LB-700 SHUTTLE

AFFILIATION
Various.

MANUFACTURER
Rontorque Manufacturing.

CLASS
Shuttle.

ROLE
Light transport.

COMPOSITION
Durasteel and transparisteel.

DIMENSIONS
Length - 20 meters.

CREW
1 minimum, 3 optimum.

PASSENGER CAPACITY
12.

CARGO CAPACITY
10 standard tons.

HANGAR CAPACITY
N/A.

CONSUMABLES
2 standard weeks.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
An LB-700 shuttle can reach 70 MGLT maximum speed and has average maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 1x dual light laser turret.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The LB-700 is a small, relatively fast shuttle produced by the Rontorque Manufacturing corporation of Tatooine, one of the desert world's only large industrial concerns. Despite its humble origins, however, the LB-700 has found respectable sales in markets scattered across the Outer Rim, and has developed something of a cult following.

The LB-700 is 20 meters in length, and is arranged in a rough lifting body configuration, giving it decent aerodynamics compared to many starships. Able to carry 10 tons of cargo and 12 passengers, it has a crew of 3, including a pilot, co-pilot and flight attendant. Only the pilot is strictly necessary to fly the ship, the co-pilot being legally necessary to carry passengers under most jurisdictions, with the flight attendant seeing to the comfort and other needs of said passengers; some budget spacelines will omit the flight attendant to lower ticket prices, at the cost of service. The LB-700 is protected by shields, as well as a single light laser turret for defense; when used, the turret is usually operated by either the co-pilot or the flight attendant.

The LB-700 is a popular short-haul passenger hauler in many parts of the Outer Rim, although some independent owners prefer only to haul freight, renovating the passenger accommodations into an additional cargo bay or living space. It is also sometimes carried by large passenger and cruise liners, which use LB-700s as a launch for ferry crew, passengers and supplies to and from destination worlds.

LEGALITY
Legal. LB-700 shuttles are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a standard type of shuttle used by everyone.

ADVANCED TECH
No. LB-700 shuttles are reasonably common throughout the Galaxy, and are fairly easy to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A Genner-class shuttle can reach 60 MGLT maximum speed and has average maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 1x dual light laser turret.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Genner-class shuttle is a utility spacecraft produced by the Zentine Dynamics corporation and sold throughout the Galaxy. A utilitarian design, it can carry both cargo and passengers, but lacks many amenities.

The Genner, nicknamed the "Getter" by its crews, is a medium-sized design, 25 meters in length with a crew of 2, plus 10 passengers and up to 15 tons of cargo. It can reach a top speed of 60 MGLT, and has a class 4 hyperdrive, making it fairly zippy over interstellar distances compared to many of its contemporaries. For defense, it is equipped with light shields, as well as a single, retractable dorsal laser turret, operated remotely by the co-pilot.

Zentine's main customers for the Genner are industrial firms, governments, military and paramilitary organizations, who mainly use the type to ferry personnel and freight as needed. The type's institutional connotations are disliked by most independent spacers, who tend to gravitate toward more aesthetically pleasing or better equipped vessels. Even so, the type is well liked by fleet operators, and many pilots have put time in behind the controls of a Genner, whether they've actually enjoyed it or not.

LEGALITY
Legal. Genner-class shuttles are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a standard type of shuttle used by large organizations.

ADVANCED TECH
No. Genner-class shuttles are reasonably common throughout the Galaxy, and are fairly easy to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A 4/S Vagrant can reach 90 MGLT maximum speed and has decent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 1x medium laser cannon.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The 4/S Vagrant is a 2-seat starhopper produced by the Corellispeed corporation of Corellia, a small firm which was started by a group of drinking buddies who were all laid off from various other starship manufacturers around the same time. The company has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the basic transportation market, with products like the Vagrant forming the core of their business.

The Vagrant is nothing special on the surface. Requiring 1 pilot and having room for 1 passenger in a side-by-side arrangement, the ship can also carry up to 500 kilograms of cargo. It has a top speed of 90 MGLT, putting it in starfighter territory, albeit the lower end of that particular spectrum. Its maneuverability is also respectable. The Vagrant also has a class 4 hyperdrive, allowing it to cross interstellar distances.

