Alex did not brood. She was too old and too respectable to adopt such a sour mood. However, if she did brood it would look shockingly similar to the pacing, she did on New Alderaan. The Morellian Jedi was far from the Capital City. She had waded her way deep into one of the larger forests covering the planet. She stood in a small clearing with her gaze focused upward. She was waiting. Waiting for her apprentice. Alex had tried to use this time to calm her fraying nerves, but they were in an impossible situation. The President asked for impossibilities. Years ago, she had hunted a Dark Side cult all through New Alderaan. They had disappeared when Yavain and her came too close. Apparently, they had returned in rather dramatic fashion. The Presidents own daughter taken into the forest. Alex managed to track them here before the trail went cold.

Now, she was brining a child into certain danger. Why? Because the Force hammered her over and over that Maura could be different. The child was special despite her odd behavior which Alex found strangely enduring. She listened to the Force and prayed she would not regret it. Maura was her responsibility. She would rather die than see anything happen to that child. Hopefully, this would all be far less dramatic than she thought.

The roar of shuttle engines hit her ears. Alex quickly sealed herself off in the Force. There was no need to let Maura feel her anxiety. She was the Grandmaster…nothing would happen to the girl. She would make sure of that. Plus, the shuttle would stay here and send help if there was trouble. Alex was not so foolish as to not cover all her bases. That would be reckless.

Maura did not brood. In fact, Maura didn't even know what the word "brood" meant, and she'd probably call anyone she saw brooding a grumpy pants for bringing down the mood. The mood was, according to the child, a mixture of excitement for adventure and the absolute elation on being given a lightsaber, if only temporary.

"Padawan Starwalk reporting for duty!" Maura loudly announced herself as if the roar of the shuttle hadn't already, then leap from the open door five feet down onto the ground. Her eyes were sparkling with a childlike zest for adventure, and she seemed totally and completely oblivious to Alex's anxiety and her seriousness.

"Sooooo what are we doing?"

Also, to her credit, the child was dressed appropriately for the mission ahead. Her wild mane was even tied back behind her head, though the blue cap she loved so much was still being worn.

Padawan Starwalk reporting for duty…the cry echoed in the forest as Maura vaulted down. A few seconds later, the shuttle would spin and head for the upper atmosphere. They would remain close but not in sight. Alex took a deep breath. Maura was dress for the mission and the Morellian Jedi could sense the kyber crystal ringing in the loaner lightsaber. She could only hope Maura wielded the weapon well. She needed to explain the mission but how? “The Sith are not the only ones who use the Darkside. Throughout history, and even now, there have been others.” Alex bent down to get a better look into Maura’s face.

“I hope I am not asking too much of you, young one. Years ago, a dark side cult took root on New Alderaan. They corrupted the capital cities governor and worked horrible deeds. We stopped them.” Only Sevrin was left from those days. Yavain…lost…Max…gone. It broke her heart. “The President fears they have returned. Signs from the old days have appeared again.” Signs she was not ready to admit were real. “He has asked for our help and in exchange New Alderaan will help field our naval forces.” Alex stood and gestured all around them. “Intelligence suggests they are in this forest…somewhere.” The feeling creeping up her spine confirmed that.

“We need to get moving.” Alex wrapped them in the Force and headed for the tree line. “You are with me, Maura. You are safe but you must listen to everything I say without question. No matter what happens I will be fine.” She would see nothing happen to the young colorful Jedi. Alex’s life would be given before that could happen.

Maura listened attentively, her ears perked up to show for it, though her eyes slowly narrowed to a squint as her master continued to speak.

"Sooo we're looking for old evil not-Sith in the woods?" Her eyes rapidly expanded wide open, and an excited cry followed her summary. "That sounds so cool!"

The not-Sith - the Others - reminded her of a scary movie she'd watched as a (younger) kid where a bunch of teens got haunted while lost out in the woods. "Master Voran and I aren't teens...so we're the perfect match for this evil!"

As for Alex's condition... "I promise to listen to everything you say! Pinkie promise!" Maura closed the distance between them with her pinkie held out so that Alex could secure the pinkie promise. Once the promise was made - and Maura would insist upon it - she'd start bouncing up and down from the balls of her feet to her toes.

"So, how do we find the Others? Do we have to find them through the Force?"

