Although Batuu was relatively out of the way in terms of its location, that didn’t stop it from having its own share of problems. It appeared that yet another local crime lord had stepped out of his boundaries onto the territory of another. The conflict had worsened so badly that it was causing trouble with law enforcement, who were having trouble keeping up with the rising number of gang related homicides and fights breaking out in the streets. It was nothing new for a planet notorious for being a smuggling hub, but this particular crime lord had managed to keep his identity such a secret that he was nicknamed “Enigma” by the local police.

“So that’s why they needed us,” Quin finished, looking up from the briefing being projected above the holotable and meeting Vand’s gaze. He hoped the Padawan wasn’t feeling too nervous— he knew that he would have been at his age. Sometimes, even now that he was a knight, missions felt daunting.

“How are you feeling? I know it was a lot.” He tapped a button to close the briefing, smiling a bit at Vand to hopefully reassure him.

While the information about their mission appeared in the holotable, Vand was reading a book on his datapad. He had already read the information and it was simple in the boy’s opinion. The typical conflict between gangs that plagued backwater planets in the Outer Rim, the half-Nagai wasn’t even sure why the Jedi were necessary to investigate it.

Even if one of the leaders had a fancy nickname, it was no justification for them to bring the Jedi from the other side of the Galaxy. Vand understands that the Order’s mission was to help those in need, but there should be a limit or everyone would abuse their good will. If things continued like that, the next time that someone called the Jedi it would be to clean streets.

Although with how the Order needed desperately to cause a good impression, the boy believed that they could really use something like that. Perhaps by collecting the garbage from a polluted planet, the Jedi could win some support from the Galaxy by showing that they also cared for the environment.

These were desperate times.

I’m good.” Vand said calmly, his blue eyes never leaving his datapad. The half-Nagai was far more interested in reading his book about the importance of Batuu as an important trade hub in the pre-hyperspace period. It was fascinating how this once was a wealthy planet and now ended being a forgotten place on the edge of the Wild Space.

It seemed that the Padawan was far more interested in his datapad. Though he wasn’t sure if the younger man had even been listening, Quin would find out soon enough. At least he didn’t sound scared— he only hoped that he wouldn’t be overconfident either.

“Alright. Let’s get started, then. Remember to keep your saber hidden.” With that, Quin would put on his wanderer robes before gesturing for the Padawan to follow. He’d already contacted the police on their way here and gotten permission to start their own investigation. For reasons of not blowing their cover it wouldn’t be a public one, and to the locals, there were never Jedi here.

Soon he and Vand had arrived on the streets. Despite everything that was going on, the sidewalks were as busy as usual. Beings of all species went to and from where they needed to go. Quin’s eye was on the bank, though, and on the people who came in and out. There had been frequent robberies lately, and he figured that it was a good place to start.

“Looks like it’s pretty quiet for now. We could—”

Just then came the sound of blaster fire. Bright flashes of red lit up the streets as swoop bikes turned the corner, scattering the screaming civilians who tried to flee the scene. They quickly pulled up in front of the bank before a group of masked individuals jumped off and began to force their way inside. Quin’s eyes widened before he turned to Vand again, feeling the adrenaline start to kick in. He had the beginnings of a plan forming in his head, but he wanted to hear what the Padawan had to say first.

“That changes things. What do you think we should do?”

Vand nodded, before finally lowering his datapad. “It’s hidden under my coat.” since he was informed that they were going into an undercover mission, the half-Nagai knew that he would need to maintain his lightsaber hidden. After all, the weapon was the trademark of a Jedi.

When they arrived in the streets, the Padawan sighed and put the datapad inside his bag. While he could continue reading it and walk at the same time, Vand didn’t want to have the risk of colliding against someone. Besides that, there was also the fact that he would need to pay attention to his surroundings. The criminals that they came after could appear at any moment.

As soon as Quin started speaking, Vand saw a group of people running from a nearby street. They seemed to be fleeing from something and the Padawan could feel the panic coming from them. The half-Nagai stopped walking immediately, believing that something was going to happen.

He didn’t need to wait much longer, because soon blasters were being fired while swoop bikes were coming from that same street. It was obvious that the masked people that left the vehicles were going to assault the nearby bank.

