Nara listened to the other padawans get into an actual, real debate about the nature of responsibility, the role of history and the way the Jedi were and should have been. Things seemed to get... just a little bit heated. In a respectful way, which was both a blessing and a curse. At least nobody was fighting, but fighting would have honestly made things the tiniest bit more interesting.

"Well, I'll give you all one thing, you're slightly more interesting than the old Jedi Masters when you're talking about this. Slightly." She waved towards the book she'd been looking at as she sat up on one of the tables. Taking a look to make sure no Knight or Jedi Librarian/archivist/'Master of the Sacred Books' would tell her off for such a sin.

"Yeah okay, you're right that they keep the teachings for a reason but isn't the point supposed to be that we learn from them and do better? The Order lasted a thousand years... then it didn't. We take their teachings, learn from them, try to make sure we don't make the same mistakes. And yes, before someone jumps down my throat, they did a lot of good too. And so do we, right? When we're not trying to choke down six hundred pages on the musings of a Jedi Master."

She waved her hand towards the holobook she'd been skimming and complaining about earlier, and it slid over the table towards her. With a little satisfaction, she picked it up and held it against herself.

"And as for forging our own paths... I'm not entirely sure, but I think I'm gonna forge a path towards the dining hall before too long. Something about arguing over the past makes my stomach groan."

Beads of cold sweat had formed on Hir'anikorssa's brow, as drips spilt from the tips of her lekku. She was not nervous. Rather, she had been freerunning through the jungle since well before dawn, and only just come inside to let herself recover. Her whole body was shaking—whether with exhaustion or hunger, she did not know—and she would have much liked to return to bed... But, of course, her Master insisted she keep up on her studies.

The Twi'lek padawan found herself in the Jedi Library, sitting cross-legged, in some far corner of it's old halls. Open in her hands lay one of the younger texts available in the library: a copy of The Collected Writings of Rey Skywalker. Again and again, Hirani's studies had led her to the tale of Ben Solo, of the lingering dark in the infamous Fallen Jedi. Of his time as Kylo Ren. Of his fall, and of his redemption. Even after victory had been proclaimed by the end of the Battle of Jakku—after the galaxy was at peace, and the Galactic Empire declared dead—darkness returned, through the son of Leia Solo.

"The Jedi of old ever cried for balance," Hirani muttered to herself: the question prodding at her mind finally given voice. "So why were they surprised when the Dark rose to meet them?"

Her thoughts turned to shadow. In the past month, her dreams were not nightmares—but they were certainly not of light, either. She had sensed something truly dark in the Dathomir system, far darker than she had realized in her time there. Darker than the dead, than the Hollows that haunted her through the thin corridors of that cursed ship. And yet, she could not for the life of her pinpoint what that dark exactly was, even with so much time to reflect. She wondered for a moment, if this was the call Ben Solo felt before he fell. Was that why she kept reading about him?

She'd expressed her concerns to her Master, of course, in her mission report for the Ord Radama Skirmish. But her memories of what had happened on that yacht remained shaky at best. Her near-death experience in that brief battle had all but cleansed her mind of specifics.

The Dark rang out in her mind nonetheless.

Hirani shook it off, pulling her eyes from the text in her hands, and embracing the light of the Force. Inhale. Her soul wandered through the aisles, reaching out, running her fingertips on the edges of the shelves and filling herself with the light of the Jedi that dwelled within. Exhale. The library was one of a small few places she could truly feel at home. On the other side of the building, a small party of padawans had gathered to study together, and in the spirit of the moment, she had not realized she was already walking halfway there. Admittedly, she was a bit of a recluse, perhaps too obsessed with her training... but she still knew at least three of their names.

The first she had noticed was Izel Thral, the Vratix she had come to consider a friend after the ordeal on Mygeeto. One of the other two was the Mirialan, Giran Latt—with whom she had trained, and who she was preparing to go on a mission with on the following day. The other, Nara Allam, would be joining them. It would be their first mission without knight supervision, and ideally, prepare her for her upcoming Jedi Trials. Once in earshot, she heard Nara make a humorous remark about getting something to eat. Her stomach grumbled in reply.