She looked down at the outstretched pinky. Raising an eyebrow, she linked fingers. “Pinkie promise.” The Force slowly extended out from her. A bubble surrounding Maura and Alex. Their footfalls suddenly softened as the planet life parted for them to pass. The less rustling around the better. “Searching the Force is easiest, but I cannot do it alone and it carries a risk.” Her powers were considerable but humming through the Force alone would still taken considerable time. Time they likely did not have. “If we find the Others in the Force, if we are not careful, they can sense us as well.” Alex stopped walking and took a deep breath.

“We must shield our minds while we look.” She stuck out her hand. “Take my hand and close your eyes.” When Maura took her hand, Alex’s mind would reach out…zooming across the Force. Gently, she lifted Maura’s sense with her. “Follow your instincts…search for what feels wrong.” The Morellian Jedi was careful to keep both their minds shielded. She had no inkling of what they faced. What she knew for certain was the danger was real.

Her mind plunged into the Force, her senses swept over the large forest. What was see looking for? Something off something Dark. Alex felt a pull. A whirlpool of other yanking her senses. There that was it. Her mind swung and she began to focus on that strange feeling.

Maura listened and took Alex's hand, surfing along with the Grandmaster in the Force and doing her best to contain her newfound awe. "This is. So. Cool." Though they were headed into what Alex said was going to be a dangerous situation, Maura couldn't stop herself from getting excited about the way she felt surrounded by the Force at that moment.

Once the girl got over her excitement, she gently closed her eyes and began to reach out, both literally and figuratively. The child's hand stretched out in front of her, mimicking her movements in the Force in some subtle way. Alex said to search for something wrong, which was really broad, but they were surrounded by life in the forest, so Maura decided to focus on that. Life felt light but full of and robust with energy. It filled her senses with phantom colors and flavors, so she felt out for anything that lacked that. After all, Maura had never encountered the Dark Side.

When Alex latched on to something other, only then did Maura notice as well. Using her master's connection as a guide, Maura zeroed in on the feeling of otherness until she felt a shiver run down her spine. Her hand closed into a fist, and her eyes stretched wide open. A feeling much like the shock of diving into frigid water rushed through her, and she immediately looked up to the woman beside her to see if she had a reaction as well.

"Was that the Others?" she asked, her voice much lowered in volume than before.

Alex could feel Maura riding the waves of the Force. She smiled. The girl was talented. The Morellian Jedi kept them carefully shielded while her mind focused on gathering strangeness. She worked her way closer…careful to no overextend. What was that feeling. She knew the touch of the Sith too well…she knew that particular taint. Even the strange magical stylings of Andruil were familiar to Alex. This was something else. Something she could not place. It was that same eerie feeling as before. Alex’s mind drifted closer. Her concern was growing but in this realm her power was undeniable. They were safe.

Until they weren’t.

A shock ripped through Alex’s chest. Something…someone…looked at them. Her mind was suddenly seen bare. In a flurry she retreated inside herself, dragging Maura with her. Mental walls slammed high. She quickly extended them to her young Padawan. Shit.” The word came unbidden to her lips. “Don’t repeat that.” An ethereal howl pierced the quiet tranquility of the forest. Thunder oddly cracking in the distance.

“We need to move.” Wrongness hammered against her senses in the Force. Run it screamed in her mind over and over. Alex could outrun nearly anything. She would not risk Maura being left behind. There were no good options but staying was out of the question. Alex squatted down. The Force pouring into the muscles in her legs and back. “Climb on.” Her gaze flicked to Maura. “Now, Maura.” The moment the girl would climb on, Alex would pool the Force beneath them. “Hold on tight.” Assuming Maura latched on, Alex was vault them into the upper branches of the trees. Another howl sounded behind them. She flew through the forest, the Force urging her onward. Her padawan clinging to her back.

"Why-" Before Maura could finish, Alex crouched down and commanded Maura to get on. Something about the seriousness and urgency of her voice compelled the kid not to resist, so she climbed on without a word and placed her hands firmly on Alex's shoulders.

Thanks to her master's Force-fueled gait, the two of them sped out of there in no time. The kid's colorful hair flew out behind her, and she ended up having to hold her hat in her teeth to keep it from flying away. There was a sense of unease in the air - partially from the vibes her master was giving off, and partially from the unshakeable feeling they were being watched.

"I tink we're veing vwatched," Maura said through clamped teeth. Her ear twitched at the sound of a cracked twig, though it was gone within seconds at their pace. "Where are we going?"

