THEME
Continuation from funeral thread

Distant rumbling indicated the thunderstorm was moving away. The rain underneath the canopy of jungle trees had lessened slightly and Byron was spared somewhat. His walk from the ceremony had taken him leisurely through the tropical forest and back within view of his ship. But he did not feel like working on the express courier. Even with the normal heat of Kloss's climate would not completely prevent him from getting hypothermia. As he realized this he picked up his pace to an even trot until he was completely under his solid ship.

He was pretty sure Thalia had followed him. She seemed like she had possibly wanted to get away from the main funeral ceremony. He knew her when she had appropriated his rented vehicle on Corellia to chase arms dealers. But things were definitely more calm now. A few lawn chairs and furnishings were strewn about collecting rain water. "Kark..." The padawan muttered and began dragging things out of the rain even though most of what had gotten wet was thoroughly soaked. "Mind helping me move stuff out of the rain?" He hollered hoping it would go quicker.

The area around his ship had become his home in the past few weeks. Tools and equipment needed for repairing his ship and a rough looking fabric pavilion hung over much of it. Then a closer rumble made Byron think twice about how consistent the weather could be. His eyes looked up as if trying to gauge if his creeping sense about the weather was correct. The planet answered him with an obvious increase in the downpour. Typical It was not long before his boots had mud around it. The mud was washed away as quickly as it was collected and his outfit was drenched. But he would not stop until everything was put away for the rest of the storm.

When Byron did finish he looked to Thalia to see how she had fared, assisting him or otherwise. The man put a few of the chairs up in a way that would have them beginning to dry out and maybe be available for use later. "You want some tea?" His squelching boots left prints on the loading ramp into his ship. First thing he did was start heating water. Inside his ship where it was dry it felt a little cooler than it was outside. It made the man shiver and wonder if he should change before catching something.

Thalia followed behind Byron, her pace a bit slower, not only due to the difficulties her injury was causing her, but to take in the sight of the jungle that seemed to go on past the horizons. It did not take long did she realize, she was not dressed for jungle temple trekking. Even in flats, she was having a difficult time navigating puddles and mud. The rain was letting up for the moment, more heavier drops came from the trees and the overhanging leaves that stood above her. She peaked out occasionally from under her umbrella to the bright colored flowers and eventually felt she was far away enough from others to relax.

She inhaled deeply and let out a long sigh, hesitantly reaching outward with her senses, only to hear Byron calling out for her help as the skies opened up again. She frowned, grabbing the lightest item she saw and brought aboard his ship. As he scrambled to get the rest of his belongings onto the ship, Thalia closed her umbrella and looked around, trying to decide if she liked such a ship. She heard the slosh of wet shoes and looked at her ruined flats and frowned before stepping out of them and laying them against a heater before switching it on to a low setting and sitting near it herself.

Byron entered the ship, soaked as he asked her if she wanted tea. "I will take a cup." she simply stated before she continued to look around her, "I'm guessing you live on this thing and not in the temple?" she asked with a small grin.

"Yeah. Feels more like home than that place. Not even sure I'd call myself a Jedi but I'm learning." The clothes on the man were several shades darker due to the rain he had soaked up. Taking off his shoes he put them near Thalia's. The other clothes, save for his pants and shirt, were emptied of any pocket change or items he had been keeping in them. Just out of sight he pulled off his shirt and put on the bright orange one he had bought from some tourist shop. The vibrant V neck was one of the few shirts he owned still but it was dry.

It did not take long for the water to heat up and for the tea to be made. Putting on a set of sandals, Byron walked back over to the prepared beverage and began pouring two cups and brought one over to Thalia. "Living out of a ship I guess seems kind of....trashy huh?" He admitted and rubbed the back of his short hair cut. A slightly embaressed smile on his face was there for a moment until he turned his focus to blowing on the hot liquid.

The sound of his astromech's rolling body was heard before the droid was seen. It got halfway into the room and turned its photoreceptors to see the two organics lounging around. Byron stared back at it but it warbled and then went back the way it came. One of its manipulator arms dragged a towel behind it. A moment later and it began to mop up various water spots on the deck and adjust the angle of the footwear as if it had a more efficient way of having them dry.