"Did someone mention food? I'm starving." Sensing that a dad joke had formed in one of the other padawans heads, she added with a smirk: "Well, I'm Hirani, actually—but starving is what I'm doing right about now. Cool to meet y'all... Now if anyone wants to join me, I'm headed to the cafeteria. Haven't eaten for a couple days, and I'm starting to think the Force is pissed at me for all this sustenance I'm needing."

Hir'anikorssa smiled at her own little quip, and forgot all about the Dark.

Izel listened closely to Giran's points about the Jedi's moral authority and considered it carefully. She heard a lot of sense in what he said. The Jedi often seemed to claim moral certainty throughout the galaxy, something that she could now see as an ignorant stance.

"Perhaps we should involve non Force sensitives in the Order's deliberations then..." She offered thoughtfully as she took her book back once the Mirialan was finished his argument. "Give them a representative or two on the council? Although I can't imagine that would be easy given the vast number and variety of species ad cultures throughout the galaxy. I can see how it might help us expand our perspective." She looked towards Nara next as the younger Padawan explained her own position, and eventually came to the conclusion their views on the past seemed generally similar. If Nara seemed a bit more radical in her desire to change the Order.

The young Vratix perked up though as she felt a familiar presence approaching, and turned with twitching antennae towards Hirani as the Twi'lek Padawan arrived at the table. She tilted her head with a mixture of confusion and concern as her friend spoke up.

"Days?" She asked. "What kind of training calls for that? Certainly nothing my Master intends to make me do I hope." She closed her book and stood. "I don't think I'd be able to survive." She looked at the others around the table. "As a matter of fact I could do with something to eat as well. Is anyone else coming along?" While waiting for a reply she moved around the table to speak directly to Hirani.

"It's nice to see you again." She said as she reached out to briefly touch the Padawan's shoulder, something Vratix seemed to do all the time, as though they didn't trust a person was really there unless they could feel them. "I've been thinking over designs for my lightsaber. Have you got something in mind for yourself?"

When Fiach was ‘in the zone’ she was really focused. Like now. She was fulfilling two tasks at once. The first was her continued study of ancient languages. The second was a task set for her and related to the sacred Jedi texts.

The Aionomica were a collection of sacred Jedi texts written in an ancient, lost language and was preserved in two volumes, the Aionomicum I and Aionomicum II. The two-volume combination of codex, correspondence, and scrapbook collected many of the earliest accounts of explorations and codifications in the Force. The physical books (which Fiach had not even seen, let alone touched) contain passages written in the hands of the original sages.

Her task? There was rumoured to be a third volume of the Aionomica, which had been the subject of a forgery scandal 300 years prior to the Jedi Purge. But there was a belief the third tome did exist and Fiach’s task was to scour documents for any reference that might lead to discovering its existence – or even its location.

It had been a fruitless task to date but understood that was the way it was when you researched.

She sighed audibly and stretched her arms above her head before rubbing her eyes. She’d been researching for a good few hours non-stop and could do with a short break. Scanning the room, she noticed a group of Padawans were gathered and stood up and walked over to them. She still found social interaction awkward but knew that to avoid group conversations entirely would not be a good thing.

Nara had honestly heard enough philosophising and moralising over the Jedi of the past for one study session, so she was glad when other people mentioned they wanted something to eat. Better still, a couple of new people seemed to be orbiting in their direction. It was obvious why (aside from their incredible collective magnetism) when they were the most animated group in the library. Though that was tough competition with the lore-keepers. Nara reckoned that they'd be pretty interesting and animated themselves... maybe sixty or seventy years ago.

"Hi!" Nara said to Hirani as she introduced herself, "I'm Nara, and you should totally join us for some food, especially after two days." She winced at the thought of two days without food, especially now she was in the Jedi Temple and they just let her have it when she wanted. "If you starve yourself, someone else can float your corpse outta here, not me." She waved towards the others, nodding at the doorway out to the rest of the temple. "C'mon guys, food time, we can argue about wise dead people more later."

As she gathered everyone who wanted to head there, Nara noticed someone approaching, looking a little... awkward? A slender girl, a little older than her. Nara gave her a quick smile and stepped over.

