RP presence

I've been on here for about 14 or so months, but most of my posts aren't RP related. I have three characters, Vatu, Runa, and Monarch (who I never use), and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips as to how to build up a strong RP presence? I want to join a few factions but I have NO idea has to how they work etc.
The whole reason I joined SWRP was because my best friend was discussing it and I absolutely love Star Wars so I thought 'why not'. Best decision I ever made :)