“We are.” Alex’s voice was quiet but undeniably serious. She worked the Force while she ran. Their bodies melded with the color of the forest. Slowly, becoming harder and harder to see. The feeling never left her. Foolish girl, she thought to herself. You were not careful. They eyed Alex in the Force. Where were they going. She was aiming to circle them around the cluster of Darkness…attack from a different angle. Alex slowed but stayed in the trees. “I was not careful.” She shook her head in frustration.

“I let them see me in the Force…they’re tracking us now.” She had committed a truly cardinal sin. One of the Jedi or eras past. Arrogance. “I’ve put you in danger Maura…and the only way out is to put you in greater danger.” She slowly lifted Maura in the Force and set her down on the branch. “That Darkness we felt is about a mile to our west.” Alex’s lightsaber snapped into her hand.

“We have to go through it.” Her knuckles turned white from her grip. “Have your saber ready but leave everything else to me.” She had been so foolish. She was the Grandmaster how could anything go wrong…idiot. “Listen close. We do not take lives and we save all those we can. Understood?” Her eyes met Maura’s again. “I need to hear you say yes.”

They weren't careful? They were being tracked? They were in danger?

Alex used words like "we" and "I", but Maura thought only of the two of them. She felt a little guilty and a little scared, but put on a brave face as Alex floated her up to a tree branch out of arm's length. Two clawed hands reached out and gripped the woody stem, pulling herself up and keeping her stable as she perched on the tree and looked down at her master.

"It's ok, master! I'm very brave!" Maura assured her before the woman began again. For once, it was immediately obvious that the girl was listening. She might see it in the child's ears in the way they angled ever-so-slightly down and twitched just a bit now and then.

"Don't take lives. Save everybody. Okay. Yeah." Maura nodded enthusiastically, then unclipped the lightsaber from her belt and held it against the branch below her in one of her hands. Her heartbeat was racing - thump thump thump - in anticipation of the upcoming situation her master seemed to be implying. She was nervous, but a little part of her was excited. Maura was a child with little understanding of her own mortality. To get to see her master fight and perhaps even fight too... it was not unwelcomed.

Her ear twitched again at the sound of leaves crunching underfoot not all that far away.

Alex could sense the fear in her young student. Maura was brave. Foolish…but brave. It reminded Alex of another life. The Morellian Jedi took a steadying breath. She jumped from the trees, lifting Maura with her. They landed gracefully on the forest floor. She could feel the darkness building. They were waiting. Good. The grip on her saber tightened as they walked. Yes…they were waiting. The pair of Jedi walked into a clearing. A dozen sets of eyes turned towards them. Hooded figures standing in a various ominous looking circle. Classic spooky bad guy black robes and one white robed figure in the middle. Bodies lay sprinkled on the ground. She frowned.

Dead villagers. The white robed figure spoke. “Ah…Grandmaster…we have been waiting.” The voice was eerily familiar. “And you brought your little pet.” Who was it? It struck her suddenly like an anvil. “Governor.” Her frown deepened. “You’re dead.” A sharp laugh cracked. “You and that little green monster did your best but alas, I live.” He stepped forward. “And all it took to get you here was a few missing townsfolk. So predictable.” Alex’s lightsaber sprang to life. The white blade snapping.

“You can’t beat me.” That laugh again. “Maybe not. But we can wound you.” Blaster fire began to pour from the black robed men and woman. Their focus clear. Maura. Alex stepped in front, her blade a whirlwind. She grimaced.

Maura was put on the tree branch, and then suddenly she was taken from it again. "Where are we going now?" she wanted to ask, but she was put off by the uneasiness Alex seemed to radiate again. They walked for a bit, Maura still clinging onto her back like a baby marsupial with one hand curled around Alex's shoulder and the other gripping the saber she'd been lent.

It wasn't long before they found the presence they were searching for. Men and women who were hidden under dark robes appeared before them, and one of them began to speak with Alex. He was taunting her it seemed, and called her a pet.

"I'm not a pet, I'm her apprentice!" Maura protested, sticking her tongue out at the voice as she did. He seemed to have ignored her, which frustrated her immediately.

She dropped down off Alex's back as the grandmaster activated her saber, but kept close and a brave face when the blaster fire began. She was their target. It was kind of scary, but Alex's twirling lightsaber kept any of the bolts from reaching her. Was there a way she could help?

The padawan reached out her arms and with the Force, aimed to grip onto the shoulders of one of the hooded figures, then jerked her arms to the side. This caused the figure to be thrown into the figure next to them, toppling both of them over and eliminating some of the incoming blaster fire.

