Everyone had their eyes fixed to the skies as the Sith swooped down from orbit. It was all glory and chaos in the upper atmosphere and at the vanguard of the invasion, but that's not where Vizim was.

He was a veteran of the ISB, and frankly hated open combat. The fiasco at Taris still made his lips curl, but forward team for an assault? That was something he was good at. He'd arrived on world in advance of the invasion to perform reconnaissance, evaluate weaknesses, and sabotage as needed.

He glanced back to the chaos of combat around the dropships, but didn't make to assist. While the others made their main assault, Vizim crept around the sides of the temple, heading to disable their security systems. With everyone else busy fighting the main assault, he may well go unnoticed altogether, which would be great to him. If not, he was sure he could deal with whatever he found alone.

He probably should have been out front, with the others, focusing on the enemy as they came flying in.

But there was a pull from the Force - a feeling - that he wasn't supposed to be there. No, he was needed somewhere else and he needed to follow the Force's suggestion or things would not go well. So instead he gave orders for the controlled evacuation to the agreed upon points by the visiting Jedi before trusting in Hlodovic and Asena to fight off the invaders at their door.

While he followed the will of the Force... yeah sounded dumb in his head too.

With his lightsaber held in his right hand but not yet activated, Crix kept his senses open as he moved through the Temple. If he was going to try attacking the Temple - he wouldn't just go with a full frontal assault and, perhaps, neither would they. With this in mind, Crix moved toward the security section of the Temple.

Standing in the corridor outside the security suite, he checked in briefly and found it a mass of controlled chaos as people manned remote guns and the coms. Leaving them, he locked the door behind him with his access code before feeling something run down the length of his spine.

Turning to stare down the corridor, he watched as the external door opened to reveal a dark figure.

The sensation of something sliding down his spine increased before it abruptly fell into the pit of his stomach... he hated being right. He turned fully to face the man. He wasn't sure if the man was one of those Sith who liked to talk but Crix himself wasn't above saying a few words.

"You don't belong here."
he called out to the darkened figure, "So let me show you the door."

Vizim had half expected to find the Grandmaster here somewhere. He'd fought her on Taris, but it seemed she had grown in power since then, not that she was any slouch at the time. But he'd made it out of that, and he'd make it out of this as well.

With his mask pulled up over the lower part of his face, he hit the door controls and the side entrance slid open to reveal a Zabrak standing only a few meters away. He let out a sigh and shook his head as he ignited the lightsaber in his right hand.

Look, just get out of the way. I've got a job to do. We'll fight, and you'll barely even slow me down, he said. His head tilted slightly to the side, studying the man and his stance, the way he moved. He had always been a hunter, and this was what he loved: studying and bringing down a single prey.

He exuded complete calm and confidence in the Force, and after a moment, his eyes flicked back up to the Jedi's eyes. He wasn't holding his breath, but Jedi liked to claim they loved life and peace. Maybe he'd back it up by actually moving aside.

In answer to the red lightsaber of the Sith being ignited, Crix's own lightsaber burst into life and the corridor was covered in the warring colours. If he were in the mood there was a comment about duality to be made in there somewhere but for the life of him he just couldn't find it in himself to bother reaching for it.

"I'm curious - but does that little speech ever actually work?"

He raised an eyebrow ridge at the Sith as he slid into a makashi starting stance, arm bent slightly at the elbow and blade held up as though to invite challenge. With the corridor limiting them the Sith would need to go right through him to reach the security suite and he would have it no other way. He flashed a grin.

"Feel free to extinguish your blade and walk away, though."

Yeah that wasn't going to happen.

Crix's eyes narrowed in concentration as he focused on the Sith in front of him and the Force around him, unwilling to cede ground but not wanting to make the first move. With his more recent history with his temper in the face of the Sith, the last thing he wanted to do was press an all-out attack. He had his temper under control for now and he wanted to keep it that way.

Vizim was absolutely shocked that Crix didn't take him up on the chance to leave. No one ever did, but who knew, maybe if he kept trying he'd get the anomaly someday.

No, but it's obligatory. Someday I'll get the exception, he said. This was immediately followed up by the man telling him to walk away as well.

