He let his hands be distracted with the minor repairs on the ship for several hours, mind lost in the events of the last day. It seemed a bit surreal. He wanted to catch up with Larana, wanted things to be like they were, but he found himself in the back of the ship. Maybe things could never be the same, maybe they shouldn't be.

When he could no longer distract himself with work he had checked in on Larana, finding her passed out in the same position she had been in when she left. It couldn't be comfortable, but it didn't seem to bother her. He pulled a blanket from a storage bin and lay it over her before finding his bunk.

He was quickly sound asleep.

The next thing he knew, he had been thrown out of the bed when the ship lurched hard as a groaning noise coming from the ship's hull. Alarms sounded as red lights flicked through the ship. Kalen pushed himself to his feet, ignoring the dizziness and the trickle of blood coming down the side of his head. He stepped out into the hallway, the alarms louder outside, smoke filling the hallway.

He could hear the sounds of debris pinging off the hull. The ship rocked again as something larger hit. Kalen continued back towards the cockpit. "What happened" he would ask Larana before he even entered.

Outside the viewport was a debris field that the ship had somehow entered into. They had been pulled from hyperspace somehow as well. Lights flashed and alarms buzzed on the ship's console.

Larana was woken rather suddenly, thrown from her chair and into the control panel as their ship lurched forwards without warning. The sharp edge caught her in the side, the pain pulling the air from her lungs and stunning her momentarily. The unfamiliar sound of rock on metal echoed from the hull of the ship, alarms and flashing red lights drowning out any coherent thought.

It took her a few seconds to recover, pulling herself to her feet just as a thick wall of black smoke rolled into the cockpit, obscuring her vision. Larana coughed, but whatever damage had been done to her side, almost forced her back to her knees – it seemed the console had caught her beneath her ribs, but there wasn’t time to assess her injuries.

She waved a hand in front of her face, holding her side with the other to try and subdue the pain as more smoke forced her to choke and cough. It was impossible to see a foot in front of her face, but she could just make out Kalens figure as he approached, quite clearly as confused as she was to their present circumstances.

“I think we hit something. I’m not sure.” Her hands searched the controls to find anything that might disrupt the alarms that wailed through the halls, drowning out her thoughts. Her attention fell on him as he became visible through the smoke, noting the trickle of blood that ran down the side of his face. “Kalen, are you alright?”

A conduit shot sparks near Kalen's face as he entered the cockpit which was already filling with smoke. He reached out a hand and stumbled forward feeling his way towards the pilot's chair. He bumped into her briefly before finding the panel he was looking for. With a couple of button pushes, the smoke was evacuated from the cockpit buying them some breathing room.

He sat down hurriedly in the chair and tried sorting out the flood of data coming in. "This is bad," he responded as Larana finally disabled the alarms. They had hit some sort of gravity disturbance that must have just formed otherwise the ship would have adjusted for it.

They were near a planet, hopefully, it had an atmosphere. "I need to go stabilize the fuel line that was hit. Pilot the ship towards the planet and try and find the least terrible place to crash," he said, already moving. Even if everything went perfectly, they were still going to crash. He would have joked about hoping Larana had improved as a pilot but there wasn't enough time.

He hurried to back, lifting the floor panel and dropping down in the lower part of the ship where all the lines ran through. He coughed as he breathed in smoke. The fire was the pressing danger. If the fuel line ignited they would be just another collection of small debris in the debris cloud they had been dumped into.

Crawling forward, he found the small fire that was spreading quickly. Using one of the extinguishers he smothered the flame. Hopefully, that was the only fire, but he would still need to work quickly if the ship was going to make it down to the surface.

This was life or death; one split-second decision from either of them and they’d become the debris – it made her stomach turn, but panic wouldn’t serve her kindly. Instead, she breathed deeply and slid into the pilots chair, a firm grasp on the controls. Larana didn’t have a lot of confidence in piloting ships, but she did have a strong desire to survive and that would have to be enough.