"How about you? Where's home for a Sector Ranger like yourself?" Both of Byrons hands cupped his mug. He raised his wet pant legs up and debated whether or not he should take a shower. He definitely had to clean his clothes but didn't have enough to still present himself appropriately. Waiting on the ship half naked for his clothes to be cleaned wasn't ideal when he had company. In the end he decided to wait until his tea was finished before revisiting the idea.

He didn't even consider himself a Jedi and Thalia had to scoff at such a remark, "Yes! You must be since you're humble like one." she shook her head and Byron disappeared around the corner and returned in dry clothing, to which Thalia felt her eyes adjust harshly as she enjoyed the blue, the orange did its job though to stand out. When the water was ready he readied the tea and handed her a cup.

"Trashy?" Thalia shook her head, "Nah, I've lived in trash, this is...well, its better than sleeping in trash. As soon as I got my ship, I never wanted to leave it." she took the cup and thanked him, lifting the cup to her lips to gently blow on it. Though she more enjoyed the aroma of the spices used to give it flavor than she did the actual drink. She heard something rumble along the floor as his droid came out to do some housekeeping, Thalia turned just a little too far and a little too fast and the pain of her injury swiftly and sharply reminded her of its presence. She hissed as she inhaled through her gritting teeth, resting a free hand on her abdomen until the throb subsided.

Inhaling she let out a slow breath, "Home for me?" she frowned, never really knowing to answer such questions, "I have a place on Coruscant where I'm stationed, but...but I don't think that is necessarily what I call home." she said taking a sip of the tea, distracting the pain from her abdomen now to the pain of the hot liquid that stung her tongue. "As poetic as it sounds, I just haven't found home yet." she shrugged.

"You okay?" Byron had noticed her wince and show signs of pain. He didn't follow up what she had said with anything.

"Well if it's any consolation I thought I had a home..." A poor attempt at trying to cheer Thalia up. "...I guess I'm actually looking myself too." The man had been resting his ship on the outskirts of the Jedi Temple, coming and going mostly involved with Jedi and only recently doing what probably counted as official apprentice work. When Byron had been confident that things were stable back on Contruum, everything had taken a sharp turn. The first time he had met Thalia, things had gotten out of hand quickly.

"Heyyyy...soooo..." He took a comically long sip from his hot tea before continuing. "....you know some force stuff too right?" Byron had remembered her excising some ability during their first meeting.

"I'll be fine," she reassured him, but left it at that, letting the conversation continue while they both talked about their nonexistent homes. She couldn't help a small grin, knowing the feeling of what you thought was home was now nonexistent or a place, like in her case, she would never want to return. Thalia took another drink from her cup as Byron did so also from his own cup of tea, her eyes resting on his as she tried to read him more thoroughly.

He lowered his cup and asked sheepishly about her knowledge of the Force and in response, her own cheeks reddened and glanced away, looking down at her free hand. It was instinct from her habits of conjuring the invisible power and not knowing where it came from, "I know some..." her voice grew quiet as though to keep from anyone else from knowing, "No one else knows, not even the Rangers I work with, you still can't tell anyone." she said lowering her cup of tea, asking him to keep his promise not to reveal this to anyone.

"It was getting a bit unpredictable not too long ago...so I had to accept help from someone, a Jedi. Do you still promise not to tell anyone?" she asked him, trying to find reassurance and trust from the man, "I dunno what would happen and I don't think it would be good." Thalia frowned, glancing again at her palm, thinking about the worst case repercussions from those in the Sector Rangers.

Apparently it was not a subject that Thalia had expected since he could visibly see her get embarrassed by his recollection of her otherwise supernatural abilities. She spoke about her powers getting out of hand and Byron had been warned that a lack of discipline with this sort of thing could lead to major consequences. It lined up with what had been going on so far.

"I don't see why they would need to know." He said with a shrug and smile. Having an inate ability you were born with didn't seem like the type of thing someone should be judged for. He was perhaps biased about it now but Byron had felt that way since before he had left Contruum.

"You have any tips on how to...." He waved his hand in the air to pantomime using the force in an exaggerated manner. "...tips or tricks then?" Thalia seemed like a novice at this sort of thing too so it gave him a sense of comfort rather than talking to one of the more sage like masters or knights.

Thalia opened her mouth to answer his response, but his shrug and smile told her it was more rhetorical. She knew she had her own reasoning and it probably sounded absurd to Jedi like him, even Max had his opinions about it. To keep herself from saying more about it, she took a sip from her cup and he seemed to move on to a different topic, inquiring about her own abilities. Thalia grinned at his exaggerated motions. "Tips or tricks?" she grinned wider.

