The refugees poured into the makeshift camps set up among the rubble of once great buildings. Every hour more arrived, more hungry mouths, more injured, some bringing their now meagre worldy possessions with them. The event had broken almost everything and had effected everyone on the world. A task force of Jedi had been dispacthed as soon as word had reached them of the disaster and along with a few aid organisations, they began working to help the people of Eriadu rebuild their lives.

For the Jedi part of this was to secure shelter for the growing numbers of displaced. It was decided amonst the Knights present that the safest places were the complex of bunkers that had existed since the time of the Galatic Civil War. As they had been built to withstand planetary bombardments it was assumed that they would be relaitvely intact, and have all the necessercary ameneties that the refugees would need to survive. Three padawans, Rhea Nadal, Fiach Dubh and Somm Orjoz had been chosen to check the nearest complex and report back once it they belived that it was safe and had the vitally important services online.

"This dust is killing me" Somm coughed as he and the other Padawans trudged through one of the frequent dust storms that had been caused by the event. They had been walking for about 20 minutes, and stuck in the dust for about five. "We cant be that far away now, right?" He asked the others.

Eriadu. Fiach, as was becoming common-place now, had done her homework. The planet could trace its history to the earliest era of the Republic – when Valorum presided as Supreme Chancellor. The Core Worlds, desperate for new resources and not above exploiting others transformed Eriadu from just another Outer Rim wilderness to a civilised world.

In Eriadu’s case the resource happened to be lommite ore – essential to the production of transparisteel. But it wasn’t until the fledgling Hydian Way had been routed through Eriadu space that it was firmly placed on the galactic map.

But the price of profits was the planet itself. Amplified operations led to significant growth. Soon, Eriadu’s once lush mountains were stripped of cover, a pall of pollution hung over the major cities, and the standard of living plummeted.

In terms of natural dangers, although it didn’t have indigenous creatures as large as the rancor or as unusual as the sarlacc, it did boast ferocious felines, carnivorous crustaceans, and a species of veermok far more fierce and cunning than others in its primate family. Fiach’s life – although hardly cossetted – had not to date been dangerous. And her training to date had been supervised. So it would no doubt prove a baptism of fire to not only deal with any potential wildlife, but also ensure tempers amongst the planet’s inhabitants remained calm. She wondered if people might prove more deadly than anything they might find lurking in the bunkers.

So, she walked through the dust storm – feeling a little bit of a fraud being described as a Jedi – but at home given the climate, as she wrapped a scarf around the lower half of her face. “It should be close now,” she replied, “as long as we’re walking in the right direction.”

Rhea hadn't known such large-scale planetary destruction was even possible, and when the Jedi had first arrived, she'd been absolutely horrified at the... completeness of it. Some places got it worse then others, of course, but it felt like every inch of the planet had been effected to some degree. She trailed a short ways behind Somm and Fiach, fiddling with some loose cloth from her pack.

She gave Fiach a dreary look as she spoke up, "Don't even joke about that. I'm almost certain we're still headed in the right direction, but..." But if they had gotten turned around, they could be almost anywhere. Between the largely indistinct craggy mountains and the endless swirl of dust, ash and smog, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to assume they had wandered astray at some point.

Rrrrrrip. She tore the cloth in two, and began twisting and tying off the seperate pieces. Another minute more and she had produced two crude bandannas, handing one to Somm. "Here," she offered, before tying the other around her own face, "far from perfect, but it'll at least help keep it from burning your sinuses." She cleared a throat a little, looking around for any sign that they might be approaching their target. "I wonder if old Wilhuff Tarkin ever imagined Jedi would be repurposing these things into refugee shelters for his people." ... "I wonder if he'd have cared."

Somm took the offered bandanna and tied it around his head so that it covered his nose and mouth. "Thanks, my throat feels like a Tatooine desert". He stopped and squinted at the blurred horizon, the dust was making even the solid shapes of the mountains look otherworldly or disappear completely at times.

