It was Alexia who answered his question, adopting an increasingly condescending tone.
Shred our sanity? Austin wasn't entirely sure how you mounted a defence against such a thing. Was the Priestess suggesting Krax's shade could invade their minds again at any moment, without hindrance and inflict serious and lasting harm by doing so? If so, he understood the need to fear this thing, but what on earth could be worth such a risk was lost on him.
Nonetheless, on they went. Alexia led them to a door in the far corner; another that bowed to the force of her powers. Stepping through, Austin just had time to glimpse the purple-runed alter before everything went wrong. Light. Heat. Lightning. The latter lanced past the Lieutenant before he could react, striking one of his men square in the chest and sending him tumbling to the ground. He did not get up.
“You were warned. Priestess.”
It was the voice again, even more resonant than before. Austin tried to raise his pistol, but he found himself caught in an invisible force.; a furious gale that none of them could see, a maelstrom of air that seemed to buffet them, pinning them to the spot. He could see the Priestess up ahead, halted by the same dark power.
They had to break through, but how he did not know. Austin resolved to sheer force of will, driving his arm up one centimetre at a time, straining all the time against the voice in his mind. Finally, after what seemed like an age, the barrel of his weapon drew level and he took aim in the direction of the alter. He doubted a lone blaster bolt would be enough to end this madness, but he had to try something.
Squinting against their enemies grasp, he pulled the trigger.
