Coruscant

The medical sector, storage district, level 3014

Coruscant was one messed up city. There were too many people and too many levels. Logistics alone were a nightmare; the lower you went, the worse it got. But this callout wasn’t anywhere near the scum soaked streets of the underworld. It was in the medical sector. Not exactly a prime location for criminals. So, Shaye wondered. What made this target so special? It had to be something good, worth the risk of attracting sector rangers.

Yea. Unfortunately, Shaye wasn’t alone for the assignment. The brass upstairs thought she needed a babysitter on this, something about young bloods and veterans balancing each other out. What a load of druk. The guy was just dead weight. Even now, he was trailing behind her, already slowing things down.

Proving a point, she glanced at him, sizing him up for a final time. Apparently, if things got hairy, he was her backup. Not a particularly comforting thought. The guy didn’t exactly cut the greatest impression. He hadn’t spoken since they met, but then again, neither had she. Wasn’t much point really, they weren’t paired for chitchat, there was a job to do. Chief at dispatch said his name was Larkin, or @Lorcan , something stupid like that. The man looked like an overgrown gutter rat, walking on two legs. Smelt like it too.

Shrugging him off, Shaye instead focused once more on the hunt. The location was a couple of streets away and already the activity on the street was thinning out. Best stay sharp. There could be lookouts station up ahead. Wasn't unheard of, especially with organised crime. Then again, if these guys triggered the alarm system, how good were they?

Shaye started to mutter. It helped her focus, helped her plan. “Alarms triggered through the rear entrance…” Culprits wanted cover from view. “Disturbances heard, something about screaming.” Inhabitants could have struggled, could be injured. Hostages? Shouldn't have resisted. Idiots. “No security droids on site.” Useless pieces of junk anyway.

A "who-shit-in-my-handbag" fecking Rookie?

Fantastic.

Smoking a cigara, Lorcan was taking his time coming up the rear. He had watched her rear for a bit just out of curiosity but it seemed to be just as much of a disappointment as the rest of her was. Taking a drag from his cigara, he tapped some ash away as they approached the warehouse in question. Apparently it was a medical warehouse and the back door had been busted open - there were some reports about the alarm going and screaming.

Honestly on the lower levels of Coruscant?

That meant some idiot high on chems had tried to rob the place and likely had to shank the night watchman. Was it a shame? Yeah it was a real bleeding tragedy from start to finish but it was Coruscant. That kind of thing happened so many times a day that it was easier to just assume that being a lone guard was like preparing a noose for yourself. Might not use it that day but no one makes a noose for decoration; and no one signed up for solo guard duty on Coruscant to retire.

"Stop muttering the bloody briefing to yourself, you daft shit."
he scolded her bluntly as he drew his pistol. walking past her, "It's a B&E. Either it's gone wrong and the guard is dead or it's gone REALLY wrong and more than one person is dead. Either way, stop acting like the rookie you are for five minutes, quickly grow a spine, and follow me."

Stepping out into the open, Lorcan was able to see that the docking bay doors were wide open. Either they had the keys but not the alarm codes or they had just been very thorough in breaking through. With his pistol raised in his right hand, he held a torch in his left hand, braced against his right forearm, the light ahead of him and in line with his aim.

"Sector Rangers!"
he called out as he approached the door, "Anyone in here needs to put their weapons down on the ground and push them away. We will use force if threatened. If you're injured please call out your location!"

Left unsaid was that his weapons were all currently set for stun because he wasn't looking to get the rookie crying to the brass about undue force.

Plus he didn't actually want to kill anyone.

“Kiss my ass, Lorcan.” Shaye didn’t need some hotshot schooling her on the game, she knew the drill. “And while you’re at it, try not to get in my way.” He wouldn’t be the first partner shot in the line of duty by friendly fire; luckily, the stun setting was always in effect. Brass still didn’t like it though, apparently, she didn’t leave the best impression. Oh well.

Blaster raised and at the ready, Shaye fell into procedure, following Lorcan’s lead and already disliking his approach. “Stoopa! Ruin the element of surprise, why dontcha?” They could have gotten further in the building before announcing themselves. Typical, old school tactics; this mook was going to get them killed at this rate; who knew how the perks would react, now that they knew the net was closing in on them.

