Daylight, Jungle, Lubang Minor

The backs of Ana’s eyelids grew hotter and brighter several hours later. She groaned and tried to roll onto her side, but she had been too used to the piece of root jabbing into the small of her back, so the sudden movement suddenly made her acutely aware of how uncomfortable her jungle bedding was. Her eyes slowly fluttered open, and, for a time, the world was blurry. She blinked several times and wiped her face, pulling free pieces of vegetation and mud from her eyes. Around them, the full life of the jungle was making itself audibly known; birds sang in the trees, critters scurried about, hunters howled in the distance, and the insects swarmed everything in search of a meal. The sun shone through the leaves in such a way that a ray of light beamed directly onto her face, much to her chagrin.

Her head pounded more than yesterday, and her clothes were thoroughly soaked, but she was alive. She laid still for a few minutes further and stared at the vegetative shelter above her, musing on the perilous and unfortunate events of the night prior, then suddenly remembered she wasn’t alone. With a grunt of pain, she rolled off of the root – which had left its mark in her skin after hours of pressure – and propped herself up on an elbow. She looked over at Zarine, her unfortunate partner in this trial, and quietly hoped she was still alive. The blood trickling from both of their heads had dried by now, leaving a grisly dark red streak down the side of their faces.

Ana pushed off her back and crawled on all fours to Zarine. When she got next to her, she pushed against her shoulder gently. ”Zarine,” she whispered, fearful of alerting any nearby predators, ”Zarine, get up. It’s morning.” She continued pushing and shaking the woman gently until she awoke, at which point she would wave her hand in front of her face to ensure she was still conscious. ”The rain’s stopped,” she said, casting a glance skyward, ”And I think we’re safe… for now.”

They were utterly screwed, though. Her ship had carved a mighty scar into the earth here and was in a state of terrible disrepair some ways away in a direction she couldn’t even remember. That, and she was certain those… creatures would still be lurking around it, if they weren’t solely nocturnal hunters. She desperately hoped they were; at least it’d give them some time to move on foot and recover before the hunt began again.

”We need to… figure something out,” she said vaguely, wondering just what they could do. As far as she knew, this planet wasn’t even populated, much less containing a starship repair facility. Things were looking absolutely dismal for the pair.

Zarine groggily came to as Ana shook her awake, her entire body feeling sore as she slowly and carefully uncurled herself and got up to a half sitting position. It took her a moment to remember where she was and why she hurt as much as she did. That's when Ana's word's registered, they were safe.

"Okay." She said in a tired voice as she started crawling forward. "Okay. Let's get out. I need to stretch my legs." Climbing out to the surface, she stretched her arms in a wide yawn as scanned their surroundings.

"So," she asked as Ana climbed out to join her, "now that we aren't running for our lives, any idea where we're supposed to be going?" Realizing that the forest looked more or less the same to her on every direction, she tuned away to face Ana instead. "With your ship dead I'm guessing the only way we can go is continue doing whatever you intended to do here, right?"

Ana breathed a sigh of relief once Zarine groggily opened her eyes and responded to her. That was a good sign; it meant that she wasn’t alone on this horrible planet. Together, the two of them scrambled out of their hiding hole. At the top of the short hill, Ana stretched, and it only now hit her how sore she was from the impact. Every muscle ached, her head pounded, and her stomach growled, but that was preferable to being dead. She ran her lithe fingers through her mud-matted hair and shook free some of the debris, sighing. The last time she was this dirty, she was being hunted like an animal on Tatooine. Now she was marooned on a jungle world. Maybe she ought to spend all her time in the library instead.

Ana looked around as Zarine spoke, not quite sure where to begin wandering. The ship had all of her notes on this world back on her ship; she just needed to figure out where to go. ”Yeah…” she said, trailing off as she began to look around the area, ”But we need to get back to the ship. Get our stuff.” She kneeled down near the base of the downslope they climbed up, looking for footprints in the mud.

After some searching, she found faint footprints heading towards the hill and slowly began to follow them with her eyes, noting their direction. ”C’mon,” she said to Zarine, ”I… think I’ve got a rough heading.” She set off right away, following the faint trail in reverse, keeping an eye on the ground so that she wouldn’t lose the trail. She hoped Zarine would keep a watchful eye out for any predators. The trip back to the ship might take a while, but they’d be able to move faster than the night before now that the rain was gone and the sun was out.

She felt a twinge of worry that those predators – or worse – might be back at the ship, but at least they were better rested than before their last encounter.