The Vagrant, like most starhoppers, is equipped with a few amenities for extra passenger comfort. These include seats which can be fully reclined and slept in, an enclosed refresher and a tiny autogalley.

Unlike many civilian vessels its size, the Vagrant is armed with a medium laser cannon, and has light shields for defense. Though not intended as a combat vessel, some spacers use it as one anyway; the Vagrant is a staple of low-rent mercenaries and truly broke planetary defense forces.

Starhoppers like the Vagrant are not an uncommon sight in many parts of the Galaxy. Unlike starfighters, which are typically single-seat affairs with limited cargo space, such vessels can nominally carry a passenger, as well as an at least useful amount of freight. Starhoppers are also far easier to license and maintain than most starfighters.

LEGALITY
Legal. 4/S Vagrants are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a standard type of small, 2-seat interstellar runabout.

ADVANCED TECH
No. 4/S Vagrants are reasonably common throughout the Galaxy, and are fairly easy to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A Drekavac interceptor can reach 110 MGLT maximum speed and has excellent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The M-612 Drekavac is a fast interceptor with an unusual history and heritage. Developed and manufactured by the Detailed Dynamics corporation, with substantial initial backing by certain inter-governmental agencies on its planet of origin, the Drekavac is one of relatively few known starfighters that has made the transition from aircraft to spacecraft with only minor changes to its design.

The Drekavac was originally developed on the planet Domhan, an isolated world on the fringes of Wild Space. Domhan had been colonized by Humans some time prior to the foundation of the Old Republic, before being subsequently cut off from the Galaxy at large. Domhanese society had regressed to a Bronze-age level, before slowly rebuilding itself to an industrial level over thousands of years. In that time, any records the Domhanese may have had of their origins were lost, and they forgot about the Galaxy at large. Despite their isolation, Domhanese eventually rediscovered atomic fission, and were well on their way to achieving spaceflight, when space instead came to them.

Domhan was rediscovered by scouts in the employ of a pirate gang. The pirates, possessing superior Galactic-level technology, set up a hidden base on one of Domhan's moons, raiding isolated remote population centers on the planet below for slaves and certain other resources. Their actions eventually roused the attention of several of the planet's nation-states, who investigated, independently discovering the "UFO" threat.

Domhan's local technology, barely having advanced to the level of gas turbine aircraft and primitive fission power, was no match for the invaders. Eventually, however, the various effected nations began to cooperate, forming an international task force charged with countering the UFOs and their alien occupants.

The Drekavac, named for a monster of local mythology, was the result of that cooperation. Developed from a specification put forth by the Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Establishment, or SHADE, the aircraft was designed to be the single most advanced aerial fighting machine that Domhanese science had yet devised. Meant to intercept and shoot down the impossibly fast and maneuverable UFOs, it was powered by a combined cycle ram-rocket engine, capable of propelling it at up to mach 4, and was armed with chemical explosive missiles and heavy repeating slug cannons. Further, it had a heavily reinforced design, allowing it to perform ramming attacks as a last resort, although this generally damaged the aircraft beyond repair. Launched on rocket-propelled sleds from special ramp silos in hidden locations, with their pilots lying prone in their cockpits to resist high G-forces in the absence of inertial compensators, it proved a challenge to the pirates' own pinnaces and fast light freighters even in the upper atmosphere, and even managed to score a few kills against them.

Eventually, however, sector law enforcement caught up with the pirates, and they was chased out of the system. Official first contact was initiated with the human Domhanese, and Domhan was officially welcomed into broader Galactic society.

The Drekavac, meanwhile, was now reconsidered by its manufacturer. With SHADE's planetary defense responsibilities now reduced, and with the organization now having access to state-of-the-art starfighters on the open Galactic market, it swiftly retired its obsolete interceptors. Detailed Dynamics, the Drekavac's designer, was still convinced that the type had merit; it had managed to successfully fight alien ships before, surely there was some life left in it still. The company therefore started a program to modernize the Drekavac using newly available Galactic technology.

The resulting "new" Drekavac is a Galaxy-beating design. Still a point-defense interceptor, it is now equipped with conventional ion propulsion rather than chemical-fueled thermal expansion engines, allowing it to reach an impressive 110 MGLT maximum speed. It is no longer limited to atmospheric flights; the Drekavac functions as a true spacecraft, with 24 hours worth of consumables. Armed with a pair of light laser cannons and concussion missiles, it is also still sturdier than many interceptors, able to take a few hits even though it lacks a shield.

