DESCRIPTION
The R2 series is a model of astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton. One of the company's all-time best-selling products, the R2 is among the most widely produced astromech droids ever made. Though the design is well over a century and a half old in the present day, R2s can still be found in service across the Galaxy thanks to their durable, easily modifiable design and good capabilities. R2-D2, a hero of the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Galactic Civil War, was an R2 unit.

R2s are barrel-shaped droids, equipped with a host of tools and sensors to aid in their assigned duties. Locomotion is provided by tripod leg arrangement, with each leg containing a wheel. These wheels can be magnetized to adhere to most metallic surfaces. R2 units are equipped with a myriad of sensors and tools, considered more than adequate to handle any task they are assigned; R2s can communicate directly with and run diagnostics on myriad computer systems, as well as affect physical repairs and calibrations even to complex drive systems and other machines. Despite this, they are compact, just a hair over a meter tall, a marked improvement over their hulking R1 predecessor.

Like most astromech droids, R2s can function as a substitute for a dedicated navicomputer aboard hyperdrive-equipped starships; starfighters in particular are commonly equipped with an astromech socket rather than a dedicated navigation system, often with an R-series unit in mind. R2s are credited with re-popularizing astromech sockets, as their small size, full navicomputer functionality and ability to conduct in-flight repairs made them an attractive alternative to dedicated systems. Previous astromech droids, prior to the R1, had only been able to augment navicomputers and not fully replace them.

R2-series droids cannot speak most organic languages, although they can understand them. They instead vocalize in droidspeak, or through text when connected to an external network or vehicle. R2 units were a marked improvement over the R1 in terms of personality, as well. Fresh from the factory, they were more flexible and outgoing than their predecessor, and were quick to develop more distinct personalities, especially if not subjected to regular memory wipes.

Though no longer manufactured by IA, R2s can still be found in many parts of the Galaxy, and have a rugged, reliable reputation even centuries after their introduction.