"Hey, I'm Nara. You a padawan too?" she asked, nodding towards the others. "We're about to grab some food, wanna come with? We won't bite, I promise." She gave Fiach a wink and turned, heading back to the group. "Let the force guide us all towards some actual good food for once."

Non force sensitives on the council. That was a brilliant idea. What a lovely way for the Jedi to both ground themselves and become more reachable to an everyday person. He beamed at Izel.
"See that's why you're going to be on the council Izel."
Just as Giran was about to continue the debate a familiar face arrived at the table.

"Well, I'm Hirani, actually—but starving is what I'm doing right about now. Cool to meet y'all... Now if anyone wants to join me, I'm headed to the cafeteria. Haven't eaten for a couple days, and I'm starting to think the Force is pissed at me for all this sustenance I'm needing."

"You haven't eaten for two days! What is your master doing to you! You poor thing!" Giran exclaimed.
"Let's get some food right away! As the old code goes 'hunger leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering"
he nodded sagely making a point to grin at Nara when he said anger. As Giran began to pack his things away he realised something. He was enjoying himself. He'd never really had a group of friends before the kids at the academy had always treated him like dirt. These people on the other hand were intelligent, kind and funny. He smiled at each of them in turn. As he did he heard Nara talking to yet another padawan. So outgoing.

"We're about to grab some food, wanna come with? We won't bite, I promise."

"Come and have a little break with us, I feel like I always see you in here... Oh I'm Giran by the way." He added getting up and putting his bag on.

Starfighter grease stained his hands, clothes, and face, as the rather exhausted Brahe doggedly walked towards the cafeteria. The look was rather typical for Brahe, who was more intent on flying, racing, or working on his starfighter than reading some old texts written by long dead Jedi masters. It was clear that, despite the fatigue, a look of utmost triumph had been written across his face. He had finally succeeded! Another project complete! And what better way than to celebrate with a good, well deserved meal?

It didn’t take long before he passed the entrance of the library, turning his head to look in. To his surprise, there was quite the large gathering of padawans, some of which he recognized. His eyes lit up at the sight of Giran and Fiach, and soon enough he was rushing over to them, excited to share with them his latest achievement.

“Fiach! Giran!” He excitedly grabbed both of them simultaneously and gave them a large hug, barely able to contain his excitement. “I did it! I really did it!”

Pulling away but with his hands still on their shoulders, he smiled, looking at their likely confused faces, a look of utter confidence playing across his own.

“I managed to get the TIE interceptor…….to FLY!” He said, grinning like a mad scientist who had created a brand new toy.

“It’s parked out back! Fiach! Wanna try it later?” He said, still extremely excited.

...but then he remembered his manners, and he pulled away from the both of them, scratching the back of his head.

"Ah....sorry....library....riiiight....I have to be quiet....sorry about that..." He said, blushing a bit in embarrassment as he looked at the rest of the group.

"I'll come for some food" Somm looked at the assembled Padawans. The little group that he had come to reprimand had grown and seemed to be growing still. They were now starting to attract some attention; a few knights were peering from their own booths towards them and members of the library staff were actively scowling. "though if we're gonna go I'd do it soon. We might be about to get thrown out and the head librarian can have a nasty temper."

He inclined his head slightly towards Hirani as Giran introduced himself and as he finished Somm introduced himself too. "I'll just grab my things and meet you guys outside" He said as he turned to walk back to the table he had previously been working at.

Fiach nodded as Nara approached her. She thought it was obvious she was a Padawan – but you never could tell, she surmised. And she nodded again as Nara invited her to join them. Her ubiquitous smile returned to her lips. “Thanks. I’m not really hungry, but could do with a break from studying and would appreciate stretching my legs and having a drink of something.”

To Fiach, food was fuel and no more. She ate for sustenance and would choose food that was required for the task – with slow-release carbs her favoured choice for breakfast, along with protein. For this reason, she never ate sweet treats or deserts (unless you counted fruit).

Her nose wrinkled when the Code was misquoted. She was about to point out the obvious error when she realised…it was an obvious error...and was probably what counted as banter amongst Padawans. She didn’t have the confidence to try it herself and was glad she caught herself before she spoke.

