The Duros Sector is a canon location on Nar Shaddaa. It is one of the Smugglers Moons most economically depleted districts, situated roughly beneath its opulent neighbor, the Corellian District. Its current population is largely comprised of immigrants, transients and criminals.

Description and Layout

The
Duros Sector resides on Nar Shaddaa’s lower levels requiring spacefaring visitors to descend deep into the heart of the urban abyss to find a suitable landing pad. Such an option is risky as the entire sector exists in an advanced state of disrepair and its crumbling edifices give way as often as not. For this reason, most choose to land in the Corellian District and complete the journey via turbolift or one of the many covert passages that connect the two sectors.

The sector itself can be roughly split into two regions: Old Duros and the Expanse. Old Duros is what passes for civilization in the subterranean region. It’s the remains of a wealthier age, long forgotten and long ignored. Potholed-streets weave haphazardly through the crowded, trench-life avenues. Conmen, unlicensed vendors, two-bit fences, and forgers alike hawk their wares from every direction. Overhead, a canopy of wire and cabling crisscrosses the open air and fills the rare, moment of peace with the ever-present thrum of electricity. Power is a prized commodity in the Duros Sector since few of the reputable power brokers on Nar Shaddaa opt to run lines to the region. Old Duros is largely powered illegitimately through enterprising denizens who siphon power via hook-ins to neighboring sectors’ grids. The result of such a hodge-podge of resources is a sector that has very little in the way of ‘public lighting’. Old Duros is bathed in the sickly acrid fluorescence of neon advertisements.

The district’s second region is the seldom-visited Expanse. Few citizens of Duros venture into the Expanse and its labyrinth of unlit corridors and walkways. It is the abandoned sections of the district, unpowered and uninhabited by civilized life. Here, nature has begun her slow reclamation of dominance, albeit in a lightless, eerie void. Vines and creepers erupt through rusted, twisting paneling. Rotting edifices bend and warp in the damp, still atmosphere. And nocturnal predators roam the halls and streets where once a vibrant, city-life existed. The Expanse serves as a constant reminder to the citizens of Old Duros of what their holdings, meager and dirty as they are, might easily become.

History

The Duros Sector has seen many incarnations, at separate times housing war refugees fleeing from the Sith Empire, to being one of the more cosmopolitan sectors on Nar Shaddaa. During its heyday, the sector benefited from large scaled funding from the mercantile Neimoidians. The influx of credit drew upscale establishments to the district. Casinos, resorts, fine-dining establishments and more all lined the sector’s brightly-lit thoroughfares.

With the rise of the Galactic Empire the Neimoidians, their Trade Federation, and more importantly to the inhabitants of the Duros Sector, their funding all scattered to the far reaches of the Galaxy. Their benefactors gone, the Duros Sector gradually fell into disrepair. Eventually, all but the sector’s poorest citizens left. Those who remained found themselves entombed in a crumbling, rotting complex of untended buildings and roadways. As the final power lines were severed, the sector was bathed in perpetual darkness.

For decades, the urban crypt deteriorated in virtual solitude with only criminals or the most desperate of society willing to stake their claim within its boundaries. Then, an enterprising young tech took it upon herself to re-route a section of the Corellian Sector’s powergrid. Long-dead streets were illuminated once more. There was light enough to engage in criminality at least. For many years that was the extent of Old Duros utility. But even criminals required the basics. And so a burgeoning (if ramshackle) economy of sorts began to blossom in Old Duros.

It now exists as a sort of ‘frontier town’ of Nar Shaddaa. Far from the moon’s fetid skies, the last bastion of civility before the wilds of the Undertown, the Duros Sector’s carbon-blasted labyrinth of streets are abuzz with life once more. Many come to Nar Shaddaa seeking to not be found, but they come to the Duros Sector to truly be forgotten.

Intent

Intended as Site Lore, the Duros Sector will also play an important role in It0’s personal storyline as it is to be the site of his first independent business. Other characters are of course invited, and encouraged, to explore and use the sector.