He scoffed slightly before adding. Does that ever work? he asked. Enough of that, though, he had a job to do, and every second lost was a second wasted.

He darted forward, stepping out to the Jedi's right side with his left foot and swinging his saber from his own left to right at diaphragm height at the Jedi. The hallway wasn't overly wide, but it was wide enough for them to maneuver a bit, and though Vizim was stepping past the Jedi a bit, he was hardly planning on trying to run down the hall with his back to the Jedi.

The clash was afoot.

Crix couldn't help the smirk.

"Obligation."
he parroted back without a second thought. There was a part of him that realised that joking about offering a chance at surrender was probably not very Jedi of him. But both of the men who had trained him in the Force would have told him it was probably the best way to offer it without over-extending himself.

Taking a step forward to meet the rushing Sith, Crix's own saber was in his right hand and he brought it further to his right, catching Vizim's blade against the middle of his own. As the blades moved and, ultimately, connected, Crix would move more to his left, circling the Sith as he allowed him to take the right.

Mid-circling movement, however, Crix pushed quick and hard against Vizim's blade before lashing out with his left hand in a fist, throwing it forward as if to sock the man in the gut beneath their blade - which was to visually disguise the fact that he stopped his fist long before it could get within hitting range. And the Force Push would continue on from his fist to rush toward Vizim's gut, below the ribs.

A literal sucker punch but he wasn't a clean fighter like the stance might have suggested.

Obligation. It was a wonder either bothered, and it didn't escape Vizim that there really wasn't anything separating the two. Two sides of the same coin. Both with a job. Both offering a chance to walk away. Both setting out to kill the other.

As the clash of blades began, Vizim continued pivoting to face the Jedi, stepping back as the Jedi pushed forward and threw a punch. He pulled his midline in to try to avoid the punch, and felt the flux of Force energies a moment later. It was quick, which meant it lacked as much power as it could have had, but it also meant that Vizim didn't actually have the chance to react.

The arcing inward of his belly meant that at least some of the energy transitioned past him on his own left side, but enough of it still struck to shove him back, impacting like a hit to the gut and slamming him back against the wall.

The hunter had taken worse.

His opponent had failed to press the attack, and Vizim capitalized on it. He brought his blade down with a flick of his wrist. Sabers didn't require a great deal of power to do damage, and he didn't put a great deal of power behind this strike. It was aimed to strike from his own top right diagonally down toward his own the bottom left, though he had no intention of pulling the blade that far through. A classic Form X strike, inspired by Makashi itself. If it struck, it would strike through his opponent's left shoulder. And this time, he was far more prepared for a dirty strike from his opponent. As he slashed, he took a step forward to close with his opponent so they were far more up close and personal.

He knew he could have, maybe, capitalized on the strike he had managed to land against the man's gut with the Force but he had always been taught not to over-extend himself when fighting an unfamiliar opponent. The reaction from the hit told him that his opponent was hardy, capable of taking a beating. Probably a good thing he hadn't thrown himself forward after anticipating a more pronounced reaction to the strike.

Even with the limited reaction to the hit it was enough of a reaction to give Crix time enough to react in turn. His primary blade was still held almost horizontal in front of his from their last clash, allowing him to flick the tip of his own lightsaber up to his left to catch and push Vizim's quick slash upward and away.

As he was moving to deflect, he called his shoto saber from where it was hilted at the left side of his waist, bringing it up to his left hand with the Force as he reached down to cut its travel time. It slapped into his hand and he would ignite it as he stepped forward as Vizim did the same, thrusting it forward in a stab aimed at the Sith's lower gut while his main saber stayed high to keep Vizim's blade high above where the shoto was incoming.

Vizim's decision to close with his opponent wasn't an accident, and it put him in position for his left hand to lash out and clamp down around the Jedi's right wrist. With his own saber in contact with Vizim's saber, there was no pulling it away.

Vizim yanked to the side, looking to pull the Jedi off balance and put that second saber out of range of being able to hit Vizim with it. Meanwhile, Vizim's saber flashed out for a split second, sweeping down and then flashing back on again so that it was pointed toward the ground and able to push out to his own right. It would push the Jedi's saber farther to the outside. If all that failed, Vizim would still take a step to his own left as well, ensuring that if the thrust still connected, it would pass by his own right side rather than impaling him.

