"Okay, these are like, cool and all, but I said I wanted to look at old stuff. You know, the literal actually opposite of what you're showing me?" Laila's tongue lashed out at the middle-aged man who'd just finished a long spiel about the store's latest models in guitars and other instruments. To her credit, Laila had stood there patiently for at least a minute, but her patience ran thin after that. The irritation in her voice was clear, and despite being much shorter than him, her tone was condescending and just shy of calling him stupid. "Like, retro stuff? Do you even carry it?"

"Erm, of course! Right this way." The man seemed taken aback by Laila's rude interruption, but she was dressed up like a rich kid and was holding a designer bag at her side, so perhaps he felt it was worth dealing with her attitude if the prospect of scoring commission on whatever she bought was a possibility. "This is our thri- er, retro section! Some of the pieces here are older than my grandpa!"

"Cool, thanks." Laila said dismissively, waving him away as she walked away from him. The store was quite large, but this section was quite small. She could see a variety of old guitars hung up on the wall, an out-of-tune piano (she played a chord to see) with chipped paint, and various other antique items.

"Ugh, do people not even take care of this stuff?" she grumbled under her breath as she inspected a dusty finger she'd just run across the red resin paint on an old guitar. "But for 50 credits... not bad." She could probably get some to restore it! She was sure at least one of the palace butlers knew someone. But it wasn't quite old enough, so she dropped the tag and looked around for something else.

Just as she turned around though, she ran right into someone, causing her to let out a loud Oof! and causing the bag on her arm to slip off her shoulder and fall to the ground.

Heidi had endured yet another disastrous flight—the pilot was fine, but these ships felt like metal boxes of death—but it was all worth it. The shop that a friend recommended was better than she could have imagined.

Back in her old forest, she only had a flute; she'd seen an acoustic guitar here and a small drum there, but they were primitive, just like her flute. Retro, as some would say. And now that she could explore the galaxy beyond her small forest, she decided to see what other instruments she could find! She might come to really like one of them, who knows?

Although she wasn't sure where to begin. Despite the fact that it was the shop of her dreams, she was overwhelmed. There were instruments everywhere she looked, each one distinct from the others. But none of them were what she was looking for; sure, the metallic guitar—it was a guitar, wasn't it?—looked cool and most likely sounded nice, but the last thing she needed was more metal in her life. No, she preferred something made of wood or bones. Kriff, even leather would suffice!

Heidi turned onto her heels, lost in thought about where she'd be able to find an instrument to her liking. Her white dress with blue frills danced in the air, trailed by her tail. But before she could take a step forward, a flash of pink collided with her, causing her to stumble backward.

"Woah!" Heidi blinked a bit dazed, shaking her head twice before focusing on the person who had just run into her. And much to her surprise, it was the cutest girl with horns she had ever seen in her life. It was a species she'd never seen before, almost fitting the stories told around the campfire about demons stealing children in the dead of night. But this wasn't a demon. No, she was far too adorable!

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Heidi quickly apologized before looking down at the floor to see if anything had fallen during their collision. The girl's bag was on the floor, and while she had no idea it was a designer bag—or what a designer bag was in the first place—it was too pretty to just leave in the dust. "Here, let me help!" She quickly knelt on the ground to reach for the bag.

"Yeah, clearly..." Laila grumbled, taking a step back while Heidi knelt down to pick up her bag. The girl immediately apologized so she wasn't going to be a bitch about it or anything, but she certainly was not happy about her new bag being treated to the dust particles on the floor. Gods, who knew how long it'd been since this dump had been cleaned? The carpet was probably hiding dust from when her Ma was a little girl! When Heidi went to hand it back, Laila would all but snatch it back.

"Maybe don't make a habit of standing directly behind people next time?" There was nothing unpassive-aggressive about her words, and the snooty look on Laila's face certainly didn't make her seem any nicer.

The tiefling took a step back to get a better look at the clumsy stranger in front of her. Her scarlet eyes traveled up and down Heidi, clearly and obviously judging, settling the longest on her fluffy tail and her expressive ears. Laila had about four or five inches on her, but from what she could tell, they looked to be about the same age. Her face seemed to relax, and her expression melted from judgemental to something a bit more curious.

