Per my new OP template, thread is death enabled
Zathria had been given her next assignment by the Council. After the fiasco at Yavin, there was a great deal of speculation about the invasion being an inside job. Locating exactly who that inside person was was a complicated task.

She was also heading the Atrix investigation, and that was quite a lead. Hailee Lightwood was another piece of that puzzle. Or perhaps it was just coincidence. Irregularities in her activity had popped up, and it was time someone looked into them.

The Padawan had been summoned to Brighthome for questioning, and Zathria had awaited her in a relatively comfortable room. One of the temple's meditation chambers would serve the purpose she needed.

Zathria worked at a mobile work station as she waited Hailee's arrival. The Knight could see that her ship had already been tagged as "landed" and so, she expected the Padawan to arrive at any moment. Time would tell if this would pan into another of these "unpleasant" interactions.

Actions have consequences...her boss always used to say that and deep inside her, she knew this was true. It had been a while, but now the Order had - thanks to knight Axil - noticed that she might have overstepped some boundaries and that it was about time that she returned to a Jedi base...

The reason of why she had set course to Brighthome was special though: She had been summoned for questioning...and well that wasn't optimal. Had she gone too far? Obviously, the order wasn't amused by a free roaming padawan but this was nothing but a formal condition, right? She could have her trials months ago...but she hadn't yet and so she had still broken rules...

But this was no tense questioning, was it? She hadn't done anything bad after ala! Forbidden? Well...she knew padawan weren't supposed to go on adventures on their own and she had - admittedly entered syndicate territory on her own - but she had never endangered the lives of others. Quite the contrary: She had saved plenty! And while she had maybe risked her own life a few times (but if so, at least in the presence of other knights), that still wasn't very amusing.

She didn't really know what to expect from the questioning now though and so she walked through the corridors with a rather neutral expression. She knee justicar Zathria was expecting her and she hadn't had the pleasure to meet her yet, so she was just hoping that this...unique setting wouldn't be too tense.

As she entered the room she greeted the other Jedi with a polite smile and a short, respectful incline of her head. "Knight At'arel. I immediately set course for Brighthome after receiving the call...", she said to her, "It's nice to meet you", the smile widened a bit while she tried to start this conversation the right way this time.

The doors slid open and Zathria's eyes flicked up to the woman as she came inside.

Welcome to Brighthome, she said, though she didn't seem particularly joyful. The truth was, being a Justicar was hard most of the time, and when she was on official business, she had to guard herself and her thoughts while she was doing her work while also discerning those of others.

Do you know why you've been summoned? she asked, looking up and waiting to see if there was anything that registered on the Padawan's face. What the other woman didn't know was that a Jedi security team was combing through her ship currently in the Jedi equivalent of a search warrant. Not to mention performing a few other secret actions at Zathria's request.

Ah. Lightsaber and comlink first, please, she said, holding out her hand for both before they went further. It wasn't entirely different from an Officer being asked to turn in badge and gun while on suspension. Or something like that. She would begin to grasp the gravity of this meeting.

The justicar's tone wasn't icy, but it was also not super happy, but well, their meeting was of an official nature after all and this was not just a regular sit-in. She reminded herself that she was here to be questioned and that this was probably not going to be a fun event...

When she asked her whether she knew the reason for this meeting, she immediately nodded, but did so rather slowly. The easiest answer would have been 'because I'm apparently attacted by trouble rather often', but she knew she had to give a more specific answer. With a serious expression she thus answered "because I've broken the rules...and because my recent activity must look a bit suspicious", she truthfully admitted, making it obvious that the padawan had already reflected on her doings.

Until then, she was still rather relaxed, but when she was now asked to hand in her stuff her muscles involuntarily tensed up. So yeah...apparently she was in trouble after all...Well at least she got the chance to explain herself. She stepped forward and pulled out the comlink first, before she handed over the lightsaber. Slowly but steadily the atmosphere changed and Hailee was starting to feel like she was entering an actual trial.

Zathria accepted the comlink, setting it down next to her laptop and then the lightsaber, which she slipped into her robes for the time being. She motioned for Hailee to take a seat on one of the other soft stools.

She listened to the answer, and it was... well, it was at least straightforward and honest. Zathria nodded.