After he heard Quin’s question, the Padawan immediately turned to stare at the Knight. While he had the same neutral expression, there was determination on his blue eyes. “We are going to help them, of course.” at this point, he had completely forgot about his desire of continue his reading. Now the only thing that mattered was the defense of these innocent people.

Vand’s answer was exactly what Quin was expecting, and it was what he’d hoped to hear as well. He wouldn’t be able to take on all of them by himself— especially not without revealing their identities. Giving the Padawan a nod, he would gesture for him to follow as he began to walk briskly in the direction of the bank, trying his best to avoid or push through the screaming crowd of beings running in the opposite direction. It wasn’t easy, but pretty soon he was at the bank.

When the last being came scrambling out the doors, Quin would head in first with his hand just hovering over where he was keeping his lightsaber. The sudden transition from the bright sunlight outside to the dark interior blinded him for a moment, but even during that instant he could hear the striking change from a cacophony of yelling to utter silence. Where were the robbers? Where was—

“Vand?” Whether he was with him or not, Quin wasn’t able to tell when he suddenly heard a blaster shot and felt his entire body go limp. He crumpled to the floor, his heart racing but unable to do anything as he saw blurry faces appear above him.

“He doesn’t look like a Jedi.” “You’d figure they’d be smarter.” “You know how they are. Can’t stand seeing a single fly get hurt…”

As they spoke, Quin could feel someone frisking him as well. His heart dropped when they found his lightsaber. When they removed it and ignited it, there was an audible exclamation from one of the men.

“Kriff! That police wasn’t lying. Really is a Jedi… but didn’t he say there were two?”
That was the only relief Quin had, knowing they hadn’t gotten Vand. But how long would it last? “Load ‘im up, and we’ll bring him to the boss.” That was the last he heard before something hard hit his head and he lost his consciousness.

Vand watched while Quin ran through the crowd of panicked people. He sighed, not believing in how reckless the Knight was being at the moment. When the Padawan had said that they should help, he thought that they would first make a plan and not dive in action without any preparation.

Frankly, these Knights are getting worse than the Padawans. He thought, while trying to move through the crowd. The criminals were so successful in spreading panic that even the people of nearby buildings were leaving, making the chaos in the street even worse. Due to that, the half-Nagai ended up losing sight of Quin.

He would only find the Knight some time later, after he was finally able to reach the bank's entrance. It was with zero surprise that Vand saw that Quin was captured by the criminals. Obviously that was going to happen. This is why planning is important. The half-Nagai shook his head while discreetly moving to hide behind a nearby pillar. From here he would have a good sight of what was happening.

The Padawan heard the criminals discussing what to do with Quin and he was already expecting them to kill the Knight. However, in the end they carried the unconscious Jedi away. Vand had no idea what they were planning, since he could only hear the mention of a boss.

Once they had left in their hover bikes, the Padawan left his hiding place. Vand pulled a lollipop from his pocket and while his mouth became full with its sweet strawberry taste, the pale boy contemplated if he should return to the ship and call the Jedi Temple. However, it would leave Quin at the mercy of the criminals. Sighing, he decided to follow them.

He was feeling like the Knight going after their inconsequential Padawan.

A short trip later, the bandits had left town for their base in the mountains. Quin wasn’t able to see it, but they were clearly making no attempt to hide— the imposing citadel towered above the rocky slopes behind it. The only direct way in looked like a stone gate, which was guarded by two guards with blaster rifles in hand. It looked like it used to be a prison, but it was definitely something very different now.

The group of robbers parked their speeders and spoke to the guards for a few seconds. From wherever Vand might have been watching, there was a noticeable change from their earlier demeanor as they straightened up and began to look more alert, looking around for the second Jedi that might have followed. While they did that, the others would basically drag Quin inside, when he slowly began to wake up again.

He opened his eyes and looked behind him to see a long corridor that appeared to lead to a large room at the end. He couldn’t yet make out what it was from just turning his head, but it was definitely brighter than any of the other rooms. The men in front dragging him didn’t seem to notice that he was awake either, which gave him an opportunity. Focusing on his comms, Quin would use the Force to switch it on so that Vand would be able to hear. He was certain that the Padawan hadn’t been captured— he had definitely been more cautious from the beginning. He only hoped that that wouldn’t change if he came after him.