"Oh, I am not sure, shouldn't I be asking you? You're the Jedi...I'm just, just a Ranger." she said holding up the her cup, letting it hover gently over her palm, "I am better at other things though, like reading things." she said looking around the ship before her gaze fell back on Byron. "Like touching it and recalling its history." she explained, "Psychometry? I used it ever since I could remember, but I am a little more careful with it now."

She took the last drink of her tea, draining the contents, "I don't think I would be good at teaching you anything." she frowned.

Byron wasn't too sure what he was. Sure the others were training and he was learning some things but from what he had seen, padawans were taken on by masters or mentored by knights. So far it technically had not been said out loud by Hannibal who was probably the closest thing Byron had to a master.

He watched as she used the force to move the cup. It was surprising and it was clear on Byron's face that he was fixated. The expression changed into outright disbelief. "That is ridiculous and I wouldn't believe if you not for the things I've seen and heard of the past couple of months." A friendly smile coming across his stubbly face.

Byron's smile left when he heard her self-doubting tone. "Why's that?" With it cool enough for his tastes he drank some more of his own tea.

He smiled, and Thalia smiled also, setting the cup aside and leaned carefully back against the wall, her core muscles reminding her of the need to heal as many mundane movements seemed to be strenuous. He seemed to challenge her doubts and she quirked and eyebrow, "Don't you need a Jedi to teach you things?" her serious expression turned light.

"I mean you're here in the kingdom of Jedi, surely you have a teacher, maybe even fifty teachers." she waved toward the direction of the temple, "I heard they have everything you could possibly want to learn about. Really, it's something you should...I don't know, feel lucky to have..." she let her voice fall quiet, her thoughts turning in her mind as she tried to give him a convincing argument as to why she was not equipped to be of any use to him, except perhaps company.

She caught his gaze for a moment and sighed, "Ok, give me your hand." she told him, grimacing as she pulled herself up straight. Once she took his hand she slid off the scarlet gem bracelet and placed it in his palm. "Sometimes, I just like to practice on this, it's always brought me warmth and strength. Whoever had it before had much love to give." explained Thalia, "Tell me what you feel from it. Close your eyes, open yourself to its memory, its past."

"I don't think so...technically. I mean, you can learn physics on your own with some guidance but if you go to school...." He shrugged as he trailed off as he hoped she would guess where he had been going.

"Oh yeah, they teach, I learn what I can but...I dunno think Han-... Master Grayza is my master. Though I should probably ask him about that..." After he finished he looked towards her and obeyed her request. His rough hand from regularly working on the ship they were sitting in. His eyes stared at the bracelet she placed in his palm for a moment and then back up at her. Thalia explained a bit and Byron felt like this was definitely a lesson if he had ever heard one. He wasn't about to let it go to waste.

Clearing his throat Byron would close his eyes and take a deep breath. "Its-" She spoke about the object's memory but then he reminded himself that the Force was all around them. Even the basics still took conscious thought to remember still. Hopefully it came with time like most skills. That much gave him hope.

A few moments would pass as he tried to focus on it and make sure that there wasn't anything to misinterpret. "There's a...motivation...like the slightest feeling of a current. Effort to prove something." His thoughts were beginning to drift more towards Thalia with the bracelet in his hands. His eyes opened after a moment. "You met a Mandalorian?" That was one of the few images he had seen. Most of it had been feelings, slight sensations rather than memories. It was definitely something he would want to practice regularly. He hadn't realized his fingers had curled around the bracelet while getting a read on it.

She watched him as he focused, clutching the bracelet as the Force shifted around him. Thalia could feel the gentleness of the Light wash around her while the silence settled for a bit longer than what she was comfortable with. A frown slowly formed, thinking maybe she didn't explain how to do it correctly. However, Byron spoke up, describing what he felt and saw and slowly her own expression turned into puzzlement, and then embarrassment as her checks flushed a bright crimson. However, she was still confused as to what he saw compared to what she saw and then it clicked when he mentioned the Mandalorian.

"Ah eeee-yes, yes I did..." she said a bit flustered as though she had just inadvertently let him read her personal diary, "A while back, he was...well...not too impressive. He's a ranger, I seen him around a couple times." Thalia reached out to take his hand and try to pry his fingers away from her bracelet, "I think its the costume that is the big deal." she explained, pausing in her attempt to get her bracelet back, remembering being aboard the slave ship.