"Where'd you get your dress?" It wasn't a true compliment, but it was about as close to one that Heidi would get out of her at the moment. Laila thought it was actually pretty cute, though she wasn't sure if she could be caught dead wearing it.

Okay, the girl was fierce. Much fiercer than she had anticipated. But she couldn't blame her; Heidi would have been annoyed as well if she had run into someone. So, despite the fact that the snatching of the bag irritated her, she quickly pushed it aside, mentally forgiving the girl.

"You are right. I got distracted while looking for instruments." She admitted honestly and warmly, contrasting the passive-aggressiveness and snooty look. Sure, the Tiefling had run into her, but Heidi hadn't been paying attention and was truly clumsy. She didn't mind taking responsibility for her part in the situation.

Heidi felt insecure for a moment when she noticed the Tiefling scanning her with a judging gaze. Was she looking funny? Was it her ears—the girl had been staring at her ears and tails for quite some time—or her boots? But, before the insecurity got out of hand, the Tiefling's entire demeanor seemed to shift. Heidi's attitude shifted as well, her insecurity fading and her usual relaxed smile returning.

"Oh!" She briefly turned her attention to her dress, which had several layers of petticoats to emphasize its shape. "I got it from a local shop when I lived on Elrood. All I know is that it's handmade..." While the seams were made with care and love, it also meant that the dress was slightly too large for her frame. Still, nothing a sash around the waist and a bow at the top couldn't fix!

Heidi's green eyes shifted away from her dress and landed on the girl's outfit and bag. The girl looked absolutely beautiful in it, and it looked to be very... rich and modern. "How about your outfit? You look very pretty!"

"Elrood, where is that?" She didn't think it was an Imperial world. Not that she would know, really. Allegiances were changing a lot, and... well, she didn't really care too much about geography and politics and the sorts. She left that to her big brother. It was the one thing he dealt with that she didn't really want to follow after. She would much rather keep spending her time spending money!

"Oh, it's custom-made," she hummed with a smile, giving Heidi a little spin for show. Her outfit was this cute little light academia piece she'd gotten about a month or so ago. She liked it when she was out by herself since it was cute while also still being easy to wear. Plus, she was a big fan of neutrals on her rosy skin. "Thank you," she responded to the compliment, giving her a tight-lipped sile.

She smiled for real after a second of thought, realizing that Heidi hadn't included any digs in it. No 'it's even even though ....' or 'it looks cute on you, but I would never wear it'.

"Sooo... what'd you come here to look for? Instruments right?" Laila asked, deciding that she would continue to humor a conversation with this girl. Her eyes looked around, noticing all the older instruments surrounding them, then widened with excitement. "OMG! Are you into retro instruments, too?" Her tail swiped to the side, a little happy movement from the tiefling. "Do you play??"

None of her friends were into music outside of the violin or piano lessons their parents 'forced' them into. They thought it was weird Laila and her whole family were like, super into music. She'd never even mentioned that they used to all play together after dinner when she was just a little toddler....

Where was Elrood again? Hm. Heidi looked at the girl for a moment, clearly trying to remember where the planet was. She had seen the map and where Elrood was in relation to other planets, but she didn't really care. But then it clicked! "OH! It's close to Utapau!"

Heidi could only imagine how much money the girl must have spent on her light academic outfit. It looked nothing like the clothes she'd seen at home or in the Jedi temple. The fabric was so ... refined. She noticed how the Tiefling looked almost wary after she gave the genuine compliment, and she was careful with her smile. But only for a split second. Something must have happened because the girl's smile widened. It became genuine. And it was a pretty smile!

"Mhmm! I did!" Heidi returned the girl's smile and followed her gaze to the instruments. She hadn't anticipated the sudden burst of excitement, but it was intoxicating, and her own eyes widened with delight. "Yes! I am! Wait-" Helia reached for her belt, grabbing the holster that held her flute. The holster opened with a few clicks, and Heidi took the flute out before handing it to the girl right away.