Shaye half expected blaster fire in return, for all hell to break loose. Something. But nothing came, not yet. Still, she knew better than to let her guard down and secured the other side of the door, ready to breach the facility when signaled clear. She had half a mind to leave Lorcan in the dust and go at it herself…

But snipe would likely snitch on her to brass HQ.

Get in her way? Oh brother this little shit was going to get on his last nerve fast if she kept this shit up. Already he was seriously considering just letting her go on ahead on her own and only going in later to either save her ass with an "I told you so" or mop up whatever they left of this jumped up little rookie.

As they stepped into the building properly he actually scowled.

"We are acting in official police capacity."
he growled at her, eyes narrowed, "We're not here to sneak in like assassins on some holofilm. We are here for the public good; including anyone wounded in the attack. So dial back your homicidal bullshit and act like a karking police officer, you undisciplined piece of shit."

There was a moment of silence before he heard it.

"... officers... o-over by the... by the left racks..."

Cursing under his breath, Lorcan followed the directions with his blaster pistol and his torch. His torchlight illuminated a twilek male dressed as the night guardsman but there were problems; namely his legs had been bodily torn off just above the knees and there was a cavity in the lower torso, upper abdomen. Lorcan rushed over to the guardsman, falling to his knees at the side of the guard. He pressed his hand atop the guard's, over the abdominal wound.

"Alright, I've got you."
he assured the man, his usual rough voice softening slightly as he addressed the guard, "We're gonna call this in and get you a medivac asap sir, alright? I just need you to keep the pressure up and..."

He stared for a second before finishing his sentence.

"... and you're gone."
he swallowed thickly and pulled his hand away from the guard's body, now sticky with blood, "... rookie see if you can find any signs of what forced the entry."

Lorcan didn't look at Shaye, instead opting to close the twilek's eyes.

At first, Shaye tuned out Lorcan's spiel. She even made a show of it, rolling her eyes in the most deliberate way (making sure he saw her doing it too). Let the old-timer give his little lecture and, when he was finished, she'd tell him where he to shove it. Not even five minutes on the scene and this clown was already working her nerves. This is why she hated partners and probably why they hated her too.

"Quit your bitchin', would ya? Save the speeches for someone who gives a cra---Gods!"

The sight of the guard cut her off. Or rather, what was left of him. Karabast. Shaye knew a dead man when she saw one. Didn't need a doctor to know that Twi'lek was goner; still, Lorcan tried and Shaye just watched. Rule number one in training, you can't save them all.

Preferring not to end up in the same shape, Shaye focused on their surroundings, her blaster still at the ready, just in case. The million credit question was what did in the guard? An animal? Not likely, Wookie, maybe? Those were a pain to deal with, in at the best of times and these sure as hell wasn't one of the times.

Whoever did this could still be in the building...

Not willing to waste her breath and argue with Lorcan's instruction, Shaye backtracked to the location of the building's breach. Removing her glove, she focused, rapidly skimming her hand across the door's now broken latch. Nothing. Not a damn thing. She couldn't read signature or presence, there wasn't enough of an imprint to grasp at. A migraine formed quickly just from the strain of searching and Shaye relented, swearing softly to herself and her less than consistent 'sight'. Psychometry was a finite skill and a pain in the ass to manage.

Still, Shaye had two eyes, she pieces the scene together herself. "Looks like a regular jimmy job; went for the hinges and forced in the lock. Didn't bother with anything else." The alarms, still ringing, were not helping the headache. She moved away from the mains and used her torch to scan the neighboring space. Were the goods here really worth killing for?

Well at least the break in looked normal but he would be damned if anything else about this damned thing seemed to be normal at all. Reaching up, he touched his ear. As much as he was loathe to risk being taken away from the front, as it were, the fact of the matter was that the situation had changed.

This wasn't some numb B&E with a beating or whatever.

"Dispatch this is Ranger Lorcan, we've got a body on site at Warehouse HN212 of the Works, Medical district. Please be advised that Ranger Chaska and myself will be continuing our investigation."
he waited a second before adding, "Expect multiple casualties."

Something about this whole thing reeked. Picking up his pistol and torch again, he readied himself before nodding to Shaye at her assessment. Command had said she would be good for investigating scenes but that was the kind of basic knowledge anyone could have pulled up. He wasn't going to hold it against her right now though because they had bigger problems to solve.