Vizim would continue to follow the pull through, hoping to have thrown his opponent off balance and slam him - face, horns, and all - into the other wall of the hallway.

Things were getting messy.

Already this fight was something that would make a Jedi Order fencing instructor cringe, but it seemed that neither Jedi nor Sith was afraid to turn this into something more akin to a cantina brawl than a battle between two trained Force Sensitives. Crix wasn't above lowering himself to this kind of combat, however.

Cursing in Huttese when the Sith grabbed his wrist, he took a step to his right, mirroring Vizim's own movement. Extinguishing his main blade, he quickly swung his shoto out to his left, interrupting his own thrust to bring it round to defend against Vizim's own lightsaber.

He was pulled, however, even as he tried righting himself. As his left shoulder slammed jarring into the wall, Crix threw his head slightly to his right, his horns stabbing towards Vizim's forehead. His feet moved as well, turning him to keep him facing Vizim, using the jolt of his left shoulder hitting the wall to push himself into action even as an ache settled in. In his right hand he spun his main lightsaber hilt until the emitter was pointing at the centre of Vizim's chest - at which point he ignited the blade. To avoid it, Vizim would likely have to remove his hand from Crix's wrist but if he didn't that was fine too.

The force began to build up within the Jedi as he prepared for a potentially explosive method of separating the two of them in a moment.

Vizim managed to pull his opponent off balance, slamming him into the wall. He didn't expect the Jedi to try to actually fling his head at the assassin. He leapt back more out of instinct than anything, narrowly avoiding taking the hit to the face.

He heard the Jedi's curse and recognized the Huttese. His "official cover" had always been as a bounty hunter, and that meant dealing with the shady underworlders.

He continued his leap back, landing several feet back and out of the range of the saber's ignition as it turned back on again.

Now, now. You kiss your mother with that mouth? he asked. Second saber? That's not very sporting, he said, with a disapproving shake of his head.

He was ever-ready in the event that his opponent leapt forward to attack.

That was what he called using his head!

... would have been funnier if it had hit he supposed.

Turning to keep the enemy in his sights, Crix flexed and rolled his shoulders ever so slightly, eager to take even a second to test the damage. As expected it was going to bruise but nothing broken - nothing for it but to suck it up. He grinned a little bit as he bounced slightly on his toes.

"Who do you think taught me how to curse?"

His mother hadn't actually taught him to curse but he'd overheard her cursing enough to have picked up a lot of different, inventive, curses. Bit of a nasty shock for her when he decided he was old enough to use them too - she had not agreed and the grounding had been legendary.

"Well you've had one saber, yes, but what about second saber?"
he joked back, before becoming slightly more serious, "So now we've touched tips, got to ask you again. What's the chances you just walk back on outta here?"

His mind shifted over to the reports he heard coming in from the battlefield. Sounds like things are going well out there, he said. He wondered if Crix was receiving his own reports through a comlink.

He snorted slightly at the Jedi's retort. Seemed like he wasn't such a terrible person.

No, I won't be leaving. You seem a decent fellow, I hate to kill you, he said. He reached down with his left hand to pluck the phrik vibroknife from its sheathe and took a deep breath in. He hit the button and its low whirring sound joined the hum of the three sabers in the hallway.

I opened us up last time. Your turn, he said. These bouts were quick, violent, and desperate. Each clash could easily be the last moment alive. As much as Vizim enjoyed the hunt and the thrill, there was always a part of him that still felt the nerves.

Crix also got reports from the battlefield - hence why he grimaced a little bit. It seemed that things were not going well for the Jedi and their allies. His grip on his lightsabers tightened ever so slightly and he forced a smile.

"Thinking about other people in the middle of a fight is rather rude."
he forced himself to smirk, "Might hurt my feelings if you're not careful."

In the end though he already knew that this wasn't going to be a fight with a clean ending. Even if he was able to run the Sith off, the Temple would likely be lost. He could hardly be expected to hold the Temple by himself, even if he was willing to perform a stalling action against the Sith.