It was a pan flute, made entirely of bamboo with a wool band around the middle. It appeared old and dated, but it had been clearly cared for; the bamboo still had a shine to it and was clean. "I play the flute!" She smiled slightly insecurely at the Tiefling. She didn't think playing the flute was the coolest thing in the world, but she loved it anyway. Plus, it helped her so much in her life. "What about you? Do you play an instrument?! What instrument?!"

'Utapau... Utapau...' Yeah, she had no idea where that was. Laila stared blankly at Heidi, blinking thrice in quick succession, indicating that she had no idea where that was. "Probably some backwater world then, huh?" she finally commented, happy to move on to talk of instruments. If she didn't already know about the planet, it probably wasn't worth knowing about.

"Oh." Laila looked down at the old instrument that had been placed in her hands with a sort of curiosity. She turned it over a couple of times, scrutinizing it under her scarlet gaze. She probably wouldn't call this thing retro; it was just old. "This is a weird lookin' flute," she commented, her Bandomeerian accent slipping through for just a moment. Laila didn't even notice. "But I guess it's kinda cool. It reminds me of something my Mee-Maw would've had." Her Ma's Ma was musical, too. Laila didn't remember much of her - she died when Laila was a baby - but she did recall a few of her grandmother's stuff lying around their home on Bandomeer looking like it came fro the same vein as Hedii's pan flute.

But, now that they were on to more important things like what sort of instrument Laila played, the girl's eyes sparkled. She handed Heidi back her old flute as she began to explain in great detail all the instruments she'd learned to play.

"WELL, I play a whole lot of 'em!" The tiefling girl gestured to the old guitars behind her. "I learned how to play guitar from my older brothers. I've been taking violin and cello lessons recently - they're my favorite! - and I, of course, play piano."

Laila unclasped her bag and pulled out her NalPhone (the latest model of course!) to show Heidi a video of her playing the cello. "This is the last piece I learned on the cello," she explained. While watching the video, Heidi would be able to see the ornate designs of castle walls behind the pink tiefling. Wherever the video had taken place was not a typical concert hall (what concert halls had massive stained glass windows and no audience?).

"My family is very musical," she bragged, puffing out her chest. "I get all my brothers' and sisters' hand-me-down instruments!"

Scrutinizing Heidi again, Laila looked between her and the store around them. "So, what kinda instrument are you looking for?"

Despite the fact that she knew her panflute wasn't the most ordinary instrument in the galaxy, she couldn't help but feel insecure as she watched the Tiefling scrutinize it, turning it around and inspecting it. Still, she wasn't going to let the Tiefling's attitude bring her down. So, despite her insecurity, she smiled and nodded. "Yeeehh, a pan-flute!" She paused for a moment, thinking. "I believe it's made of Naboo Bamboo? I'm not sure."

Thankfully, Heidi seemed to re-capture the girl's interest by asking about what she plays, so she carefully tucked her flute back into the holster while listening intently. Of course. The piano. As if it were the most natural thing in the world... Was it? Or was she the odd one out for never having heard of a piano before? Heidi leaned in closer, her ears perking up even more than before. "That's a lot of instruments! Some of those I've never heard of!"

The Tiefling didn't seem to waste any time in grabbing her NalPhone and showcasing her talent. And boy, did the sight take Heidi's breath away. She wasn't from a big city or a big planet, but she knew these were either church or castle walls. She'd seen a few, though the majority were ruined. Still. And the Tiefling's abilities—they were incredible! She played like an angel! "You are amazing..." Heidi's voice was softer than usual, but her awe was as clear as day. "And so, so talented!"

"It's incredible how you have a family who supports you so much and gives you their instruments."
Heidi smiled kindly at the Tiefling. "They sound very sweet!"

"OH! Wait!"
Heidi's eyes brightened as she remembered something. "If you want, I believe there's a recording of me as well?" She didn't wait for an answer because, like the Tiefling, she was too excited. So she grabbed her own datapad, an old model from an unknown brand. She'd been playing with the datapad for a few weeks now, so it didn't take her long to find the video, although she was still tapping like a grandma. Excitedly, with her ears perked up and her tail swooshing around, she showed the Tiefling. It was a bystander in a small crowd who recorded and uploaded the video, which showed the girl dancing around a fire while playing the flute and clearly having fun.