"Get my six."

He didn't wait long for her to comply before moving into the warehouse proper. The first thing he noticed was rather telling; the warehouse was full of nondescript crates. So boring and basic, in fact, that they actually lacked any markings aside from a short, six digit, series of numbers and a barcode. He frowned ever so slightly and carried on, sweeping his light around slowly, methodically, as he swept through the warehouse.

As he turned around another stack of crates he pulled up short.

"Another body."
he reported to Shaye as he approached it, "Same wounds."

No legs.

Bloody everywhere.

Cavity in the abdomen.

Moving closer, Lorcan knelt down beside the body and examined it in more detail. As his torch was going over it he noted so bloody scratches along the forearms; defensive wounds. They didn't look to be too deep but they had been made by something with strength. He paused for a moment before picking something out of the abdomen wound. Thankfully he was wearing gloves but even so he didn't think they would need fingerprints on this. He held it up for Shaye to see.

"Fingernail. Human - broken off in the wound."
he reported before grimacing, "A human is tearing people apart with their bare hands. And this one is fresher... see any signs of a trail?"

This shit was getting shady as hell; the body count was going up and so far, they had zero answers. Brass wasn't going to like this, a double homicide. If they didn't catch the culprit quick, they'd never hear the end of it. Searching for clues of her own, Shaye took a quick look at the body and quickly noted of the more clinical attire "Not a guard and probably not our perk. Kinda looks like a doctor."
Fair enough, the ID wasn't groundbreaking. Any moron with eyes could have guessed that but if true, it begged the question. Why was he here?

"Hey..." she thought aloud, wondering if Lorcan would come to the same trail of inquiry. "Why would a doctor go to a warehouse, in person? Don't they have lab techs and droids for that?" She gestured to the surrounding crates, the mundane packing and little else. "Why did he have to come here himself?"

In her crouched position, Shaye got a better visual of the ground. Yes, it was bloody, but there was a disturbance in the blood pattern. It was a trail, leading away from the body. "Eyes on." She tailed the evidence pretty quickly and like a kath hound, she followed it, sweeping the area with light and blaster, all whilst checking back to keep eyes on Lorcan. Separating wasn't advisable in this situation but at least they still had sight of one another. Intently, Shaye studied the trail. It was mostly bipedal in nature, some evidence of staggering. Distinctly humanoid movements, all documented in the blood of the victims; the floor was stained, crates and walls streaked with trace. Whoever they were, they definitely came in this direction, moving at speed. Fleeing the scene? Shaye would have thought so as it was just criminal common sense.

But then the trail abruptly stopped. So did Shaye.

She stared at the space, and then around her, scanning low to the ground and then above, making sure there wasn't some weird, higher ground advantage tactic. But nothing. The bloodied evidence veered off, into a stack of crates. Thinking she may have cornered the bastard, the kiffar edged around, blaster rained on the slightest movement. There was no one in sight, but she certainly found something of interest. In the shadows of the crates, along the wall, was a crease in the surface just barely illuminated by a thin, bright light.

"You gotta be shittin' me..."

A door? It was! It was a kirffing hidden door! She double-checked, shouldered crates out the way to confirm her find. Definitely some sort of passage, the boxes around it were just hiding it from view. She trotted back to Lorcan, relaying her find back. "I shit you not, there's a concealed entrance back there, disguised with some crates. The trail leads right in, probably down to some lower level."

Lorcan would have to make the call on this. Though Shaye hated to admit it, this was out of her depths. Training didn't cover murder with misadventure.

"What ya got?"
Shaye looked at the nail, with morbid curiosity, even taking it into her hand. Clan elders warned against using the sight on traumatic objects; death and murder left powerful imprints, there were just certain things Kiffars shouldn't see. But Shaye forwent this, wanting more insight. She needed to see how this scene went down.

Boy, did she regret it. Opening herself up was a sick mistake. A violent, gruesome mistake. She saw glimpses of all of it, the murders, the disembowelment. She could hear the sickening tearing of limbs as well as the screams of those dying. Scorching heat engulfed her hand, the same sensation the murderer felt when he punched a hole in his victims' chests.

Narrowly avoiding the major crime scene, Shaye broke off the connection and hurled the contents of her stomach near a toppled crate.
“Whatever the kriff that thing is...it’s not human. Not even close.”

