The Man in the Hat

The music was almost too soothing as he sat back and listened, cradled in the arms of the cantina’s armchair while gazing at the stage. A Twi’lek group was enthroned upon it, the one of red skin sat at the piano. She was calm and confident, wearing serenity on her face like a handmade dress, her fingers a fusion of harmony and grace. The song floated with the drumbeats to envelop the cantina like wings around a lost soul. With the background haze of the universe crawling across the cosmos like fingers on synth strings. He allowed his thoughts to drift, watching them float away amid the aimless conversations of patrons.

The floor was filled that night, not of the clubbing caliber out to end their stupor by bending over a bucket, but of the colorful characters looking to convert to a black and white palette and keep things simple. The Avant, classy but not too costly, catered to such folk, some of whom were looking further for an out of the way haven where they could bury their problems and unwind for the evening; somewhere to relax and take in the jazz and the blues, the dark blue cantina hue, a fine cigar and a bottle of wine. And then another. He reached for his drink and tilted the red nectar down his throat, savoring the taste on his lips as he filled the empty wine glass.

“What is peace, Zenke?” He asked his friend. “How does one even begin to define the word? Is it being free from war? Accepting yourself for who you are? Sharing your heart with someone else? This?” He tilted his head to the stage as though it were an empty floor waiting for feet to find it. “One more night at the Avant listening to a silent chorus, like the instruments themselves were singing? Feeling the sun on your face the next morning, smoking cigars from the summit? Is it just one more minute of staring at the stars with no planet in sight?”

He shook his head as though only the universe held such answers. And the universe is not willing to share them. With another sip of his wine, he turned to glimpse Zenke, only to arc a brow with some surprise. There, in the chair at one side of the table, was absolutely nothing. Baymon could only wonder at what time his friend had decided to excuse himself but settled for blinking the thought away.

“Well…” He mumbled to himself. “Perhaps it’s best I share this moment alone.... The stars glow while the shadows grow, the galaxy lights its fires, the years pass like a life in one moment and Baymon Bluevynson never saw it coming.”