And she was pleased to see a familiar face. Brahe looked as he often did – as if he’d just dismantled a ship. Which, knowing him, he probably just had. She smiled at him and endured the hug. Fiach didn’t do physical contact. But her parents had warned her that, as well as shaking hands, people often like to cuddle you. Even complete strangers. And it was something she would simply have to get used to. At least she did not allow the face her body wanted to pull manifest itself and instead she cocked her head to one side, keen to hear what Brahe had done.

Her smile turned to a beam at the thought he’d managed to get the interceptor to fly. She was a fixer, but her skills were more focused on smaller items. Entire ships were a different proposition. “I’d be delighted to take it up,” she said in hushed tones and meant it.

"There is diffe-rence between moving the snare and deciding to set land-miine instead, Sweet Itzel."

The Blood Carver croaked out earlier in retort to the Vratix's argument, repeating the nickname that Giran used to address her before.

"I will not hide that the Order was not per-fect in the paast, and I am glaad for many chaan-ges. To not take yooun-glings away from families is one, allowing those of us who have them to keep contaact, like me, is anotheer. But there are still old ways I would not swaay away from perso-naaly; to not seek veen-geaance, not hold gruu-dges, and not siree broods or take on lifee-partner-mates. Be wary or the radicaal path will take you too far astraay if not teeempereed by reason."

He delivered a counter in his slow, methodical speech, forcing each word out carefully in elongated groans from his alien gullet. Although his last words may have sounded like a scolding, those who would know the Blood Carver, or the culture he came from before he joined the Jedi at least, would recognize the critique as a good sign. In his perspective, it was not delivered to bring Itzel down, but to help her grow, just as he would after pondering on the arguments she delivered.

His attention was taken aside then as Hiranikorssa joined them and offered her take on the old order. The Blood Carver nodded to her words before giving out another croak in between flipping the page of his tome on the Galactic law.

"In my understaan-ding, the balaance Old Order spoke of is not tieed to the Sith and Jedi, otherwiise what was the pooint of rebuilding this ordeer? Insteed, is how the Force is useed that matters, since Jedi mean to serve its will and listeen to not go against, maintaaining its balance. But Sith, they don't list-en and usee, disruptiing bal-ance."

As his groans subsided, the Blood Carver gave a shrug before arching his body over his book once more, his pale-blue eyes wondering over it with renewed focus to resume his study more earnestly.

"Is what the books say at least."

He gave his take on the subject, falling silent to study as the conversations resumed and moved on around him, and more people joined.

Ke Eoto did look up though when Brahe and Fiach joined them, greeting each of them with a nod and a chittering mutter before going back to his reading, although when food was mentioned the xenos did spoke again,

"I stay heree while you eat. I just got heree and still haave a lot of notes to make. Besides, my kind prefeer to eat live prey."

He chittered out in what was meant to be a jest, although in the strange intonations of his voice, face composed of chitinous plates, and the alien maw that was his beaked face, it might have been hard to discern whether he was serious or not. Still, the Blood Carver looked up from his book before the others would depart,

"We should talk more though soome-time, Giran and Itzel, about our paaths and views on the Order. May be different, but discoorse is groowth."

Nara looked over the group that'd assembled, sharing and talking and meeting each other properly. Yeah, it was loud and probably obnoxious to the other people using the library, but hey, they were heading off for a little bit. Besides, there was sometimes more to life than stuffy archives and the wisdom of dead people. A lesson that some in the Order probably could learn. She gave the library staff her best, beaming, half-sarcastic smile as she lifted her bag onto her shoulder.

"Ke Eoto, it was cool to talk," she said to the Blood Carver, "thanks for coming to study. Hope I didn't put you off your work too much." She gave the alien Jedi a smile before turning to the rest of the group. Trying to run through all the different people who'd turned up, matching names to faces as three different conversations seemed to start up at once.

Nara lead the way to the cafeteria. Still amazed that they actually serve you food, real and fresh and piping hot, whenever you want it! She went and grabbed a bowl full of steaming, hot noodles and vegetables, sitting down at an empty table. She presumed it'd be best if they had their own place, where they could actually talk without getting glared at.

