Supreme Chancellor Emil Ro was nested in the depths of the New Republic Senate Building, but his face was broadcasting on an encrypted channel lightyears away on the bridge of the Starhawk III-class battleship Nightbringer. The Nightbringer was one of eight Starhawks in the New Republic’s Seventh Fleet, and in between them were Nebulon-D frigates escorting Republic Tapani-class cruisers, as well as an old Imperial-era Interdictor-class Star Destroyer. The fleet was part of Emil’s plan to put together a response team should the Sith ever make a move that required one. That time had come at last.

The fleet dropped out of lightspeed above Denon in the Denon system of the Inner Rim. Sith territory, so close to the New Republic. At once, as if the ships were dancers responding to choreographed moves, the fleet spread out, blocking any chance for traffic to access or leave the planet. They ignored attempts to establish contact. This was not going to be a negotiable visit. This was retaliation. The genocide of Firrerre could not go without a response. The Sith had to know they could not move as they liked in the galaxy without consequences.

Chancellor,” Grand Admiral Brum said into the hologram beaming from Coruscant. “The fleet is in position and awaiting your orders.

Very good, Grand Admiral,” Emil said. The room around him was deathly silent. Everyone knew what was about to happen. “You have your orders. Just the military targets and important communication satellites. After that, maintain the blockade. Not one ship is to get on or off Denon unless I say so. Am I perfectly clear?

Crystal, sir. We will begin at once.

And so they did. Fire rained down on Denon as military installations and major communication satellites were reduced to smoldering rubble. The attack was as quick as it was brutal, and by the time it was done, not only did columns of smoke rise high into Denon’s atmosphere, but there was no chance of getting a message off-world. The Imperial Interdictor used the silence after the attack to engage its interdiction fields. As of that moment, Denon was officially cut off from the Sith—cut off from the galaxy. And a New Iron Blockade was formed.

Emil Ro reclined back into his seat. He didn’t feel satisfaction for what he’d done, but he didn’t feel regret either. Instead, a wave of coldness penetrated him, though there was no draft in the room and the whir of so many machines should be making him hot instead. It’s your anger, something within him said, though he didn’t know why he thought so. He crushed the thought with a clenched fist, blissfully unaware that the action had crushed a nearby pen-holder.

The deed had gone unnoticed by most of his staff, who were too focused on monitoring the situation over Denon. But Joost, just a political aide, and standing silently in the back, had seen the whole thing. He eyed the Chancellor, then the container. Emil had not been the same since he met with that Jedi. Something in him had changed then; and Joost wasn’t sure he liked where that change was taking him.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"And entire fleet Senator, of New Republic ships just opened fire on Denon."

"But that's our territory! How dare they. It is our responsibility to get rid of the Sith on that world, not an opportunity for this warmongering Chancellor to redraw the map."

Starros was flabbergasted at the staggering arrogance of the Chancellor. To launch an attack on a world that was treaty-bound to reside within Free World's Alliance space? It beggared belief. "Open a link to Chancellor Ro, now."

He waited a few moments before the link was opened, and spoke.

"Chancellor, I must protest. Denon is, by rights, a Free World, not a member of the New Republic. You have no right to carry this action out. Furthermore, you do not have the right to unilaterally declare war, unless you have been awarded such powers by your Senate? It seems you are not content with trying to take the protection offered by the Sector Rangers from us, that now you have to literally invade a world that is not, nor ever has been, de jure part of the New Republic. You must stop this invasion at once."

"Furthermore, I will contact the Speaker of the Galactic Senate - where I expect you to explain your actions, and to explain exactly why you believe you have the right to declare war, without putting such an action to a vote first. Democracy, Chancellor, is not something you should so coldly disregard."

The blinker on Emil's private comm channel lit up, notifying of an official diplomatic communication. The Chancellor answered the call, watching stoically as Senator Starros of Lothal admonished him for the actions over Denon. The coldness was stronger than ever in his chest, numbing him and dulling the usually flippant manner with which he usually responded to such attacks. When the Senator was done, Emil looked up into the camera, eyes glittering in blue holographic light.

"Denon sits on the edge of New Republic territory, Senator," Emil reminded him sharply. "If the Sith decide to invade us next, they will use Denon as a staging ground. If you object to my decision, then you should blame your Alliance for not having retaken the planet long ago. As it stands, Denon is Sith territory and will be treated as such." He shifted slightly, shadowing his face even to the holographic camera. "As for the Senate, go ahead, call upon the Speaker. I'll answer whatever questions you ask when I'm done winning your war for you."