Alex’s face was a mark of determination. The white blade of her lightsaber sweeping back and forth to spend bolts hurtling away. They would not harm Maura. Her mind reached the young girl. “Stay behind me.” There were too many of them. Alone, Alex would have been fine but worrying about her apprentice made this far more difficult. A bead of sweat threatened to appear on her forehead. The Morellian Jedi dove deeper into the Force. She senses Maura reach out and yank on two of the robed figures. Alex smiled, nodding at her young Padawan. She began to hammer the bolts back towards the figures, striking a few down into the dirt. An angry cry erupted from the Governor.

“Enough of this!” The blaster fire stopped. “Why won’t you just die.” A shift in the Force sent a shiver up her spine. What was that? Alex took a protective step backward. Her arm moving out to shield Maura. The Governor shot a hand in the air. A terrible crack sounding. Oh god. Life flowed from the living cultists, their very souls leaving their body. Through ways Alex did not understand the Governor changed. The robes ripped and shredded as he nearly doubled in size. His skin taking on a terrible black hue. He looked at them with awful orange eyes…the Force practically bouncing from him. “Now you will.”

The beast ran towards them. Alex clipped her saber to her belt. She poured the Force into every inch of her body. Her muscles groaning as the energy buzzed within. The Grandmaster hurled herself at the charging beast. Her outstretched fist landing in his chest. The forest rang with a crack as her fist made contact. Suddenly, Alex and the Governor were on the ground with fists flailing. She raised her voice. “Maura…reach for the ship…ask for help.” Her words came out into between grunts.

Maura watched in horror as the cultists around them dropped one by one, left lifeless not by their own reflected bolts, but the doing of their leader. Her eyes widened to saucers as the man seeping with hatred for her master began to twist, contort, and grow in size.

Alex and the beast man began to tussle, and Maura stood still and completely at a loss of what to do. Reach the ship, her master had shouted. Ask for help! She didn't want to run; she wanted to help! But the promise she'd made earlier to listen to everything Alex said reentered her mind. It was enough to motivate her to get moving.

"I'll get help, master!" The padawan pulled the Force into her body, much she like had before when she'd run about and away from Laeonas (@Tom). That hadn't ended too well, but she was determined to not run into anything this time. Just before she dashed off, the girl sent a worried look at Alex as she wrestled the abomination. "I believe in you!" Hoping her words of encouragement would help, Maura sped off in a blur of color.

Alex was dimly aware of Maura speeding off. She heaved a sigh of relief. Her odd little student was mischievous but undeniably talented. As long as Maura stayed on task, everything would be fine. At least she was out of trouble. Alex and the corrupted Governor were a pile of tumbling limbs on the forest floor. He was easily twice her size…maybe more. The Morellian only held her own through sheer strength in the Force.

Her body enhanced by the Light. It was not a state she could hold forever. With a heavy push, she vaulted herself into the air, soaring away from the dark creature. The Governor seemed more beast than man now. He heaved with exertion, his eye bulging with flaring nostrils. The Force began to build within her.

Her body groaned slightly. She had a fun new collection of bruises strewn across her ribs. The creature hit hard. Alex extended her hands to the sides. “I don’t know what you’ve done…but it stops here.” The Governor simply roared and charged. Alex knelt and plunged her hands in the dirt. The Forest responded to her command. Roots and vines bursting from the ground to grab at the Governor. Thick forest trees leaned forward to reach for the beast. Alex trained to hold him as the artificially enhanced man strained against the growing bonds. Her mind reached for Maura. “Quickly, dear.” She could hold the Governor but not for much longer.

"Reach the ship. Ask for help." Maura repeated this mantra as she ran, using the Force to keep herself going even though her muscles grew tired after a bit. "What help? Is there time for help?"

It took a bit for the scrawny kid to get back, and by the time she did, she was breathing heavily and gasping for air. Her hand slammed into the ship to open the ramp, and she then proceeded to fast walk inside.

"Help... where is the comms button?" Maura frantically searched the control panel for a bit, but her eyes finally settled on the right area. "There!"

"Hello? Hello! This is Maura! Um, Master Voran is in trouble! We're on New Alderaan. Um, the governor got really big and there were weird cult people and please come help I gotta go!"

With that, the padawan jumped into the pilot's seat and grabbed the steering. She technically knew how to fly a ship, but she'd never actually done it before. It wasn't going to stop her from trying, and luckily the girl was able to get the ship off the ground and flying in the direction of her master.