A doctor.

A doctor down in a medical supplies warehouse in the Work, miles away from the nearest clinic or laboratory? It stank worse than the body was starting to and that was pretty rank. But the clothing added up. This guy looked to have been a doctor of some kind, though the labcoat suggested he was more of a clinical science kind of doctor than a general practitioner.

Curious.

"In the middle of the night, too."
he agreed with Shaye with a deep frown, "This stinks, Chaska. I don't know if it's organized crime or some shady corporate thing but this is rotten."

Rooting around in the doctor's pockets, he turned up nothing of worth. There were a few pieces of paper but unfolding them revealed them to be nothing more than receipts. Not even interesting receipts either; it seemed that the good doctor just kept the receipts of anything he bought including the hot dog he'd had for lunch.

Who got a receipt for a hot dog?

He blinked a few times.

"A hidden door. Built into the crates."
he repeated before rubbing a hand over his face and muttering, "Of-karking-course there is..."

Lorcan knew that he should walk away. He should call it in to headquarters, get himself and the rookie away from it and get assigned some easy duties for awhile. Let everyone involved in this dirty karking business cover it up and let it go. But even as she was taking the fingernail from him he knew that he wasn't going to do that.

He wanted to say it was because a bust this big would mean a big promotion but he couldn't. There wasn't any naked self-interest in this for once; there was just a shit-tonne of curiousity and a need to get answers for everything he had seen so far.

Spinning round in alarm, Lorcan watched as his partner spewed her guts just aside from the second body. Part of him wanted to mock her for it but everyone had that kind of reaction around their first gruesume death. Some just managed to swallow it back down and keep smiling, as though seeing something so wrong wasn't going to cause them to lose sleep for years to come.

Instead of drawing attention to it he handed her a canteen of water... and a small hip flask of whiskey. Leaving her to wash the taste out, Lorcan moved up to the crate she had mentioned. He stared at it for a long moment.

He stared at it a little more.

And then he reached out and poked a section of the crate that looked like so many other sections... and the button was depressed into the crate and the doors opened to reveal a series of white glass and metal stairs that led down into a brightly lit metal corridor.

The stairs were covered in blood and bloody hand prints ran the length of the handrail. Lorcan gripped his pistol tighter as he took a deep breath.

"Stun first, ask questions later."
he told Shaye with a worried scowl, "I don't think this thing will mess around."

Shaye wasn't squeamish at the worst of times; she'd been on hunts, had gutted her fair few quarries. But this was different. This was brutal. Inhuman. And she the decision to try and envision it. No wonder the elders discouraged using the sight around death. Without a word, Shaye took Lorcan's small offering. She gulped the water but took a swig from the flask. Truthfully, she wanted more but right now, she needed to be top of her game.

Lorcan wasn't backing down. He was ready to pursue this, and Shaye the same. Bringing up the rear, she stared, silently impressed at her colleague's find. She had been right, it was a door. The signs, however, were not great. Bloody trail, leading down.

"We're walking in blind here, Lorcan." They still didn't technically know who the culprit was. Or their motives. They needed more information. No backup, necessarily, but some damn intel would be nice.

"Dispatch, this is Ranger Chaska. We found another body and are continuing our search. No suspects sighted yet." She glanced at Lorcan, silently dreading he'd make the fatal request for back up. This was a gory case but Shaye would see it through. She wasn't going to let anyone else finish what she started.

"Requesting additional information on our location; ownership. Customs records. Kriffing inventory, anything." Communication was strong. One less thing to worry about, especially as they began their descent.

Lorcan didn't need to tell her twice. Her blaster was primed and ready. If it moved, it was getting shot.

Lorcan gripped his pistol tighter and he made sure, one last time, that it was on stun before he moved. Even as Shaye was talking about them walking in blind he merely frowned slightly and nodded, stepping down to the base of the stairs. Holding his position while she called it in on their com systems, he was honestly surprised that the call managed to get through. He had honestly begun to expect that this whole place would be shielded and it would turn out to be a trap.

If not a trap then at least still incredibly awful for them going forwards.

At the end of the corridor it suddenly appeared.

3LMac.jpg

It was once a human woman and perhaps it still was... on a purely biological level.