She looked up at the Tiefling after showing the video, pondering the question. "Hmm..." Her large green eyes darted to the wall of instruments. "I think an acoustic guitar of sorts?" Heidi shrugged slightly. "I'm not sure. So many of these are new to me. How about you? What kinds of instruments are you looking for?! A piano?"

Laila beamed at Heidi's compliments, soaking in the words she knew were coming after she showed the furry-tailed girl the video. Everyone always complimented her. She loved it! "Hehe, thank you," she giggled. "I love my family. They're awesome." She just wished she could see more of them more often. Before, when Altair wasn't king, even her adult siblings came around more often to visit. Now, after Altair had asked them all to lay low, Laila only really ever saw her family living on Eiattu.

"Oh! Show me!" Laila watched as Heidi struggled with her datapad, and was about to ask if she wanted help when the girl finally got it pulled up. With widened eyes and raised brows, Laila watched the grainy video of what looked like Heidi playing the flute while prancing about a bonfire. "Damn, you can play while running around like that?" Laila looked back over at Heidi, mildly impressed.

The tiefling took a step back to look around them as Heidi answered her question and asked one of her own. Laila wasn't really looking for anything in particular. But she would be happy to talk about herself anyways.

"Something really retro, ya know?" she began, gesturing toward the guitar she'd looked at before with a mixture of disinterest and mild disgust on her face. "Like, this one is close but its so clearly been given a modern makeover, and whoever owned it last really needs a lesson on how to maintain instruments." She pointed a manicured finger at a couple of scratches and a string that was mismatched in color. "Either that or the shop owner here clearly doesn't know their stuff."

Laila began to walk forward down the isle, scrutinizing each and every guitar until her eyes widened and she abruptly spun around to face Heidi, her hands splayed out toward her target. "THIS ONE- this is a great example of a retro guitar."

It was cherry red, shiny as hell, and was about as stripped down and plain as an electric guitar could get. There were no modern amenities like an automatic tuner or tune corrector. It was pure retro, baby.

"Oo, pricey," she cooed as she dropped the tag out of her hands. "Perfect."

While Laila beamed at the compliments, Helia was far quieter at the Tiefling's impressed reaction, her cheeks turning an apple red and her lips curled into a smile. "Mmhmm, thank you. It did take a lot of practice; I couldn't finish a single song for the first few years." Even now she struggled; there were songs that demanded too much air from her lungs, and those she could only play while standing still.

Hearing the Tiefling talk about retro, or actual retro, was fascinating. Heidi realized she had no idea what any of this was about, but she noticed the difference in the string or the scratches in the metal and that's what she held onto. "Oohh, I see!" She nodded several times. "You are right. That one is really not well maintained." She was a firm believer that you could only perform the best music if you loved your instrument, and you love your instrument by taking care of it. It was the only reason her flute looked as good as it did.

Heidi blinked for a second as a result of the sudden turnaround and raised voice. But, after that second, she followed her gesture, spotting the cherry red guiter. Although it was a guitar, it was unlike any other she had ever seen. But it was close enough, thanks to the lack of modern amenities or fancy metals. "Oeehhh..." Heidi whispered, her ears perking up. "It'd look so pretty with your eyes!"

Those ears instantly dropped when the Tiefling mentioned how expensive it was. Wait. Was everything in the store expensive? Heidi frowned as she grabbed a random tag and turned it around to reveal the price. And it was more money than she'd ever made in her entire life. She chewed the inside of her cheek as she checked two more tags. "Hm. One moment!" She smiled at the Tiefling before turning her attention to the shop owner.

"Pardon me, Sir?" She asked sweetly. "Do you happen to have any less expensive retro instruments?I have some money saved up, but—" "Oh, no, here we go again." The shop owner cut her off right away, staring at both of the girls with a critical expression on his face. "Two kids looking for a discount, aren't you? I'm done with you all! Why are you coming here if you can't afford it?!" The man approached them, huffing visibly annoyed.