Giran decided he liked Ke Eoto. He relished in debate but was never forceful or angry. He was very similar to Izel in many ways. They were like sponges of new information. They wanted as many ideas and viewpoints as they could find and did not judge any when they found them. He really would enjoy talking to them some more.
"Well, my master has a ship, the Jabberwocky. If you ever want to talk more someone there will know where I am" Giran told Ke Eoto "It really has been a pleasure talking to you!" He gave a little half bow as was customary on Mirial and followed Nara to the cantine.

Brahe and Fiach were busy drooling over that old Starfighter, Giran could fly he'd just never been great at it. The academy had never given him much of a chance though, he'd been written off before he ever got behind the controls.
"Are you a good pilot then Fiach?" Giran asked politely "I've been looking for someone to help me improve. It's just all of Mi'la's other padawans have some sort of affinity with ships and I'm just ... Well... Woefully ignorant..." Giran scratched his nose in embarrassment.
"Would you mind much? You too Brahe?"
He asked as he made his way to the cantine.

When Fiach said she'd be delighted to take the interceptor up, Brahe couldn't help but feel ecstatic. But that wasn't all- Brahe had planned more to show to Fiach.

After Giran spoke, Brahe gave Giran a look of 'Are you serious right now?' Giran was technically right about himself- he was quite woefully ignorant, but it wasn't just about starfighters. But the look Brahe gave him was in a friendlier tone, clearly no more than the way a friend would roast a friend. Giran was still part of the 'padafam', and that meant that roasting each other was not off limits. In fact, it was to expected!

"Sorry to burst your bubble man, but all of Master Mi'la's padawans equates to you, Fiach, and I. That's it...And to answer your question....Fiach IS a great pilot. One of the best I've ever flown with!"

He looked back at Fiach as he said that, smiling in a friendly manner, and giving her a wink.

He stifled back a teasing laugh as he continued to talk to Giran.
"But seriously, all this time, you never asked, when literally all it would've taken was for us to visit my place back on Krownest, and I could show you how to fly? Come on now man, you know this is my jam! I've been flying my whole life!"

He continued to walk alongside the group towards the cafeteria, while turning to Fiach again.

"I've uhm....got a present for you too, by the way..." he said, blushing a bit. "I spoke with Master about how you didn't have your own ship and all....so I uhm....well it's not quite finished yet, but I'm fixing a ship for you to use..it's another interceptor, but modified with it's own hyperdrive and shields...I uhm...I hope you'll like it!"

Brahe bit his lower lip lightly, hoping the reaction would be positive.

"Of course," Izel said in response to Ke Eoto's explanation. "I wouldn't want to suggest we give up the teachings that make us Jedi. Revenge and other hateful thoughts like that have never and never will be something laudable. I'm not talking about embracing the dark side here, I only meant that the Order should be more flexible with how it operates and be more open to new perspectives instead of suppressing any thought out of fear of corruption. Fear is a path to the dark side after all." She bowed her head respectfully as Giran had. "But at any rate, I wish you luck in your studies. And I would like to speak with you again. This is where we usually study if you're ever interested."

After introducing herself to the newly arrived Padawans she fell in with the group moving towards the cafeteria, walking between Hirani and Giran. She had to say she was quickly coming to enjoy the Mirialan's company. He seemed to actually humor her thoughts on how to improve the Order. Most of the fellow Padawans she had spoken to in the past seemed uninterested in the less adventurous aspects of the Order, and her Master and other elders seemed actively concerned with her more radical ideas.

"Is al-right, we will see each other aa-gain."

The alien croaked out in a response to the other padawans, reassuring them that his studies were not overtly disrupted by them and promising that he would find time to speak with them some more when he isn't as pressed to catch up on his readings.

"Do not fly too close to the sun."

He added the literal warning with a groan as he turned the page of his book again, quipping out the words in strange intonations towards the departing padawans as lessons on flying a ship were discussed. However, as the other padawans left towards the cafeteria, second meaning of his words was not lost on him. The Blood Carver recalled earlier arguments on the future of the order and whether the Old Ways he favored should be observed, or change introduced to their Order.