The Drekavac was re-adopted by SHADE in its modernized form, and the type has found some moderate success on the export market. Several planetary defense forces in the Outer Rim use Drekavacs as their primary interceptor.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Without proper licensing and/or bribes/connections, Drekavac interceptors are legal only for recognized military and paramilitary groups.

INTENT
To create a standard type of missile-equipped short-range interceptor.

ADVANCED TECH
No. Drekavac interceptors are reasonably common, although being legally restricted makes them non-trivial for the average individual to own.

STARDASH-CLASS PINNACE

AFFILIATION
Various.

MANUFACTURER
Haor Chall Engineering.

CLASS

ROLE
Combat utility spacecraft.

COMPOSITION
Alusteel and transparisteel.

DIMENSIONS
Width - 20 meters.

CREW
1 minimum, 2 optimum.

PASSENGER CAPACITY

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A Stardash-class pinnace can reach 80 MGLT maximum speed and has excellent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Stardash-class pinnace is a 5-seat spacecraft produced by Haor Chall Engineering, a corporation founded by the Xi Char cult, a religious order which considers high-precision manufacturing to be an act of worship. As a result, their products are mostly of high quality and reasonable price, and the Stardash is of no exception.

The Stardash has a disc-shaped central fuselage, with a pair of vertical stabilizers of similar design on outriggers. Possessing excellent maneuverability for its size, the type is a match for starfighters, in turning ability if not in speed, which tops out at 80 MGLT. The type has a crew of 2, including a pilot and a co-pilot, although the latter is not strictly necessary. It can carry up to 3 passengers, or 4 if the co-pilot is substituted. Armament consists of a pair of light laser cannons, as well as a tractor beam emitter. The ship does suffer in terms of defense, however; unlike most pinnaces, it lacks a shield projector, and must instead rely on the durability of its hull and its ability to dodge hazards.

Stardash pinnaces are used by any number of customers across the Galaxy, in a variety of rolls. However, the type has achieved a level of infamy in the hands of criminals and charlatans on the fringes of known space. Because of its unusual profile, it is the vehicle of choice for beings wishing to take advantage of primitive, pre-hyperdrive cultures. Pilots will often buzz undeveloped planets, sometimes landing to interact with the locals, sometimes abducting them; it has also been noted that, if properly reconfigured, the passenger compartment of a Stardash can be used to hold medium-sized livestock. It cuts both ways, of course; several industrial-age planets have had their technological development rapidly accelerated after studying Stardashes that crashed as a result of reckless handling, or which were shot down by local military forces.

LEGALITY
Legal. Stardash-class pinnaces are typically considered to be very light freighters, and can be registered as such under most jurisdictions.

INTENT
To create general purpose starship which looks like a flying saucer.

ADVANCED TECH
No. Stardash-class pinnaces, while not exactly common, are still fairly easy to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A BH-3 Curvet can reach 80 MGLT maximum speed and has decent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 2x light laser cannon.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The BH-3 Curvet is a 2-seat starhopper produced by the Closer Worlds Space Products company, a Mid Rim manufacturing startup which is attempting to break into the shuttle market. An unremarkable craft, its honest, well-engineered design has nevertheless made it a popular choice for beings seeking a small personal starship, but who need something at least marginally more capable than a starhopper. The Curvet has therefore carved out a niche for itself, buoying its manufacturer's fortunes.

The Curvet is small, but has relatively well thought out accommodations, with seating for the pilot, co-pilot and 2 passengers located beneath a large, domed cockpit canopy. The ship has a private refresher and a small autogalley, but is not really intended for long-haul journeys, with only reclining seats to sleep on, for example. Despite its small size, it can carry a respectable 4 tons of cargo, which can be loaded or unloaded relatively easily through large clam-shell doors located aft. Its speed and maneuverability are respectable, able to reach 80 MGLT, fast for a shuttle. For defense, it is equipped with light shields, as well as a pair of fixed light laser cannons. Despite these last two features, the Curvet is no match for proper starfighters unless flown by a truly skilled pilot, and anyone jumped by such craft in a Curvet would do well to make use of its class 4 hyperdrive at the earliest convenience.