"He wouldn't have cared" Somm said in reply to Rheas statement "The Empire wouldn't have lifted a finger" He paused "Well, maybe if they knew there were Jedi, but only to hunt them" It was probably a little cynical of him but from the histories he had read about the Empire, their track record wasn't one of helping those in desperate need.

He pointed in front of them as a square shape seemed to materialize out of the dust about five hundred meters away from them before vanishing as a thicker dust blew through . He looked at his companions "That looks promising, I think".

Fiach was used to working alone. Yes, back on her home planet, she’d worked as part of a team, but invariably they worked independently.

Her current adjustment was as much about working with and trusting others as it was to living the life of a Jedi. And unlike home, where those she worked with were her parents, as a Jedi you were assigned partners, sometimes people you didn’t even know.

Rhea and Somm seemed good people for her first ‘solo’ mission and hoped it endured, as any lack of cohesion would affect that mission and ultimately the people they were here to help.

Of course, Fiach hadn’t been joking about getting lost. She didn’t do jokes – at least they weren’t funny when she told them. Plus, she’d had enough experience of navigating in sandstorms to know how even a one-degree misstep could take you a long way from your target, given you had no visible markers.

The mention of Tarkin was one Fiach was unsure of how to respond to. Her galactic and historical knowledge was both very recent (since she’d joined the Order - there was no need for such learning in a repair shop on Klatooine) and entirely book-based. Given she did not favour opinions over facts, she felt ill at ease in expressing any thoughts. So she listened – which she’d come to learn was a skill in and of itself – and added their thoughts to her mental database. Logic said their assumptions were correct, but there was no evidence to the fact that he personally believed in everything the Empire did. Some people, it seemed, gained power through politics and their own values were put aside in the pursuit of promotion.

At the mention of something promising, Fiach squinted. It was square enough to be man-made, which was a good sign. “Only one way to find out,” Fiach shared. “And we’ll know soon enough.” The proximity of the building seemed to quicken her step as she pressed on through the dust.

She nodded in agreement with her two elder padawans, both in regards to the Empire and the vague, angular shape in the distance. It didn't look too far away, though that might just be an optical illusion caused by the poor conditions. She took a few strides forward, pulling herself up a small ledge to try and get a better view, but the dust-choked air soon covered their field of vision again. "Well, it probably is our best shot. Watch your footing, though."

The young woman gestured to the increasingly unstable footing as they continued their trek into the hills. Not the best time or place for someone to twist their leg. "If we're really lucky, maybe this place has a speeder or two stashed away. It'd be better if we didn't have to lead such a large crowd out here on foot." In these conditions, it wasn't hard to imagine a child or elder getting lost or seriously hurt, and that wasn't even counting those who were already injured.

She pushed forward, leaping over some of the more sketchy terrain as she did so, though careful not to go too far ahead and leave the others behind. That was a whole other nightmare, best avoided if possible. Though the distance wasn't that great in theory, the rough terrain slowed their progress some, and the group wouldn't reach the strange object for another ten minutes or so. When they finally got close enough for an unobstructed view, they would find a place out of time.

A massive pair of black doors, stained from the dust storms and the passage of decades, but otherwise solid and seemingly untouched. They seemed to almost perfectly merge with the cliff-face they were built into, as if they'd grown right out of it. Rhea approached the structure gingerly, tracing her fingers along the surface before gently rapping her knuckles against it. "Some kind of durasteel alloy, I think. Probably thick enough to withstand a prolonged siege. That sound like our target?"

"Speeders would be nice" He echoed, they were practical and would make navigating the terrain very simple "I hope they have one of those ATATs" He smiled behind his makeshift mask as they made their way carefully over the more tricky terrain. The closer they got the more they seemed to loom up at them, a huge, unmistakeable statement of intent, of dominance over everything around it.

