DESCRIPTION

The R1 series is a model of astromech droid once manufactured by Industrial Automaton. One of the company's first astromech products after a centuries-long hiatus from that particular market segment, the R1 was a semi-improvised design, using internal components designed for a more refined but ultimately expensive casing and shoehorning them into the shell of an obsolete reactor drone which had been discontinued by IA some years prior. Though bulky and cumbersome, the R1 proved to be a minor hit, and spawned the popular R series of droids which has endured into the present day. This droid in particular has been affectionately named "RIG".

The R1 is a marked departure from the sleek, compact astromechs most sentients are used to in the present. R1s are hulking machines, nearly 2 meters in height and sheathed in a thick duranium casing. This casing, designed for droids used in starship engine rooms, affords the R1 a great deal of resistance to hard radiation and other environmental hazards, and can even protect it against medium blaster fire in a pinch. The droid moves with the use of a tracked unipod, which can be magnetized in order to adhere to metallic surfaces. Unlike later droids in the R series, the R1 is equipped with an integrated fusion furnace for power, and can supply energy to other droids and systems through a standard power coupling socket. Other than this, the R1 is equipped with a suite of tools and sensors which would be familiar to a modern astromech. They can substitute for a ship's navicomputer, and were among the first astromech droids to fully integrate this capability. They were used aboard many starships, and droid sockets on some antique starfighter hyperdrive sleds were designed to accommodate an R1. They do not fit in most modern sockets, however.

In their time, R1s were considered very capable droids. They did have a few shortcomings, however, most obvious being their bulk, which gave them difficulty moving around aboard some smaller models of starship. Their tracked locomotion system was also a source of problems; it was prone to breakdowns without regular preventative maintenance, and could only move the droid at a slow walking pace. The droid's personality matrix, in contrast to later R-series astromechs, was also considered obstinate and sullen, although owners did concede that the droids knew what they were doing most of the time when it came to navigation and repairs, and that more distinct personalities could emerge if the droid was not subjected to memory wipes.

As RIG is incapable of communicating with Dominus vocally, its use of a commlink and hologram projector are significantly limited, restricting it to receiving commands from its master only and unable to relay reliable information back to him when he has access to a computer.

R1-series astromechs are no longer manufactured by Industrial Automaton, and are not nearly as common as they once were in the Galaxy. Their durable construction and overall reliability has keeps them in service in some places and Dominus' preference for tried-and-tested technology is evident of that.

Additionally, for flavor, Dominus painted RIG's trim to match that of his ship, The Twilight Hour.

LEGALITY

Legal. Astromech droids such as the R1 series are permitted in most regions of the Galaxy.

INTENT

To assist Dominus in astrogation and route-mapping throughout the galaxy, especially the regions of space which are unfamiliar to him.
