Nara Allam, Jedi Knight, had a problem. There were all sorts of expectations that being a Knight carried. Righting wrongs? Sure, she could do that no problem. Helping others? Easy as heck if you stuck at it. Crossing blades with the wicked, evil Sith? As if she'd be scared by anything like that. Unfortunately, you were also expected to pass on what you knew to the next generation. You were expected to help others learn. And that scared her more than a room filled with red lightsabers and creepy, pale-skinned freaks. What could she possibly pass on to others that some other Jedi wouldn't be more suitable for?

The latest, freshest insults to call your Master? How to crash a ship into the Klossland swamps? Screaming and shouting at the entire, assembled Order for fun and profit?

Despite her misgivings, however, the notion had persisted. That was how Nara stood in front of a group of initiates and younger padawans, all staring at her expectantly. All waiting to hear her impart some sacred wisdom that'd help them on their path.

Do they always stare like that? Please stop, I don't know anything, please. All those eyes...

She blinked and looked back at them. She'd assembled them all in a workshop, just outside the Temple itself. More like a hastily thrown-up annex to the Temple itself, the place was a chaotic mess of workbenches, basic machinery and shelves filled with spare parts. There was no quiet, ordered place to meditate here. No ancient texts filled with wisdom. This was a place where people worked and she loved it there. This was the knowledge she could give to others.

"When you go out into the wider Galaxy, whether it's with your master or on a mission, there'll be countless tests and obstacles you'll face," Nara began, trying to keep her sharp voice level, "things that won't be easily dealt with by swinging a lightsaber around, or lifting rocks with the Force. You'll have to rely on your smarts, your quick-thinking and, above all, your other skills. As Jedi, you have a responsibility to avoid messy confrontation where you can. This is why I've brought you here today."

She waved towards the benches. On each was a collection of circuitry and electrical parts. Some looked like they were straight out of a droid's chassis. Others were disassembled from machines, or old weapons. "I want you to take a look at all of these and try and tell me what they were for. Use the tools, try to disassemble them. They're all perfectly safe," Nara said, crossing her fingers behind herself, "but you might get a little bit of a shock if you try and rush through things. If you develop your understanding of electronics and circuitry now, you'll be able to use them to your advantage when you're on a mission." She hoped that all made sense. It'd seemed totally logical earlier when she ran through it in her head. The initiates just stared up at her.

"Well.... get on with it?" she said to them, shrugging slightly.
Open to anyone! Please come and join in, learn some things, laugh at Nara's desperate attempts to stumble through teaching.

When Nykoria heard that someone would be teaching technology, she couldn't pass up. Her new Padawan, a Jawa, was allegedly very good with tech. So much so, that his knowledge would blow Kori out of the water. And even almost a decade of Jedi training hadn't exorcised the Zeltron's spirit of competitiveness. Whatever it took, Kori would try to keep up with her Padawan in that regard.

The workshop looked smaller than it actually was; and definitely cramped with parts. Kori had been spending most of her time in the jungle of Ajan Kloss, so the place filled with tech felt a little alient. To think of it, she had only come there to construct her interlocking sabers. And apart from that, to borrow and return some training remotes to wave those sabers against.

Imagine Kori's surprise when she found out that most of the attendees were younger Padawans and initiates. Then again, what did she expect? Of course, there were a few people who had joined the Order at an older age. Yet the Zeltron Knight would still stand out in the crowd. To top it off, the instructor was familiar as well—Knight Nara Allam.

The instructions were pretty simple. When Nara gave the command, Kori walked towards the benches too, pretending that she was just around to watch. Picking up a circuit board, the Zeltron fiddled with it, looking at the unknown detail from all angles. "There's a wide range of things where this could come from," she mumbled, trying to find any indication where the device could fit. Perhaps she had accidentally taken the most complicated item to figure out?