"And, for the record, maybe I do have something to prove, that shouldn't matter, everyone has something to prove." she said still a bit flustered about him reading something so vulnerable of herself.

The armored warriors of legend. Byron had heard stories. They were just as outlandish as the Jedi Order was, or at least had been before Byron had learned more. Now they were just, different than what he expected. It stood to reason that Mandalorians would be too. "Oh" A hint of disappointment in his voice.

It seemed like she was having second thoughts about letting him read her accessory. His callused palm flattened as he felt her trying to get it. Her matter-of-fact response gave Byron the impression he must have struck a nerve. "Sorry I-..." With the hand empty he returned it to a cup.

A finger tapped against the rim of the cup for a moment before stopping as Byron tried to come up with something to say. It felt a little awkward seeing the woman act that way. "Here..." The man pulled up his necklace from around his neck. "...I guess it's a Kyber crystal, same type of crystal the jedi use for their lightsabers. My..." He wanted to let the woman know it wasn't bad to share things about herself. Maybe he also just felt like sharing a part of his own identity with someone with all the change and strangeness that had been happening lately.

She quickly noted the disappointment on his face as she seemed not too inspired by the fairy tale of the Mandalorian. She frowned also, but feeling bad for letting down his hopes, she quickly added, "But that's just me..."

She ran her fingers through her hair, glancing away as he allowed her to have her bracelet back. Clearly uncomfortable, he seemed to be uncertain on how to handle her discomfort. However, she paused, her emotional walls that were forming also paused and curiosity returned as he pulled a necklace from around his collar, explaining its purpose.

Thalia glanced at the crystal and then back at Byron, trying to get a read of where he was going with this. She was silent for a moment, the confusion left her features and a look of embarrassment and guilt came instead. However, she could sense a peace that he was trying to create between them. Reaching up, she held the crystal between her thumb and forefinger and closed her eyes. "I saw Hutts gamble with these, they said they would look for a slave who could hear it sing."

Though she couldn't hear its song, she could feel something else, a stir in the Force as it made its presence known, and then its connection to Byron, "Are you going to put it in your lightsaber?" she asked him, her gaze connecting with his eyes.

He didn't know too much about the atrocities that plagued the galaxy each time he learned about some new crime or wrong doing he didn't lose his belief that there was hope for something better. The children Thalia mentioned he wanted to help keep that thing from happening. His fists clenched but then relaxed heading her ask him a question. He shrugged and scratched the back of his head. "I think so. Probably. Don't really know how to make one or what mine is going to be. I hear there's some different options." Most of the hyped up lightsaber talk actually came from some of the younglings though Byron couldn't help but overhear them from time to time before being shushed by one of the older members of the Order.

"Lightsabers are cool and all but I think I still would prefer to not have to use weapons if possible." Saying that out sparked his mind and he went to his cabin. A moment would pass as he looked to find something and then come back out. In his hands he held a pair of gauntlets. "I think with these maybe I can avoid contributing to the number of lost limbs." He meant both as a person who wouldn't be slicing up people with an excessive use of force but also the gauntlets would keep his own arms safe as well. "Those sith guys seem pretty scary though. I don't think I'd be able to take one of them on anyways." He reminded himself he didn't have much of a reason to start thinking about a fighting style or anything of the sort when he wasn't even going to be running into a dark sider. There was a very low chance of that sort of thing happening.

Thalia was surprised to see him so uncertain about his decision to build a lightsaber, she thought that was the coolest weapon she had seen. Gently, she tucked the crystal back under his collar, seeing its relief indented under his shirt. Suddenly he walked back into his ship, leaving her sitting, curious to where he had suddenly disappeared to, but just as quickly as he left, he returned though this time with a pair of gauntlets. Thalia looked at the armor and then back at Byron with a confused look as he proceeded to explain their purpose and his desire not to further harm his opponents.

She took one and examined it closer, "Yeah, but what about the rest of you..." she gave him a coy grin while trying on one, but did not like the fit as she immediately removed it from her arm. "You can let me do the cutting, the Sith don't scare me." she told him, with a reassuring nod, "I cut, and you can knock their lights out." she said holding up her fists playfully and tapping his chest with one fist.

