Ranks of The Galactic Republic

5lguuzo.jpg

Welcome to the Republic faction! Now that you've decided to join (or even if you're still thinking of joining), it's important to know what the organization and ranks are in the faction. The Republic faction is organized into two sub-groups: The Grand Army of the Republic which is the official fighting force sponsored and sanctioned by the Republic, and the Senate, which represents the political and administrative bodies of the Republic.

The Grand Army of the Republic (otherwise known as the GAR) is a collective fighting force deriving resources and assets from member worlds committed to countering the Sith threat. It was preceded by the Border Alliance, which represented worlds primarily from the Republic's northern most territory that fell under the direct threat of Sith conquest. When the Galactic Senate chose not to combat the Sith, believing they would not be strong enough to represent a true threat to the Republic, these member worlds brought their militias and armies together to form the Border Alliance. As the Galactic Senate debated politics and foreign policy on their capital of Chandrila, the Border Alliance had taken the fight directly to the Sith. It took near unspeakable acts of violence and terrorism for the Republic to finally realize the grave threat the Sith posed, which is why it now is building a massive war machine once again. As of now, the Faction Leader is Currently the Supreme Commander and Chancellor, with his Assistant Faction Leader Head Speaker within the Republic Senate.

As of now, the Faction Leader is Currently the Supreme Chancellor, with his Assistant Faction Leaders serving as Head Speaker within the Republic Senate. In the military part of things is the Marshal General of the Grand Army. This thread details the ranks in both the Grand Army of the Republic and the Galactic Senate.

The Supreme Chancellor: The leader of the Senate, elected by its membership, the Supreme Chancellor was once a true executive before the end of the last great war with the Sith a century ago. As with most of the Republic’s central authority and organization, it dissipated as calls for autonomy and decentralization increased. Now, the Supreme Chancellor has returned to the role of the absolute leader of the Republic, imbued with emergency powers. The Chancellor leads the Defense Council though in practice most minutia is left to his Vice-Chancellor and the Marshal General by his side, who represent the two sides of the Galactic Republic and act as his inner cabinet.

The Grand Army of the Republic [GAR]

latest

A hundred years after the fall of the old Sith Empire, the emerging Sith Brotherhood began making moves towards Republic territory. It started small; piracy, minor attacks, and Republic ships disappearing near the Sith border, where most in the Republic dared not travel. The worlds in the northernmost Republic territories recognized this for what it was: the beginnings of a resurgent Sith dominion that would surely spark another war with the Republic. Hoping to rally systems to their cause, these worlds pleaded their case to the Galactic Senate and requested that the Republic raise an army to combat the Sith. These worlds expected a warm reception; instead, they were called warmongers. Some senators even called them traitors and enemies of a galactic peace that had existed for a hundred years.

These worlds knew that they faced a clear and present danger, so rather than comply with the Senate's refusal to build an army, they ignored the cautions of senators who insisted that the Sith Brotherhood was nothing more than a remnant that desperately clung to the past. To combat this threat, these worlds combined their own military forces and formed the Border Alliance, under the leadership of a High Commander. The High Commander and their defiant forces had a rocky relationship with the Senate, operating outside the purview of the Senate but nonetheless garnering the begrudging approval of its leaders.

After nearly a year of border skirmishes and threat-level escalations, the Republic Senate, under the administration of a young and pragmatic Supreme Chancellor, voted near-unanimously to formally recognize the Border Alliance as the makings of a Grand Army of the Republic. Although many gave their lives to see this become a reality, those who remain now find themselves at the forefront of a fast expanding, ever-empowered war machine supported by hundreds of worlds. Their goal: to end the Sith threat once and for all.

Army

YlCuEam.jpg

The mainstay and namesake of the Republic military, the Army is one of the largest military forces ever assembled in galactic history. Drawn from thousands of Republic-aligned worlds, each system is responsible for the recruitment, training and armament of its soldiers, though this is supplemented by Republic resources in the form of funding, advisers and equipment. This has created an incredibly diverse organisation with soldiers from hundreds of different species speaking as many languages.

Soldiers brush shoulders with comrades from units ranging from all-volunteer formations utilising cutting-edge technology to conscripts equipped only with only the most limited gear. On the majority of worlds however, Army recruits are volunteers awarded an enlistment bounty, given several weeks of basic training, equipped accordingly and deployed to the frontlines.

In the wake of the Battle of Coruscant, the number of recruits across most all Republic-aligned worlds has skyrocketed. Efforts to better uniform the Army continue, but with so many star-systems under Republic control there are simply too many worlds to make this a reality in such a short span of time. Most formations are generally kept well-supplied with armoured vehicles, artillery and equipment, however. In systems considered at high risk of Sith invasion - or that are currently under siege - newly formed units will typically be stationed on the planet upon which they were raised.

Navy

ZPyv2g4.jpg

Responsible for the transportation of the Republic's armies, as well as engaging in ship-to-ship warfare, the Navy in its currently militarised formation shares a history as brief as its ground-based counterpart but among whom it counts both starships and crews of both considerable and little experience. Whilst the Galactic Republic had always maintained a sparse but functional Navy for limited peacekeeping and transportation duties, most of the Grand Army of the Republic's more experienced officers and their vessels come from defence forces raised locally by individual planets and systems, largely deployed against pirates and - depending on the planet in question - their own civil and localised wars.