Delnor liked learning new skills and tricks. Often it was simply just to learn something new even if he did not really think he would need to know it. The Jedi order actually offered many classes to learn these skills. It was all most like a big university only one where you could end up with crimson blade in you. Still Delnor would not turn down a chance to learn some thing new and since he owned a ship and droid he would learning some electronics could be helpful.

His teacher was a Jedi Knight not that older than he was. Though seeing how people joined the order at all sorts of ages it did not shock him to much that a knight was all most his age. Though it did show. Delnor was used to learning from old professor types and this younger teacher youth came out in her teaching style. She should be glade her students are Jedi who have some form of discipline at least. His old school friends would of ruined the class for him and any one else that wanted to learn. So he was thankful that he was able to carry out the task given to him.

The task it self was not to hard. Delnor was no mechanic but he had kept a eye out when he took his droid in for maintenance and asked questions. And though it was a bit of a cheat he stuck to what he thought he knew. Standing before a pile of what looked like junk of some kind, though it was real just a circuit board of some kind. Probably from some old droid Delnor thought. He thought of how it looked close to some of the parts in a R2 unit like the one he owned. It stood to reason that one thermal sensor would look like another. Picking it up he looked at it closely. "Is this part of a astomech droids life sign sensors"

Nara walked around the benches, listening into the conversations. Everyone seemed to get on with their task pretty well. The initiates chattered and shared their ideas, looking over the bits of circuitry and trying things out. Quickly, the workshop filled with the din of discussion and the beeps of electronics. The worst part? Having stop herself from jumping into the conversations and telling them what to do. Her hands twitched as she kept them at her side. Just so desperate to 'fix' things, but that wouldn't help.

That's not how you learn. You learn by doing, right? Images of her younger self trying to lift a crashed ship out of a swamp blinked before her eyes.

She noticed Kori towards the back. She approached carefully, trying not to make it seem obvious, as the other Knight fiddled with a circuit board. She watched from a little distance, smirking as she thought aloud. "Well... you could look at some of the power warnings imprinted there. Or what's on the board itself. The components and power requirements should give you some idea. Or you could just look at the port at the side," Nara suggested, pointing to the edge of the board. The data and power connectors were quite large. "There's a battery missing from this, but you might be able to find one. And that memory module there..." Nara said, pointing to it, "is the perfect size for a small droid. Maybe an older scout model?"

With that, Nara left her to have a try at it, checking out the work of the padawans. One of the older padawans, a Pantoran, asked a question about the board he'd found. She looked over it and nodded. "Good eye, it could be. Thermal sensors like that are only in larger droids, particularly repair units, astromechs, maybe some kind of protocol droid. You could probably fix it up a little, hook it up to a main CPU and get a temperature sensor droid all for yourself," Nara said, grinning at the padawan. "Have you worked with droids before?"

Power warnings? By themselves, they didn't give Kori any idea what the board did. It could be a part of anything. From a computer to a droid, as Nara "inconspicuously" mentioned. Components on the board? The Zeltron couldn't tell which one was responsible for what, even if her life depended on it. To her, all those chips and other circuitry pieces were the same. Even it they looked different from each other, and obviously did different things.

Ports though? I can work with that. If something fits and has matching power, it must belong there... Taking note of Nara's suggestion, Kori continued to fiddle while the circuit board while the other Knight engaged in a conversation with a Pantoran Padawan. After a couple of minutes spent in desperate search of a battery—Kori couldn't end up the worst student—she eventually found what she was looking for.

Alas, the battery alone wasn't enough. There wasn't any LED indication on the board, so the Zeltron had to keep looking. Luckily, there was at least one port she didn't try; and she found just the thing. A small black box on a wire didn't look like much. But the moment Kori plugged it in, the workshop was filled with angry beeps, indignant chirps, and other twitter. Those who understood Droidspeak might recognize complaints about the lack of any attached sensors or manipulators. As well as the battery being too low.

