DESCRIPTION

"A meter-tall stack of the worst business decisions you could possibly want."
_Mechtech Illustrated.

Fresh off the record-breaking success of their R2, R3 and R4 series droids, Industrial Automaton was about due for a dose of hubris, and received quite a large one when it released its budget-priced R5 model to an ungrateful public. One of IA's rare flops, the R5 astromech is the R2 series' credit-store cousin.

R5s are barrel-shaped droids, equipped with a host of tools and sensors to aid in their assigned duties. Locomotion is provided by tripod leg arrangement, with each leg containing a wheel. These wheels can be magnetized to adhere to most metallic surfaces. R5s are not equipped with as many tools as their predecessors, notably lacking such items as a fusion cutter and a hydrospanner, although it does gain an extra manipulator arm. In general, R5s are just about adequate for medium repair work. Like most astromech droids, R5s can function as a substitute for a dedicated navicomputer aboard hyperdrive-equipped starships, however they use astrogation circuitry originally developed for the R4 series, and thus performing any sort of hyperspace calculation is taxing.

R5-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They instead vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. R5 units have low-quality personality matrices, resulting in a sharp, sullen default attitude that does little to endear it to its owners. If left without a memory wipe, R5s can develop more distinct personalities, and have even been found to be quite selfless and loyal, although they rarely get the chance to demonstrate this capacity.

Due to their numerous shortcomings, R5 units were an abysmal failure on the civilian market, and were nearly a net loss for IA had it not been for the Clone Wars. The incredible demand for astromechs of any kind during the conflict led to large orders of the R5 for the Grand Army of the Republic. Even so, the R5 was discontinued shortly after the war, and when war surplus R5s subsequently flooded the market, the type became essentially worthless.

In the present day, finding a working R5 unit is considered an enormous fluke. Nevertheless, it can be done, and R5s can still be found in some parts of the Galaxy.