He glanced up from the text of Free Worlds Alliance laws, looking at the backs of his colleagues. For a split second Ke Eoto wondered whether he will truly spend most of his future career rooting out crime among populations of worlds under the protection of the Order, or instead scrutinize his fellow Jedi to find corruption among them before it takes hold and bring to justice those of them who fall. As his thoughts entertained the notion, memory of a section in the Codices of Jedi Investigators dealing with circumstances in which one Jedi could execute another and his extensive notes on it, knowing the page numbers dealing with such by heart, flashed in his mind and a chill took his heart.

He pushed the thoughts down immediately, allowing peace to flow through him once more as they were replaced with trust that the other padawans would know which path is the correct one. As the others disappeared to get to cafeteria, Ke Eoto bent down over his book once more, returning to writing notes about various classifications of blaster rifles and the legality to possess them.

Fiach faced Giran. “No, I’d not say a good one.” Fiach was prone to neither boasting nor false modesty. She always told it like it was. “But I would say I am competent. I’m good on theory and the controls of flying. I lack instinct and I suspect I shall only gain this through more practical experience.”

“And I’d be delighted to work with you to help you improve. Practice is key as far as I am concerned. Natural ability gets you so far, but time spent doing will ultimately count for more.”

“So, don’t listen to Brahe’s claims about my ability. I think he must be being generous because I’m a newbie Padawan.”

She looked back at Brahe. “A ship? My ship? Is that even allowed? I mean, I certainly hope so as that would be amazing. Truly.” Her usual smile was in danger of splitting her cheeks right now. She looked down at the ground and then back at Brahe. “Is it true you have to name a ship? I mean, more than just its transponder code? Do you name yours?”

As the others filtered with her, conversations floating around about this and that, studies and debates, Nara heard something that didn't seem... right. Or possible. It lingered in her brain annoyingly, tingling. It took her a few seconds to really appreciate what they were talking about. Her eyes went wide.

"Seriously? Not only did you manage to get a TIE interceptor working, you managed to refit another one and you're just giving it away?" Nara asked, sounding incredulous. "Jeez, you should be making mega-credits out there, not in a Temple with us." There was only a slight hint of jealousy there about what Fiach had been given, though mainly because it sounded like a really cool, shiny ship. She certainly noticed the way Brahe was acting towards Fiach too.

Ooh. I see.

"Name it something special. Something that means something to you. And, ideally, something that doesn't sound stupid when you're in a rush to get on it. I knew a guy once, owned a transport ship called the Pennywhacker. Said he named it on a bet and wouldn't change it, but it's hardly something you wanna be telling people you just met."
She shivered and sipped a little of her drink. "Pity you weren't around earlier, we coulda plundered some books for cool Jedi names. Beats looking up teachings."

"I didn't ask you about flying Brahe because every time you do me a so called favour something awful happens, remember Coruscant" Giran blushed even just mentioning it.

Coruscant was probably not something to talk about in present company.

"Fiach is much more agreeable at least she won't make me crash for holovid clicks."

He hoped she wouldn't. Fiach was a bit of enigma to Giran but he thought he was starting to get her. Especially after Brahe gifted her a ship. That shadow of a smile was pure and unusual to see, clearly the gift meant alot to her.

"Seriously? Not only did you manage to get a TIE interceptor working, you managed to refit another one and you're just giving it away?"

Nara cut in breaking off Giran's train of thought. The playful jealousy was plain on her voice .

" Don't worry Nara our boy here doesn't need the money." Giran laughed mussing up Brahe's hair " His pa is a big shot at somewhere or another. Which makes our Brahe a philanthropist, when do we all get our ships!" Giran teased "As for a name, name it after something special to you, something that'll make you smile whenever you say it."

Fiach’s eyes turned upwards. “Something special?” This was a little tricky for the Padawan. She could not think of anything special. Her fathers? She cared for them, but they did not seem to fit the term special. She had not been someone who coveted anything before she joined the Order, and so could think of nothing she owned or wished to own as special. So…something other than a purchase then? But what? She decided to reflect on this at a later date.

“Thanks for the advice and I’ll avoid Pennywhacker,” she said.

She turned back to Giran. Was being more agreeable a compliment? Possibly, not the it really mattered to Fiach. “Something that makes me smile…” she echoed, her voice trailing off at the end of the words. Most things made her smile. But what specifically? Punctuality? Learning? Fixing things? Not really ship name material. She would have to give this some serious thought.