Kori had heard Droidpeak, but didn't understand it. What the Zeltron did understand was the embarrassment of some machine whining in her hands. Maybe even signaling that it had been assembled incorrectly. Therefore, she went with the "best" possible choice and hit the on/off switch on the board. "Well, I think it's obvious what I have. The main board of a droid."

Delnor listened to Knight Nara as he looked the at the component over. He had never really taken D4 apart him self since that just seemed wrong. Since friends did not normally look at each others insides. Of course D4 was a droid but that did not mean he could not be a friend. That was mostly why Delnor wanted to take this class. Delnor knew first aid to look after living comrades and this was like first aid course but for droids.

The idea of making a little temperature droid did not really appeal to Delnor. He had D4 after all and and it seemed wrong to make a droid for such a small task. Though maybe some one here could find a use for a small droid.

Delnor smiled when Knight Nara asked if had worked with droids. "Yes master, though I have never worked on droids. I did remember this part from when I took my R2 unit in to get fixed after I kind of dropped him while lifting him with the force. Truth is I kind of don't know much about how to fix droids and the Thermal sensor is what I remember from the repair shop"

Delnor stopped speaking when he heard the confused droid in the hand of a older Zeltron start beeping. It must be very confused. He wondered how he would feel if he woke up with no eyes, nose or ears and no body. Probably a fate worse than death. Thankfully droids could be turned off. Delnor chuckled and was glad he was not the worst student. "Haahaa yeah but that poor guy is blind and deaf. no more than brain with no body"

Fiach’s Jedi network was growing. Sure, many (if not most) of the people she met when she first arrived at the Order had either died, gone off on a mission and never returned or were simply keeping out of her way – but of late she was beginning to bump into the same faces more than once, and also meet some new folk.

So, the opportunity to learn from one of them – a Jedi Knight no less – was one she could not turn down. For Fiach never could turn down a free lesson. She was wary to not try to cram too much knowledge into her schedule – given she only had so much time to keep skills up to date – but given her upbringing, she figured this was a chance to learn and potentially give back. After all, she’d spent every waking minute before joining the Order working in a repair shop and had repaired everything from droids to speeders to ship’s circuitry – and invariably on a shoestring, having to cobble parts from the most unlikely places to effect a repair.

Nara’s explanation was simple enough, but Fiach held back, allowing others to go first. She recognised Nykoria (although was still unsure how to address the Zeltron) and so smiled as opposed to spoke to her. Delnor was new to her and was a fellow Padawan.

As she listened to the others converse, she walked over to a bench and – given her predilection to order and tidiness – she began to organise the parts around her. Firstly by their origin – for example droid parts. Then, when she’d finished, she categorised them a different way – by their function, such as resistors and diodes.

She may not be learning a great deal, but she found the process cathartic and realised how much she’d missed tinkering with parts and making repairs. And she resolved then and there to make herself an astrodroid.

Nara listened to Delnor's words with a smirk. "Oh, please don't call me master, it makes me sound about six-hundred. It's... still weird." Things like titles and respect were still totally alien to her. She felt she'd misjudged the padawan though, who clearly knew a lot more than she'd expected. "Oh, you have an R2 unit? Cool," she shared, actually impressed. "Sorry, I'm probably teaching you nothing useful here. There's some more advanced stuff towards the back, over there," she said, pointing towards a couple of storerooms. "There's a couple of old R2 units that are way past their prime, but they might have some parts you can salvage. There's all kinds of things in there, protocol droid heads and old BD-unit arms. There'll be something in there you can use."

Nara had already moved away from Delnor to help a younger initiate when she suddenly heard a lot of angry Droidspeak. She looked around, smirking at the Droid-equivalent of nihilistic anguish and swearing when she saw Kori looked a little confused.

"You're right! It is the main board of a droid. And as our skilled padawan said, it was more than a little annoyed at not having sensors. Or a body. Or anything. And the battery was low." She nodded towards the racks at the back of the workshop, filled with shelves. "There's some droid parts there, sorted by function. You'll be able to find some sensors and a chassis you can build off. And replace the battery!"