Considerable efforts and resources have been expended by the Republic to greatly expand and modernise its own fleets, as well as subsidise and reinforce those planets able to contribute their own starship construction and deployment. Machines and trained personnel do not appear overnight however, but as more star-systems enter a state of total war more vessels than ever before are seeing service on the frontlines of the war in space.

Marines

RXqJczP.jpg

The Republic Marines are often seen as the 'face' of the Grand Army of the Republic. Acting as a quick reaction force aboard Navy vessels, the Marines are ready to be deployed to any system as needed. In contrast to the Army, the Marines are a much more uniform, better equipped and organised force, directly funded by and answerable only to the Republic rather than subsidised by any one system or planet.

Most marines were drawn from the militas that comprised the defunct Border Alliance, quickly filling out their ranks with large numbers of battle-hardened veterans. Survivors from near-destroyed Army units are usually folded into the Marines to further supplement this more experienced force though raw recruits are not unheard of.

Where the Army serves to take and hold ground, the Marines act as a flexible force of shock troops, usually working in tandem with Special Forces units during the initial stages of a conflict, or among the first friendly faces that a beleaguered planet's defenders see when 'the cavalry' arrive.

Special Forces

swe16_preview2.jpg

Organised under the Special Operations Group, the Republic's elite special forces units were born out of the realisation that the war against the Sith Brotherhood was no mere border conflict. Units and individuals able to act independently of regular military units would be required to undertake sensitive and critical assignments including infiltration, sabotage, and assassination.

Only the best soldiers from within the ranks of the Army, Marines and even the Navy are invited for selection, though the current state of war has forced potential recruits to prove their worth in the field as much as in simulations and training. Those who do move on to join their elite ranks are spared no expense, their armouries supplied with technology that is both cutting edge and and in some cases black market and illegal. Ultimately, no amount of tech can account for ones own skill and talent. Though their origins and histories are diverse, every member of the Special Operations Group can be counted as one of the galaxy's most hardened, efficient and deadly soldiers.

Note: All GAR Player Characters are all considered part of Special Forces. Only NPCs makeup the other four branches, however service in one of them (or the defunct Border Alliance) should be part of your character's recent history.

Ranks

In-character and Out-of-Character ranks are not mutually exclusive. For example, an Assistant Faction Leader (AFL) may opt to play a character who is ranked as a Trooper, whilst a Member may eventually become a Commander. The only exception to this is the rank of [TBD], held by the AFL responsible for the GAR sub-faction (@Calixis). IC ranks are gained based on in-character merit. In turn, OOC ranks are gained based on out-of-character merit.

Trooper - The backbone of any unit will always be its enlisted men and women. When a soldier is transferred to the ranks of Special Forces they are granted the rank of Trooper, regardless of their previous position. Most Troopers were corporals or sergeants prior to their selection, however there are many exceptions, particularly as the war has drawn on. Troopers are expected to be flexible in their operational capabilities, undertaking assignments both as part of a unit, in pairs or flying solo. For this reason they are unofficially viewed as having some amount of authority over regular Republic forces, at least to a point. It is not unusual for regular units to defer to their 'expertise' during particularly grievous situations.

Squad Leader - Trained and experienced in applying small-unit tactics, those who command Special Forces units must lead their men in on unconventional and critical assignments both on and beyond the battlefields in the war against the Sith. To lead a squad into some of the most dangerous and critical of missions requires experience, knowledge on tactics, initiative and confidence both in their men and themselves.

Commander - Special Forces Commanders are responsible for the planning and direction of the Grand Army's least conventional and important operations. Often working in tandem with other branches of the military, they command great respect from most of the hierarchy and many battles have turned by actions passed down from Special Forces Commander. Whether directing several strike teams as they infiltrate and disable a Sith warship, or taking to the battlefield personally in command of a leaderless, breaking Republic regiment, their purview is broad but all honed and utilised under one simple goal: Win this war for the Republic at any cost.

Republic Senate

800

While some respect and appreciate the diplomacy and the democracy of the Republic, others see it as a nuisance. All the same it is an integral part of the Galactic Republic. Senators represent their planets and people in an effort to balance out decision making. Not just a single voice speaks in the senate. Together they debate subjects of importance that will decide the best course of action for the republic. While nobody likes compromises it helps the greater good of the republic comes from a wide array of people and cultures. Unified decisions though tumultuous at times results in a community spanning the stars with the Galactic Senate being its nexus.

Senator: The representatives of the Republic, these individuals have become members of the Republic Senate. Senators often have unparalleled resources and connections even before becoming members of the Senate and are typically keen political operators with multiple ways to get things done. The promise of power is a tempting one and some have joined the Senate simply to be closer to it, while others are patriots who seek to see the Republic through the war and see peace restored. On top of this some even wish to raise the republic above what it had even been before, bringing about an even greater time of prosperity. Together they discuss, debate, represent and participate in numerous events and subjects that are in the interest of the Galactic Republic.

Head Speaker: The Head Speaker is the elected or chosen deputy of the Supreme Chancellor. Traditionally they have served as the Speaker of the Senate but with the new changes in the Galactic Repulic, the Head Speaker represents the civilian and political interests of the Senate while organizing other duties with the Supreme Chancellor. The Head Speaker has become more involved in the day-to-day operations of the Senate since the Supreme Chancellor began leading both the military and diplomatic sides of the Republic simultaniously, leading to the Head Speaker occasionally seen as the Vice Chancellor.
