The scorching heat of Tatooine's twin suns never abated in its merciless mission over the desert sands. For Ort’kuar, this meant waiting for several hours a day before heading into the Jutland wastes to track the day's quarry. Simply put, it was reckless to undertake a hunt in such temperatures, the only option was to wait until the heat dropped and the nighttime cold began to set in. He had been on the hunt now for three days, setting out from the distant village that had been set up, on his bantha, two massiffs in tow, to scout the route ahead into the rocky mountain range so that his tribe could make the move into the cooler mountains for the long summer ahead.

On day two of his scouting, the young Tusken had picked up the trail of dewback and - keen to see where they were headed (as a profitable score for the tribe they could make) - he had set up his makeshift tent, and settled in, intent on picking up their trail in the afternoon of the following day.

Now that time was here, the young Tusken gathered his things, dismantled the tent and stowed it back on the Bantha, collected his weapons and, with a whistle to his dogs, proceeded ahead on foot. From his knowledge of the area, around this time of day, local flora would be headed for the windward side of the large dunes, where moisture tended to gather, and thus under-sand plants grew, for their evenings eating. And so, it was in that direction he headed. The temperature was lower now, and with his natural resistance to the heat, born of a life in the sands, combined with the protection afforded him by his robes, he pressed on ahead, the massifs plodding along behind him.

Finally, he climbed a rocky outcrop and dropped to a crouch - spying the herd of Dewback before him.

One of them, a young buck, was slower than the rest, limping from a wound on its aft leg, presumably caused by a fight with another male. He clicked his tongue and whistled, snapping his fingers as an instruction for the dogs to advance, snapping and wailing as they did. Immediately, the herd moved, easily outmanoeuvring the dogs, who fell back following another whistle, leaving the herd to continue on its journey north.

The weaker buck was not so lucky. The dogs turned back to face it, snapping and yarling to keep it penned in place. On the outcrop, Ort’kuar unstowed his cycler, and took aim. Just underneath the creature's neck was the prime place to fire; and so he did, brilliant white hot slug firing from the barrel of the weapon and lancing across the desert, downing the weakened buck upon impact.

Sliding down the dune that rose up to meet the lip of the outcrop, Ort’kuar caught his balance and ran across to the carcass, striking the creature with his Gaderffii stick, he began to set to work on gathering the meat, to lug back to his Bantha.

So focused was he on his work, that he almost didn’t notice the newcomer arriving, only alerted by the deep growl of one of the dogs, and the yap of another.

He spun in the sand, bringing his rifle up to face the newcomer. Slowly rising to his feet, he watched as some twenty meters away a young human staggered toward him, dropping to its knees.

”Blaki kelebi min. the human shouted, his hands never leaving its side. The Tusken snarled behind his mask, a human! He clocked his rifle and peered through the basic sight, spotting that the human was clutching a massive wound on his side. ”Blaki, Minni ghey imukel. it begged again. Ort’kuar moved forward, seeing that the man was unarmed, and with a deft blow, cracked him over the head with the butt of his rifle, knocking him to the ground.

Quickly, he tied the man up, and began to drag him back to his Bantha.

*****

Some time later.

”Glecae nukrajoe?” the human implored, once more in a language Ort’kuar did not understand. He had been back from the hunt for hours now, and the human, tied to a post stuck into the rock, had not stopped carping on in a weird language. He had erected his tent, set a fire, and started cooking a meal for himself, and all the human had done was shout and cry.

He had considered sticking a rag in his mouth, and earlier had gone to try - only drawing back when he was the sigil of one of the local farming communities around its neck. Much better to keep him for ransom, he had figured.

Yet as the hours had passed, something had begun to unsettled him about the human. He was oddly growing redder, his temperature was rising, not falling, as the evening set in. Not caring all that much for the man's wound, he had not taken a closer look at the man's side, unskilled in medicine, it probably would have made little difference if he had.

”Shut up will you?” he snapped in Tusken, marking the first time since finding the man that he had actually spoken a word to him. The man shrunk back, clearly scared by Ort’kuars guttural accent and foriegn tongue. ”Pfffft. Coward.” he added, returning his focus to his meal, as slowly the human's eyes fluttered close.

Finally, some peace and quiet.

Rhax'ra had come home finally after the successful mission to get survivors off Utapau. But there was something that mission had triggered. Her mother's instinct is to go home to her children. Since that mission, there has been nothing but pure worry about her little ones. Are they safe? Getting enough to eat? Healthy or sick? Those type of questions has been plaguing her mind for weeks now. The Tusken took the time to learn to pilot a ship so that she can come back without having to make arrangements with someone else to bring her.