Curvets are a popular choice for casual pilots, although their small size and speed make them attractive to courier services. Starship thieves love it as well; for 5 years running after its introduction, the BH-3 Curvet was the most commonly stolen spacecraft in the Mid Rim according to law enforcement records. Stolen examples commonly end up in the Outer Rim, where they can be found in the hands of small-time smugglers, con-beings and pirates.

LEGALITY
Legal. BH-3 Curvets are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a standard type of small, 4-seat interstellar runabout.

ADVANCED TECH
No. BH-3 Curvets are quite common throughout the Galaxy, and are extremely easy to steal, buy or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A Rambler-class freighter can reach 40 MGLT maximum speed and has average maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Rambler-class freighter is a medium cargo transport produced by Republic Sienar Systems. One of the company's rare entries to the civilian market, the Rambler was built to fill a niche, and has done so quite nicely.

Out on the frontiers of the known Galaxy, logistics are a matter of life and death. Colonies and outposts which have not yet reached self-sufficiency rely on shipments of food, fuel and equipment, items which can only be brought in by ship. In these remote regions, however, shipping of anything can be a difficult and often dangerous proposition. Astrogation is often shoddy, with few direct hyperlanes, and there is constant danger from various natural phenomena, not to mention the scourge of pirates who haunt the Galaxy's lonely backrocket regions.

Typically, shipping through these regions is done with convoys, fleets of ships which can support one-another, and which are protected by heavily armed escorts, the weapons of most cargo freighters being less than adequate against the dangers they face. This method is safer, but costly; though much more freight can be transported this way, the cost per ton is more than many fledgling settlements can easily afford.

Designed by Sienar to meet the needs of these remote planets and outposts, the Rambler is a long-haul transport, resembling as much a far-ranging scout ship as it does a cargo hauler. Designed around the needs of remote planets and outposts, the Rambler has the consumables to delve deep into the thicket of ad-hoc hyperlanes at the edge of known space, able to stay in space for up to 6 months at a time without resupply. Crucially, it also does not, under most circumstances, require an escort; with twin quad laser turrets, it can fend off almost any threat it comes across. This, combined with a sturdy hull, means that the Rambler can travel solo even through dangerous regions, eschewing the need for a convoy or dedicated escorts.

All this, and the Rambler can carry a respectable payload. Cargo is loaded and unloaded primarily through two large hatches located amidships on the port and starboard sides, which open directly into two cavernous holds, each with a 45 ton capacity, for a total of 90. For oversized loads, the partitions between these two bays can be removed, creating a single enormous space.

Aside from the cargo hold, the Rambler has better-than-average crew and passenger accommodations, an important consideration on long voyages. Each of the 4 crew are allotted a private cabin with an attached refresher, extravagant compared to most freighters. The 16 total passengers are not quite so lucky, being forced to double up in 8 separate cabins, although these are considered spacious by freighter standards as well. Other amenities include a full galley with a high-end autochef, as well as separate crew and passenger lounges, located to port and starboard, respectively.

Notably, the Rambler is equipped with a medical suite, useful for handling emergencies in deep space. Often, these shipboard med-bays are the closest thing to a real med-center many remote colony worlds will see for decades, and when such vessels land, colonists will often travel to get appointments with a ship's doctor or even medical droid.

The Rambler can only make 40 MGLT in realspace, but is equipped with a class 2 hyperdrive, giving in excellent speed over interstellar distances.

Overall, the Rambler is a capable vessel, and has proven popular within its market. The type is most commonly found plying remote "bush" routes in the Outer Rim and Wild Space, and has gained a significant following among the pilots who make their living in such regions. Needless to say, the type has been a success for Sienar, and a lifeline to the Galaxy's most inaccessible worlds.

LEGALITY
Legal. Rambler-class freighters are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a long-range freighter suited to conditions on the frontiers of civilization.

ADVANCED TECH
Yes. Rambler-class freighters are heavily armed and have a much more potent hyperdrive than most freighters. As such, they require a plot of at least 2 threads to acquire.