"Seriously though, don't let them get to you, when the times comes, you'll be a fantastic Jedi, isn't that the darkside that wants you to fear them anyways?"

Thalia gave an obvious but fair point about the coverage limitations. His eyes stared at the gauntlets and then at the rest of his body before looking back up at Thalia. "Never really wore armor before. Isn't it kind of heavy?" The closest thing to body armor was Byron's flightsuit which wasn't exactly trooper armor or meant for any kind of combat other than the type that involved using the starship and even then he wouldn't describe himself as an expert fighter pilot.

Sith scared him. They were dangerous from what he had heard in every regard. The zeal with which Thalia spoke and the graphic nature didn't bother him but it told Byron how violently inclined the woman was. Looking back at the gauntlets he wondered if a year from now he would be jaded and changed from his experiences in the same way that Thalia had been shaped by her's. If Byron was going to fight a Sith he would welcome the Ranger's help.

In the end she gave him some words of encouragement which he took with a slight smile and shifted as she touched his chest playfully. "Is it wrong to fear what's dangerous though? Maybe that's why.... I'm just...confused and unsure of what I'm supposed to do I guess." He shrugged with the gauntlets in his hands. Depending on the person they had given him different answers about the Force let alone the Dark Side. "I mean...fear can be helpfu. Right?" He gave a hopeful smile like a kid guessing at an answer in front of a class. He was mostly dry now and placed the gauntlets on the table near them before going to start heating up more water for tea. Byron wasn't thirsty, he just wasn't sure what else to do now. In hindsight, he wondered if he should have been more fun and upbeat with Thalia rather than take a turn for the more serious. You've got a badass ranger in your ship and you decide to talk about your existential issues and it's only the second time you've met her. First opportunity, switch the convo to something you DO know. His hands fiddled with some of the packaging to some tea awkwardly with his back turned to Thalia.

His smile conflicted with his feelings about the Sith, she could tell it bothered him that he feared them and they have demonstrated they were something to be feared. However, it was not how Thalia thought of them, their fear mongering was a weakness, no power, so they ruled by intimidation. He asked if fear could be helpful and Thalia frowned, thinking on it, and she gave a shrug.

"I'm sure it could, it could drive you to do something about it, to protect those you care for, to learn to become stronger." She stopped, finding herself feeling oddly Jedi about that saying. She began to wonder if she heard a Jedi speaking of such topics because it certainly did not sound like herself. "I would think it would be damaging if it causes you to break before it, to adhere to pure obedience because something terrible will happen if you do not."

Thalia watched him reheat the kettle, letting the silence fall before she decided to change the topic.

"So when are you going to come to the core to visit me?" she asked him with a coy grin.

Slowly his brow furrowed and his expression showed a bit of surprise. Thankfully his back was turned so she wouldn't see it. Hesitating, Byron would clear his throat firs.t "Visit? I didn't know I was invited." The man turned around and leaned against the counter a little.

"Corellia right?" Maybe she meant Coruscant since he remembered hearing that was where the Sector Rangers were based. "I used to go to school in the Core but haven't been back in years. Are you from there?" The water was heated again quickly but Byron took his time preparing new cups.

She had began to learn that even with backs turned to her, she had the upper-hand in her senses, the surprise rolled off him subtly, but Thalia's grin grew wider. She held back a giggle to his response and inhaled deeply, calming her own nerves of just inviting a guy, well not just any guy, but a Jedi back to her place. Her comm chimed, someone paging her to return to the transports and Byron turned around, inquiring where she lived.

"Coruscant, and no, I'm not from there. I was born and raised in the darkness of mines." she explained, feeling a bit unease in explaining where she had come from. Her head bowed in thought and glanced back up at Byron, "A slave, you know." she gently nudged her shoes away from the heater with her toe; they were dry enough for her journey back to the temple, but she knew they were only to get wet again. A mental note to not wear dress shoes on a Jedi world was quickly plugged away as she looked around for something to write with.

"Here..." she said looking back and forth but instead took his hand, using his arm as a notepad and gently wrote down where he could find her. "I have to leave, the shuttles are warming up. Anytime though..." she nodded looking back into his eyes, "Then you can show me your tricks that you've learned from the Jedi." she grinned and grabbed her umbrella.

"Maybe you'll even be a Knight by then!" she said pressing her hand against her stomach as she descended down the ramp, "I'm serious, anytime!"