She left Nykoria to assemble the droid properly and saw Fiach's bench. It was a marvel of organisation. Nara was sure that she'd never seen any part of this workshop tidier. Everything had it's place and it was all beautifully sorted. "Oh wow..." she muttered, feeling a little jealous.

"Uh, hey Fiach. Any help you need?"
she asked, sounding a little unsure. With how she'd set up her bench, Nara felt like she'd just turn around and cobble together some ultra-efficient, shiny new model of droid that'd put her to shame.

Fiach observed Nara as she wandered through the assembled Jedi. Until now, Fiach had invariably been on the receiving end of all lessons but it dawned on her that, should she become a Knight, the onus would still be to learn of course, but more so to pass on knowledge. And not just to a Padawan but to anyone who sought knowledge. One-to-one training seemed fine to her, but group training like this? She shuddered involuntarily at the thought.

She was shaken from her musings by Nara herself. “No, no help as such. But I do have a question. Is it OK to use any spare parts? I don’t intend to take everything of course, but bits here and there. I have decided to embark on a project and I’m sure some of the components here would be ideal – as long as it is OK to use them.”

“Oh, and I hope you don’t mind,” she indicated the way she’d organised the workbench. “I just find its easier to locate things if there is an order to them. It’s just my way. But I can put them back as I found them if you’d prefer?”

Kori was correct in her assessment about the part's function. That was good. But the little astromech brain was pretty upset about its predicament. The droid made its "feelings" very clear: vocally and loudly. Worst of all, it seemed that everyone around could understand the droid better than the Zeltron. Definitely not the best performance by Kori. What a bummer.

Then the Knight noticed someone familiar. Padawan Fiach Dubh, whom she had met once or twice. The young human seemed to be much better at tinkering with droid parts. Already she had prepared a bench with all kinds of details, sorted properly. Fiach even mentioned a plan to build a droid of her own. With some hesitation, the Zeltron approached Nara and Fiach, and asked: "Uhmmm, hey, you think you can put this main board to good use? I mean, this one is clearly very much alive. I figured you could give it the eyes, ears, manipulators... And the care it deserves."

It's not that Kori didn't want a droid of her own. She would appreciate it, in fact. But the Zeltron knew she'd ultimately make a poor maintainer. Besides, Kori she did feel awkwardly bad about turning the droid on without any sensors; not to mention the subsequent binary name-calling and humiliation. Knowledge that the droid could end up in better hands was somewhat encouraging. "I can try to dig up some parts, if you need anything," Nykoria added; after all, she was supposed to learn something too. Learning something new while helping someone else achieve their goal seemed to be the best solution.

Delnor did not think he was ready for more advanced classes. He may of known some basics but he still felt he knew nothing. Though it was clear that he did know more than others and that maybe he would learn more from the old droids. Delnor moved to look apon the old droids and wondered aloud. "Are these droids dead? Can a droid ever be dead, can they ever be said to be alive?"

A old a R2 unit that looked a lot like his caught his eyes and Delnor felt sad. Would his R2 unit one day be discarded to be stripped for parts to. He hoped not but if droids where alive then they would die and if not would it even mater. But all Delnor could do was just stand and look at the old R2 unit

Fiach looked around at Kori – as she joined them at the workbench. She smiled her ubiquitous smile and took the main board from the Knight. “Thanks,” she said and turned it around in her hands and gave it a cursory review. “I’m sure I can, thanks. And I’ll be sure to be careful.”

Realising there were social clues she had missed, she momentarily closed her eyes and recalled all she’d been taught. “I mean,” she added, “are you sure you don’t want it? But if not, I could really do with a video sensor if you come across one.”

She looked back at Nara, “If that’s OK with you of course.”