Laila busied herself with a more thorough investigation of the guitar while Heidi went off to ask the shop owner something. She wasn't really all that concerned about what Heidi was doing up until the point when she heard a stern 'two kids looking for a discount'. The look on her face as she spun around was confusion, but it quickly turned into a look of dismay when she saw that he was speaking to the both of them.

"Discount?" she repeated with nothing but disbelief in her voice. "Me? Are you shitting yourself?" Laila took several steps to reach Heidi and the shop owner, her brows furrowed forward and creases forming on her nose as irritation sprang onto her face. She took a half step in front of the girl, as if to block her slightly from the man.

"If I was looking for a discount, it would be because of the absolutely abysmal condition in which you keep your instruments, and NOT because I don't have the money!" She threw her hands down in disbelief, then immediately singled out another shopper in the store. "Can you believe this man is- "

"I'm going to need you kids to leave," the owner said sternly, gesturing toward the door. There was a bit of red in his face, like he too was getting angry.

"Do you know who I am?" Laila said, exasperated and offended. "Do you know who my brother is? You know what! I bet its because I'm a tief-"

"PLEASE LEAVE!"

"Ugh! FINE!" Laila grabbed Heidi's wrist with one hand and gripped the handle of her purse with the other as she began to angrily make her way toward the exit, dragging her new friend along. "We'll go spend our money, elsewhere ASSHOLE!"

Laila seemed completely unfazed by the scene she'd just made in the store, but once the two of them were outside, she finally let out a prolonged huff that seemed to cool her down at least a little bit. She looked at Heidi, irritated, then back at the store, then back at Heidi. Slowly, that irritation turned into a smile with a little edge to it. The girl clearly had an idea.

"What an asshole," she repeated, laughing slightly as she fished her credit card from her purse. She held it between her index and middle fingers, displaying the thick aluminum in the air. "I say we make him regret kicking us out..."

Was it time for a shopping spree?

Laila thought it was a pretty good time for a shopping spree.

Heidi flinched at the shopkeeper. With her ears back and her head bowed, she stood motionless. She was about to take a few steps back and apologize when the pink Tiefling suddenly stepped in front of her and began chewing the man out. Heidi's eyes widened, her gaze fixed on the back of the girl's head. For so many years she's wandered the surface of a planet on her own, she's always solved problems on her own. And now, for the first time in her life, someone stepped in and, in some ways, protected her.

The Tiefling grabbed the near-human by the wrist and dragged her out of the shop, but she didn't resist. She just followed, a little dazed by what had just happened. It wasn't until the fresh air outside reached her lungs and the sound of the Tiefling's huff reached her ears that Heidi snapped out of it."You... you were so cool- holy netherrealm!" She took a step forward, her eyes wide with admiration. "And you're right. He was an absolute... asshole!"

Heidi's green gaze was drawn to the girl's credit card. But the shopping spree had already begun before she could object. She had no room to say that she had little money because the Tiefling was obviously not having ANY of it. And so Heidi would follow the pink-haired girl through the shopping district, gazing through the windows with delight and excitement.

"WAIT!" She yelled out and dashed towards the next window they passed. It was a shoe store. She looked excitedly inside the store for a moment before turning around to face the Tiefling. "Can we look for some shoes?! I still need new shoes for stage performances." She lowered her gaze to her leather boots. They were well maintained, but no amount of cleaning could hide the look of weathered leather. "These are getting old. They are effective! But... I need something nice for a show, you know?"

"Shoes?" Heidi grabbed Laila's attention, causing the tiefling to come to halt and pivot to see what the girl was excitedly pointing at. The bushy-tailed girl went off on some ranty explanation, but Laila was hardly listening. She'd already made up her mind. "Yeah! Let's do it!" she exclaimed, interrupting the end of Heidi's sentence as she grabbed the girl's wrist and drug her into the store.

Inside, shoes of all kinds covered the walls and displays all across the store. Laila was immediately drawn to a pair of heart-shaped, pink platform boots, a quiet "Ooo!" cooing from her lips. Her perfectly manicured nails caressed the shiny pleather, and she almost forgot she'd come in to shop with her new friend.

