Bespin – Cloud City - Middle Districts

1200

‘The jewel floating among the clouds’ as her uncle had often referred to it, though he’d never been there himself, was just as breathtaking and impressive as Nora had imagined. Suspended in a thin layer of breathable air in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant, Cloud City had long been a lucrative port of call for miners and haulers of every stripe, not to mention a dream destination for many a wandering tourist. She had always intended to fly by and wander the city, and happenstance more than planning had meant that she was nearby when the need arose to refuel and restock the Wanderlust.

And after taking care of those sundry tasks she set off around the city in a sleeveless vest sure to show of the swirling light reactive tattoos that covered her arms, A180 in its pistol configuration at her hip. She began perusing the shops and wandering the halls, often stopping to stare out at the expansive vista of billowing clouds as they caught the Light of Bespin’s sun. The fact that she could see so far into the seemingly endless distance still came as a shock having grown up under the pollution choked skies of Burnin Konn, though she hadn’t been there in nearly standard 7 years. She stood for a moment, still staring through the tansparasteel of one of the massive windows, thinking back to all the times she would sneak away from the work camps at night to try and gaze at what little starlight was visible through the miasma. And she even gave brief consideration to going back to her planet or origin, if for no other reason than to see uncle Hak one more time. But she squashed that thought with a shake of her head, it would be far too dangerous for both of them if she ever went back.

Besides, she thought as she turned and started wandering again, I still need to find a way to keep the Wanderlust flying and I barely had enough to fill her up this time.

She was still pondering on who she knew in the Anoat sector that was looking for a hauler or needed something pulled out of a secure file when she passed by the entrance of The Aloft, one of the dozens of casinos and gambling dens that dotted the city. Never one to turn down a game of cards there was no hesitation as she veered inside, and chatting over a few drinks and hands of sabacc had led to the beginning of a number of adventures. And besides she might just get lucky and walk out with enough credits to get her from this end of the galaxy to the other and back. She looked around the interior, letting her eyes adjust to the dimmer lighting, until she found a sabacc table with a few remaining empty seats. After paying the droid that was the table’s dealer a considerable chunk of her remaining credits to buy in she sat down, and with a flip of her white hair she picked up her cards with a smile.

"The game is Bespin Standard" It said with a buzz of false cheer.

“Good." she said in her lightly accented basic "I hope you folks don’t mind if join you, just looking for some good company while I’m between jobs.”

Here is a link to some in depth rules on Sabbac, but I will include a short description below.

There are 4 suits (Sabers, Flasks, Coins, Staves) of 15 cards each numbered 1-11, with the Commander(12), Mistress (13), Master (14) and Ace(15). There are also 16 other cards, a pair each of The Star ( -17), The Evil One (-15), Moderation (-14), Demise ( -13), Balance (-11), Endurance (-8), Queen of Air and Darkness ( -2), and The Idiot (value 0)

Each player buys in by paying to both the hand pot and the sabbac pot and is given two cards. On their turn they can draw a card, replace a card, or lock one in by placing it face up in the disruptor field so it's value can not change. This continues until someone calls and everyone meets the ante or folds, then all the cards are shown. The goal is to get as close to 23 or -23 as possible, positives winning ties. Going beyond 23 is a bomb out, but only when called at the end of the hand, and people who bomb out also have to pay into the sabbac pot. Winner takes the credits in the hand pot.

Occasionally there will be a shift and one of the cards in everyon's hands will change value unless it is locked in, but this usually only happens once or twice a hand.

A value of exactly 23 or -23 is sabbac and the winner takes bother the hand and sabbac pot. The only thing that beats a 23 is an idiot's array, an idiot and a 2 and a 3 of the same suit.

I figure we can keep the cards as write in, but if people are interested I can set up a dice thread to dictate card values.

The Cloud City was the antithesis of Hutta City on Nar Shaddaa. Where the former was white, clean, and beautiful, the latter was dark, gritty, and menacing. Kel couldn't but indulge himself for a while and take in the view. Despite that, the scoundrel had no illusions: if he crossed the wrong people, he'd quickly get a one-way ticket towards the gas giant's core. In that regard, it'd probably be a slower death—not crashing into the ground, but being crushed by the atmosphere. With a shake of his head, Kel tried to wave those thoughts away, along with his concerned expression. Things wouldn't have to go this way.

He had already concluded the bulk of his business on Bespin. The cargo had been hauled off the Black Swift; the credit chits rattled in Kel's pocket as a reminder that the other party probably wasn't going to double-cross him. Still, the good old DL-44 oh the scoundrel's hip gave him more sense of security than anything else. With a black flight suit and a dark brown leather jacket, the young man didn't stand out in the crowd of spacers.

Kel needed a distraction—something to keep his mind off business for a while. That's why when he saw the sign of "The Aloft", he didn't think twice before wandering in. A game of chance was what the scoundrel could use right now. He had vast experience with Pazaak and its different rulesets. Such games of chance could result in getting a job, making a memory that'd turn into a good story, or just passing some time.

The scoundrel looked around the interior, searching for an opponent... But unfortunately, the Pazaak tables were all occupied, and it didn't seem like any game would be ending any time soon. However, there was a Sabacc table with some empty seats With a sigh, Kel forced a confident expression and a smirk on his face. Maintaining the air of confidence was important, especially in a game that he had much less experience in.

Kel approached the table with a quiet "Hey" addressed to all the players and took a free seat next to a white-haired lady. With a sleeveless vest and glowing tattoos on her arms, his new neighbor did stand out in the crowd. He did cast a quick glance at her—just like at all the other opponents—but first things first. The young man put a bunch of credit chits on the table as his buy-in. "The game is Bespin Standard," the droid replied, dealing Kel his cards. "Right," the scoundrel made a confident smirk before sweeping the cards towards him and picking them up. "May the luckiest player win, huh?" he addressed all of the opponents, his neighbor in particular.

I was kind of hesitant to join because the rules seemed too complex at first glance. But Kel is supposed to be a gambler, so perhaps it's worth a shot. Just be gentle on the rookie ;-) I'll just see how the game progresses and play along.