Somm wrapped his knuckles against the massive doors as well. It made a dull thud that seemed muted by the dust filled air around them. "I'm pretty sure this is what we're looking for" he said "Can either of you see a control panel?" Somm followed the doors left, his hand leaving a trail of clean, black durasteel through the mixed grey/brown of the built up dust.

It didn't take him long to reach the outer edge of the door and the Ferrocrete structure that had been built to protect it.. He reached forward and rubbed the dust covered wall, looking for any kind of controls. He got lucky as his fingers brushed over buttons. Carefully he continued to rub away as much of the dust as he possibly could. "Hey" He shouted behind him hoping the others could hear "I think I found the door mechanism"

Fiach nodded in agreement with the thoughts of her two companions. There were few options other than to see if this was the place and knew instinctively to be wary of her footing. The wind could pick up at any moment and so you needed to be sure of your step on such undulating ground.

And the comments also had her thinking. They were three young people, able-bodied, fully fit and undergoing daily physical training. If they found the trek a challenge, what would the group of civilians make of the journey? Speeders would help a few, an AT-AT was no doubt a joke – but some form of vehicle suitable for transporting many was needed. Maybe an anti-grav sled being pulled behind each speeder? Fiach supposed finding a perfect solution was unlikely and they would no doubt have to fashion something from what was available.

She allowed the thoughts to ruminate as she pressed on and eventually they found their way to the entrance. If this was not the correct place, Fiach would be more than surprised.

“Designed to keep people out,” Fiach said, to nobody in particular. “Which leads to the question, how do we get in?” Her voice was lost on the gusting wind.

No sooner had she said it, than Somm located a control panel, his voice just audible.

“So, does anyone know the likely code, or shall we slice our way in?” Fiach shouted her thoughts, hopeful the others could hear. She was hardly a hacker, but her years of experience taking apart and repairing electrical systems meant she had some skills to bring to the party.

The entire structure was imposing, to say the least. Rhea might have suggested trying to cut through the blast doors with a lightsaber, but she figured that if they were built to keep out an army, they were probably thicker then a lightsaber could possibly penetrate. When the others found the access panel, she rushed over to give it a look. "I mean, I could probably take it apart and we might get in that way... but at the same time, if I screw it up, we might not get in at all. I don't think we've got any way of checking fingerprints on this thing, assuming any are even still there after a century..."

The redhead furrowed her brow, sighing in slight frustration. "We probably coulda planned this out better. I should've thought of this before we left." Of course the Imperials were gonna keep this thing locked, it wasn't a rec-center, it was a military bunker. "I don't suppose either of you has a talent for psychometry?"

Somm shook his head. "No talent in the slightest I'm afraid" He replied. He turned back to the panel and gave it a thump using the side of his fist. A puff off dust came from the panel but nothing happened, He looked sheepishly at Rhea and Fiach and shurugged "It was worth a try."

This was their first hurdle and Somm at least was stumped by it. "Do either of you have a passable knowledge of slicing?" He asked "Knowing my luck with electronics I'd just close the balst doors and we would never get inside" He stepped to one side allowing either one or both of them to get closer to the controls "And if that doesn’t work, we have two lightsabers between us, I'm sure we can find an inventive means to get in." He looked up at the ferrocrete structure "I'll have a look, see if there are any vents or at least something similar. Just in case the worst comes to the worst"

Somm continued to look up at the structure, it seemed taller now. He didn't want their misson to stop this early, to turn back and walk through that storm. He knew that the three of them could do this, they had been chosen for a reason, if the Knights present felt that they could handle this, then handle this they would.

Fiach shook her head at the question posed by Rhea. She was learning about new Force abilities almost daily but if she had any talents in psychometry, they were well hidden. And she was now wary about trying to access the bunker via her own efforts, given the risks the red-headed Apprentice outlined.

