I suspect that some of the more popular parts of the pre-movie EU will remain canon, just as Darth Bane as a character is still canon. The biggest thing about doing away with those stories too was so that they could tell new stories, probably movies, in that era some day. But there are certain things that are pretty popular, and characters like Darth Revan have nearly made it into canon already, so it wouldn't surprise me if writers found a way to reincorporate them if they're appropriate to the story (like how Rebels found an appropriate place for Thrawn).

You're going to find the general membership of this site is incredibly hostile to Legends material in general @Great Jamie , so you're probably not going to get a good conversation out of discussing it unless you mention specifics.

Like the excellent Thrawn trilogy, or X-Wing books, or Jedi Quest books, or KOTOR, or the Boba Fett books, or any of the other massively impressive works of fiction that made up the old EU.

Unless you mention a specific to discuss, the whole topic is going to be tossed out the window as if the EU was nothing but the Yuuzhan Vong and the Sun Crusher.

(And yeah don't bother discussing anything negative about the new movies at all until the marketing hype wears off in 4 or 5 years like it did with the prequels. You're not gonna get anywhere doing that lol)

I think that's a pretty gross exaggeration. There's a whole lot of people here (myself included) that love the Thrawn trilogy and the X-Wing series. The problem is when these decades old works conflict with the ability to tell new stories. What's the piont of rehashing stories we've already seen? It's a waste of storytelling effort and restricts creativity. So IOT tell new stories, you either have to find an area that's not covered but still relevant enough to draw an audience- which is very difficult with the old EU- or scrap it all and take what's good and work it into a new narrative, which is what Disney has done. People act like Marvel and DC don't reboot their entire universe every so often.

The fact is that a whole hell of a lot of the EU was young adult garbage that served no point other than constricting new story telling. As for the NuTrilogy, it's not that they're beyond criticism- there's plenty of that to go around- it's that a number of people choose not to make rational arguments or criticize shortcomings in the movie that are all present in the OT, without any sort of acknowledgement of that. There's been legitimate debates on merits and shortfalls, but half assed non-sensical arguments aren't going to merit healthy debate.

Also the idea that it took 4 to 5 years to criticize the prequels is... a tad historically revisionist.
