Shaye

Excerpt · Biography · Personality · Skills and abilities · Miscellaneous

Shaye is a Sector Ranger, a rookie to be more specific. Originally hailing from her people’s ancestral world of Kiffu, Shaye finds herself far from home and knee-deep in the worst the galaxy has to offer. Brash and abrasive, this spitfire nevertheless considers herself akin to the warriors of her race; unlike the scum she hunts, her code of honour rarely wavers, even when it creates conflict within.

Biography

Born to a large, rowdy family, Shaye was a middle child and has several siblings, all of varying ages. Shouting was common in the family den, and fighting even more regular. It was simply the way. Kiffars are tough people and as soon as youngsters can walk, they’re taught to hold their own. If they get knocked down, they pick themselves up and push right back. Shaye was no different. She’d scrap as best as any of her cousins; when someone gave her grief, she’d throw it right back and spit in their face, much to the amusement of her clansmen. Her father was particularly supportive of this and fostered the trait greatly amongst all his children.

Unlike many Kiffars, who opt for roles within the tribal communities, Shaye’s clan is considered an oddity. Many of the native people spurn intergalactic travel, preferring the seclusion their homeworld provided, but the kinsmen of the Chaska blood were seasoned voyagers; their skills as enforcers and trackers make them especially popular in the bounty hunting profession. It paid well, and added some much-needed excitement to the otherwise hackneyed life of Kiffu; it was, for this reason, Shaye’s parents amicably separated, with her mother preferring the wayward wanderings in the outer galaxy. She’d return home, every so often, regaling her village with epic adventures and combative narratives. This is where Shaye herself decided to share in the same family legacy.

With a stubborn insistence, and her father’s blessing, Shaye accompanied her mother off-world shortly before her coming of age rites; at the foot of her kin, she learned the skills of bounty hunting. Tracking quarries, wrestling them into submission and peddling them off to the paying authorities. But bounty hunting wasn’t as fulfilling as Shaye had hoped. Sometimes the patrons were questionable, and their motives even more so. She never liked it, taking dirty credits for a job, knowing full well the credits came from somewhere worse.

Admittedly (and much to her relief) no matter the price, the Chaska clan never sold themselves as mercenaries and they weren’t lackeys or thugs for hire. Their honour wouldn’t allow it. To hunt and track, there was nothing else. It wasn’t in their nature to involve themselves in the politics of others and again, over time, Shaye would grow to dislike this too. Ignoring something, abstaining from involvement, did not eliminate the problem. The more the young Kiffar saw of the galaxy, the more conflict and chaos she witnessed.

Yet, amongst disorder and bedlam, stood those ready to intervene. They were men and women, unwilling to shy away and avoid the challenge; every so often, Shaye would encounter these people, watch them work and reign in their own sense of justice. They were sector rangers, managing the fallout where others feared to tread.

Never had Shaye been more sure; she wanted to count herself amongst their ranks. With a heartfelt farewell, she broke off from her clansmen and began the next stage of her life as a ranger.

Personality

Rough around the edges, and totally unapologetic, Shaye is a no-nonsense type of woman; typical of a Kiffar, she is headstrong and determined, almost single-minded, especially when in pursuit. Her youth promotes bouts of impulsiveness, even when experience should temper her response. Likely, it’s the thrill she receives from the chase, the adrenaline of stalking prey and the charge of challenge that prompts her to act; she won’t deny taking some pleasure in measuring herself against others, especially in combat. Between talking and fighting, Shaye will always pick the latter. Her father told her how a warrior could learn much from a battling another, from their style and movements. Because of this, Shaye has a keen interest in fighting and regularly spectates at fighting tournaments.

Having several siblings to argue with allowed the varigo to develop a quick, but foul tongued, wit. Many would consider Shaye to be blunt and, at times, downright savage. Things like pleasantries and euphemisms are, in her eyes, a waste of time. Ever practical, this Kiffar is always willing to find a solution to a problem, even if it means using brute force to do so. Her patience only lasts for so long, especially when dealing with troublesome obstructions. Nevertheless, the role she holds is one she respects, one she likens to the enforcers on her homeworld; Shaye takes what she does seriously, and dismisses those who do not.

Despite her social upbringing, Shaye is not the most friendly, even with her fellow rangers. Already, she has developed a preference for solo assignments. Kiffars, being naturally insular, also means Shaye has developed a protected private life. She doesn’t willing divulge information, nor does she feel inclined to share any with anyone. Those too invasive will swiftly find themselves regretting the mistake. This is also partly the reason Shaye does not have traditional facial markings denoting her family's clan; it prevents criminals from identifying her people and specific clan and targetting them in order to get to her.

Skills and abilities

- Wild one - Shaye has been raised to engage with hand to hand combat from an early age. Whilst Kiffars have no specialty in martial arts, their way of life fosters aggression, force, and brute strength. Sparring is common, and in a fight, much is permissible. Shaye is not above crippling as a target or criminal, if it ultimately leads to a successful collar. Admittedly, this has lead to some disciplinary action, but her record is still highly efficient, Training amongst the rangers has tempered the Kiffar's unrefined style, adding skill to the power Esther can muster. She favours grappling and wrestling, using the opponent's weight against them, and buckling joints if needed. Preferring blade to a blaster, Shaye is never without a trusty knife somewhere on her person.

- Technology hater - Shaye reverently despises technology. Perhaps it’s due to her people’s natural, primal way of life, or reasons otherwise undisclosed, Shaye openly dislikes such things as droids and cyber enhancements. Though she carries a blaster and is familiar with handling a rifle, they would not be used unless needed. Shaye also dislikes Coruscant's urban setting, finding its metropolis to be void of any natural life. It is, for this reason, she makes regular camping trips off-world to more rural planets.

- Tracker extraordinaire - The pride of her clan, the legendary psychometry ability allows Shaye brief visions of the past when in physical contact with an object. The force allows Shaye to ‘read’ objects, and gain insight into the past surrounding them. This aids in tracking suspects and criminals greatly, as well as piecing together the sequence of a crime. That being said, Shaye’s connection to the Force is nothing substantial as it has never been explored or trained outside this ability.

- Heritage - Family honour and legacy is at the heart of every Kiffar. If Shaye gives her word, she intends to keep it; slander and insult directed at her blood will be strongly dealt with and traditions aught to be respected. Whilst some may see her people as primitive, Shaye has great pride for her people. The warriors of her family’s past and the ancestors that guide her through present-day trials. Being away from her planet and people for as long as she has, she often feels a degree of homesickness. The small things she remembers and cherishes are what give her some comfort.

- Survivalist - Raised on Kiffu, Shaye is comfortable in natural environments, she can forage and source out water, as well as salvage a shelter. She keeps these skills sharp, regularly going on outings to different planets so that she can experience their wilderness and gain new insight. To an extent, she enjoys hunting but only for necessity and sustenance. To her, trophy hunting and killing for sport is wasteful.

" adding skill to the power Esther can muster "

not sure if a missed reference to an old character of yours /thinking

Everything else looks fine to me

Link to blaster rifle please? And be advised that the blaster write-up would need to say it has a stun function in it, if you wanted one.

Tag me when you are ready for me to look at this again.
