Description: This meter-long sword is actually derived from lightsaber technology in much the same way lightfoils are, though the designers sought to evade the lightfoil's weakness. This led them to develop certain novel approaches, and the end result bears only a passing resemblance to the original specifications. It has many of a lightsaber's advantages, though it lacks certain of the lightsaber's utilities due to the nature of the weapon and has a much shorter battery life. The weapon balances this out with being purely technological; construction requires no Force powers.
The blade itself is a crystalline emitter, a single lab-grown Corusca gem with a monofilament edge surrounding a frame housing the electronics and power sources. The Corusca gem blade is easily the most expensive part of the weapon, as not only must it be grown in extreme conditions but it must be utterly flawless - unlike natural Corusca gems, the blade cannot stand shatterpoints in its structure. Should it have even the slightest weakness or flaw, the weapon would explode in a shower of pricey fragments when activated. Because of this, the gem must be grown precisely in shape and cannot be altered even slightly once completed; cutting it is completely out of the question, as it lacks the shatterpoints and shear planes of a naturally occurring crystal. The blade is resistant to lightsabers even while uncharged.
The ultrachrome-plated frame of the blade is lined with diatium power cells, sixteen in all. The weapon lacks the efficiency of a lightsaber, and requires significantly more energy to function. The blade 'charges' with what amounts to an energy blade somewhat akin to the predecessors of the lightsaber, destructive energy that fills the crystalline structure of the gem blade and discharges whenever the cutting edges of the blade make contact with something substantial. The power cells are good for about four hours of combat before they must be recharged. The side of the blade frame pops open at the press of a switch on the handle to reveal the rack of power cells, which must be individually charged in a specialized charging station. Fortunately, the charging station (a box about a foot long, three inches tall, and five inches wide) can plug into most standard power sources, including the Sunrise armor's own fusion generator.
Even when not charged, the blade is quite sharp and lethal against soft targets. It is so sharp, in fact, that the blade cuts too finely for most nervous systems to immediately detect the damage. However, it is less useful against armored targets as the blade (though monofilament and nearly unbreakably strong) can only penetrate so far before it gets wedged in place due to the thickness of it getting stuck in, say, armor. The limitation is similar to that of an axe trying to chop through wood. The laser charging eliminates this handicap, burning and boiling away the hindering material and helping the blade cut in much the same way as the shaped charge of an anti-armor round helps break through armor.