Vand sighed while he continued to follow the bandits that were carrying Quin. To have a chance to not lose them from his sight, the Padawan was forced to expend all the credits that he had with him to buy a hoverbike that was falling apart. He had tried only to rent it, but the guy had said that he was only going to sell it. Without much choice, the half-Nagai became the proud owner of a piece of waste.

When Quin was free, the half-Nagai would force the other to pay him what he expended in this bike. It wasn’t the boy’s fault if the Knight wasn’t careful during missions and acted like a dumb Padawan.

After they left the city, the pale boy started to wonder if they were going to stop at some point or would continue to carry the Knight until they turned around Batuu. If it was the case, his poor bike wasn’t going to survive and he would need to consider Quin as lost. He wondered if that was how the Knights felt when their Padawans got in trouble.

At some point, the bandits had reached a building. The half-Nagai stopped his bike in a nearby bush and watched them. When they entered carrying the Knight, Vand was certain that it was their hiding place. Now he would need to find a way of entering it without needing to fight against the guards.

While he was thinking about it, the Padawan put another candy in his mouth. His lollipop had ended hours ago and the effort that he was doing at the moment would need some more sugar.

It was at this moment that his commlink was activated, making him hear the conversation of the criminals. This could only mean that Quin was still alive. Among the things that he heard the bandits saying was that their boss could use the help of the Jedi. He frowned, not understanding why people like them would want their aide.

However, if it was true, the Padawan could use it to enter that building and save Quin in the process.

When Quin was practically thrown in front of the Twi’lek, he didn’t expect the woman to immediately scold her underlings.

“In case you forgot, the Jedi is our guest. Not a prisoner.” She crossed her arms. The men who carried Quin in promptly glanced at each other before each moving to help him, but one glare in their direction as he got up and dusted himself off deterred them from coming any closer. He’d already been embarrassed by the earlier mishap— he didn’t want it to happen again.

“Some welcome that was,” he muttered before turning to the Twi’lek woman, who merely smiled.

“My apologies. My men can be a little rough around the edges.” She gestured for the men to leave the room before inviting Quin to sit across from her. On their way out, he noticed out of the corner of his eye that they put down his lightsaber on the desk by the door. It was strange for criminals to do, unless…

“We need your help.” The woman brought Quin’s attention back. “And you need ours.” He didn’t know if he liked the sound of that, and he leaned forward slightly.

“Before we get into that, I’d like to know who I’m speaking to first.” His tone might have been a little brusque, but he was still a little cross at himself for ending up in this situation in the first place. In addition to that, he’d lost Vand, and who knew where the Padawan had ended up at this point? He could only hope he’d gone back to contact the fleet or something.

“I think that would be best when both of you are here. Nubis?” The woman spoke into her comms. “Escort the boy in.” With that, she released her finger and once again smiled at Quin, who had shot up from his seat.

“You won’t lay a hand on him!”

“Relax, he’ll be fine. Like I said, we need your help, and if anyone were to hurt him it wouldn’t be my men.” Quin, as much as he didn’t like to admit it, wasn’t in a place to negotiate, so he reluctantly sat back down. He would have to take her word for it. If something happened to Vand though, he wouldn’t forgive himself.

Through the comlink, Vand continued to hear what was being said by Quin and the criminals. When an authoritative female voice said that the Jedi were their guests, the half-Nagai interpreted that it was the boss of that gang. Even if she had confirmed what he had heard about these people needing their help, the Padawan still didn’t trust them.

However, in the end he was forced to make contact with the criminals. As soon as he heard the woman telling someone to escort him inside the building, two men dressed in the typical clothes of a Kage Warrior jumped from the nearby trees and surrounded him. He wanted to face palm for not having used the Force to see if the area around him was clear.

Hey kid, we don’t want a fight, but you already know that.” the Kage gestured to the Padawan’s comlink. “We knew that you were following our guys since you left the city. That biker of yours isn’t the best way of remaining incognito when you are tracking someone.” the half-Nagai regretted even more having spent money on that piece of scrap.