Still - no need to let on that his thoughts were already circling the drain.

"You seem a decent fellow; I hate to die. But I'm smiling because I know something you don't know."

He grinned and made to take a step forward as the Force flared through him.

"I am not a lightsaber specialist."

As he threw himself forward with a probing thrust of his main lightsaber at Vizim's throat, Crix roared as he Pulled with his left hand, pulling it physically closer to his chest to protect himself but also as the movement for the Force he had been channelling. Above them the lighting flickered madly as he tore out the main power cable from the ceiling above them, flinging it down at Vizim from above in an attempt to ensnare the Sith in the sparking power cable.

The instant he Pulled, the wire snapped and the lighting would go out, leaving the Sith and the Jedi illuminated by their sabers and the sparks of the wire.

Vizim stood at the ready when the Jedi leapt forward to attack. Finally an opponent who didn't just stand there like a limp noodle waiting for him to do something. Though, he had kind of had to force him into it so maybe he shouldn't be giving too many congratulations.

He felt the tug of the Force and didn't hesitate to start moving. He didn't know precisely what the Jedi was planning behind him, but it wasn't good whatever it was.

The lights went out, but everyone knew that Force-users didn't need to be able to see to fight. Plus glow-sticks of destiny. The cables swung by where Vizim had been a moment ago as the Jedi jabbed at him. His forward step was also to his own left as his saber swept up to keep the Jedi's saber from finding contact with his throat. He pushed it further to his own right as his left hand lashed out. The result was the Jedi's saber passing wide to Vizim's right.

With the Jedi's arm still moving into a full thrust he wouldn't be able to withdraw in time and Vizim's knife would come up, slicing across the arm at the elbow. Without being able to withdraw, and with his other hand on the opposite side of his own arm, and with it being occupied doing that voodoo you do, it was unlikely he would be able to save the majority of his arm from being cleaved through.

Regardless of the outcome of the strike, the forward steps by each of them meant they would practically pass one another in the hall, and that was all the better to Vizim.

The lights were down but to the two Force Users it was different, it was like distractions were removed. To men such as them, the Force was their ally in a way far beyond their eyes alone. Their eyes could lie, could be deceived, but the Force alone would tell them the truth, all they had to do was listen to it, open themselves to it and throw themselves into it.

Thankfully he hadn't committed to a full-body thrust so much as a probing stab, attempting to pierce Vizim's throat at the front but mainly attempting to check his defences. The Sith did not disappoint, sweeping his blade up to push Crix's own blade to the side while beginning a counter attack with his short-blade. Because Crix's own thrust had been a lighter attack, he pulled back the tip of his lightsaber just as it was being reflected, pulling his arm back as if stung.

Of course then it was stung as the tip of Vizim's vibroknife managed to skate across the Jedi's forearm as he was pulling back from the probing strike. Flesh parted as easily as cloth in the path of the vibroblade's tip. Deep enough to bleed freely, long enough to almost reach from elbow to wrist. Thankfully his withdrawal was enough to keep it from cutting into muscle or bone.

As he was rearing back, however, Crix had not let go of the power cable he had ensnared with the Force and they hadn't moved far from it. At the same time Crix was dealing with Vizim's counter attack, folding back in on himself to avoid losing the function of his right arm, the power cable struck out at Vizim's unprotected back.

With the Sith in mid motion of the counterattack, his position was perfect for the continued assault, his body as close to stationary as it was likely to be during a fight of this nature. The point of the break in the wire sparking as the power continued to flow through it, he would chase Vizim with it in his blindest of spots - right behind him. It would be slamming against Vizim's back as his short blade cut at Crix.

Emergency lighting power was not comparable to, say, a shield generator's power supply but it would be incredibly painful still.

The Jedi's continued tug on the electrical lines was precisely why Vizim had continued moving forward, and he didn't stop now, taking several more steps as he rotated fully around the Jedi and ensuring he faced him. He would outpace the wires and the Jedi would be forced to either entangle himself in the wires or abandon the attack. Regardless, he wouldn't manage to ensnare the Sith who had already moved out of range.