The sight of a Tusken Raider piloting a shuttle must have been a terrifying one to those who never expected to see such a thing. Unless they were among those who saw Rhax'ra leave on board a ship belonging to another sector ranger.

From the landing pad, after paying the owner of the station, Rhax'ra had originally set out on foot to head to her tribe. At some point, her Bantha must have picked up her scent in the wind because while the female Tusken was in the middle of a small and minor sandstorm the Tusken's bantha appeared. After all this time her Bantha can still pick up her scent. Animals sure can be amazing. She had made sure to only have her cycled rifle and gaffe stick so that if she happens to come across any other Tuskens she can just blend right in. To protect herself from other beings that aren't Tusken, Rhax'ra traded her female Tusken robes to dress as a male Tusken knowing that beings will rarely attack a male Tusken. It also gave her more freedom to move quicker.

For two days Rhax'ra traveled on the back of her Bantha heading towards where she knows her tribe will be at. Hopefully, they will welcome her back in without any issues. She had left the planet which is the ultimate in a Tusken can commit. She had to do it though. Her children were starving. By her joining the Sector Rangers she found a way to provide for her four children. In a way, the money she sent back may have provided a way for the tribe to trade for goods needed if regular bartering didn't work.

Spotting a campfire in the distance the Tusken was barely able to make out the shape of a Bantha. Whoever it was is most likely another Tusken Raider. Must be. No other race can survive out here. Well, some can but not this far out in the desert. Getting closer and closer Rhax'ra was able to confirm that it is a Tusken Raider... And a human tied to a post. Maybe this person tried to steal the Bantha. Who knows.

Dismounting from her Bantha when outside the camp but in eyesight of the other Tusken Raider, Rhax'ra spoke in Tusken, "Good evening. I'm traveling to visit my tribe after a long journey. May I rest here for the night? I will be gone by morning if you wish." She mentioned being sure to keep her distance since she isn't sure if this male Tusken is from her tribe or not. Noticing the human again she eyed him cautiously. Her hand naturally reaching for her gaffi stick until she noted him tightly bound to the post. The human won't be able to go on the attack. Not seeing the wound, yet, Rhax'ra figured the human is week from being in the heat for too long.

The yap of one of the Masiffs alerted Ort’kuar to the arrival of another person. He was pleasantly surprised - Tatooine was not normally such a hub of traffic! Standing as the Bantha and its rider approached, he clocked another Tusken, and, slightly, lowered his guard. At least they're not a savage, Ort’kuar mused - knowing that, unlike with the offworlders, a fellow Tusken would at least seek to break bread. "You are welcome to share the fire, and take what food you need." he called back in their native tongue. Spotting she was a female, he gestured for her to sit on the makeshift stool he had fashioned from his bedroll, and took his own place on the sand. "I think," he gestured to her robe, which was cut into the same fashion as his "...we are of the same clan." he added, gesturing to his clan sigil around his neck. "I am heading to the tribe in the morning, taking this human to the Elders." he added specific emphasis on the man's species, to express his disgust.

"I think he is injured." he jabbed at the man with his finger, before offering his guest a bowl of food and placed his rifle down next to him, comfortable that she was not a threat.

As he did so, the human twitched slightly, presumable from some sort of dream. Ort'kuar thought nothing of it.

"We are two days south of the tribe, where I know there to be children of one of our number, who headed west some time ago to seek her mate. I assume that must be you?" he added, not knowing of Rhax'ra true past, and assuming the story spun by the Elders was true. "If you wish it, you may ride with me in the morning. It is not safe for you to travel alone. I to must head back and tell the Elders what I have found." he jerked a thumb to the human "I still do not know why he is injured, a rival tribe, perhaps bandits from the Hutt hurak across the gorge? Either way, it threatens the Kuar."

"Anyway, I am Ort'kuar, and you?" he asked her name, as he warmed his hands over the fire.