And she was disappointed to head Somm was equally bereft of the Force ability and was half-expecting something special to happen when he gave the control panel a hard thump. His suggestion that had been along the lines she had been thinking was a mixed message for Fiach. Clearly they thought alike that it could be the solution, but to fail might mean never gaining access.

After a few moments, Fiach nodded. “I have spent my life to date fixing things. Invariably electronics, things that were broken, had bits missing or…” she gestured to the control panel, “needed to have the security by-passed.” She paused and then hastily added, “Nothing illegal of course, mostly equipment that had died and so the security mechanisms were locked or were the things damaged in the first place. It’s relatively simple actually, you just need to by pass whatever needs the code. It’s simply a device that allows a circuit to be completed only when the correct information is provided — be it a code or a bio-scan. And unlike melting the door, it means we can close it again afterwards. In fact, with a little time, I can re-set the code to whatever we want.”

Again a pause. “I can’t guarantee results of course and sometimes the repair might not look as pretty as it started out, but I’m sure a simple door-code is within my comfort zone, especially one this old. What do you think?”

As she spoke, she removed a small selection of tools from a pocket. “I tell you, Jedi equipment is a lot better than I used to have to work with.”

Her heart sunk slightly as the others confirmed that there'd be no easy way past this. She grinned slightly at the girl as she explained away her skills, "Oh? I've got some skill at it as well, just... for entirely illegal reasons." She examined the panel a bit more closely, shaking her head. "Though that was mostly breaking into private storage or rundown old buildings. This is old, sure, but it's also high-end military security meant to keep out rebels and spies... though I guess the basic principal is the same either way. Give it a shot."

She still agreed with Somm, though, it was best to try as many avenues as possible. She moved away from the panel to let Fi get to work, propping herself up against the ferrocrete frame that surrounded the blast doors. She cupped her hands together, and nodded the Twi'lek male over. "It's a pretty big jump. I'll give you a boost to help you up." She could've gone up instead, of course, she was probably lighter, but if Fi needed help she figured it was best she stay close at hand.

Somm was glad to have Fiach and Rhea along, both having skills that were needed. He assumed Fiach was being modest about her slicing skills, it may have been military, but it was over a century old and may have been affected by the event or the dust. His idea for a second entrance was a bit of a Hail Mary, a last resort in case all other attempts proved fruitless. He raised an eyebrow at Rheas comment about her past illegal activities "I believe you guys can do it. We have the book smarts and the street smarts." He paused before continuing "Plus, if the rebels of the Civil War could break into these, we definitely can"

"Cheers for the boost"
Somm said as he put one foot in Rheas cupped hands. With her help it was much easier to jump up and grasp the edge of the frame. He hauled himself up against the wind and the dust that was still whipping across the landscape, thankful of the mask again. It seemed to be calming down, but there wasn't much difference between a dust storm and no dust storm, just a slight increase in how far you could see.

He leaned over the edge and called down to them "It seems pretty bare up here if you guys get anywhere yell up." He pushed himself back onto his feet and began to search more thoroughly, wiping away the thick layer of dust, searching for any kind of break.

Fiach had maintained the conviction that a Jedi’s connection with the Force was based upon belief. A belief that the Force is to be trusted, implicitly. That, if you trusted it, it would never let you down. The second was a belief that success was inevitable if you had belief. ‘Do or no not, there is no try,’ was a mantra many of their teachers had shared with them.

Rhea’s words and Somm’s concerns had dented her belief in her own abilities. It was nothing to do with them, or their belief in Fiach’s abilities – but rather her own doubts creeping in. She closed her eyes momentarily, connecting to the Force and clearing her thoughts.

Smiling, she glanced from one Padawan to the other before settling on Somm. “OK, if you work on Plan A, Rhea and I can definitely work on Plan A.”

She looked at Rhea. “The cleverer security systems become, the more susceptible to primitive methods they are. This will be hard to crack with software that decodes the password, or looks to bypass biometric scanners. But the security was designed for someone looking to break in surreptitiously. They would not have planned for someone standing here for an hour dismantling the mechanism in plain view.”