“Least terrible place for a crash landing. I can do that.” It was more for her own reassurance; she couldn’t glance away from the field of debris they had been tossed into, to see if he had already gone. It didn’t matter, she had her own task to focus on and Kalen had his own. Now, only by working individually, would they overcome this together.

Larana inhaled and then held her breath, regaining control of their ship, though it fought hard against the pull of the large rocks and dense debris that pushed up against their hull. She cursed under her breath, pulling back on the controls with the entire weight of her body to narrowly avoid hitting one of the larger meteors, trapped in the planets orbit.

Twisting and turning, she managed to navigate their ship through the debris without damaging its structure further. There was no time to celebrate though; now on the other side, the planets gravitation pulled them forwards at an alarming rate. Without the trust of their engines due to the damaged fuel line, the two of them would more than crash land – they would be lucky to even survive.

“We’re through the debris.” Came her voice over the comm system, signal cracked and broken. “I can buy us a few minutes before we’re heading full force towards the planets surface. I need some good news, Kalen.” She held back the controls, attempting to slow their pace as much as she could.

He grabbed the extinguisher and tool bag as he moved down the hallway quickly, flashing red emergency lights illuminating the smoke-filled corridor. Kalen jumped down the maintenance hatch and began crawling down the service corridor that ran alongside the fuel lines. Something flashed in front of him, causing him to shield his eyes, the outside of his arm burning as sparks hit it. If anything flashed like that near the ruptured fuel line, there wouldn't be debris large enough to know there had once been a ship here.

He found the break in the fuel line, fire moving down the hallway from the other side. He grabbed spray sealant from the bag and started covering the cracks in the line. It wouldn't hold if the fire reached them but it would buy them some time.

Finishing he switched the extinguisher and tried to knock down the flames before it moved any closer. It was spreading too quickly to be knocked down with a single extinguisher. "That's good." he choked out. "We haven't blown up.....yet." he said trying to convey more lightheartedness that he actually did.

"Need you to do something crazy." he said over the spraying of the extinguisher. "Seal off and vent the lower service corridors," he said in a tone that he hoped wouldn't elicit an argument from the woman. He should survive the minute or so it would take to vent and then re-establish air in the chamber, that is if he could hold on.

The smoke burned in her chest as it continued to pour into the room, forcing her to choke and cough. She used her forearm to cover her nose and mouth, her other hand still on the controls, drawing back as hard as she could to slow their descent, but it wasn't helping. Their pace did not slow and only minutes separated them from the planets surface. Larana could already see the mountain peaks, covered in snow, and dense forests that surrounded them. It would be difficult to find a safe place for a crash landing.

"Need you to do something crazy." He broke her focus, his voice dampened by the sharp hiss of his extinguisher. It was not what she had wanted to hear, but it had become clear that things rarely went the way that they were planned.

"Seal and vent the service cooridors." She repeated back to him, to be sure she hadn't misunderstood his direction.

Larana released the controls, but their pace did not change. It wouldn't take her more than a minute to seal and vent the cooridor, but the smoke was so thick that it slowed her down. She held one hand out, feeling her way through the halls while she used her other hand to hold her robes over her face to try and filter the air.

She found it difficult to breathe, each breath burning in her throat. It burned her eyes too, but she did her best to feel for the vents with them closed, sealing off the cooridor as he had requested. The air that was pushed in, forced the smoke to rise, and Larana dropped to the ground in an effort to catch her breath.

Her knees drawn into her chest, she laid there a moment, coughing up plumes of smoke. Only when she was able to breathe in without coughing, did she choke out a few words.

"Sealed. Vented. We're running out of time, Kalen. What's our next move?"

He took in a deep breath, forcing himself to hold the smoke-tinged air in his lungs as he reached over and wrapped his hands around a pipe. Seconds later the air was violently expelled from the chamber, various tools or other items that weren't bolted down slamming into him as they were pulled out into space. When the chamber finally was filled with air again, Kalen was dazed from the impacts, coughing as he finally let go of his breath.