Okay Rhax'ra didn't notice the Masiffs that are with the male Tusken Raider. Well at least they didn't go straight for an attack. Showing that they are extremely well trained. The female Tusken Raider replied back, "Thank you very much, Friend." She gently replied. Rhax'ra looked to the makeshift stool he had fashioned with his bedroll. Well, such gentlemanly behavior is certainly one thing she had missed. And note from her new companion. She nodded in 'thank you' and took a seat holding her hands up to the fire to warm them. Looking to Ort'kuar as he spoke up she nodded to silently say he was correct in regards to his assumption they are of the same clan, "You are correct. We are of the same clan." She answered, showing him the clan sigil she had sewn onto the sleeve of her right shoulder. She glanced at the human while she outwardly expressed disgust towards the human she inwardly pitied the man. She guessed what she experienced on Utapau and her own positive experiences with humans is to blame, "Well.. He must see the Elders. It's forbidden for humans to be this close to the tribe. Who knows what dangers he plans to bring." Saying such hate hurt. But she does have to try blending in, "When we reach the tribe. Keep him away from the children. " she added as she watched the male Tusken jab at the human. Injured? Well, no wonder he is acting weak. Between the injury and the heat. No wonder.

She graciously accepted the bowl of food. Hoping that this is not all the food her host had, "Thank you very much. If this is all the food you have we can share." Knowing that food is hard to come across it is the least she can do to thank the other Tusken for allowing her to share the camp and his food. She looked to the fire as her host spoke up again about how far they are from the tribe as well as about children and a Tusken who had left to find her mate. Must be a story the Elders said about her. It has to be or they are talking about a different Tusken. But then as far as Rhax'ra can recall she is the only one who left the tribe, "Yes. I am the Tusken in that story. I left to find my mate. Only to find him killed... By humans." She explained looking to the human in disgust for the first time that was genuine hate, "I.. Because of losing him. You can say I worried about providing for my children. I also left to find food because at the time food was so scarce children in the tribe at the time were dying. I couldn't find anything out west." She explained. It hurt to lie to her fellow Tusken. But she can't tell him the truth. Not yet. If she told him know her host may kill her right there.

She looked back to ort'kuar. He was offering to allow her to travel with him for her safety. It is a nice offer. She didn't want to jump at it though. Who knows if the male Tusken is out here to be alone for a while. So Rhax'ra politely replied with, "If you are alright with me tagging along I will accept your offer.. I don't want to impose on you by joining your journey if you are out here to be alone for a while." Rhax'ra looked to the injured human, "He may have got into a fight with another Tusken tribe.. There are many more dangerous beings here now than there were in the past.. This makes me worry about my children. What dangers are they going to have to face that we didn't while growing up." She said somewhat quietly.

"Pleasure to meet you Ort'kuar. I'm Rhax'ra." She replied. Having eaten some of the food in the bowl she held the bowl out to her companion offering him what is left know that he needs the strength the food will give him for the journey back to the tribe. That and she had her fill and can't eat anymore.

With his guest now settling down for the rest of the evening, Ort'kuar was keen to get to sleep - ushering in the night. He nodded along as she introduced herself, and shared that they were in the same tribe, before finishing her meal. "Rhax'ra, rest - I shall take the first watch, and tomorrow we shall head back in the direction of the camp."

Standing, he moved away to give the Tusken some privacy, he fetched his rifle from the ground and headed to the outcropping ledge upon which the makeshift camp was to be found. With oversight of the tied-up human and the camp behind him, Ort'kuar had a commanding location from which to see the night set in.

*****

When morning came, and the various shifts of watch had been concluded, Ortkuar woke up Rhax'ra, and stowed his weapon on the side of his Bantha. The human was asleep, but, over the course of the night, had grown redder - Ort'kuar assumed he was unaccustomed to the desert climate in which he found himself.

"Let's get going. I'll get our friend up and moving." he said, walking over to the human and jabbing it with his stick.

As it turned out, this was not a good idea. The humans head lolled back, froth bubbling from its mouth, and with a dead-eyed leer, it stared at him. Ort'kuar recoiled - the creature was sick - he thew his sleeve to his mouth as if to ward off the sickness, and staggered back toward his mount.

"Back." he ordered his dogs back, and pointed to the Bantha, instructing them where to go. "What's wrong with it?" he asked Rhax'ra, seeing if she had any insight.

Due to feeling that she had imposed on Ort'Kuar enough. Rhax'ra naturally wanted to take the first watch so that the other Tusken can get some more rest, it was the least Rhax'ra could do to thank the male Tusken for his hospitality. She could have easily taken up doing the first watch without any issues. An outsider may argue that Rhax'ra could have taken the first watch as well but they have no understanding of Tusken society and culture so they would fail to see why Rhax'ra won't argue after being told to rest while Ort'Kuar took the first watch. This is because in Tusken society while the women ran the their settlements and said what is to happen there. It is the men who had say while traveling and raiding since they have the more finely tuned survival instincts. The women have those same instincts and are just as deadly as the men. But since it is usually the men that go out to hunt and raid theirs is more finely tuned than the women. So it was natural, and in a ways expected, for Tusken women to listen to the men while away from the settlements. It is true that it varies between clans. But in their clan it's expected for the women to listen to the men.

