them. "Choose, quickly. We have moments before they catch up to us, and this fight cannot go like the last."

More to the point, they couldn't fight so close to the power cells. If the cells were damaged in the brawl, it would be the end of power to Tipoca City, and the end of her attempt to take the planet for the Empire. And she refused to be a failure, almost as much as she refused to train one. @LouJoVi

Thank you, Master.” Caerllion said, after Vex complimented him. Even if she had said that he did a good job, the Acolyte gave more attention to her criticism about him needing to train more with Force lightning. While it helped in giving energy to the city, it wouldn’t be enough in a fight.

After the two powered energy in the machine, the lights around Tipoca city once again came to life. With the room not being dark anymore, Caerllion was able to have a better vision of his surroundings. The place wasn’t so different from any power station. Of course, it would be more similar if it wasn’t for the centuries of not being used.

Then, the Acolyte heard the sound of steel hitting against steel. Even if his Master didn’t warn him, Caerllion would have deduced what was making this sound. The terror troopers were coming toward them, probably attracted by the energy returning. The Annfyn wondered if the droids mission here was to stop anyone from recolonizing the city.

Yes, Master.” Caerllion followed Vex inside the hall, while looking around in search for a place where he could wait for the ambush. The Annfyn saw a platform over the only entrance, he could wait for the troopers to enter the room and jump from here to attack them. Using the Force, the Acolyte jumped and landed on the platform. He would crouch and wait for the arrival of the enemy.
