DESCRIPTION
The R4 series is a model of droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton. R4s are "agromech" droids, a sub-class of the more common astromech droid which is more geared toward ground and atmospheric vehicles rather than spacecraft. IA, theorizing that there was a large segment of the market that was more likely to have a souped-up landspeeder at home than a hot starfighter, built the R4 with this market in mind, and this strategy worked. The R4 was a modest hit for the company, and some units continue to see service even well over a century after the model's introduction.

R4s are barrel-shaped droids, with locomotion is provided by tripod leg arrangement, each leg containing a wheel. These wheels can be magnetized to adhere to most metallic surfaces. R4 units are equipped with a myriad of sensors and tools, considered more than adequate to handle any task they are assigned; R4s can communicate directly with and run diagnostics on myriad computer systems, as well as affect physical repairs and calibrations to drive systems and other machines. Despite this, they are compact, just a little over a meter tall, and just slightly larger than an R2 or R3 unit.

In general, R4s are sturdier than the previous R2 and R3 models, using heavier gauge plastoid in their casings and simpler, more reliable - albeit less compact - internal components. R4s are better able to resist harsh conditions, and even in the present day are commonly found in service at remote outposts and in dangerous industrial areas.

Like astromech droids, R4 agromechs can function as a substitute for a dedicated navicomputer aboard hyperdrive-equipped starships. This is not the task for which they were designed, however, and performing hyperspace calculations at full speed is taxing for an R4's cognitive circuitry. Many owners have upgraded their R4s with astrogation sub-systems from dedicated astromechs to alleviate this shortcoming.

R4-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They instead vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. R4s are quick to develop distinct personalities, especially if not subjected to regular memory wipes.

Though no longer manufactured by IA, R4s can still be found in many parts of the Galaxy, and have a rugged, reliable reputation even centuries after their introduction.

LEGALITY
Legal. Agromech droids such as the R4 series are permitted in most regions of the Galaxy.

INTENT