Landing would be a different issue, but she just wanted to get back to her master first.

The Force bristled around Alex. Her connection soaring with the full breadth of her power. The forest was alive. Her ally in keeping the Governor restrained. He struggled mightily against his bonds. Despite all her strength, all her knowledge, it took most of her focus to keep him caged. What was she going to do? She was failing to subdue him…she could not let him free. The Governor was not a Sith. That much was clear, but he was a creature of the Darkside. She could not deny the pain in her gut. The unmistakable oil of Darkness. Think Alex. No easy solution came.

The roar of shuttle engines sent her mind into overdrive. She wouldn’t kill him. She should…she knew that…but had she not told Maura they would not take lives. Not today. Instead, Alex tightened the vines around the Governor’s neck. Slowly…slowly…she pressed harder. The shuttle appeared overhead. A smile appearing on her face. The Governor gave a great roar of frustration, but Alex remained calm. She could see the lights of consciousness dimming in his eyes. Her mind flicked to Maura again. “Open the landing ramp…stay high.” The landing ramp lowered, and the Governor’s eyes rolled back into his skull.

Alex jumped.

She soared through the air to land with a heavy thump in the shuttle. Her coms flicked on. “Target our location. The beast should be out for some time. Take him to Yavin. I’ll decide what to do from there.” Her fist slapped the closing button. Alex sunk down in the bay, her breath ragged with the effort. She shouted up to Maura. “Good work. Now get us the kriff out of here.” Her young apprentice had been impressive. Far beyond what Alex had ever expected.

"Oh no... what button is that?" Maura began frantically searching for the landing ramp button after her master sent her thoughts Maura's way. The padawan was thankful, at least, that she didn't have to land the ship. She tried to think back to when they'd landed on the planet.. but...

"Oh, that one!"

Maura slammed her hand into the button, and after a moment, the ship's landing ramp began to lower and extend out. The girl focused on slowing the ship down until it was almost hovering in the air. Alex wouldn't have a fun time trying to leap onto a speeding ship, the girl worried.

Relief flooded Maura when she felt Alex land on the ship. Tears began to well up in her eyes, not because she was sad, but just because the stress of the whole situation was just now starting to hit her. She did her best to wipe them away before her master saw, and at her command, the girl pulled the steering straight back to bring them higher up into the atmosphere.

"Oops," she giggled to herself after quickly realizing that was far too sharp of an ascent. Once they were at a more gentle incline, she casually pressed the autopilot button and then made her way back into the bay where Alex was recovering.

"I'm glad you're okay," she mumbled before throwing her arms around the woman and hugging her tightly around the midrift. "That was scary."

Alex’s eyes snapped open in surprise as she slid down bay. Her arm snapping out to grab a strap. Thankfully, Maura leveled the shuttle out shortly after. She breathed a sigh of relief. She knew the Governor would be taken to Yavin. From there, Alex would have him turned over to the Justiciars. They would discover the truth behind his strange cult and if they failed, he would mee the Shadows. Ifrane had a way of reveling hidden secrets. The Morellian Jedi leaned her head back against the durasteel wall. Her eyes fluttering shut for a moment.

A moment that did not last very long when Maura came rushing back to wrap her in a hug. Alex embraced her young student and held her close for a moment. She untangled her arms from the Padawan and bent down at eye level. Her hands moving to gently brush the tears brimming in Maura’s eyes. “It was scary, but you very brave.” She smiled broadly. “And it’s okay to be afraid. I was afraid but I knew we were together, so it gave me strength.” She nodded slowly. “Being brave is not about never feeling fear. It’s about facing that fear and not letting it control us...I’m proud of you Maura and you should be proud of yourself.” Alex stood. Her knees cracking as she did so. Oof, she was getting old.

“Now let’s go home. I need a nap.” A mischievous grin bloomed across her face. The Grandmaster walking slowly to the cockpit. She sat down heavily and plotted the course for Yavin. She really was tired.

Maura sniffled, then nodded as Alex spoke. She was still feeling a bit in some way, but it helped to hear the woman was proud of her.

"Being brave is about facing your fears," she repeated in her head.

Alex stood up and declared she needed a nap, and at the mention of said nap, exhaustion hit the padawan like a truck. "Yeah...I'm sleepy too..." she admitted with a yawn. While Alex went up to plot the course, Maura curled up on one of the bay benches and nodded off.

/ End Thread.