She had torn at her own skin, peeling parts of her skin back to expose red, raw, muscle and stark white bone wherever it seemed she wanted to. Her biceps were exposed to the air but seemed oddly rather large for a woman her size. Looking at her face, Lorcan could admit that it seemed worse.

Surgical pins had been used to pull back her lips to allow her teeth to more easily tear into things. Into the flesh of the doctor and the guard based on the evidence above. Lorcan swallowed and aimed at her.

"Sector Rangers! Stand down!"

And suddenly she was moving.

She was far faster than anyone with flesh-stripped tendons had any right to be and his first shot went wide. As she closed the distance between then he fired again, hitting her in the chest. He went to instinctively relax - a stun shot to an unarmored chest was a good stun - when the worst happened.

She didn't even feel it.

Tackling him bodily to the ground, Lorcan managed to get his arms up in front of him even as he lost his pistol. She grabbed at his armored forearms and he thought for a moment that she was too out of her mind to actually attack effectively - right up until he saw his armor beginning to warp under the strength of her hands alone. With inhuman strength she shook him violently, his helmeted head hitting the ground hard.

"Karking shoot her already Chaska!"

At first, Shaye thought it was a trauma patient or a juiced-up spice addict on a major trip. But then she saw the damage, the mutilation. No one should be walking, not in that state. Karabast, the skin was practically peeled right off her, exposing all sorts of flesh and muscle. Shaye's statement earlier was right on the money. This woman wasn't human. Not anymore. So, the kiffar had no qualms in shooting it dead.

But the mangled mess moved faster than expected, and even when hit with a stun, it didn't go down. Not good. Without hesitating, Shaye changed the setting of her blaster; if stun wasn't going to shit then why hold back? Time to up the ante and move for a kill shot. They could explain to the brass later, providing they live to see this through.

The only problem was, Lorcan was right in the line of the fire; the freak was shaking him like a rag doll, ruining Shaye's clear shot. "Stop karking moving then!"

Now or never.

Taking the shot, Shaye then watched at the force of the blaster sent the mutant sprawling back. A portion of its jaw had been seared straight off, the scorched mandible laying detached on the floor close to Lorcan's position. Kriff, the monster was still moving, twitching. Would it attack again?

Shaye didn't let the creature leave her sight; instead, she called behind her, making sure her back up was still breathing. "Lorcan, you good?"

His ears were ringing, the back of his head hurt like hell and his wrists were aching through the armor that had been well and truly broken to the point where it was unusable. Which was annoying because that meant that the enemy had just wrecked his wipcord thrower, which was the only non-lethal takedown method he had available to him other than his stun-settings. And right now he was wholly convinced that stun wasn't doing anything.

Was that the things jaw on the ground?

A question for later.

Pulling himself to his feet again, Lorcan reached down and drew his vibrosword rather than any of his guns. His pistol was still on the ground but that could be picked back up in a moment. The creature that had once been a woman was up again and before she could attack again she needed to be dealt with. With his sword in hand, Lorcan launched into a sweeping strike, cutting both of her legs off at the knees and slicing one of her outstretched hands off at the same time.

He jumped to the side as the creature fell to the ground heavily but seemed to not actually notice the fact that it had lost limbs. Well it seemed irritated about having to crawl but it didn't seemed to feel any pain. Breathing heavily, he picked up his pistol and holstered it even as he kept moving to keep the thing from crawling up to him.

"I'm alright."
he confirmed with Shaye before scowling, "What the hell is this thing...? Kark I don't know if we should kill it or just leave it as it is."

The way the limbs weren't bleeding anymore was... alarming to say the least.

Lorcan, quite literally, hacked the freak to pieces. And Shaye watched, moderately impressed and thoroughly shocked... because the kriffing woman was still kracking moving! How is that even possible?! She didn't even groan or scream, there was visibly no reaction to pain. Just, chop, chop, chop and down onto the ground she went, wiggling and writhing like some crippled nightmare.

Shaye's better judgement said to put the thing out of its misery; now that it wasn't moving so much, she could get a clean shot. But technically, the mutant woman wasn't much of a threat anymore. With no immediate threat and danger to life, anything more would not be excessive force. Kriff. Should have aimed better.