FROMMON VERSATILE TRANSPORT

AFFILIATION

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
A Frommon Versatile Transport can reach 50 MGLT maximum speed and has average maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 4x fixed medium laser cannon.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Frommon Versatile Transport, or FVT, is an antique model of light freighter originally manufactured by the Frommon corporation. Though no longer in production, examples of the FVT numbered in the millions by the time it was discontinued, and it was one of the most ubiquitous cargo transports of its day. Because of this, and because of their simple, sturdy, long-lasting construction, large numbers of FVTs remain in service to this day.

The FVT has a cone-shaped fuselage, with four external engine pods mounted on stubby outriggers. Its cockpit is mounted in the nosecone, with side-by-side seating for the pilot and co-pilot in a "floating" pivot mount along with the controls. The FVT, indeed, is intended to land and takeoff as a tail-sitter, transitioning to horizontal flight once it has risen up on its repulsorlifts, with the cockpit configuration adjusting accordingly.

Cargo is loaded onto the FVT through 4 massive doors which, in combination with broad retractable ramps, effectively open up the cargo bay from all directions, making the ship exceptionally easy to load and unload. The FVT's large, high-volume cargo bay, which essentially takes up the entire midsection, makes it useful for transporting awkward, bulky cargoes that even many modern freighters have trouble with. Total capacity is a respectable 60 tons.

The FVT is decently armed for a freighter, equipped with a quartet of medium laser cannons, although these are not turreted, and instead fixed in the nose, just below - or behind, depending on orientation - the cockpit. This means the ship has trouble fending off starfighters or other small craft without some fancy maneuvering, which it does not excel at. For defense, however, it does have reasonable shields, coupled with a generally sturdy hull.

The FVT has a crew of 2, and can carry up to 10 passengers. Each crew-member has a cramped but private cabin, although passengers must make use of just 2 cabins, each with 5 sleeping berths. The ship also has central lounge area, two small refreshers, a modest galley and came standard with a high-spec holotable for games and other entertainment. The OEM holotable, notably, is highly sought after; most FVTs still in service have had their original tables removed or replaced with more modern equipment, and thus ships still equipped with the factory tables command a premium on the collectors' market.

Despite its age, the FVT is still a reliable workhorse in many parts of the galaxy. Though often dismissed by spacers in favor of newer, flashier ships, the type still has a dedicated following, and has even started to become collectable. It is also a popular "project" ship; having been produced in vast numbers, examples can be found rusting away in many junkyards, cheap to buy and easy to restore or modify, with ready sources of parts available. It has been claimed, in fact, that it is possible to assemble a complete, brand new FVT entirely out of parts bought from aftermarket suppliers. Similarly, several small starship manufacturers produce modern vessels very similar to the FVT in terms of systems and layout, to the point that many are compatible with original FVT parts.

LEGALITY
Legal. Frommon Versatile Transports are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and can be registered without undue fuss.

INTENT
To create a standard type of vintage light freighter.

ADVANCED TECH
No. Frommon Versatile Transports are ubiquitous across the Galaxy, and are fairly easy to buy, steal or otherwise acquire.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
An SX-18 Salamander can reach 90 MGLT maximum speed and has decent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT
  • 2x medium laser cannon.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The SX-18 Salamander is a snubfighter produced by the Telex-Delcor corporation, which is better known for its small work skiffs. Unremarkable by most metrics, the Salamander does stand out from the crowd with its ability to carry a single passenger in addition to the pilot, while still being equipped with a hyperdrive and shields, though it lacks any very heavy armament aside from its twin medium laser cannons. Speed is middling, only 90 MGLT, but this is considered acceptable by most.

Due to its ability to carry a passenger, the military version of the Salamander, designated the SX-18A, has found a niche with mercenaries, law enforcement and even some special operations units. An unarmed variant, the SX-18U, is produced for sale as a civilian sport flyer, although it is relatively simple to retrofit the intended armament. As a result, the type is popular with pirates and other outlaws, who can buy them on the open market without raising too many alarms.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Without proper licensing and/or bribes/connections, the armed version of the SX-18 Salamander is legal only for recognized military and paramilitary groups. The unarmed civilian version can be had without much hassle, but retrofitting armament to this version is generally considered to be illegal without extensive re-licensing.

INTENT
To create a standard type of passenger-carrying starfighter.

ADVANCED TECH
No. SX-18 Salamanders are reasonably common, although the armed version being legally restricted makes them non-trivial for the average individual to own.

