DESCRIPTION
The Type 334 patrol cruiser is a class of light, long-range patrol vessel which was originally designed and manufactured for the First Galactic Empire by Sienar Fleet Systems. Intended to replace the stalwart but increasingly obsolete Guardian-class patrol cruiser, the Type 334 was - like its predecessor - designed to show the flag in the most remote corners of Imperial space. It incorporated a number of improvements over the Guardian, however it never entirely replaced the older design, as the Empire fell to the New Republic before the program could gather steam.

The Type 334 is exactly the same length as the Guardian-class patrol cruiser, 42 meters, but is otherwise an almost entirely new design. Using a more efficient space frame than its predecessor, not to mention a greater degree of miniaturization and consolidation in its shipboard systems, the Type 334 is considered to be much more spacious and comfortable for crew and passengers than its predecessor, a rarity among Imperial starship classes. Its crew requirement is reduced due to increased automation - 8 personnel, down from the Guardian's 16 - with room for 16 passengers. Cargo capacity is slightly reduced - 150 tons, down from 200 - but consumables stores remain the same at 3 months worth. The Type 334 has some changes in armament; in response to combat experience with the Guardian, the 2 fixed heavy laser cannons of the older design have been dispensed with, in exchange for 4 fully turreted dual medium laser cannons, judged more flexible for dealing with the kinds of threats a long-range patrol ship such as the Type 334 is likely to encounter. Like the Guardian, the Type 334 is capable of carrying 6 starfighters on external docking pylons, however this is seldom done in practice.

The Type 334 was first rolled out in the months leading up to the Battle of Endor. Adoption by the Imperial Navy proceeded at a steady but sedate pace, replacing ships lost in combat in the Outer Rim and other remote regions. The type was well received, and the pace of adoption was slated to be stepped up, until the defeat at Endor caused the Navy to drastically reconsider its procurement priorities. In the end, the Empire was defeated, with production contracts being passed to the New Republic. The New Republic government did end up buying relatively large numbers, however only as replacements for Guardian-class ships as they were lost or aged out, a much slower process in peacetime with a stable government.

In the end, the Type 334 has not been as successful as Sienar had hoped, although they continue to build the type, offering it primarily to system and sector navies, although the type has been acquired by various private interests as well. Notably, it is highly prized both by law enforcement agencies and by criminals; many pirate gangs have found the Type 334 to be a superb commerce raider.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Guardian-class patrol cruisers are generally military equipment, however their lack of heavy weapons has made them easier for private owners to acquire. Even so, they do incorporate other military-spec equipment, and so civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from Legends canon into our site's fanon.