I’ll go with you.” Vand said, his neutral expression always present on his face. However, he was prepared to fight if necessary. The Padawan turned to follow the Kage Warriors inside the building, but suddenly stopped. “But I want my bike to be safe. I spent a good number of credits on that thing and I don’t want it to be stolen.

Once the bike was safe inside the building, Vand was guided to the room of the boss. Inside it was a well dressed Twi’lek, Quin and some other criminals. The Padawan immediately turned to look at the Knight.

Your inconsequential action made me lose the credits that I was saving to buy the complete collection of the History of the Republic. I want a refund.” Vand said with authority in his voice. The criminals around the two Jedi didn’t expect the Padawan to say something like that to his senior and silence remained in the room for a moment.

Seeing Vand walk in safely, even with guards flanking him, put Quin’s racing heart a little more at ease. At least he wasn’t hurt. Now, if they could negotiate a way out of this—

“A refund?” All of a sudden, the room fell silent. Even the twi’lek didn’t have anything to say. For a moment, Quin was speechless. Now was a terrible time to create a rift between them, and worse, make it known to everyone in the room. Trying to keep his voice level though unable to stop himself from frowning slightly, Quin would respond in a low voice to Vand.

“I’ll make sure you’re compensated for it.”

“We certainly will. Care to take a seat?” The initial part earned her a glare from Quin, but the twi’lek appeared unphased and offered the Padawan the empty chair at the table as if she hadn’t seen anything. If he came over, the Kage would hold out a hand and ask for his lightsaber.

“Now that we’re all acquainted, or reacquainted,” the woman glanced between the two, “let’s get back to introducing ourselves. My name is Fenn.”

“Quin.”
He glanced at Vand. The quicker they would be able to get out of here, the better.

I hope so.” Vand said deadly serious, his eyes never leaving Quin. It wasn’t fair that he had to expend the money that he saved for several months because the Knight wasn’t careful and went to fight a bunch of criminals without making a plan. The adults should be careful, not reckless!

Without any choice, the half-Nagai walked toward the seat that was being offered to him. He gave his lightsaber to one of the Kages that had escorted him. While he remained with his neutral expression, the Padawan was annoyed with the fact that he needed to give his weapon for these criminals to hold. He hoped that someone wouldn't steal it.

If it happened, he would once again blame Quin’s recklessness.

Vand.” he said, crossing his arms. Like the Knight, the Padawan also wanted to leave this place as fast as possible. Whatever these criminals wanted to talk with them, he hoped that was important. While they remained here talking with these people, other gangs would still be running around causing havoc.

As soon as the two Jedi introduced themselves, Fenn would move on dismissively.

“Pleasure. I’m sure you’re wondering why I brought you here, though. As I’ve mentioned to Quin, we’re after the same thing. Or rather, person.” She looked at Vand. “You might know him as ‘Enigma’. I know him as a headache and an insufferable scob.” Her tone was impassive, but Quin noticed that her guards were shifting uncomfortably outside the door. He wondered how these talks normally went.

“I know that you were sent here to take him down. I only have one small, additional request.” Quin could see what was coming next, and he shifted back into his chair.

“You want us to kill him?”

“You’re quick.” She nudged one of her bracelets back into place.

“You’ll have to find someone else to do it, then. Jedi only kill in self-defense.” Quin refused to go back on his principles, and he wouldn’t let Vand do it either. As if reading his mind, Fenn turned to the Padawan again.

“Surely you won’t let him make decisions for you, Vand? You know that he’ll just bribe his way out of prison if you arrest him. I’ll even have someone upgrade your bike.” Who did this woman think she was? They weren’t mercenaries.

“No, you won’t. Come on Vand, let’s get out of here.”

Vand was visibly bored with Fenn’s explanation. Why should the Jedi care about the fact that a gang was having problems with another? Their mission here was to stop the Enigma and protect the citizens of Batuu, not become hitmen for a crime boss and fight for her in a turf war.

At least Quin was clever enough to notice the point that Fenn wanted to reach with her explanation. The Knight’s refusal of doing the dirty work for the Twi'lek was exactly what Vand expected from an adult Jedi. Perhaps the Order had a future after all.