The fire was out, buying them a bit more time, but that didn't mean they were flying away from the ordeal. The ship had taken heavy damage and it was only a matter of where they were going to crash. The ship would have enough fuel and control for a semi-controlled descent.

"Unless you are seeing something different up there, its time to find a spot to crash that doesn't have a 100% chance of killing us." he said. He finished quickly sealing the fuel line as best he could even as the ship started to shake as it entered the planet's atmosphere. He crawled out of the service tunnel as the ship rattled violently. He made it one of the jump seats in the back of the ships, pulling the restraints down over him just before they impacted the ground.

Everything went black.

Their ship shook as they were pulled violently into the planet’s atmosphere, forcing her to use the walls to steady herself as she made her way back to the controls. Seconds before they would have crashed head on into the mountainside, Larana leveled them out, the sound of metal scraping against rock drowning out all other senses. It was all she could do to direct them to hit a softer surface, cushioning their impact with the trees at the mountains base.

Her heart thundered in her chest, reaching for the restraints to try and strap in before impact, but there wasn’t time. The sound of trees snapping was the last thing she recalled before they collided with the planet’s surface and everything went black.
It must have been hours later that she came to, realizing that her surroundings were now black as well, a single moon castling light onto the mountains that towered over the crash site. It was cold, the wind moaning as it moved through the trees, and she could see her breath.

Larana laid there a moment, tucked under the control panel, too sore to move but she knew that she’d need to find Kalen to be sure that he was okay too. She tried to take a deep breath, but a sharp pain in her ribs caused her to cough instead. Her entire right side was bruised where she had been tossed against the control panel.

“Kalen!” Pulling herself onto her feet, she called out to him, wading through the debris towards the back of the ship.

“Kalen, are you okay?” Larana called out to him again, pressing a hand against the side of her head, realizing that the shoulder of her robes was stained with blood. She winced, fingers tracing the open wound, but there wasn’t time to assess the rest of her injuries – she needed to find Kalen first.

Out the darkness he heard a faint voice like it was down a long tunnel. Words didn't make much sense to him, but the voice was familiar. His mind slowly started to stir from unconsciousness. Larana would find him still in the jump seat, slumped against the restraints.

Kalen groaned slightly as her voice grew louder, his eyes blinking open to find the ship was mostly dark. His memory was fuzzy on the details of their crash. He instinctively moved various parts of his body slowly, checking for anything broken. "Yeah, I think I am alright. You?" he said, feeling the dried blood on the side of his head. The wound there was one of his worst but it was manageable.

"Nice landing." he said, forcing them levity into his voice as he messed with the restraints to get free. As feeling returned to his extremities, he flexed his fingers slightly, feeling the cold for the first time. "You couldn't have crashed on a beach or something." he joked as he pushed himself out of the seat. He could tell she wasn't in great shape either, noting her labored breathing. "You should probably not being moving around. You sure you are alright?" he asked again.

The ship could provide them shelter but they would need to keep warm. He felt the urge to sit back down and sleep, but he forced himself to action. "We need to see what, if anything, still works on this ship." he said.

It didn't take long to figure out that basically nothing was still working. The communications were out, which he was almost relieved, not looking forward to contacting Master Ris saying they had crashed less than a day out. The emergency beacon had been destroyed in the crash. They were out here alone.

He was able to get the sensors on long enough to retrieve what data it had received as they came down. The closest thing to a settlement was several hundred kilometers away. It would be slow going to get there, and even then there was no telling what they would find.

"Well, its not the worst situation we could be in" he finally said sometime later. "But its pretty close.."

Larana let out a relieved sigh, realizing that he was still alive as he stirred in the restraints. He was disoriented at first, but her concerned expression eased with his familiar and sarcastic remarks, which solicited a smile. In his absence, she had missed his spirit -- the one that could find humor in even the most sour of situations.