Designed as a successor to the company's earlier Nica-class research ship, it is likewise built to order, and is primarily used by universities, government agencies and corporate research institutes. They are a popular choice for long-range expeditions, especially into unknown space.

Like its predecessor, most Geophysic-class vessels are unique in interior configuration, being adapted to the needs of whatever research they are assigned to, there are some of the standard features that most such vessels have. These include twin hangar bays, each with a capacity of up to 5 shuttle-type craft, as well as equipment for the launch and recovery of probe droids. The Geophysic is also equipped with not one, but two high-powered sensor suites, one optimized for long-range scanning, while the other has a shorter range, but much higher resolution, allowing for more detailed scans of specific objects or areas. Tying everything together is a robust central computer system, capable of collating and analyzing large amounts of data quickly and efficiently.

Though the Nica-class is not a warship, vessels of its type do tend to visit dangerous regions of the Galaxy, and are appropriately equipped to defend themselves. This takes the form of a medium deflector screen generator, capable of repelling heavy space debris, as well as a quartet of light laser turrets, 2 mounted dorsally and 2 ventrally, although they are meant more for destroying hazardous debris than engaging enemy vessels. The type has a quartet of tractor beams, as well, meant primarily for locking onto items of interest and pulling them closer for inspection. The Geophysic really is not meant to get into fights; though it is a durable vessel, its fire control and targeting systems are rudimentary at best, and it would not last long against a concerted attack.

As noted, Geophysic-class vessels are often heavily customized on the inside, but typically contain a respectable medical bay, capable of caring for most ailments suffered by crew and passengers on a long voyage, as well as a hydroponics bay, which provides all aboard with a touch of nature as well as augmenting the ship's consumables with fresh produce. The ship also typically has a recreation room, equipped with entertainment options, exercise equipment and other conveniences to help the crew and passengers unwind when not working.

Geophysic-class vessels are not exactly a common sight in most of the civilized Galaxy, but can often be found on the fringes, investigating strange phenomena and pushing out the boundaries of known space, furthering the cause of science.

LEGALITY
Legal. Geophysic-class research ships are a fairly standard part of many deep-space expeditions, and do not tend to attract much attention from authorities most of the time.

INTENT
To create a dedicated research vessel for this setting, as might be used in a major scientific expedition.

ADVANCED TECH
Yes. Though not warships, Geophysic-class science cruisers are large, expensive, and contain specialized equipment. A plot consisting of 1-2 threads would be required to get one.

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The LCX is a snubfighter that was originally manufactured by the Free Chandrilla Fleetworks, a research and manufacturing outfit created by the Rebel Alliance and originally staffed mainly by technical personnel from Senator Mon Mothma's home-world of Chandrilla. FCF later absorbed defectors from a number of Imperialized manufacturers, notably including a team from the Incom Corporation, which had created the Alliance's mainstay starfighter, the T-65B X-Wing.

Though the X-Wing was a capable machine, and was well liked by its pilots, Alliance Starfighter Command had constant issues with procurement. Although Rebel shipyards - with the help of Incom defectors - had managed to reverse engineer and start production of their own X-Wings, the design was complex and laborious to assemble, especially given the primitive conditions many Rebel production lines operated under. On top of this, the various components required by the design were expensive and difficult to source. Desperate to alleviate the constant shortages of equipment Rebel units faced due to production bottlenecks, Starfighter Command tasked the Free Chandrilla Fleetworks with developing an alternative to the X-Wing that would be simpler and cheaper to mass-produce in Rebel factories, but which would preferably not sacrifice the X-Wing's strengths.

Taking this difficult task in stride, FCF went to work.

