Renard Harlow

Excerpt · Biography · Personality · Skills and abilities · Miscellaneous

Renard had grown up with parents who were terribly afraid of, well, everything. Going from planet to planet, staying only long enough to resupply and facilitate their son's studies, these two taught the Shistavanen boy everything their family had to offer. Never having friends or interacting much with others, this skewed the genius young man's view of the world, becoming quite uncaring to anything except his creations. Other people were tools to him, just as the ones he used to upgrade and create weapons and technology, and as of yet he hadn't found a reason to think differently.

Biography

Renard's parents had been raised just as how they had raised their son: afraid and suspicious of others and coveting their heritage. The Harlow family name hadn't been Shistavanen in origin, sounding more like an Alderaanian name, yet the specifics of that heritage had been lost in time. What was left was a scattering of knowledge: strategy, combat, weapons and starship designs, a definitely military upbringing. The fear, though, didn't allow for a normal childhood for Renard. Traveling from planet to planet in their ship, only stopping to resupply and making sure not to meet any more people than needed for as long as needed, meant the boy had no friends besides his parents. Thinking this was how it was supposed to be, to work and preserve their knowledge in solitude, Renard accepted this and focused on his preferred study of engineering and development.

Even with their caution, word of their son's genius managed to leak out to unsavory characters. Renard's parents were taken during one of their stops, to be used as hostages to capture the young man. They didn't count on the strength of their fear, though, and the couple decided to take their own lives using a hidden grenade rather than risk their son's capture. Unfortunately, Renard had seen all this happen through their ship's viewport. There was nothing left of the only people he truly knew, wounding and closing what little of his heart had been allowed to connect with others. He flew off, continuing the cycle, until he ran out of money and supplies for his work.

Now he travels with a small band of misfits, paying for his room and board with his technical expertise. They would be useful to him, for now, though while traveling with them he had some thoughts outside his usual lifestyle. Was there something more he could do? If done right, he could make a living for himself as a designer of weapons and technology, though he would be beholden to no one if he had any say. He couldn't fight as well as others, just not something he was as interested, but if he could give others his creations, it could get his name out there. They were all tools, after all, and if something broke, he'd just replace it.

Personality

Renard prefers to be alone, working with computers and any other medium he needs for his creations. Droids are also fine, as he doesn't see them as being as complex as other living beings and thus easier to work with. When someone enters his workspace he gives them just enough courtesy as to keep them from being upset or hurt, mainly because such things are annoyances greater than pretending to give a damn for a few moments. He speaks in short, succinct sentences most of the time unless speaking of his work, then he can prattle on and on without care if the other party understands what he's saying. His social skills need quite a bit of work.

Inside, Renard's heart is still wounded and hurting. It had felt, even a little, the warmth of bonding with others in the form of his parents. Then they were taken from him, showing him a reason they had felt that initial fear of others, and without any to speak to the wound just festered. Deep down he wants to feel that warmth again but is so afraid and ignorant of matters of the heart that he doesn't even know where to start. To take the ache away he buries himself in his work, the cold certainty of machinery numbing the pain to tolerable levels.

Skills and abilities

Techno Savant - Renard is a genius engineer, if rather unknown due to his caution for spreading his creations around. Many still need testing and parts for prototypes, yet the designs are usually sound and intriguing.

Strategic Fighter - When it comes to combat, Renard is only a fair shot and not as strong as his usually bestial brethren. However, thanks to the tactical knowledge imparted to him by his family's legacy, he can use what he has as effectively as possible. He's also skilled at coming up with strategems even with limited information, though the more he has the better the tactic.
