Once again her father had called upon her to be his daughter, put on the show of being the perfect family, at least they would be alcohol and it was for a good cause at least even if was just a publicity stunt of her fathers.

a charity ball for the funding of research for a vaccine or cure for the AMS virus that was currently spreading across the galaxy. She couldn’t argue against and her father knew that and if she didn’t turn up people would talk and they both wouldn’t like that.

She signed and took a sip of her champagne, standing in a green dress with an Iridescent gold pattern across the surface. The guests were beginning to arrive, her father and mother greeting a few of them at the door while she hung in the back watching from a distance, scanning for any interesting attendees amongst the regulars of high society.

Before he'd wound up... where he was, arriving at one of these had been a plan of his at one point. It would've been simple; arrive at a public gathering of core world bigwigs, talk them up and down to get any and all available information, and maybe help a few people lose three or four hundred credits.

It felt like that was what he was here to do, but to be perfectly honest, after everything... he just wanted to talk to some more people.

The drinks were sweet and not at all as hard as Laeonas was used to, but that didn't stop him from gulping down one, two, three, or ten glasses of whichever wine he'd been recommended by one of the waiting droids.

Besides the pair of earrings he wore, emerald and shining, the boy's outfit was almost pedestrian in comparison to many of the other guests. Some wore outfits that looked as if they belonged to royalty, others more scantly clad, but laced with gold.

He was wearing the best a single crate of mid-grade spice he'd managed to get his hands on could sell for; the black overgarments he wore cost him four figures on their own, and the overexpensive military grade combat boots his calloused feet were nestled in were about four hundred and thirty.

Despite all this, Laeonas managed to fit in well enough to appear, more or less, that he was trying to be humble. Standing in a corner, sipping on some expensive booze, he managed to smile or nod at people who passed him without looking totally out of place. Maybe he could pass off the black as "mourning the victims of the plague" or something or other.

In truth, it matched his hair.

Balls. Mal had two. He had been to two, too. Or was it three? “Was it three?”

“Three?”

His sidekick asked after he asked.

“Yeah, three balls or two?”

Katie blinked. “...You mean...do you have two balls or three..?”

“What?” Mal blinked back. “No… I mean, is this my third ball or my second?”

“I…” The lady in pink appeared to have no answer. “...I no longer know what question I’m answering…”

Moving on, the pair parted ways. Katie spotted a buffet. Mal spotted a corner. Specifically, a man standing in it with what could only be overly expensive military grade combat boots amid a mourner’s outfit. It was a mite black but, then again, not exactly out of place.

“Hi,” Mal greeted simply, stepping up after stealing a glass of champagne from a server’s platter. He sipped the bubbly, though it didn’t sit well on his lips—not as sweet as he would have hoped. “How are your balls?” He excused himself with a clearing of the throat. “I mean, how are you enjoying the ball?”

Charity balls needed people to staff them. That was her 'in.' One of the staff had become 'unwell' and couldn't run their shift. Luckily enough, they found someone to cover it for them.

It wasn't Eveline's natural habitat. Too many rich people. Too much patting themselves on the back. Too much braying. Too much smugness. The waitress uniform wasn't helping things either. Tight, dark trousers and a plain blouse. She'd even had to wear her hair down, which was hitherto unheard of. She looked like a completely different person.

That's the point. If any of these tools know anything about AMS, I need to hear it.

As she moved through the crowd, she held aloft a tray of glasses, holding bubbling champagne. A fixed, unnatural smile on her face that she was struggling to hold. Little snippets of conversation filtering in and out of her head as she waited to hear it. Hear anything.

And, if I need to, there's a blaster smuggled in with the drinks. Security had meant no bow. No knives or blades either. She could always garrote someone with her tie. Never knew what the point of them was anyway.

"Sir, madam? Drink?" she asked through her fake smile, her accent utterly implacable. "Drink? Sir, champagne?" She approached a couple of men who seemed thick in conversation.

"Drink, sirs? Sorry to interrupt."

Jania eyes scanned the attendees now dispersing across the hall, two persons caught her interest she hadn’t seen them before and she thought she knew everyone coming tonight it was a pleasant surprise and gave her an excuse to ignore some other guests like Maree, she couldn’t stand that Schutta.

Downing the rest of her glass of champagne, she placed it on the tray of a nearby server before picking up a new and approaching the two gentlemen.

"Evening gentlemen" her voice spoke out "I hope I'm not interrupting anything, the names Jania."

Laeonas had seen an approaching waitress, and the wandering figures of the ball room. He wasn't bored-- yet. There were drinks, and he enjoyed looking at the people, either because their clothes were very, very nice looking, or they were.

It still wasn't much, and he wasn't entirely sure if he wanted to start talking to all these people who'd probably spit on him if they found out his actual background, but it didn't look like he had much of a choice.

A pair of individuals, both humans, approached him. They looked... older. One was a woman in a puffed out, massive pink dress, and the other was a man with brown hair who was barely taller than him, but he compensated with the boots he wore.

"ahem," he'd begin, clearing his throat to get ready for whatever it was they were about to start talking about. Gently, he sipped a bit of champagne, trying to appear as stereotypically posh as he possibly could.

Than Laeonas heard the first words out of his mouth.

His eyes lit up, widening like orbs as he processed the information. He started to process any possible response, flabbergasted at what he heard...

...and than the champagne went down the wrong windpipe.

He held onto the glass for a split second, but as a waitress appeared to walk over, oblivious to the situation, it dropped and shattered.

Desperately trying to either get the drink down or spit it out, Laeo flailed out an arm at the tray, grabbing one of the glasses and downing it-- but it only added to the problem.

A Zabrak female, apparently thinking the two men and singular woman were simply trying to have a conversation, began to approach what was about to become a chaotic affair.

Spontaneously, he spat-- and the alcohol sprayed across the waitress' tray, and everything else.

Laeonas didn't have time to apologize, as by now he was keeled over, coughing a lung out as he choked.

On the whole, they'd both set first impressions of around equal quality.

Whatever the answer to Mal's question about enjoying the ball or balls, an interruption just caught him off guard, though it was a welcome one. After all, this was a shindig, wasn’ it? It was only prim, prime and proper to have your conversation interrupted as you mingled from one to another. Of course, Mal did not quite know how to converse or mingle or if he could get more than a mite of a mingle and a bite of a conversation with a waitress but, well, this was one starship captain who was never scared to dare

“Sure,” he answered her with a smile. “Don’t mind if I do!” He accepted the glass of champagne. Now he had two glasses of champagne. He sipped the first—still a little bitter, not much better—then downed it. “And a return gift!” Sets the empty glass on the serving tray.

“Oh, and uh...” Mal cleared his throat. “Do you happen to know where the restroom—" At the same time as the crash of glass and one Jania waltzing up to introduce herself, Mal just then noticed the man beside him erupting into a coughing fit. He blinked. Unfortunately, he did not know CPR. Maybe his counterparts did?
