Thousands of years ago, the most prominent worlds in the Galactic Core came together to form a new galactic government: the Republic, a trade union and central government where citizens from all across the galaxy could come to speak to their peers and solve the problems of the day in a democratic fashion. The Republic has stood for centuries as the embodiment of those ideas, as its member worlds seek to better themselves and the galaxy.

In its earliest days, the Republic fulfilled that charter in peace. From its capital of Chandrila, home to some of the galaxy's greatest thinkers, the Republic led its corner of the galaxy in galactic law and policy, including the criminalization of sentient slavery. The Galactic Senate, founded as the bedrock of democracy, became the primary regulators of the trade and commerce that was vital to the Republic's existence. Together, senators helped the economy grow and solved border disputes without needless violence. The galaxy prospered.

As time went on, however, the Republic suffered a string of devastating conflicts. It was not the Republic's fault, of course. The rise of the Dark Lords of the Sith was a change in galactic power that few could have predicted. The Sith Empire was on the march to war, and for millennia the Republic was forced to defend itself. This made many world's cynical of the Republic's leadership over the galaxy. Poor leadership and several breakdowns in negotiations gave voice to those who did not care for the galactic institution's power. Even in an era of planetary control, there were those who had been marginalized by the majority requirement of the Senate, and became dismayed about the effectiveness of the galactic leader. New and old threats alike chipped away at the security and authority of the Republic, calling into question the need and effectiveness of such an institution.

Still, however, the Republic continued. The Chancellor of the Senate, previously little more than the chairperson of the meeting, took on an expanded role in leading the Republic. As divisions between Core and Rim worlds heightened, and as threats appeared within and on the edges of Republic space, it became a struggle for the leaders of the Senate and their allies to keep the Republic glued together. Finally, one hundred years ago, the Republic and the Jedi defeated the Sith Empire. It seemed, at last, that the threat of the Sith was gone.