And with that, the Chancellor cut the channel, returning to monitoring the situation at hand. @Nor'baal

“Councilor Voran.” The com rang in her private quarters. “You need to come to the bridge.” Alex groaned, rubbed the sleep from her eyes, and stood. She’d slept for all of thirty minutes…maybe. Reflexively, her mind reached for the Force. The wound in the Outer Rim still pulsed against her senses. Whatever newest disaster struck was not on that scale. She would have felt it. Alex took a deep breath and immersed herself in the Force. Exhaustion flew away, the dark circles disappeared, the lines on her forehead resolving. Run down, dragging, sleepless Alex was gone…replaced by stoic…regal…Councilor Alexandria Thayless Voran.

One more deep breath.

Her quarters were a short walk to the bridge. She oddly found the organized chaos comforting. A fleet was on the view screens again. She did not recognize the ships. It was not the same feed as the Sith war fleet. “Captain?” She gestured generally at read outs. “It’s the 7th fleet, ma’am.” Her mind moved sluggishly despite the Force propping her up. “The Sith name their fleets?” Confusion spiked in the Force. She knew in that moment her mistake. “A Republic Fleet?” The Mon Calamari Captain nodded, directing her back to the view screens. “It just opened fire over Denon. It appears military targets only but…” Alex finished the sentence for him. “Denon is too populace dense.” This was not what she expected. She wanted liberation not annihilation. Were they no better than the Sith? Was she a hypocrite? This was the price of winning the war. Can’t you pay it, Alex?

The MC80 orbited Coruscant, having arrived a short time ago. Her mind raced through possibilities. “I need to be taken down to the surface.” The Captain nodded. “Of course, Master Voran. We’ll have a shuttle prepared. Where shall we land?” Her face hardened. “The Senate Building.” As they walked towards the hangar, Alex flipped on her com. “Emil, I need to see you.” (@Mockingjay) She needed to understand why. Did she truly disagree? She was not sure.

After the attack on Firrerre, Naeva Rue had been somewhat busy behind the scenes. The fact of the matter was that the Free Worlds were far from united under a single banner. In her opinion an address of some kind without action ready and in place was often not the best policy. Naeva wasn't fond of grand speeches that meant nothing.

While the ISC leadership was set up so they could respond quickly, the Free Worlds had a thousand different opinions and agendas to sort through. Aid would be sent, but without much fanfare. But when a New Republic fleet had dropped from lightspeed above Denon and bombarded ground targets?

That got her moving a little faster. Her message wasn't sent privately to Chancellor Emil Ro. The Prime Minister broadcast directly to the holonet in an Emergency Address as well as to the Chancellor's office.

"People of the Galaxy and citizens of the Free Worlds Alliance. Right now, as I speak, a New Republic fleet has arrived in orbit of Sith-occupied Denon." Her eyes were sharp and focused but the rest of her expression was difficult to discern.

"With it, Chancellor Ro is trying his very best to live up to the tabloids' expectations." Namely the many comparisons to Emperor Palpatine. "The fleet has fired on Denon. We don't yet know the death toll from this attack on our citizens, nor if this has any connection to the Sith bombardment of Firrerre." Naeva Rue paused for a moment. No one had asked the question of connection, and she herself didn't know either way. But now it was something people would be thinking about.

"By attacking an occupied Free World planet the New Republic has massively overstepped their bounds and is in gross violation of the trust and principles set in place by the formation of the Galactic Senate. A blockade of Denon is no different from holding it and its people hostage, no matter what reasons you use to justify your actions." The Prime Minister glared directly into the camera, now with a small, angry frown, an expression those who saw her in the Senate rarely observed.

"The Free Worlds Alliance is formally calling a meeting of the Galactic Senate to protest your attack and determine how to handle the aftermath of it and the burning of Firrerre. We will not stand for this. Our people are not pieces in a Dejarik game to be used and discarded for your own ends, Chancellor Ro. For this, you will answer."

Then the message cut out. Senator Cal Starros' call to the Senate Speaker would be followed by another from the Prime Minister's office.

"He did what?" Sibyl yelled, furious. She was relaxing today, reading a holobook in the balcony of her bedroom. With Tristodd away helping in the Republic relief efforts in Firrerre, there was no one to annoy her. The Senator was even daydreaming about the possibility of her aide disappearing among the debris of the planet. However, her relaxation was interrupted by her protocol droid, Dongwa, who was bringing worrying news.

"Chancellor Ro ordered the 7th Fleet to bombard military points in the Sith-occupied Denon. The fleet also destroyed several satellites and made a blockade over the planet." the droid said, looking to the Senator "Prime Minister Naeva Rue of the FWA made an Emergency Address calling for a meeting of the Galactic Senate to discuss this situation."