When Fenn tried to appeal to Vand, the half-Nagai raised an eyebrow. This Twi’lek was reallystupid if she thought that was going to convince him to kill someone for her with the offer of having his bike improved. The pale boy followed the principles of the Jedi Order, he would never do something that went against it.

Besides, he could have the technician of the Temple look at his bike for free.

While Quin really doesn't take decisions in my name, I need to agree with him. I’ll not be your assassin.” he said, already rising from his seat. "If you want them dead, then you should do it by yourself."

The twi’lek was out of her mind if she thought the Jedi would work for her, and Quin was glad that Vand seemed to be on the same page. He would definitely have to make it up to the Padawan later. Having nothing more to say, he moved toward the exit and didn’t look back.

“Oh, sooner or later you’ll learn to see it from my point of view.” The twi’lek’s voice sounded from behind him. “You’re free to leave. Good luck finding him, though. All I can tell you is that he’s from around here, and he knows his way around.” Quin would glance back and give her a hard look before letting Vand go in front of him as they made their way out. No one tried to stop them— the guards even gave their lightsabers back in addition to Vand’s speeder. The strange thing was, after the two Jedi made their way out and the gates closed behind them, a single shot of blaster went off. Outside though, it sounded like nothing more than a piece of metal falling off a speeder.

“I’m, uh, sorry about before. I should have waited for you,” Quin said to Vand, looking at him apologetically. “You did the right thing, to check first. And thanks for sticking by and coming after me.” He placed a hand around the handle of the speeder before meeting the Padawan’s gaze again. “I’ll make the cost up to you after this mission, and get you that set. No more stupid decisions on my part.” He smiled slightly. “You’re much smarter than I am. Any idea where we should look next?”

Vand rolled his eyes with Fenn’s comment. It was the typical attempt of trying to show that she had privileged information, but would only tell it if they changed their decision. He wondered if the Twi’lek really thought that the Jedi would be so easily convinced.

Since Quin said nothing, the half-Nagai decided that it was his obligation. “Thanks, we’ll discover more.” the Padawan said, while walking out of the room. He didn't even stop to look at Fenn, not wanting to waste their time with more interactions with these criminals. They have an arduous job in front of them.

Once they recovered Vand’s bike, the two Jedi left the building. The pale boy had heard the sound of a blaster shot, but he ignored it. “You should. I was going to call the Temple, but decided to go after you.” the half-Nagai told the Knight, still feeling upset for having spent his credits to save the man.

He shrugged with Quin’s praise. “I only did what was right.” even if he had decided to call the Temple, Vand would have gone after the Knight. The older Jedi could be inconsequential, but he wasn't going to let the other to be killed only because of it.

I hope so! I really wanted those books!” he expected that Quin would pay him the credits that he spent on that bike as soon as possible. “If you do anything stupid again, I’ll call Master Voran. She'll solve your problems.” the Grandmaster probably would tell them to return to the Temple, which wasn’t something bad in the boy’s opinion.

To discover more about the Enigma, we should seek the area where he operates. All gangs have territories, he must have one too.” Vand said, before jumping on his bike. “For that we could interrogate other gangs or ask the local authorities.” turning his vehicle on, the half-Nagai turned to look at the older Jedi. “I see you in the city.

Then he left the Knight behind, while piloting his bike. It wasn’t going to carry both of them, besides Vand was still mad. Quin deserved to walk.

Vand was making some good points, and after he seemed to perk up at the mention of the books Quin was just about to think that he was forgiven. However, when the Padawan suddenly turned his bike around and sped off without him, whipping up a cloud of dust into his face, it turned out he’d set his hopes too high. Left coughing when the dust began to settle, Quin would look indignantly out in the direction Vand had gone.

“Wait, Vand! Come on, this isn’t funny!” he yelled out, running a few steps forward. No response. Realizing what that meant, Quin could only let out a sigh of frustration.

“Was I like that as a Padawan?” he muttered to himself. Surely he wasn’t. Either way, he now had no choice but to either go on foot, or… he eyed the speeders parked in front of the base. Unfortunately, it seemed that the criminals had gotten to them before he did. Just as he was about to head back to borrow one, a group of armed men had already occupied them. They were shouting to one another, and even with the distance between them, Quin could hear a few words. And he didn’t like that “Jedi” was one of them.