"Sounds kind of sick and twisted, but I say we keep it as it is. Drag it back to HQ alive, on a leash." Kneeling for a better look, Shaye stared at the mangled mess, inspecting it. "Otherwise brass won't believe any of this." Out of morbid curiosity, the kiffar poked at one of the severed limbs, partly expecting some sort of response. Not even a twitch. Thank krack for that.

Rising to her feet and glancing amount them, Shaye took note of their surroundings. Looked like an administration space, leading into what she could only assume were medical facilities. She told Lorcan, "You cut it, you watch it," and walked away, leaving him to stand guard over the one-armed threat. With that monster somewhat detained, perhaps they could get a better look round, finally find some answers.

The datapads were a bust; Shaye didn't have the access codes and she wasn't patient enough to try and decipher them. Splicing wasn't her style...dropping kicking them into a wall, however, was. "Screw this..." she huffed, dumping her failed attempts at gathering intel. She'd go the old fashion route and search through discarded files on the desks.

"Nothing....Nothing. More nothing. Still more nothing." A lot of it was just pages of graphs, statistics and diagrams. Biological ones, of various body parts. Then she found it. Jackpot.

She returned to Lorcan, brandishing her clue "Got somethin' " She took out a photo, showing a woman in profile. Hard to make an exact match but it could easily be their woman. "Personal info too, mostly basic stuff. Blood type. Height. Weight. No name though, just a number and what looks like...consent forms? Signed and everything, dated too."

Lorcan toyed with the idea of pinning the crawling creature to the floor by stabbing through it into the floor but decided against it purely because he wanted to keep his sword close at hand in case there were more of these creatures. It seemed obvious that this one had killed the guys upstairs but that didn't mean that it was the only one down here. Honestly, Lorcan wasn't sure what the hell was going on here but it seemed bigger than a single creature.

"I don't know if we'll be able to restrain it alive."
he admitted honestly, "The thing is freakishly strong - even with only one arm I'd put credits on it being able to pull itself free of some cuffs. To say nothing of the fact that it just shrugs off stun bolts like they tickle."

Tutting a little bit, he kept leading the crippled creature around in small circles, able to keep ahead of it's slow crawl by virtue of still having working legs. Real leg up on the competition there. Reaching out, without taking his eyes off the creature, Lorcan looked over the forms.

He frowned.

"Honestly? I don't understand half of this right now but this bit right here? Under list of procedures that this woman agreed to?"
he tapped one with a scowl, "Teeth whitening. They lied to this woman - unless we're just going to say that teeth whitening was part of this process?"

Scowling a little bit, Lorcan nodded to the creature.

"My turn - you keep watch or mercy kill it."

Moving to a different door, Lorcan looked at it's keypad for a moment before deciding that he wasn't going to bother being subtle considering they had already broken into the damned facility. Slicing the pad with his sword, he grinned as the security functions took effect and the door automatically opened so as to not trap people in the event of an electrical failure. Inside was another surgery room and this one had a doctor in!

Unfortunately he was dead with a gaping hole in his guts where yet another of the creatures that had once been human was currently chewing loudly through a mouthful of liver.

"... huh, they eat the liver."
he noted as it spotted him and screamed angrily at him as Lorcan backed up into the corridor again, "We got another one, rookie!"

Lorcan's logic made sense, it would mean one less problem to deal with. The freak was better off dead anyway. Not even thinking twice, Shaye marched up to the crippled creature, her blaster raised point-blank range. She fired twice, just to be sure. Thankfully, the mangled mess finally stopped moving, allowing Shaye to follow up behind Lorcan. It wasn't like they could save her, not after the process she'd endured. Why would someone do that to another living being? What was the purpose? The move? Better yet, who was the culprit? They needed to find some answers.

Apparently, the mutant number 1 wasn't the only victim either. When Locan sounded the alarm, Shaye made a move for it, firing at the creature's chest but the kirffing thing took the hit. It just stood there, not even registering the still smoldering wound burning through its torso.

"Well, kriff...Didn't see that coming."
Did these freaks even feel pain?

Apparently not because with another ear-shattering scream, it launched at Shaye, knocking the wind right out of her. Trying to shoot the damn thing before it went for her liver, Shaye thrashed and hollered, kicking at it to try and gain some distance. Next thing she knew, it crushed her blaster in one of its meaty paws. Her fingers, coiled on the gripped, her broken instantly. Unlike the beast, Shaye's pain receptors were working just fine and she yelled in pain, her right hand on fire. Instinctively, the Kiffar raised her other hand, attempting to gauge out the creature's eyes, anything in order to loosen its grip. Instead, the sharpened jaws latched onto her hand, biting down to the bone.