The Low Cost X-wing, or LCX, was based on a simple design criteria; identify all the most complicated aspects of the X-Wing, and if possible, replace them with cheaper, simpler alternatives. The resulting vessel resembled almost a cross between an X-Wing and a TIE Interceptor; the type indeed recycled the main fuselage of the T-65B, albeit with a number of internal alterations, but the trademark variable geometry strike foils ("S-foils") had been replaced with long, fixed thermal regulation vanes, which eliminated costly, complex moving parts. The drive units, too, had been replaced; the four Incom 4L4 fusial thrust engines had been substituted for 2 units sourced from Koensayr Manufacturing. These units, while less sophisticated than those used by the X-Wing, were in the same family as those used by the BTL-A4 Y-Wing starbomber, and could use many of the same replacement parts, easing maintenance and repair; indeed, the LCX ended up having 50% overall parts commonality with the Y-Wing. Armament was essentially the same as the X-Wing, including 4 wing-mounted medium laser cannons, as will as 2 proton torpedo launchers of the same type found in the X-Wing. The LCX also carried a deflector screen generator, giving it the X-Wing's combat durability as well.

There were a few areas where the LCX came up short, of course. With its long thermal vanes in place of the X-Wing's compact S-foils, its overall length was greater by a full 2.5 meters, making it a bit more cumbersome for shipboard operations, and a larger target in general during combat. While the type was easier to manufacture and service, it was also slightly less forgiving; corners were cut with the ship's controls and avionics, giving it harsher handling characteristics than the X-Wing, and making it unsuitable for green pilots. Finally, and perhaps most glaringly in the eyes of many who had experience with the X-Wing, the LCX dispensed with its predecessor's astromech interface socket; this not only deprived pilots of their often beloved droid co-pilots, but reduced the ship's overall survivability, as the X-Wing's onboard droid was often used to affect in-flight repairs which the LCX, with no droid, could not undertake. Hyperspace travel was still possible, however, as the droid socket had been substituted for a simple navicomputer, although jumps were now accomplished with a slower class 2 drive compared to the X-Wing's class 1.

FCF submitted the first LCX prototypes to Starfighter Command at the beginning of 1 ABY, and within a year, flight testing had been completed. Starfighter Command had misgivings about the design, but ultimately had little choice but to adopt it, as the Alliance was still experiencing a severe bottleneck in starfighter procurement. Production of the LCX began in 2 ABY, with the first frontline units receiving the type in the early part of 3 ABY, a few months prior to the Battle of Hoth.

Ultimately, the LCX would never be a true replacement for the T-65B, which would continue in production at various Alliance factories. The LCX was mainly issued as a replacement unit for pilots who had survived the destruction of their X-Wings. It was not especially well liked by those who received it, being seen as a cheaper, coarser alternative to the more refined X-Wing; flying it was penance for wasting good equipment. Only a handful of Alliance squadrons ever used the type as a mainstay, and after X-Wing production finally picked up steam, of course, the type was increasingly marginalized.

The LCX did have its proponents, of course. Being dangerous for novice pilots due to its unforgiving controls, it was issued almost exclusively to pilots who had some prior experience, giving the type better overall results in combat. At least a few of these pilots attained ace status while flying the LCX, notably including Lieutenant Vivren Elker of Yellow Squadron, who downed an estimated 17 TIEs of various models during the Battle of Endor. The LCX, despite its unsuitability for rookie pilots, also served in an important role with the Alliance's pilot training program; it equipped the 254th Aggressor Squadron, who carried out dissimilar aerospace combat exercises against training squadrons equipped with other fighter and bomber types, including X-Wings. This training proved invaluable in providing green recruits with the skills needed to survive in combat against the Empire.

After the Battle of Jakku and the end of the Galactic Civil War, LCX production finally came to an end, with the New Republic understandably preferring the standard X-Wing line as its mainstay starfighter. This was not the end of the road for the LCX, however; examples retired from New Republic service were sold off to various Outer Rim governments, and a number even made it onto the open market. The type's simple design and ease of maintenance has kept them in service for decades. Indeed, in recent years a few of the mothballed production lines were sold off to Rekklemat Products, a small starship manufacturer which specializes in finding markets for obsolete designs. Rekklemat produces spare parts, and has even been building complete new LCX starfighters for several years, mainly selling them to collectors as reproduction warbirds.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Without proper licensing and/or bribes/connections, an LCX starfighter is legal only for recognized military and paramilitary groups.

INTENT
To create a standard type of old starfighter.

ADVANCED TECH
No. LCX starfighters are relatively easy to attain, although being legally restricted makes them non-trivial for the average individual to own.

