TG-3

Tangle Gun

Description:
The TG-3 Tangle Gun was designed by Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc., for police and security forces to capture unruly suspects with a minimum risk to public and officer safety. The weapon resembles a short, fat blaster pistol with a wide mouthed barrel and prominent reload cartridge on the topside. It was developed as an easy to use, quickly reloadable, multi-shot alternative to the ubiquitous and popular whip cord launcher, or large and unwieldy electro-net guns. While the system suffers from several kinks and limitations that have prevented it from gaining widespread popularity, it continues to see use in some core world police forces, planetary militias, and occasionally poachers and bounty hunters. The gun and reload cartridges are not expensive, but can be difficult to come by on many worlds.

The TG-3 fires reactive chemical pellets mixed with a primitive shrinking agent. The pellet, when exposed to air, explosively expands into a sticky webbed net approximately 2.5 meters across. The net is touch-heat activated, and automatically contracts on contact with warm surfaces such as a living body or active droid. It then wraps around the target and tightens, trapping the target almost instantly in a tough, rubbery webbing which is difficult to escape- once captured, the restraints must be cut away with a sharp object, and is highly resistant to abrasion and pulling. While it is an effective capture system when it works, several problems exist with the weapon; the webbing often contracts too much around the head and throat of many near human species or those with similar anatomies, resulting in the target being accidentally suffocated and sometimes killed by the pressure of the webbing interfering with their respiratory systems. The chemical compound utelized makes no distinction between heat sources, causing any heat generating objects to trigger contraction- such as many ship bulkheads with heavy machinery on the other side, warm speeder engines, lamps, etc, making it difficult to use in confined spaces- contact with multiple targets simultaneously can produce wildly unpredictable results, including "capturing" inanimate objects, pulling two subjects into a collision, or simple plastering itself to a wall. The developmental nature of the shrinking agent currently produced by Merr-Sonn Munitions means that only a limited number of pellets can be compressed and contained by the reload cartridges, giving the weapon a very low capacity, in addition to a very short effective range- the net loses its stickiness and contracting properties at distances beyond 25m, and without a heat reaction it becomes soft and easily torn, at which point it generally ends up an icky lump on the ground. Finally, because the compound is primarily oxygen reactive for expansion, it does not function in vacuum or planetary atmospheres particularly lacking in oxygen particles. Despite these trade-offs, many still consider it a viable alternative to more reliable but single use, difficult to reload whipcord or net launchers.

Intent: A significantly reduced early version of the Anti-Riot Tangle Gun 7 of the future. This weapon provides an alternative to the net and whipcord launchers available on many gauntlet systems currently available, useful for taking targets alive- if you're careful. As far as I have found, we don't currently have any similar weapons outside of large electro net launchers and whipcords, so I think this falls under the "unusual technology" rule, rather being generic tech, despite its limitations.

hmm...I'm not really sold on the accidental death thing. But then, I suppose that would be for the opposing player to decide. Approved
