It's probably honestly Plagueis since his theme music is the exact same theme music played when Palp was telling Anakin about his former master. I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a coincidence, and JJ isn't very good at surprises.

Snoke has turned Ben Solo to the Dark Side. Destroyed the new Jedi Order Luke Skywalker was building. Dealt an enormous blow to the New Republic that Leia has worked so hard to establish. Had Han Solo murdered by his fallen son and is still hunting Luke. It's all part of his revenge against the Skywalker family for what they did. What he did:

Snoke is probably a new character who hasn't showed his true name or appearance. He is an ancient guy who has mastered the (dark side of the) force and hasn't been honest about his intentions to anyone. He has been hiding his true self in every possible way and he is much stronger than he appears to be, significantly stronger than the last Sith Lords. Contrary to many Sith, however, he isn't physically strong, perhaps because of his extremely prolonged aging. He completes his goals by manipulating others.

Snoke didn't intervene with the Galactic Empire because Vader was doing the job for him by eliminating any Jedi left. He didn't attempt to overthrow and replace Sidious because political power means little to him. He was probably doing something important at that time but away from the Empire. When the Empire fell and Luke prepared the restoration of the order he made his appearance.

So he indirectly meddled with the Jedi somehow to stop Luke Skywalker from reviving the order. Luke couldn't stop him from messing things up because Snoke is very smart and powerful and outplayed everyone eventually. The Padawans didn't become Jedi and Kylo Ren was fooled and corrupted by Snoke who used him as a proof of his victory over the Jedi. He then created the brand new KoR. These guys aren't Sith because Snoke isn't related to the Sith and the Sith died after the fall of the Empire anyway.

My theory isn't based on anything

My hope is that they don't get bogged down in explanation or character exposition.

Mystery was integral to the original trilogy and was an essential reason for it's impact on audiences and the industry overall.

To explain in a very basic sense, JAWS was more interesting when you couldn't see the shark and it made the shark showing up more impactful. That same principle in cinema is applicable to everything else as well.

When there are fifty lightsabers on screen, it loses its mystique. It becomes furniture.

His story shouldn't be some grand expansive thing, we didn't get it with Palpatine in the OT and we don't necessarily need it here.

I agree. Part of the appeal of obscure or mysterious characters to me, is that there is much more room for creative interpretation. I like to make up stories, and imagine things about characters who aren't wholly explained.

When a character's whole being and life is basically, splayed out and spoon-fed, to the audience, it is far less intriguing to me and not as fun.

I felt Force Awakens was a half measure mind you, a soft reboot that definitely tried it's fucking darndest to look, sound and feel like the OT, but the problem is...that's really all it did. Most of its contributions beyond that felt flat to me, especially Death Star 3.0

There were a million other things they could've done instead of another planet destroyer.

What about a machine that cranks out infinite soldiers?
What about a Force user that by touching Jedi, causes them to lose control of the force and become time bombs?
What about a Dyson Sphere?

There are a million other notions that would fit in this universe and they just went with that again.

The same goes for Snoke. We got another pale angry/disfigured dude wearing black with vague plans and an evil voice and a shit name.

It felt like someone trying to replicate your grandmothers' grilled cheese recipe and that's it. With little to no substance. Was it bad? Fuck no, but dang, it wasn't great.

I enjoyed TFA, but that is was really obviously a spin-off of A New Hope was my biggest gripe. I'm willing to bet Luke becomes the Yoda figure and dies in the final movie. I am really hoping they do something very different in the next film, though. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a film I'd watch over and over.

I got the feeling that the creators of the movie wanted to play it safe. So they went as far as to recreate certain aspects of Episode IV.

I've read that Episode 8 won't be like this, though. Let's hope it won't be another Empire Strikes Back

It's a business, I understand that but Star Wars will make money no matter what and it will make you money for a very long time, I don't believe they needed to play it AS safe as they did. Sure, include Stormtroopers and 'cute' reference or two, but show me something new that enhances the universe further than angry dudes in nazi clothes and people in earth tone outfits fighting in space over a moon laser and something something destiny.

We've had that story. Expand on it. Complicate it.

Interest me.

I hated the expanded universe, but in all of its dogshit, there were a few gems that would inevitably transpire when you let a hundred writers interact with an established universe for several decades.

You got cool concepts, like wounds in the Force after traumatic events, Jedi's using things other than lightsabers, plot points like the Star Forge that were still engines of war but not just death lazers.

After all that, they just decided to do the same shit again. And the same goes for Snoke.

Whoever or whatever Snoke ends up being, my guess is that his backstory and motivations will involve an exploration of the dark side in a way that the movies and other material haven't really shown yet. Aftermath hinted at a source of the dark side beyond the guy, one that the emperor sent teams out to try and find. Aftermath: Life Debt is now setting up Jakku as being a source of some sort of dark power from 1,000 years ago, possibly making it the place where the old Sith were destroyed. It was so important that, during the Clone Wars, Palpatine went there himself to start investigating it.

Either of those are a possibility for where Snoke might have come from. My guess is that he's from that source of the dark side, or somehow was touched by it and powered by it.

If that's true, could this mean that Rey has been affected by the dark side and she doesn't know it yet? Or am I overthinking it?

The dark side doesn't really work that way, so I doubt it. I do think she's most likely from Jakku originally, though. Fans have assumed that she was dropped off there, but I don't think anything has ruled out the possibility that she was always on Jakku.

You know, I never thought of that. She and whatever family she had could have lived there, and they just left her in Unkar "The Gamestop Guy" Plutt's care when they left. Makes more sense when she is crying for them to come back rather then wanting to go with them.

I just wonder if they lived in a house or an AT-AT all their lives.

From the OT anyway (because even TFA seems to have disregarded descriptions of the Force in the PT), my understanding was that it's ALL just the Force.

For example, if the Force is an ocean, then Jedi walk along its surface, championing focus above all things because if they don't maintain focus, they'll 'drown' and descend into the depths of the 'dark side' where things become more destructive and unpredictable, like fucking lightning coming out of your hands. So there were no 'sides' really, it was just a case of not abusing a performance enhancing drug so much, that you become a wild junkie who feels weak so they seek out power in order to control their environment. So then you get 'fallen Jedi', who are described as dark side force users. The dark side is just a state of being, what happens when you abuse the use of a mysterious 'force' as it were.

The original trilogy indicated this anyway, kind of like Jedi are space samurai lightning rods for nuclear energy and they can use it for good but if they use it too much they become nuclear bombs.

Now with so many different writers trying to throw in new explanations, I think it's muddying the waters incredibly because that seemed to be the original understanding of Jedi and the Force.

I don't think she was actually left with Unkar Plutt. Rey's vision was just that: a vision. It wasn't a flashback. What she was seeing was metaphorical representations of her life, not literal memories. Seeing Plutt holding the young Rey's hand was, to me, more a metaphor for her servitude to him and life on Jakku than anything else.