"Oh! What's your shoe size?" Laila rapidly and suddenly pivoted around, facing Heidi once again as her attention jumped to her. "And what's your favorite color? Did I ask you that already?" Laila's scarlet eyes immediately began searching for someone she thought would suit the girl. She spotted a pair of flowery platform boots nearby, and she instinctively took a few steps toward them before she stopped. 'No....' Heidi didn't seem like a platform kind of girl. "Mmmm, no... these are too..." Artsy? Fashionable? Laila just wasn't sure if they were Heidi. She kind of liked them though. She'd save them for later.

"OOH! What about THESE?" she asked, picking up and displaying another pair of boots to the girl. "They're like, flowery AND country! AND practical!" Though she'd love to get Heidi a pair of heels, these could come first.

When Laila grabbed Heidi's wrist and dragged her into the store, Heidi let out an excited giggle. She'd never been to a shoe store before, only to stores that also happened to sell shoes. So the girl looked around, her eyes wide open. There were shoes in every color of the rainbow everywhere. One was more lovely than the other. And higher. Dear Force, some of the heels seemed dangerous. Thankfully the Tiefling didn't seem overwhelmed, so Heidi followed her.

Laila seemed to be drawn to a pair of pink boots with the highest heels she'd ever seen. But, credit where credit is due, they were ADORABLE and would look great on Laila. But before she could ask the girl if she wanted those, Laila turned around and started asking for her shoe size. "Uhmm. I believe it's a size five." Heidi frowned and lifted her left leg, exposing her sole. She gave it a quick glance, noticing the number before nodding. "Five!" And her favorite color? Hmm. That was a difficult one. She clearly considered it before smiling. "Yellow, with blue and green sharing second place!"

Heidi's gaze was drawn to Laila's flowery platform boots. They were lovely, and the colors and patterns were right up her alley. But it was perhaps a little too... closed off and modern for a performance, especially in comparison to her wardrobe. So Heidi nodded when Laila mused that it wasn't... well, she didn't finish her sentence, but she was correct either way. But then Laila showed her another pair of boots, causing Heidi to yelp. "OH!" She took a step closer, her eyes widening.

They weren't what she was looking for in terms of performance shoes, but they were almost some of the most beautiful shoes she'd ever seen. Almost. "Oh my lord, they are so lovely... I want to marry those. But wait a minute-" She quickly looked around for other color options and came across the same boot but with a yellow flower instead of a red flower. She picked them up and showed them to Laila with a bright smile and her ears perked up into the sky. "I think that looks better with my dress! What do you think?"

With the boots in her arms, she began to hum as she looked around. "Are heels hard to walk in?" She asked, almost cautiously. "I've always seen girls and some men wearing high heels. I've always wanted to give them a shot, but they seem so dangerous." She turned around to face Laila with a serious expression on her face. "You wanted those pink boots, didn't you? Speaking of which, you should get those! You'd look even more dazzling in them than you already do. BUT. That means you can walk in heels! Would you mind showing me?!"

"Oh! Yeah, they do!" They matched perfectly! Giddy, Laila began to look around for shoes for herself when Heidi popped another question.

"Are they hard? No! Not at all!" While some were harder than others, particularly those with very small heels, she'd never found anything of them particularly difficult. Uncomfortable yes, but beauty was pain after all! That's what her friends told her at least. "It's just like walking in a regular shoe, or on your tippy-toes!" she further explained as she pulled a pair of pink butterfly heels from the shelf. Quickly she removed her own shoes and put them on.

"But with ones like these with thin heels, you just put your weight on your toes!" To demonstrate Laila began strutting down the aisle of the store, eliciting polite claps from the attendants as she assumed an exaggerated supermodel walk. Grinning ear to ear - she loved attention - Laila strutted back and began to look around for a pair for Heidi to try on.

"Here! Try these ones!" She reached for a pair of heels with a bit of a platform but a much thicker heel. She figured they'd be easier to walk in. "Don't worry about the platform! It's just weight on your feet. It's actually super easy!"