"Thank you, Ort'Kuar." Is what she will say instead of arguing with the male Tusken Raider. Watching him leave to give her privacy. Watching him head up the putcropping she unrolled the bed roll then laid down.

When it was her turn during the night to take watch she did so until morning came when Ort'Kuar woke her up for a final time. Nodding Rhax'ra gathered her gaffi stick and rifle she started heading over to her Bantha when the female Tusken heard him order his dogs back before asking what isbwrong with the human. Resting her rifle next to her Bantha, Rhax'ra moved to stand next to Ort'Kuar. Keeping her distance from the human she was shocked. Okay she knew that the human was injured but she had no idea that this human was infected.

Well it is a blessing that the post the human isntied to was a distance from her and the male Tusken. If he wasn't well the two could have become infected, "He's infected!" She exclaimed as she gently but firmly gripped her companion's arm and moved him further away from the human, "I'll explain when we get away from him.. from here. Incase there are more like him who are infected.." Gripping her Gaffi stick she edged closer to the frothing human. When a safe distance she swung the clubbed end of her melee weapon into the human's skull a few times until she was sure the human won't be getting back up. When done she jabbed the club end into the sand to clean off the human's blood from her weapon, "When we get to the rock outcroppings I'll tell you what is going on. We have to keep quiet until we get there." She told him as Rhax'ra made her way to her Bantha. On the way helping gather the male Tusken gsther his belongings.

When finished Rhax'ra grabbed her rifle and climbed onto her Bantha's back. Patiently waiting but was eager to get away from here incase there are more infected heading this way. The rocky outcroppings will provide a safe location for her to explain what is going on. They can get up high where the zombies can't climb to get to them and the two will be able.to see them coming from their vantage point. It was how to explain what is going on without revealing she went offworld that Rhax'ra was going to have to think about on the way to the location.

Shocked at the speed with which his new-found companion struck the human dead, Ort'kuar gathered his possessions. Fortunately, most of them were already stowed on the back of his mount, and so in a matter of moment he was climbing into the saddle, and with a sharp kick into the beast's side, they were underway. The miniature convoy, two mounted banthas and two dogs, they meandered their way through dunes as fast as their beast could carry them.

Ort'kuar kept silent, wondering what had happened, whilst they continued on their way. He had never seen any illness affect someone in such a way before.

For a short while, he followed his companion until they reached their destination. The outcrop was one he had used before. A small sandy space, in which to place bantha, with a steep rocky outcrop accessible by a small climb, which itself looked over the dunes below. It was sheltered from the wind and the ideal place to pitch a tent and light a fire. For the time being this was a close to home as they could get until the situation became clearer.

Below, some twenty meters or so, he could see the bantha, now devoid of their gear.

"What was that?" he turned to his companion, as he knelt to calm one of the dogs.

She knew that how quickly Rhax'ra struck the human down after one look at him had to have been a shock to Ort'Kuar but there was no way that they could have brought the human to the elders. If they had everyone in the settlement would have possibly become infected. Or the two of them infected and bringing the virus to the settlement. These couple days of traveling will in a ways be a way to see if either of them had somehow been infected. Which would be impossible with the two keeping their distance from the infected person.

Their banthas will carry them far away as quickly as they can move. Which is still faster than the two Tuskens can walk across the sands. As the small convoy moved Rhax'ra periodically looked behind them to see if anyone or anything happened to be following them. Perhaps there was only the one infected person out here. But it never hurts to stay alert and keep a look out. Eventually they had reached the rocky outcrop. With the Banthas too sheltered from the wind the two creatures can rest after the long journey to the outcrops.

High up on a decent size ledge up on the cliff face the two set up camp. The female Tusken was going through how to tell her new companion what exactly went on to cause her to just kill that person. When he asked her what he had saw she knew her time to think is up.

