Snoke, Who? What? and How?

Ever since I saw The Force Awakens I have seen hundreds of theories about how Snoke is Vader (last I checked he was a ghost), Palpatine reborn, Plageuis returned, and a million other things including, as of yet, non-canon Sith Lords. But the one thing most of these theories have ignored is the source material: Snoke himself says in the novelization that he witnessed the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire.

Vader and Palpatine did not see the rise, they were the rise as well as the fall of the empire so they are disqualified. Now to be fair, I do understand these theories and how people grasp at the totally insane to make a story interesting, but please get real!

To me it is quite obvious that Snoke is someone new, as far as we're concerned. In fact I would not be surprised if he was one of the Emperor's Advisers. However, I could accept the Plaguis theory as it would be a way to connect us to the prequels. Additionally, if Snoke were Plageuis then we would eventually need to have a story explaining how Plageuis came back or survived his death at the hands of Sidious.

So what do you guys believe? Who is Supreme Leader Snoke? What is he? How did he see the rise and fall of the Empire, and then create The First Order from the remaining ashes?

My conspiracy theory:

Snoke is Plagueis, who discovered how to manipulate life and make himself immortal, deceiving Palpatine into believing Sidious had killed his Master, but this was "merely a setback." Being immortal, Skywalker is unable to kill Snoke - Ben realizes this and begins this grand plan to kill Snoke. First he betrays the new Jedi, killing all but Skywalker to gain Snoke's trust. But he is still tempted by the Light because, afterall, his intention is noble - to eliminate the Sith and finish what Vader started - to bring balance the Force. So he kills his dad to acquire once and for all the trust of Snoke, wherein Snoke will entrust him with even more secrets. Ben is trying to learn the secret to Plagueis immortality so that he can counter it and kill him for good. Of course, the Dark Side corrupts, and Ben is destined for damnation in Ep. 8 and redemption in Ep. 9.

My theory is:

Snoke is vitiate. Vitiate said stuff like "My life spans Millenia, I have watched the rise and fall of empires." Maybe it is a clue. Vitiate cheated death more than once, we know he hid in deep space towards the end and palpatine has been said to have been sending people into deep/wild space in order to find something. Maybe it was Vitiate. It also stems from me really wanting it to be something other than Plagueis, just to make people go... Holy crap!

EDIT: I also think that the date that Kylo Ren's weapon was first designed is a huge hint. We know the design dates back to well beyond plagueis' lifespan. In that sense, I think it might be a clue, a double bluff because people seem to be sure that he got the design from a holocron. Maybe Snoke was the original created of the Crossguard style. Ezra in the new season of rebels does seem to acquire that lightsaber too, so maybe it will get a hint there.

That being said.

There is a lot of stuff pointing to plagueis, mainly because palpatine said he killed him, then just after he turned A. Skywalker he said "the power to cheat death only one had mastered" so maybe he was unsuccessful killing plagueis.

I feel like it would be a really good story that Ben turned to the dark side and sacrificed his own mental stability etc to do what had to be done!

Of course I doubt anyone predicted Vader was Luke's father after Episode 4 before anyone ever saw 5. So, who knows, maybe Snoke is really Raptor Jesus?

Vader is father in German.

My sister sat and watched all the films with me before we went to see the force awakens. And she guessed pretty soon that he was one of the main characters fathers.

@Callus Hardy Dutch is not that different from German. The pronunciation of the words meaning "father" is roughly the same. The spelling is where the difference clarifies that the word is actually taken from Dutch. If it was German the spelling would be V-A-T-E-R instead of V-A-D-E-R. So I do understand the language confusion by the English speaking community.

Yeah, Vader in Dutch is actually pronouced "faah-der". In German, the word Vater mean father as well.

Palpatine could also simply be lying to Anakin about killing Plageuis.

I just feel like... If plagueis was so powerful, he wouldn't have waited to see if palpatine failed. I mean, he almost didn't. If it hadn't been for Vader being redeemed, Luke Skywalker would have been fried on the death star.

@Tsunami I think that Plagueis would have known that Paplatine would never reach the same levels as himself because he "killed" him before he could learn those things. But again the possibility of him being Vitiate would be interesting as he would have watched from a distance as Bane rose to power.

But presumably Plagueis could have crushed palpatine and Vader and taken what they'd built? I'm just not sure why he'd have hid in the shadows for so long.

One theory is that Snoke (Plagueis or not) is not Sith, nor wants to be Sith, so perhaps he waited for Palps and Ani to kill the Jedi and the Sith so he could swoop in and take over with what he thought was right - presumably a more raw Force power use and galactic control therein. I still hope Snoke is no one in canon/legends, as we have enough ties already with everyone else.

My guess would be that, from what we can see from his appearance, that he was at some point messed up pretty badly. Perhaps his injuries from Palpatine "killing" him called for a much longer recovery than he expected?

@Tsunami Every Sith is different. If Plagueis took most of his lifetime to discover ways to create and manipulate life, I would assume that he'd be patient enough to let things happen on their own. Then, when he saw the opportunity, took control of the broken imperial remnant and built it into one big, strong threat that would put his apprentice's work to shame.

Either way, Snoke is a very different sort of creature. I feel like they have hinted at Plagueis already with some of the shots they give us in the movie which seem to parallel the cover of the Legends book: Darth Plagueis. But that could just be me reading too much into it.