At least, that was her hope. So, she placed her tools on the ground in front of them. Not precisely the tools of a thief, they were general fixing utensils and as such, would be ideal for the task in hand. “Now, I’ll prise the mechanism from its housing and we can take a look at what we’re facing.” And with that she carefully removed the panel, exposing many, many wires and circuit boards.

"If we can't get this thing open, we could try using your saber to cut through the roof." She called up to Somm, after helping him up."Assuming the roof isn't thicker then the door, anyway." She moved over to squat next to the other padawan, watching as she dismantled the casing and exposed the inner workings of the panel. They would be greeted by myriad wires, chips and blinking lights. "Well, it's still fully functional, so that's a bonus."

After a small moment to study the interior, Rhea pointed out a few different parts. "Dataport, comlink, alarm..." Working off Fiach's supposition, she fiddled with the latter for a moment before coming to two particular cords, and simply ripped them from the panel. The dimming light on the mechanism suggested it'd lost it's power supply. "Think you were right, Fi. I don't think they expected anyone to be dumb enough to do this right in front of their faces." She brushed off her hands, returning to her full height.

"If you have a tool that lets you bypass that dataport, you should be able to manipulate it enough to get us in."

Somm continued to sift through the dirt, though it was looking more and more likely that there was nothing up here. Luck it seemed was on their side though, at least for the moment. The dust storm was dying out rapidly now, the winds slowing to a far from gentle breeze, but it was a lot softer than the gale that been there earlier. The lull in the wind made it easier to search too.

The search however was still in vain, he wasn't sure how long he had been up there, but it felt like a while. It seemed the imperials had thought of this method of ingress and had either cleverly hidden or put such things as vents in places where none could reach them. Somm walked back over to the edge preparing to jump down as he wondered how the others were coming along with the door.

Fiach nodded as Rhea pointed out the merits and demerits of using a saber to cut through the roof. Hopefully they would have complete success on their part of the plan and they could leave the building intact. Even if they did get in that way, that would not solve how they’d allow the refugees to get inside the building.

The wiring looked complicated and – to a novice at least – was. But if you were used to these things, there were standard wiring protocols. Given the age and origin of the mechanism, Fiach sifted her mental database for clues. Yes, technically she was accessing her memory, but to her it was like a datacube – with information cross-referenced and when she sought something, it seemed to result in an easy recall. She used to think everyone had this ability and latterly assumed this was a Jedi trait. But, apparently, it was A Fiach thing.

She followed her fellow Padawan’s lead and agreed with everything she did. So far, so good. She fished in a pocket and pulled out something she’d picked up from Brahe. It was a micro-probe aka a micro-insertion probe that was a delicate tool used by the Kuati engineers.

Then she removed a small datapad from another pocket and, reaching down to the ground, picked up a diagnostic link-up. She used the micro-probe to connect one end to the mechanism and the other to the datapad.

“Here goes,” she said and tapping a button on the datapd, it lit up, now part of the circuit. She performed a few key strokes on the datapad and declared, “There.”

Except nothing happened. “OK, we’ve successfully bypassed the dataport and I can even re-set the pass-code. But the door should have opened.” She looked at the door, hoping for a delayed reaction. “What have I missed?”

Rhea looked up expectantly at the massive blast doors, expecting some sort of reaction... only to not get one. She looked back at the panel visibly confused for a moment, when she suddenly heard a faint sound. "...do you hear that?" It grew louder still as another joined it.... and then, at last, the sealed doors began to pull themselves open. The problem was evident; it was not a pair of blast doors, but rather, multiple doors. Four, to be precise. And they had begun opening from the inside out. "Wow... good thing we didn't try cutting through that."

