DESCRIPTION
The RZ-1 A-Wing is a strike starfighter/interceptor originally developed by Kuat Systems Engineering as a successor to the Delta-7 Aethersprite light interceptor used by the Jedi Order immediately before and during the Clone Wars. Light and blisteringly fast, the A-Wing originally took the form of the R-22 Spearhead, which saw only limited production after the Great Jedi Purge. The R-22 prototypes were sold to the planetary defense forces of the planet Tammuz-an; some of these prototypes subsequently fell into the hands of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, who used them as the basis for their own mass-produced version. The RZ-1 A-Wing produced by the Rebel Alliance was lean and deadly. One of the smallest starfighters of its day to still incorporate a hyperdrive and shields, it was also one of the fastest starfighters of its era to boot, able to reach 120 MGLT. For armament, the RZ-1 was equipped with a pair of light laser cannons, as well as a pair of 6-shot concussion missile launchers with a total combined capacity of 12 missiles. The A-Wing lent itself well to the early Rebellion's style of hit-and-fade warfare, using its speed and hyperdrive to hit a target fast and hard before disappearing. In its day, the only Imperial starfighter that could hope to catch the A-Wing was the TIE/IN Interceptor, which lacked its own shields or hyperdrive.
Notably, the A-Wing's laser cannons are mounted in fully rotating barbette mounts; in theory, a pilot could rotate their canons to shoot at targets above, below, ahead or even behind the ship, although doing so on the fly requires a great deal of skill.
The RZ-1 A-Wing served the Alliance into the New Republic era, when it was replaced by the improved RZ-2. In the present, the RZ-1 is actually somewhat rare. Though many exist in museums and military surplus stocks, the type has a reputation for being temperamental; its flight characteristics are twitchy and unforgiving of novice pilots, and its systems require frequent calibration and maintenance. Despite its impressive performance, many pilots do not consider a "classic" A-Wing to be worth the considerable trouble of upkeep.
Due to the nature of their systems, A-Wings reject most common aftermarket upgrades.
LEGALITY
Restricted. RZ-1 A-Wings are starfighters, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.INTENT
To create a standard fast starfighter.RESTRICTIONS
The RZ-1 A-Wing, despite its age, is an eminently capable machine, and a difficult one to get hold of in working condition. A-Wings also cannot be upgraded with aftermarket modifications.