In the meantime, Vizim's blade had found purchase. Vibroweapon's ability to cut was outmatched only be a lightsaber, and even the glancing blow was likely to shred through muscles, flesh, and perhaps even bone. The Jedi's blood ran out onto the floor, and Vizim - unlike the Jedi - didn't withdraw his advantage.

Now past the Jedi and on his flank, he sent the short knife out again, this time aimed to slam into his exposed right side in a quick jab. Vizim's own saber was ready to defend him, though with the Jedi's failure to rotate earlier, he would be caught in a position where he had little by way of options to stave off the strike.

Surprise surprise, fighting a Sith in a darkened hallway was a bad time. When, not if, he got out of this, Crix was going to make it his mission in life to ensure that Jedi Temple only had hallways that were at least twenty feet wide, with windows all along one side. Probably needed to get an architecural droid for that...

Strange what went through his head in moments like these, zipping through on their way past the struggle of combat.

Abandoning the wires as the Sith continued to move was the only option, leaving Vizim moving to complete the flanking move as Crix pushed himself backward several steps with a push off the ground with both feet. His right arm stayed higher from the earlier move to avoid losing the arm.

Vizim's thrust would pass the front of his torso, Crix's shoto blade catching it as it thrust forward to push it out and away from his chest at the same time Crix would bring his main lightsaber blade down in his right hand.

With Vizim's arm extended in the thrust, it would be exposed from the elbow up to Crix's main blade coming down, Vizim's own extended left arm between Crix and the Sith's lightsaber acting as a barrier against many types of retaliatory strikes from the lightsaber as Crix wheeled backward.

All the while the com in his ear was spitting out reports of doom and gloom, of defeat. It was almost enough to make Crix want to destroy the com unit in his ear but he refused - he needed to hear it. Needed to know it.

The Jedi may not have been a "lightsaber specialist" but Vizim was. His combat veterancy was showing through in how he moved. He had gained a positional advantage, and he wasn't going to relinquish it so easily.

As Crix leapt back to get away from the strike, Vizim moved with him step for step like a dance. Crix did manage to avoid being stabbed, but Vizim's movement meant that his arm stayed under Crix's the entire time rather than under Crix's lightsaber.

When the Jedi moved his right arm down to try to attack Vizim's it wouldn't be the saber that found Vizim's arm, but arm-to-arm contact. Meanwhile, Vizim's saber came up anyway, striking against the underside of Crix's blade. It was already in a defensive position and kept Crix's saber from sweeping down all the way. No matter how you sliced it (ha, get it?), Vizim's arm was spared from the strike.

Meanwhile, Vizim's left arm pulled back, angling the knife up as he did, it would cut right along the underside of Crix's arm and finish what the strike earlier had started: hopefully, a clean arm-severance.

It was only now that Vizim moved fully back and away, hearing the reports of the death and destruction outside.

They're on their way. Your time's running out, he said, flourishing his saber in front of him. And when they get here, there'll be no more retreating.

As Crix's arm came down, he cursed internally. With the blade blocked by Vizim's own lightsaber he was unable to use the positioning to his advantage but his shoto blade still lashed out. As Vizim pulled his left arm back, Crix's shoto blade still caught the vibroblade, pushing it away from him and his arm as he pulled his entire body back another step, disengaging in a hurried backstep.

Kark.

He was combatting a lightsaber specialist in close quarters and even now he could feel his strength in his right arm ebbing and flowing. The adrenaline was the only reason he wasn't clutching his wound and as Vizim flourished his saber, they both knew that they had both come to the same conclusion; Vizim was in his element here, Crix was not. He was managing to avoid being crippled but it was getting harder each time.

The sound of three lightsaber blades humming, a vibroblade's high pitched ringing and the sound of Crix's blood dripping to the floor.

Beyond that?

Explosions.

Chaos in the Force as Crix could feel people dying.

The noise in his ears, worse and worse news.

"When they get here."

Odd turn of phrase. But the Jedi were evacuating - those who could we leaving and those who could not were already dead. It... it stung to realise that even if he could manage to fight back from the position he was in right now? If he could win? The Jedi had already lost New Alderaan.

"But what about right now?"
he asked, eyebrow ridge raising, "What's your obligation say about this fight ending another day?"

Worth a shot.