" What was this idiot thinking?" Sibyl continued to yell, she had never shown such anger before. What Emil Ro did was stupid. Before being conquered by the Sith, Denon was a member of the FWA, bombarding it would mean killing FWA citizens. She started to think that the Chancellor lost his mind. In her fury, the Senator screamed and threw her holobook from the balcony.

The Senator of Brentaal knew that this situation was dangerous and perhaps a prelude to a war between the NR and the FWA. With Brentaal in a strategic position in the intersection of two of the galaxy's major hyperlanes, it's conquest would be a prize for the Alliance if they decided to invade the core. She needed to do something to save her homeworld, and herself, in the case of a possible war.

"Dongwa, call Caledan Brentioch. Tell him that we need to have an emergency meeting of the Brentaal Houses." the gears in her mind started to spin, perhaps it was time for the Plan B. "Explain to him what happened in Denon and that we need to discuss the future of Brentaal."

"Yes, my lady." her droid said, running to contact the leader of House Brentioch. Meanwhile Sibyl started to think in how she would approach the ISC if the noble houses decided to follow her idea.

Having spent most of his life living in the demonic-looking and remote forests of Dathomir, it only made sense that city-planets attracted Cinere. There was something seemingly so impossible to him about billions of people living so closely together that he could not help but be fascinated as he watched the skyline from the huge window of his apartment on Dromund Kaas. Coruscant certaintly had its charm, but being Republic territory, Cin could never truly feel comfortable on the ecunomopolis, lower levels or not. The Sith world, however, felt much more comfortable, partly due to the fact that he did not have to worry about running into Jedi or other stuck up Republicans. Here was more gloomy, yes, but that was not a problem. The world wasn't all sunshine and coffee shops.

He was not really thinking of anything as he watched the speeders zoom by below his window, thousands of people flying high, the wind whooshing around the durasteel boxes they flew in, bent on driving wherever they were going. He'd lit a few candles and scented incense, dimmed the lights pretty low, and had turned on the massive monitor on the wall tuned to a news channel on low volume for white noise. This was his way of relaxing, his reward for busting ass as of late.

A few words from the monitor snapped him out of the relaxation.

"The Republic bombing of key military locations on Denon--"

Republic bombing? Denon? When? Last he'd heard of the cold-but-not-so-cold war between the Republic and the Sith, Denon had not been involved. And bombing planets? The Republic had thrown a hissy fit over the concept when the Sith had done it. Surely, it wasn't possible that they'd present such a blatant display of hipocrisy so soon after claiming the moral high ground--

And yet here it was, footage of Republic ships unleashing a hellfire of plasma down on satellites and military facilities on Denon. Here it was, a broadcast of the new Empress--the new Empress??--tearing the Republic a new one for their deplorable actions.

That was a lot of information to take in, especially with the nightsister on his screen casually dropping in a few words about killing the Eternal and then continuing on with her point. It seemed they were under new leadership, and Cinere couldn't say he was opposed to it. Maybe the period of stagnation was over and the power vacuum filled. Maybe now the war would finally heat up.

And then they were back to reporting on Denon, showing a live video feed of the smouldering ruins of durasteel left behind by the bombing. Of the Republic fleet that blockaded the planet, keeping its people hostage.

An eye for an eye, though it was interesting to see the Republic sink to a new low. And it certainly was interesting to watch them take such bold, decisive action. Cinere idly wondered if this had been approved by the Senate, but who was he kidding? Rumor would have gotten out before voting even began. These were exciting times, and they would only grow more exciting in the fallout of this exchange of bombs.

"Oh!" cried one of the anchors. "Oh, the humanity!"

"Oh, the humanity, indeed."

And in the darkness of his room, the shadow of flames dancing on his walls, the Sith chuckled.

"Sir, maybe you should take a look at this?"

An assistant walked up to Flauki Ubbeson of Vendaxa with their data pad in hand. They had a smug look on their face as they came to give the data pad over to the Governor of Vendaxa. They knew this was good news for Flauki, and that this could be good for the ISC. Key word, 'could.'

"Let me see.."

As he watched and read, he knew exactly where this was headed.

"Very good Chancellor.. you have just made problems worse for yourself.. I need a another bottle of Champagne. We are going to celebrate the Vendaxan way."

Denon was not really a concern for Flauki as it had remained in Sith control, but it intrigued him. Perhaps the New Republic's attack would be the beginning of the inevitable end for them. Surely the FWA will no longer trust their leader, nor does most of his own Senators. Maybe the ISC should capitalize on this. Secession was surely a primary thought in some Senator's thoughts. He needed to get into contact with the new Representative in Intergalactic Affairs. Flauki wanted in on the action of possibly persuading some views and allegiances.