Even before they had fully opened, the interior had become evident. Overhead lights flickered to life, shining down on a room nearly as large as the hill which encompassed it. It was like opening a time capsule; most of the place was still very clean, some surfaces even maintaining a mirror-like polish. Several racks near the opening doors held an array of weapons, mostly E-11's, but some long rifles and disassembled repeaters as well. Containers marked with the Imperial insignia adorned the western wall, and a pair of doors and observation room to the north - they likely led further into the bunker.

By far the most attention-grabbing was the eastern portion of the room, however. Crude scaffolding surrounded two AT-ST walkers, and though nowhere near as large as the AT-AT Somm had dreamed of, they towered over the interior of the room and the padawans alike. The doors came to a stop, now fully open, as Rhea made her way inside and removed her makeshift mask. This staging area alone was massive, easily large enough to fit a few hundred or so people comfortably. "It's kriffing huge! I can't believe they just left all this stuff here. Were they just trying to burn credits or something?"

One of the doors at the rear of the room slid open, a GNK-series power droid slowly stumbling through it. "Gooonnnkkk..." it intoned, amicably, before aimlessly wandering off to a corner of the room. Rhea moved past it to examine the two doors; the one the Gonk had come through seemed to lead further into the interior of the shelter, while the other door led to a turbolift.

Somm dangled his legs off the edge of the ferrocrete structure before slipping off and falling to the floor far below. He landed rather gracelessly, having to roll forward as he hit the floor to arrest his momentum. He stood, beating his robes to try and pat out the dust that had turned them from brown to more of grey and turned to investigate the large open space that had been revealed. "Wow" he muttered to himself as he walked in behind Fiach. "This is amazing" he said out loud.

He cast his gaze about the brightly lit room, resting on the two AT-ST walkers that encompassed the eastern wall of the entrance. "Those. Are. Awesome" Somm punctuated each word with growing excitement. He wanted to climb inside one, check out the controls, maybe even attempt to take it outside, but he had a duty and playing in the century old machine of war could wait till the bunker was secure. "They had credits to burn, I mean, they thought it was a good plan to build planet killing weapons. At least we know that it was well spent, the power plant of this place still works" He wandered over towards the weapons racks. He ran a hand over an E-11 which looked as good as new and then crouched, picking up something from the bottom shelf of the rack.

"Now we just have to find a water recycler, make sure there are no automated defences, see if they have any medical supplies that might be miraculously in date and see if anything dug its way int he last one hundred plus years" He turned to his fellow Padawans and pulled down his makeshift mask "Should be pretty easy" He threw a small cylindrical device to Fiach and then to Rhea. They had a white top and bottom with a black rubber banding around the centre to make it easier to grip. "Commlinks" Somm said with a smile "They are definitely not fancy, but they are probably durable" Now armed with the power of old imperial communications they could plan on what to prioritize.

Fiach was patient, but did not expect to have to be so when it came to a door opening.

She heard the noise at the same time that Rhea mentioned it. Initially she wasn’t sure what it was. Maybe some sentinel droid awakened by her efforts to open the door. But finally she realised what the sound was and her smile turned to a beam.

The blonde Padawa refitted the door mechanism and shared the new code with Rhea as her fellow Padawan disappeared inside. Fiach made sure the lock was one-hundred percent working before she followed Rhea. It wouldn’t do to be locked in.

She marvelled at the stores. She was not entirely surprised that the first thing they found were weapons. She suspected the containers would carry more of the same. Her eyes scanned the room and wondered if the might find something that would serve as transport. They had the skills between them to jerry-rig something but needed something to start with.

Fiach considered the AT-STs. Maybe they could mount some form of harness beneath them to carry those too weak to walk? As she thought, she was aware that Rhea was heading further into the bunker and didn’t want to be left behind.

She turned to face Somm. “More than I was expecting, that’s for sure. I’d have settled for an empty room that could house the refugees. A speeder would have been a bonus, but all of this?” she waved her arms around expansively. “And if they have all this, I suspect they’ll have left more practical items — like your water recycler and medical supplies.”