Finished getting the second of the two tents up she turned to face Ort'Kuar. Oh how to tell him in a way that will make sense without revealing she had been offworld. She watched him pet one of the two dogs to help it settle down, "That man was infected by a new virus. From what I heard they die but still wonder around as though they are alive. If he bit either of us or we got his saliva on us somehow we would have become like him. Mindless wondering infected zombies." She explained, "That was why I killed him." Rhax'ra added as she added a little more tinder to the fire. Taking a seat on the ground the female Tusken wasn't sure how else to explain it. Though Ort'Kuar may catch on to what she told him theough what she told him.

His eyes narrowed behind his mask at the far-fetched nature of what Rhax'ra was expecting him to believe. Furthermore, how did she even know of this new virus?

He pushed the thoughts to one side. Maybe she had encountered it on another part of Tatooine? After all, she had been away for a long time, surely she had encountered it near one of the human settlements?

Regardless - they had more pressing issues.

"So we ensure it cannot bite us then? Surely, there are more of them - the humans pack together like rodents, it would spread fast in their settlements. The nearest to us," he drew out a makeshift map in the sand with his finger "Is Mos Eisley to the West. Our camp is to the East of us now. We must get back and warn the others, and move the tribe into the mountains."

"Have you seen more on your travels here?"

Rhax’ra nodded, "Yes. We ensure it cannot bite us. That seems to be the way it spreads. Oh they back so close together.. I saw some who's homes were right on top of each other.." She told her companion as she watched him draw a makeshift map in the sand. The female Tusken sorted through her memory of all the settlements she had come across after becoming separated from the tribe and before temporarily leaving Tatooine. Waiting for Ort'Kuar to finish drawing his map her hand momentarily hovered over his map before drawing a couple of X's in the sand, "These are a couple of minor human settlements outside of Mos Eisley. The one closest minor settlement southeast of the tribe is the largest.. when I passed there I counted twenty humans there. The other is a few miles south of it.. about ten humans at that settlement I am not sure if they are still there as there was a Krayt Dragon in that vicinity as well." She mentioned as dhe drew the rough location of the krayt dragon nest next to the second minor human settlement.

The female Tusken shook her head, "No. That is the first infected human I have seen this way.. but with how closely packed together they live to eachother there are most likely more infected humans wondering around with the sand slowing them down." She mentioned, "We could give our banthas a little more time to rest then press on. We do need to warn the elders of this virus and as you said move the tribe into the mountains. The sand and canyons will be a natural barrier and buffer between us and the infected." Rhax'ra handed Ort'Kuar her canteen of water for him to have some the two will need to keep their strength up, "What I had learned about these zombies is that they react to noise.. the more noise made the more that are drawn in. Which is why I said for us to move quietly. If there were more of these infected humans nearby me explaining on the way here may have drawn them to us." She finished her explanation with that. The Tusken delved back into her memory to think on if there is anything else she needs to mention. She can't quite recall right now though.

He studied the man, taking into account the possibility the nearby humans had fallen prey to the virus, as he worked out a route back to the tribe. Sketching a rough route around the settlements to the south, Ort'kuar spoke "We avoid the settlements then, and push onto the hard rock north of the dunes, to avoid alerting the dragon to our movements."

He took the canteen, thanking Rhax'ra, and continued "We must move quickly and quietly."

Ort'kuar stood, turning to face over the dunes, seeing only the silent stillness of Tatooine. Nothing moved across the dune - it was the ideal location to see if any others of their newfound foes came for them in the night. With that, he turned in.

Rhax’ra tilted her head some as she listened while her companion came up with a new route and action plan for them to follow. Which is natural for a Tusken man to be able to do considering the different lifestyle they live from the women. She nodded in agreement, "We should keep our Tuskens at a steady pace until it is time to move faster since even though ours are.. special for moving fast, so that they have the endurance to mlve faster past these settlements as well as the dragon." She noted. She welcomed him in response to his thank you for the canteen with a nod.

Watching him stand, Rhax’ra looked back to the small fire for a moment lr two as Ort'Kuar turned in for the night. They are up high on a cliff face that the infected shouldn't be able to climb. That is why she recommended for them to stop here. The both of them can rest and get the strength they need for the journey tomorrow. But to be sure that they won't be ambushed during the night the female Tusken stayed up for a little bit longer before heading into her own tent to get some sleep.

The next morning Rhax’ra was up early, some time before the twin suns began to rise. As far as she could tell there was nothing out of the ordinary as she looked out. No infected had discovered their camp while the two slept.

They are in a ways experiencing the calm before the storm will begin though. A very long storm to be exact.

Glancing over to Ort'Kuars' tent the female Tusken looked back out to the rocky, sandy landscape to watch for any movement among the landscape.
