DESCRIPTION​

Originally produced for the Tapani sector's local defense forces—defending planets such as Fondor, Tapani itself, and Procopia—the New Republic government struck a deal with the Tapani Starship Cooperative to produce additional units explicitly for the New Republic Navy, adding a much needed starfighter carrier to a navy increasingly concerned with projecting power through starfighter dominance.

The Tapani-class carrier is designed to deliver X-83 TwinTail starfighters into the heat of a space combat arena. It possess a long flat dorsal surface that could store twenty of these New Republic X-wings, which are attached via their magnetic docking clamps. The right and left sides of the carrier could accommodate an additional ten X-wings each for a total of forty. The tower erected towards the aft of the ship contained service bays to preform starship maintenance in addition to the command bridge.

The Tapani carrier is faster than many other carriers on the market with acceptable maneuvering capabilities. This is owed to the light armoring of its hull, though the ship boasts heavy deflector shield generators that offer it protection others of its class do not possess. Likewise, it had a relatively small armament consisting of six tower-mounted heavy turbolaser batteries and ten ion cannon emplacements mounted on the carrier's belly. As a result, they are typically escorted by other vessels, such as the New Republic's EF77 Nebulon-D frigates.

LEGALITY​

Restricted. Tapani-class carriers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons, making them difficult or impossible for civilians and even small factions to own. To date, however, this has been a non-issue, as they are exclusively sold to the New Republic Navy by their manufacturer.

INTENT​

To bring a cool Legends ship into site canon and give the New Republic a much needed starfighter carrier.

RESTRICTIONS​

Tapani-class carriers are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They are currently exclusive to the New Republic faction.
