He threw another bundle of firewood into the hungrily snapping flames, sending a plume of smoke and sparks tumbling into the air. His focus flitted between them as they danced ever higher into the sky, melding with the evening light and finally vanishing. Far away on a distant horizon, the Sun was setting in an even more brilliant display, painting the sky with bold strokes of gold, amber and twilit blue.
The jungle sprawled at the base of the cliff before him. He had come here at the request of a Knight; it seemed that several other Padawans had had trouble with overly aggressive animals, and being unable to defend themselves, they had returned to the temple with fairly serious cuts and scrapes. The price of choosing this place as home and in a way, a blessing. Those Padawans had another experience behind them now, another hill that they had climbed over. The greatest lesson they could be taught was that no challenge however daunting or terrifying was unassailable.
Cavo's attention was drawn away from the thought as a clump of leaves rustled behind him. The branch he had chosen as his weapon was quickly in his hands, ready and waiting for whatever it was to come barreling out of the bush. Whatever creature it had been made no such advance but that did nothing to relieve the young Padawan's anxiety. Night thickened, shadows deepened, and the darkness drew itself close around his circle of firelight.