"I found the least dreadful place for a landing, as you requested." Her tone matched his, giving him a bit of a sarcastic glance. "Perhaps you should have been more specific if you wanted something a bit more tropical."

While he worked to free himself of the restraints, she cleared some of the debris, pushing it to one side as they would need to dig through it later to recover their supplies. It would be an arduous task, but as he checked their communications and other systems, it became apparent that they'd be here for quite a while.

"I'm sure that I'm fine. Just sore. I think I hit the control panel when we landed." Larana lifted her shirt to expose her side, deep bruises spreading from her ribs to her hips and across her abdomen. It looked gruesome, but considering their circumstances, could have been a lot worse. She didn't remember much, but assumed she hadn't been wearing restraints as she'd woken up on the ground.

"I definitely hit the control panel when we landed." She winced and covered the bruises with her shirt, hoping that Kalen wouldn't have noticed them. He would have his own injuries to attend to, and neither of them could afford to rest or recover until they had established shelter, located their supplies, and found a way to keep warm.

The cold wind blew in from the mountains and she pulled her robes further over her shoulders, shivering. "I have a feeling we won't be leaving here for a while."

"I'll make sure I write up instructions for next time." he said with a slight grin before setting off in his task. He was poking around a dead panel when he spotted her lifting her shirt to examine her bruises. He looked down, feeling a pang of awkwardness. Kalen was sure she would try and hide whatever injuries she had, but he supposed he was trying to do the same thing. Perhaps they were both being ridiculous.

"Well, we definitely aren't leaving in this pile of metal." he said still trying to get anything to turn on to give them any more information. "Might as well have a look around outside." he said. "I'll be back." he said already moving towards one of the emergency hatches with a manual release.

As soon as he popped the hatched he was blasted by a cold air that grabbed the air right out of his lungs. It was dark, but he could tell they were in a dense forest. There was a dusting of snow on the ground, but it wasn't currently snowing. Ducking back down, he closed the hatch.

"Its definitely no tropical paradise," he said returning to Larana. "We should probably stick around here for the night. Maybe if we are lucky, someone spotted us coming down and will come." he said knowing that it was a long shot. Even if someone did come there was no guarantee they would be friendly.

It was much colder than she was accustomed to, but Larana was fairly confident they would manage. The mountains and forests were familiar to her, though the flora and fauna might be different than her home on Andara or Ajan Kloss. There would certainly be some trial and errorr, but she held very little doubt about their abilities to adapt and overcome as neither of them were strangers to challenging circumstance.

"I agree." She sighed, wrapping herself in her robes. "There should be enough supplies here to last a few days, which allows us plenty of time to assess the damages. You know much more about ships than I do, so I can set off on foot in the morning and examine the area."

Larana sat down in one of the chairs, sinking into it. Though she wouldn't admit it to him, her body pulsed in pain from her injuries, and she craved a warm bed and blankets. It would likely hurt worse in the morning, her muscles torn and stiff from the impact, but they couldn't sit idle and wait to be rescued -- no one knew where they were.

"Though, I'm not sure how lucky we'd be to have been spotted. Do you even know what planet we're on?"

"I don't." he admitted when she asked what planet they were on. "I could make a pretty reasonable guess if we could get any of the ship's systems up." he said with a shrug. Not that it really mattered if they didn't have communications, which they didn't.

They did have supplies, though if they had to move it would be difficult to carry much of it. As she sat, Kalen could feel twinges of her pain through the Force. They had spent years apart, but the connection was still there. Even in there somewhat dire situation, he felt relieved.

"Here, let me take a look," he said walking over and kneeling beside her chair. "Can't have you laid up because you are trying to downplay your injuries," he said with a smirk. He lightly placed a hand on her side and closed his eyes. Their Master had begun to teach him about healing others through the Force, it was something he had kind of taken quickly too, but he was still pretty new.