What soon became clear was that they were heading out, and heading out fast. Almost as quickly as they’d come out of the building, the criminals were speeding in his direction. Kriff! His heart leaping into his throat as he saw them coming, he got off the path as quickly as he could before finding a temporary hiding spot behind a couple of dead bushes. As the revving of the speeders grew louder, he tensed up, clutching his lightsaber as he prepared to defend himself. However, the group simply zipped by, not even glancing in his direction. It was only when he saw Vand’s speeder going up the next hill that he realized what they were after. Rushing to get up, Quin would make a call to the Padawan as he ran back up to the road. As annoyed as he was, he didn’t want him to get hurt.

“Fenn’s men are after you. Get out as fast as you can!” he was practically shouting into his comms. “They think I’m with you. Lay low as soon as you lose them... I’ll try to catch up.” There was no way he could do that on foot, but he didn’t see any other option.

Vand heard Quin yelling, but had ignored it. This bike was basically a piece of garbage and would never be capable of carrying the two Jedi at the same time. The pale boy already lost money with it, he wasn’t going to end breaking this thing. It would be a total waste of his precious credits.

He was calmly traveling back to the city when his comm link was activated. Vand rolled his eyes, already expecting it to be Quin asking him to come back with the bike. The pale boy felt tempted to ignore the older Jedi, but it would make him look like a petty child. Sighing, the Padawan activated the communication.

What happened?” he asked, with his answer soon came with Quin’s panicked warning. Vand turned briefly, being able to see the criminal’s bikes coming after him. “Of course they weren’t going to accept a simple no.” he said, before speeding up his bike. Since he didn't have any chance against them in the open, the Padawan decided to turn and enter the forest that surrounded the road.

While they tried to follow him through the trees, it proved to be difficult. Thanks to the Force, Vand was able to avoid collisions. However, he felt as if his bike would start to fall apart at any moment. After not hearing the sound of bikes coming after him, the Padawan went toward the city.

Or at least the direction that he thought that would be the city. Vand would soon discover that he had got lost.

The moment he finished the call, Quin would continue down the path at a run. He saw that Vand had turned into the forest and that some of the criminals continued to chase after him. A knot of worry formed in his chest, but he would have to trust that the Padawan could take care of himself. He had earlier. Meanwhile, others from the group of men had gotten off their bikes to go on foot. There were only two of them left with the bikes, and that made it a lot easier for Quin to deal with.

Keeping out of sight, he would wait a few moments as he scanned the area for any threats. Fortunately, there didn’t appear to be many in range— he would just have to act fast. As soon as he was close enough, the man standing closest to him would feel a violent tug on his pistol. It would fly out of hand straight into the plasma of Quin’s lightsaber, splitting it in two. He let out a shout of warning, prompting the other man fired two shots in the Jedi’s direction. After deflecting the bolts, he would aim a Force push at a speeder in front of them, sending it flying into them.

He would take the chance to close his distance with another one of the vehicles, hopping on once he was close enough. As the two men were struggling to get the speeder off of them, Quin would start his own up and take off as fast as he could. This was certainly better than going on foot.

Ignoring the shouts and later the additional sound of blaster fire behind him, Quin would call Vand again as he slowed down outside another section of the woods.

“I got a speeder, so I should be able to catch up when you make it to the city. Are you safe?”

Vand spent some minutes driving his bike through the forest, trying to find the road back to the city. When he couldn’t find it, the half-Nagai stopped near a large tree and sighed. Without any doubt he was lost, having no idea of how to leave this place. He needed help, but wasn’t going to scream for someone. The criminals could still be around here.

Since he had no idea of what he should do, Vand decided to make a pause here in the forest. The Padawan picked a lollipop from his pocket and started to suck it. The pale boy wondered where Quin could be. The last time that he saw the Knight, he was in front of Fenn’s headquarters.

The Padawan refused to rescue the older Jedi if he got caught again.

Speaking of the devil, Vand comm link came to life, announcing that Quin was calling him. “I think that I’m lost.” the half-Nagai said, after removing the lollipop from his mouth. “Can you come find me? I’m near a big tree.” the Padawan could have described the species, but he doubted that the Knight would understand. "It's near a turtle-shaped rock."
