DESCRIPTION
Development of the R7-series was a corporate secret, occurring during the media blitz that surrounded production of the R6-series astromech droid. The R7 unit featured two fixed, wheeled legs and a third retractable leg, and was heavily shielded against electrical discharges. These droids were primarily used aboard E-wing starfighters, and required significant modification to work effectively with X-wings or other astromech-required craft. A typical R7 unit could hold up to fifteen hyperspace jump coordinates in its astrogation buffer and survive a near miss from an ion cannon.

R7s are barrel-shaped droids, with locomotion is provided by tripod leg arrangement, each leg containing a wheel. These wheels can be magnetized to adhere to most metallic surfaces. R7 units are equipped with a myriad of sensors and tools, considered more than adequate to handle any task they are assigned; R7s can communicate directly with and run diagnostics on myriad computer systems, as well as affect physical repairs and calibrations even to complex drive systems and other machines. Despite this, they are compact, just under a meter tall, the same as their direct predecessor.

Like their predecessors, R7-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They instead vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. R7 units are quick to develop more distinct personalities, especially if not subjected to regular memory wipes.

Although somewhat dated and originally designed for a specific type of craft, the R7 can still be found and purchased. Many have been modified for more general use, their more advanced software and quick thinking considered a fair tradeoff by some. Some vendors will even sell them bundled with a purchased E-wing for a small discount.

LEGALITY
Legal. Astromech droids such as the R7 series are permitted in most regions of the Galaxy.

INTENT
To introduce a Legends-only astromech model that goes hand in hand with the E-wing starfighter, as well as a different aesthetic option among the classic R-series.