He let a slow breath as he extended his senses out through his hand towards her. After a moment his palm started to faintly glow with a dim blue light. He could feel the slight cracks in one of her ribs. As the moments passed, the Force energies would begin to heal the cracks. By the time he finished, sweat beaded on his forehead and he breathed heavily. It took a lot of energy to maintain the level of focus required. She would be sore, and still have pretty major bruising but the worst of her injuries would be better for the time being.

Kalen lowered himself to a sitting position on the floor as he recovered his breath. "Not that you will listen, but you need to take it easy for the next day or two." he said, knowing that it was useless.

"Get some rest. I'll take first watch." he said "and maybe I can figure out where we are." he said knowing that there was little chance of getting anything to work.

"They are only bruises, Kalen. You don't have to do that."
she protested, but when he laid his hand on her side, she recoiled in pain and inhaled sharply. Perhaps they were more than superficial, even if she didn't want to admit it. He wouldn't listen to her though; it was useless to argue with him, as he was equally as stubborn in his own right. In fact, it was probably a miracle that either of them had made it this far in their training, despite their individual contributions.

Larana, with a defeated sigh, watched him in silence. His features were dimly lit by the faint glow emanating from his palm, eyes closed in concentration. In those quiet few moments, she remembered the time they had spent apart and realized how truly grateful she was that he had returned, no matter their present circumstance.

"I don't think we can afford the luxury of taking it easy." she responded, pushing herself out of the chair. Her movements still were stiff, but there was some relief, for which she would need to thank him later.

"You can take first watch, if that's what you want. Though, before either of us can rest, we need to recover some of our supplies, namely blankets." she forced her way across the room, sorting through piles of their belongings that had been dumped in the crash. "The longer we sit here without power in a metal container, the colder it's going to get. I don't know about you, but I don't like the cold."

She paused, as if she'd forgotten something, turning to look over him again. "How is your head, anyway? I can't use the force to heal you, but I can stitch it up if we can find our first aid supplies."

She looked like she moved a bit easier when she finally rose from the chair. He lay his head back against the cold bulkhead of the ship, feeling drained. "Hrm?" he responded when she asked after his head wound. It took him a second to catch back up with the question. "Oh, I am sure its fine." he said as he looked over seeing the line of dried blood down the side of his head. It probably looked way worse than it was, but he had still lost a good amount of blood.

He reached up and felt for the wound, wincing slightly as he touched the cut which could probably use stitches. The prodding caused the wound to start bleeding again slightly. "You know how I feel about needles..." he said finally. There were few things he hater worse than needles of any kind. He finally huffed "but I suppose there is no escaping it this time...fine."

"There should be a medical kit in that cabinet."
he said, pointing to one across the room. The door looked stuck shut, likely bent out of shape in the crash. While she figured out a way to get it open, Kalen leaned back and closed his eyes.

She puzzled over the cabinet door, damaged in the crash. It was so mishapen that she could hardly grasp it and, even then, it took her entire weight and still wouldn't budge. The metal frame left painful indents in her skin, but she continued to pull at it in frustration, cursing beneath her breath. When it still did not open, she released her hold and rubbed her palms on her thigh, defeated.

"I don't suppose that's going to open, then." she said finally, turning back around. He was leaned back, eyes closed, and quite clearly exhausted; they both were. Larana wanted to rest too, but she was far too overwhelmed by their current situation and it was much too cold. The tips of her fingers were frozen and, each breath out, created a fleeting, misty cloud in front of her lips.

"You should rest, Kalen. I will take the first watch instead. I couldn't sleep if I wanted to." she said, trying to sound lighthearted, but sincere.
"I'm going to collect some of our tools and supplies. Perhaps I can get this open and we can address your wounds."