"Lorcan, kriffing shoot it!"

He could have shot it but right now that seemed like a bad idea - the things had managed to ignore stun shots and lethal round shots straight to the chest. It wasn't even like the blast didn't do any damage; the blast to the chest burst open as much of the unarmored chest as it would be expected to do. If anything it had done more damage that he would have expected it to do. The difference was that the creature just didn't seem to give a flying kark.

So shooting it was out.

But one thing had worked before.

With a wordless shout, Lorcan swung for the fences with his vibrosword and cut clean through the creature's neck. Instantly the pressure on Shaye's fingers would disappear as the life left the damned thing in one clean swing. Grabbing the head, he pulled it away from Shaye and kicked the now headless body to one side.

Breathing heavily, he stabbed his vibrosword through the skull of the one that had been the crawling one up until Shaye had executed it. Looking at the rookie for a long moment, he thought of something.

"We can't call this in."
he told her simply, "This is big, rookie... cover-up big and the local PD here are not adverse to taking bribes. The Rangers in the area... I'm not sure about. I think we might have to follow this up on our own."

He frowned deeper.

"And by that I mean I will."
he told her firmly, "If I get caught mid-investigation I'm in deep shit. You get yourself the hell clear of this stink and keep your career clean."

A moment later and Shaye could have worn that creature would have gone for her throat. Lorcan's last-minute save was a relief, to say the least, but the pain in her hands was still very much present. Against her better judgment, she looked at the mangled mess that hands. Blood was oozing out from the bite wound, the flesh and skin nearly torn clean off. Several fingers were broken, bent and twisted just like her blaster. That was a write-off. Great, just kriffing great. If she wasn't recovering from her rush of adrenaline, Shaye would have kicked the beast herself, right in its kracking face. Would punting the head across the lab be considered as evidence tampering? She didn't care. This had been a long shift.

Labouring to sit herself up, Shaye looked again at the decapitated body. It had surgical modification, just like the first one. Who would want to create such things? Better yet, why? So lost in thought, and the partial bleeding, Shaye almost missed the last portion of Lorcan's speech.

"Wait, what? You're joking, right?" Using the wall for support, Shaye found her feet. "Nah uh, Lorcan. Not gonna happen." She may be a rookie but she still had a badge. No way in Hoth was she just going pretend this night didn't happen. "You don't get to make that play. I'm not some trainee, I'm a ranger just like you. We start this together, we finish it. We can deal with the dirt and bust this care wide open. Screw the PD"

Lorcan should know better than to ask Shaye to step aside. That was just insulting.

As if proving her point, the Kiffar achily made her way back to the discarded files. She couldn't very well flick through them but she could still make a show by looking over them once more. "Besides, I'm not going to let you take all the credit."

Lorcan drew his knife and started about a grim business; gathering evidence.

They had killed both of the creatures and now the only way to gain evidence about what had been done to them was to take the physical evidence from the bodies themselves. Cutting into the bodies, Lorcan did his best not to gag even as he cut out the artificially inflated kidneys of the two creatures and hiding them in a bag. He lifted some of the muscles off the arms with the same knife with a grunt, adding them and the head to the bag as well.

He made a mental note to swag out the bag for an airtight pack or something at the earliest convenience. He scoffed at her as he collected his weapons.

"You're basically the untrained intern."
he joked back to her as he finished up and she turned to try rifling through files with injuries to her fingers and hand, "What did you find over here?"

Walking over to her from behind as she looked at the documents, he leaned over beside her on the left side. Without a word of warning he pulled the trigger, stunning her with a stun-bolt from his retrieved blaster pistol. She wasn't really wearing anything armored so it went straight into her heart from behind and she would be out like a light, unlike the creatures. Catching her stunned form, he would sling her over his shoulder before carrying her up into the warehouse.

Setting her down beside the corpse of the doctor, he would busy himself for a few minutes setting fires within the underground base to disrupt the operation even if the local PD were in on it. Before he left he called in for medical evacuation for Shaye so that she would be recovered before the stun wore off.

Then he left.