Trini Halrixien's Barancese Asterine has a base top speed of 85 MGLT and has decent maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Barancese Asterine is a pattern of light combat aerospace craft which was developed in the Tion Cluster by starshipwrights of the planet Barancar. Commissioned for the empire of Xim the Despot, they were some of the finest small ships of their time, superior in speed an maneuverability to the comparatively large and ponderous pinnaces of their day, and capable of functioning both inside a planetary atmosphere and in the vacuum of space, a rarity for dedicated fighter-craft at the time.

Asterines are light, elegant craft, just over 12 meters long and made mostly of titanium, with a tapered, highly aerodynamic fuselage and semi-swept wings. Armament was impressive for their day, consisting of 4 nose-mounted beam-tube cannons, roughly equivalent in power to modern light laser cannons, albeit with inferior range, requiring Asterines to get within a couple of hundred meters of their opponent to ensure damage, practically touching in modern terms. Unlike modern fighters, Asterines are propelled by a primitive rocket motor, fueled by a magazine of Bordhell-type fuel slugs which is sufficient for about 24 standard hours flying time, a short duration now but nearly unmatched at the time the Asterine was designed. Despite this primitive technology, Asterines can reach an astonishing 100 MGLT, lightning fast in their day and still very competitive in the present.

Despite their sleek lines, Asterines were eventually overtaken by advances in technology, and have not been seen much since Xim's day. Functional examples are highly prized by collectors, and are exceedingly rare.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Though primitive, Barancese Asterines are classified as combat craft under Galactic law. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring create an example of an ancient starfighter from the time of Xim the Despot.

RESTRICTIONS
Barancese Asterines are extremely rare, and are not readily available to be casually found or purchased. A character in possession of one should preferably role-play out the events that led to them acquiring one.

AJUUR-CLASS BATTLESHIP

AFFILIATION
Hutt Kajidics.

MANUFACTURER
Hutt-affiliated starshipwrights.

CLASS
Cruiser.

ROLE
Capital ship.

COMPOSITION
Bronzium and transparisteel.

DIMENSIONS
Length - 460 meters.
CREW
50-200.

PASSENGER CAPACITY
400.

CARGO CAPACITY
6 kilotons.

HANGAR CAPACITY
  • 12x starfighter/light starbomber.
  • 4x shuttle/light freighter.

CONSUMABLES
1 standard year.

SPEED/MANEUVERABILITY
The Ajuur-class cruiser has a top speed of 40 MGLT and has sluggish maneuvering characteristics.

ARMAMENT

EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Ajuur-class battleship is a heavy capital warship - cruiser scale by the Anaxes War College classification system - which is primarily to be found in service to the Hutt clans as part of their various clan fleets. Some of the heaviest combat spacecraft fielded by the Hutts in any great numbers, they are a subject of mystery to most outsiders, as they are seldom seen outside Hutt space, and are mostly kept in reserve in systems where only Hutts and their most trusted slaves are permitted to venture.

Ajuur-class battleships date back to at least the Sith Wars, when they were used to enforce Hutt neutrality during the conflict. Since then, the design does not appear to have changed significantly, except for the general modernization of systems and weapons; it is possible, even likely, that many Ajuurs are thousands of years old, repaired and refitted many times over. The type has a long, barge-like hull, largely symmetrical at either end, with box-like weapon mounts spaced along port, starboard, dorsal and ventral surfaces. In the present day, these are equipped with a dual heavy turbolaser mount and a pair of quad laser turrets each, enough firepower to seriously hurt most opponents. There are also a quartet of torpedo launchers. The ship can carry a dozen starfighters as well, plus a few shuttles. Top speed is a stately 40 MGLT, and the Ajuur is equipped with a class 4 hyperdrive for interstellar travel. Crew compliment is some 200 sentients, plus up to 400 passengers, generally marines of some kind.

As mentioned, Ajuur-class battleships are seldom seen outside Hutt space. As a result, no-one is entirely sure how many the clans actually have, or indeed whether or not they are building more. Signs point this being true, as - especially since the start of the war which has plunged much of the Galaxy into conflict - the Hutts are likely to need all the firepower they can get in the near future.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Ajuur-class cruisers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, should anyone ever manage to get one out of Hutt space, a civilian owner would require extra licensing to operate one legally, and would receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Ajuur-class battleships are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They also may not be operated by non-Hutt characters, or at least not by characters without a very close association with the Hutts.