Nara shook her head the instant Fiach talked about rearranging her things. "Oh wow, no. Don't do that, they're much better like that. Seriously, I wish I could be that organised. I might actually get something done on time," she said, smiling at the padawan's work. "Yes, use anything you want to. That goes for everyone else too. The parts in the workshop shelves, unless they're specifically labelled, are for general use. Anything that's earmarked for another project usually gets taken away somewhere private." She hesitated before turning to the younger initiates. "That doesn't go for you guys though. You've got to ask before you start pilfering parts to make laserbots and drinks dispensers."

There was a general moan of disappointment from the younger people in the class.

Nara watched the others share their ideas and parts, starting to work together. That made her smile. That'd be good, especially for something a little more complicated. "It's perfectly fine with me. I'm just here to help you guys. Do what you feel you can. Try anything that comes to mind. And if it doesn't work, you can figure out why. Droids are easy once you get the right mindset. It's just logical thinking and a ton of patience."

Delnor posed a philosophical question that was thoughtful, meaningful, and entirely too deep for Nara to really appreciate. "I know my droid would have some very rude things to say if anyone implied he wasn't alive," Nara teased, before shrugging. "I don't know. I suppose you're technically right but... just because it's not life as we know it doesn't mean it isn't life at all?" She paused for a second, thinking about what she just said. "I'm just talking complete rubbish aren't I? I was never good at the philosophical stuff, to be honest. I'm still learning."

She turned back towards Fiach and Nykoria. "If you two want to work on something bigger, there are a few different astromech droids in there that just need some new parts and a touch-up. Wouldn't be too hard for you to try and get something together. There's a couple of old R6 and R2 units in there. I think there's even a BG unit back there too."

"Even if a droid isn't alive, it's a shame when it's collecting dust or being recycled. Instead of being allowed to do its job, I guess," the Zeltron shrugged. In fact, Kori could say the same about ships and vehicles, and other things. And if anyone, Fiach seemed like the type who could get the body-less droid back into action.

"And yeah, I'm sure. I don't have my own ship. And the ship usually borrow already has an astromech." Hearing Nara mentoring the younglings got Kori to smirk, as she whispered to Fiach's ear, with a somewhat mischievous tone: "Besides, I'm going for a drink dispenser myself." A Jedi like Nara could probably hear that though.

Casting a glance at the human Knight, Kori added: "Well, uhhmm... Off to find that video... sensor... thingy. Yeah."

Delnor shook his head "No mas..., no Knight Allam I don't think you talking complete rubbish. I actually under stand what you mean. It makes the state of these droids all the more sad." He did kind of get what she was saying. Droids may not be alive in the living force but they where far from a data pad or some kind of other machine. Leaning over a smaller R2 unit Delnor saw that it's motivator had exploded and there was carbon scouring. But maybe Delnor could fix him up.

Looking around he founded a loose R2 units head lay to one side. Looking at he damged part for a guide Delnor started to look for a to see if the head had a working motivator. "So where does a droids personality come from. Is it there memory because some droids act the same even after memory wipes?"

Fiach smiled at Nara’s words. “I’d be glad to help out and organise things for you. I know what I’m doing and I enjoy seeing the order, so it’s what’s called a win-win I believe.”

And her smile widened as the Younglings and newer Padawans realised they couldn’t simply pilfer whatever they wanted. At least – not with Nara’s permission!

Fiach turned to Kori. “Do you have need of a droid for any reason? I could help you with a BG unit if you’d like. They’re useful for more than just ships and you can make sure they have all the data you need – as opposed to relying on the one you’re allocated having the relevant information.”

Her left eyebrow raised at the mention of a drink dispenser. Was this banter? Fiach was getting better but she would prefer it if people explained they were joking. It would make life a lot easier, given her inability to get inference – and sarcasm was way beyond her.

"Droids are... somewhat unappreciated by the Order. In my opinion, anyway." Nara was hasty to add that last part. She was much more wary about mouthing off lately, especially when it came to the Order itself. "Not deliberately, I mean. When so much of our learning and training is based around the Living Force and our place within it, mechanical life takes a bit of a backseat. Add to that, some Knights and Masters don't really think about the technology they're using and you get..." she said, finishing by waving towards the unusued, unloved droids.

