So I finished issue 4. Am I missing something or was that person with the voice activated blaster a new character?

That was a new character.

I'm wondering if that's "the bounty hunter we ran into on Ord Mantell."

That is definitely a good assumption. Never would have thought of that.

Yeah, that is one way to put that. Damn...

I like how Issue 5 and 6 made Boba Fett a total badass though, and he takes a loss like a boss.

Still, big freaking thing this. Hell of an ending as well.

Wait, they seriously named her Sana Solo? *facepalms*

First Han Solo, which is Norwegian for "Him Solo", and now Sana Solo... Sanasol is a big healthcare drink over here, almost pure vitamin C drink, made from orange juice.

I'm sure George and the writers had Norwegian on their minds when they did these.

Soooooooooooo Sana Solo. That's pretty ****ing huge.

"Oh man, remember that time Sana showed up in Episode VI and like totally murdered that guy?!"

No? Oh, that's right because she's a side character they jammed into these interquel comics. See, I don't see how she is any more special than the previously canon Legends paramore that Han had. Sure, she now has wife tacked on, but to me that's not that big of deal. Especially considering they most likely married young or for some other purpose (shotgun wedding, marriage of convenience, he/she duped the other into marriage, etc.), but ultimately Han broke it off or moved on. Hell, I EXPECT it from a character like Han Solo. Han clearly didn't care about it enough to mention it before and she doesn't, obviously, show up again in the movies unless they plan to jam her into the new trilogy for some reason.

Ultimately, to me it's them introducing a side character that will inevitably be overshadowed by the original cast if they plan to continue this comic line (it was like six issues planned right?). Now if we had a comic that had followed the character Sana and then we got to an issue where Han shows up and she reveals they had been married. That would have been better for a character who we'd already been following and presumably would have had more depth up to this issue. Now she's just "Han's ex-wife" who can maybe swoops back in if they have Han and Leia not work out.

The six issues was just the first arc, Skywalker Strikes, but this comic is going to go on for a good long while. There's already solicitations out for Star Wars 9, for example.

That said, I am interested in where this character could go. It's an interesting wrinkle in Han's story, since he was a total asshole so we have to wonder, why and how did he get married? I saw one theory that I particularly like, about what Sana's maiden name could have been: Sana Calrissian.

Normally I am loathe to go along with anything that might play into what fans often do, which is to say that a new black character has to be related to another black character in Star Wars (up to and including the completely racist introduction of Haruun Kal in the EU), but I think Sana being a Calrissian could add a nice new dimension onto The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Lines such as "You got a lot of guts coming here, after what you pulled" would take on a new meaning.

In a lot of ways, adding a new angle onto The Empire Strikes Back seems to be what this main line Star Wars comic is doing, particularly with Luke's story. So I could see that happening. Plus, ever since the introduction of Ahsoka, I think Lucasfilm has a pretty good track record of telling stories that add a new way of looking at the films.

Of course, like Ahsoka, she has to be a character in her own right with her own story. If she was a Calrissian but simply exists to be a plot device in the story of two dudes then this is a waste of time.

Sana, Calrissian or not, is also a likely candidate as a character in a Han Solo origin movie.

I didn't particularly care for this six issue run, but here's to them coming up with a more interesting story line then.

"Sana Calrissian"

I agree that'd be neater (though that brings up a few questions), but again to me that is still a predictable story. They got married because they were young and Han/Lando were buddies, Han used the marriage to some how gain advantage over the Calrissians, or some other reason I totally expect from a smuggler. Per Lando's line if it is the case they are just adding things in to pander to OT stuff.

Could Sana come out and be a cool character? Sure. I just don't attribute her and Han having been married to be that big of a deal.

Huh?

Sana being Lando's sister would also help explain why he betrays him to the Empire.

Which is cool, but again it just seems odd in retrospect. Like Leia not knowing who Lando is or Lando never mentioning Sana. Which of course, I get limitations, but it just sits weird.

Per Haruun Kal, they made a subspecies of humans who were all black.

That's fair enough. I enjoy it in spite of that. We know the broad strokes of where the story will go, because it's between two movies, but the details are what's most interesting to me. Specifically what those details add to the story and how they change the story, much like TCW did.

It was "primitive" people in an African jungle in SPACE.

Awful.

Not really. New side character, will probably vanish into the ether when her plot relevance ends. Or die. Either way, I think she's going to be the catalyst for why Han is suddenly trying to get into Leia's cinnamon buns in Empire, as they didn't have any romantic chemistry in A New Hope beyond "Hey I think this Princess is hot, oh wait she's got fat wads of creds too!". Since IIRC these comics are set between ANH and ESB right? There's a lot that's likely to have happened to have caused the sudden change in Han.

Also, Sana Calrissian? Eh, maybe. Terribly cliche though. Would rather that not be the case, as it'd become a terribly small galaxy awfully fast.

Also, she looks like a Medusa with that hair. We shouldn't trust her, lest she turn readers to stone.

Hoping Sana stays a major character in the new EU.

He's already hitting on her in this comic. He doesn't love her but he's interested in her. We were seeing that evolution before Sana arrived.

Not really. If she was a relative of some other character, sure, but Han and Lando already knew each other and were friends before Episode IV. So of course there'd be a situation where he could conceivably marry Lando's sister, without it being small universe-y.

I'd honestly rather she not be related to Lando, really. It just sounds like a cheap move to say "Hey, Lando has a Sister that was never mentioned, and she is Han Solo's wife that you also never heard of".

It'd be more interesting if she didn't have to rely on being related or associated with film characters.

I used to agree on the whole "no one ever heard of them and they were never mentioned in the films" point. Now I'll counter with this.

No one ever heard of Ahsoka Tano, and Anakin having had a Padawan wasn't mentioned in Episode III.

If done well, these things can work. I don't think we need to be beholden to concepts that were only mentioned in the films.

Star Wars #7 came out today, and it was a standalone Ben Kenobi story from the journals that Luke discovered in the last few issues.

I loved this issue. Anyone else read it?