He heard her struggle with the door, but couldn't seem to find the will to open his eyes. The temperature was dropping rapidly, though Kalen didn't much notice. "I'm fine." he muttered as she wondered off.

His mind drifted off, fading in and out of consciousness. Dreams and reality seemed to blur together in his state as he started to mutter things incoherently.

Patches of ice crystals slowly started to form on some of the walls of the ships. Strong gusts of winds actually rocked the ship somewhat as it whistled through breaches in the hull of the ship.

Kalen shivered, his eyes blinking open, unsure what was happening. He sat alone in the darkness, trying to push himself up but slumping down again a moment later.

It did not take long for her hands to go numb, the cold air burning her skin and her lungs witch each breath she took. Larana could see the frost and ice that formed on the walls and the ship as it rocked in the violent gusts of wind. It sounded as though the hatch might cave in, exposing them even further to the unforgiving elements.

She trembled, her robes no longer thick enough to provide warmth. Larana rubbed her hands together, realizing that she would need to forgo her attempts at opening the cabinet and instead focus her remaining energy and finding a way for the both of them to stay warm.

It took her some time to find her way back to the cabin in the dark, stumbling through the halls littered with debris. She carried almost every blanket she could manage to find, her frost bitten fingers almost too numb to carry them.

"Kalen," she called out to him, dropping them in a pile beside him. He didn't respond, so she nudged him, but when he remained slumped against the wall, she quickly realized that something was wrong. Her heart sank into her chest, grabbing his wrist to feel for his pulse, and reaching to drag one of the blankets on top of him.

"Kalen, you've got to wake up. What's wrong?" She nudged him again, reaching for more blankets.

The early morning sun on Ajan Kloss was blinding. Kalen was already drenched in sweat. His new Jedi Master had awoken him before the sun came up and made him run. They came into the clearing where another Padawan was already standing. "Kalen, I want you meet my other Padawan. Both of you will be training together." she said giving them a moment to introduce themselves to one another.

He didn't like this Larana. Why did he had to train alongside another Padawan anyways. Everyone else in their class had gotten their own Jedi Masters. She had them spar shortly after but the fight had been quick, Kalen losing his footing causing him to stumble and be hit by Larana's training blade. He hissed in pain, but his pride was hurt more than anything.

He looked up, seeing her offering him a hand up. Embarrassed, he pushed himself up and looked towards their Master. She wore a scowl as she slowly shook her head at him.

****

Kalen blinked open eyes but didn't immediately focus on the woman standing in front of it. "Why is it so cold?" he asked, somewhat confused as he was pulled back into the present. The wound must of caused at least a minor concussion, coupled with the risky use of the Force it had put him in a dangerous spot.

They huddled under blankets which did help. "Thank you." he said quietly, leaning against her.

The wind whistled through the trees outside, temperatures dropping as the frost turned to ice around them. Larana pulled him close to her, keeping the blankets over him as he declined, drifting in and out of consciousness. In silence, she stared across the darkened room as he leaned against her, unsure of what to do. For the first time in a while, she felt fear and helplessness, but did her best to swallow them.

"I need you to stay here, Kalen." she whispered, gently nudging him awake. "I think with our systems down and without power, it might be safe to start a fire. I will need to contain it, but we need to get you warmed up."

The worry was there in her voice, though she tried to hide it. He seemed weak, slumped up against her and, while she didn't want to move or leave him alone, there was a part of her that wondered if he'd survive the night. There was also the cabinet, twisted and forced shut, that contained their medical supplies; his wound needed to be stitched, but her hands were so numb, she wasn't sure if she could even pry it open.

Larana wrapped him further in the blankets, rubbing her hands together to warm them as she stood up. There ship rocked back and forth in the strong gusts of winds and, what sounded like branches falling from the ice covered trees, rang out against the heavy metal hull. She wondered how bad the storm had gotten and whether or not they'd be able to access the hatch come daylight.

"I'll find a way to warm it up in here. Just hold on for me, okay?"