Nara did smirk at Kori's plan though. She rolled her eyes playfully as she pushed the BG-unit out from the storeroom, feeling the ball spin with her effort. "You really don't want an astromech serving you drinks, trust me. And don't give the Younglings ideas!" she teased as she stepped back, leaving the broken BG-unit out for them to try and fix. She knew it was probably pretty simple to do, some replacement parts was all that was needed. It probably spoke poorly of the Order that a few burnt out circuits or some corroded link-ups and they just ditched the droid.

As Nara gathered up some tools and parts for them, she heard Delnor's question. "That... is a very good question, padawan. One that I have no idea how to answer. I'd have said memory but you're right, personality quirks can exist after a memory wipe. Maybe the experiences of the droid have an impact on it's circuitry or mainboard? Kinda like how memories and moments can persist in the Force, long after it's happened."

"Hey, you're the one who gave us all that idea," Kori chuckled, knowing that she was in the right: Nara had brought up drink dispensers first. The joking mood stuck, so this time the Zeltron spoke louder, and other trainees could definitely hear that exchange: "But yeah, point taken! Those ball-type droids are probably a bad choice for that. They'd probably spill all the drinks and drop the tray and glasses."

It seemed like Nara wasn't letting Kori off the hook that easy, and would have the Zeltron work on one project or another. She had pushed out a seemingly-functional BG unit and apparently left it in Kori's care. "Right, let's see," the purple-skinned Jedi went for the on/off switch. As expected, the button did nothing. Kori scratched her temple, realizing that it probably wouldn't be as simple as replacing a power cell.

Meanwhile, Fiach asked her a question, to which the Zeltron just shrugged. "I suppose I wouldn't mind a droid of my own. It's just that to get that data, you have to understand all those beeps and twitter." Nykoria admitted her flaw and lack of knowledge with a shrug, as she knelt by the non-functioning robot to remove the casing. "And thanks for the offer. I'll try it myself at first, but will ask you if I end up clueless..." Kori cast a quick glance at Fiach before returning to work: "Which will probably happen, given my experience with droids."

As Delnor found the part on the in the R2 head he started to remove it. Being carful to prevent damage he wondered what that meant for combing droid parts. Though he suspected the R2 unit he would make from all these parts would become a new Being built up from all these parts. But it did make Delnor wonder about people.

He looked at his master and giggled at the the idea of a Droid serving drinking even though he fully knew that the R2 unit came with a drink tray attachment. Then Delnor remembered what he wanted to ask. "Do you think a person memories are what defines them. If you had to remove the memories from a Sith and some how give him knew ones would that even work. Or would the force find a way to undo what ever you have done?"

As Fiach continued to listen and reflect, she was interested how diverse the conversation had become. Growing up, repairing things was her livelihood. No job was too small and she was adept at making things work – using whatever means she could. Her parent’s repair shop was never anyone’s first port of call if they had credits. So most of her work was for people who needed something fixed on a budget. Which invariably called for creativity when it came to working without the prescribed parts. They also received a lot of interest from the underworld – but resisted illegal activity when they were approached. Poor did not equate to desperate in Fiach’s eyes – and that still held true.

So here she was, in her element, surrounded by an abundance of parts and talk varied from the morality of droid-wipes to just how sentient a machine could be.

Fiach was pragmatic on most counts. Droids served a purpose. But, equally, they should be treated with the same approach as a person.

She smiled at Kori’s request to let her begin the work herself and mused that she would have answered the same. So, she began to assemble all the parts she’d most likely need to construct an R2 unit from scratch. Yes, she could repair one of the more complete units on display – but where was the fun in that? Plus, this way, she could test every component as she assembled. This element of control suited the young Jedi – as she first considered what the standard specification for the unit was and then pondered what upgrades made sense.
