DESCRIPTION
The SRV-1 scout/retrieval vehicle is a tracked ground transport manufactured by the Republic Engineering Corporation. Despite its rather narrow design brief, the SRV-1 has become a useful, highly versatile combat vehicle, albeit one which does not usually see front-line service.

Initially developed for the New Republic during the last years of the Galactic Civil War, the SRV-1 was intended as a battlefield casualty evacuation vehicle. Although a repulsorlift-equipped version was considered early in development, which would doubtless have granted the vehicle better speed and cross-country performance, it was considered that the SRV-1 would have to operate in battlefield environments where it would face anti-repulsor mines, jammers and ion pulse weapons, which would easily leave a repulsorcraft stranded. On the logic that "the ambulance should always get through," the SRV-1 was given a set of tracked bogies instead, plus a hardened power grid, which reduced its speed overland to a crawling 60 kph, but gave it unmatched resistance to ion weaponry.

Given the the vehicle was now so slow, however, and given that the Empire was not above shooting at ambulances, the SRV-1 was dutifully equipped with a pair of dual light blaster turrets for defense, each with an independent gunner who - as sensors could be blinded by ion weapons - would operate the twin cannons from directly behind them. Now that the SRV-1 was armed, the New Republic procurement board considered that it should really be given more to do on the battlefield than trundle away wounded. As a secondary role, it was slated for reconnaissance work. And of course, while it was at it, the SRV-1 could act as a transport; up to 3 tons of cargo and 8 passengers could be carried. Now, a transport ought to be versatile in its carrying options, and so the SRV-1 was modified to include an open-topped bed in the back, leaving its passengers exposed from above.

The resulting vehicle, although badly off its original design brief, proved inexplicably useful in combat. Able to cross rough terrain and shrug off ion cannon blasts, these vehicles were invaluable for keeping front-line positions supplied, plus for actually evacuating casualties. They are still used largely in this role into the present day.