Yes, that's part of it. Let's talk about it, she said. She'd have been lying if she said she wasn't tense. If Hailee was involved in the Yavin assault, then this could easily turn into a fight to the death, and Zathria wasn't going to bank on that lightsaber being the only one.

But she was getting ahead of herself.

So. Is there anything you'd like to tell me? she asked, knowing well that this would go better if things were out in the open. The more Zathria would have to dig, the harder this would all be for everyone involved.

Hailee didn't want to be or even just seem tense, but the atmosphere was somehow...charged with something difficult to grasp. She took a seat when the knight gestured for her to do so and glanced up at her. It wasn't true apprehension, but she really wasn't sure what to expect.

The justicar confirmed her assumption and a slight nervous smile crossed her face as she mentioned that they were supposed to talk about that now as she really didn't know what she wanted to hear after all. A padawan trying to bust a slave ring on her own was definitely not a clever thing to do, but in what kind of troubles was she now?

She exhaled and straightened her back, slightly fumbling around with her hands. "Well...I know I shouldn't have been on my own like this...I had a hard time reaching my master so I followed distress signals all across the galaxy and pursued various objects with various knights...". In the end, she had never landed on a planet on her own...there had always been a knight with her, but on Toydaria she had tried to do it on her own. "When knight Axil bumped into me on Toydaria, I was admittedly not accompanied by a knight...I had picked up rumors in syndicate space and felt confident to pursue the trace on my own...that was definitely wrong" she admitted, referring to the problem with her and the missions she had started on her own.

Zathria listened to her answers, typing periodically on her laptop as she did and putting the picture together in her head of what had happened.

She continued to be silent as she waited for the other woman to continue speaking if there was anything she wanted to add before moving on to the next question.

There was a bling sound as a message came through on her laptop from the search team and she quickly read it, eyes scanning over in brief before asking her next question.

But this isn't the first time, is it? she asked. Just the first time you've been caught. Looking at mission logs and check-ins, you've had periods where you were gone for months at a time, isn't that correct? she asked, looking up at the other woman.

You were captured by the Sith for a time, were you not? she asked. All the reason why Padawans weren't allowed to travel on their own. She should have been with her Master, and the fact that he had grossly neglected her would be another topic of investigation all on its own.

Tell me about that, she said. Hailee would quickly begin to put together that this was far, far bigger than just landing on an unauthorized planet. That had merely been the final flake of snow that started an avalanche.

Hailee changed the positioning of her legs after a while, seemingly not finding a comfortable position to sit, but maybe that was because this whole atmosphere was simply not really comfortable and when the laptop made a noise, she immediately raised a brow, desperately wondering whether this meant anything for her now.

The justicar continued the serious of questions and Hailee slowly began to realize that she was apparently looking for something more specific after all. "But I wasn't up to anything then...like I said, I had a hard time reaching my master and so I've traveled around for a bit" she admitted, however their conversation immediately shifted into an interesting direction.

So that was what this meeting was about...even though it had been months, no- even more than a year now, questions remained. And it was absolutely not hard to guess why this seemed...wrong."Yes...", she truthfully replied, however her mood changing. Some memories weren't pleasant and it seemed like this would all get stirred up again. She sighed.

"I was captured, yes. It wasn't an easy time and I was...repeatedly tested. I managed to resist...I can promise you that nothing concerning my attitudes changed! It was rather...the other way around. I'm not sure how many...details you need, but I can assure you that I'm not involved with the Sith anymore...".
Well there had been many ups and downs, she had even fought Ronan on New Alderaan and well then they had...fallen for one another, but even if he had even forced her to train with him, this pull towards the dark she had once felt was now gone. She had left that behind when she had left him and Caelian hadn't stirred that up again. She had repeatedly reflected on all that and constantly chosen the light and hadn't let herself be tempted again. Still, she was assumed that the Order wasn't to happy about all that with their amount of knowledge. But this was why she was here: To clarify things.

Despite understanding that it's a violation of the Council Mandates? she said after Hailee's first comment. Your Master abandoned you and you decided that you would simply galavant across the galaxy hoping no one would notice, she said. As much as the girl may not like to admit it, that was precisely what had happened. It wasn't a single violation of the Council Mandates, it was a flagrant disregard for them shown consistently over time. It was not a great look for her or her Master... but he would be dealt with in a separate investigation.

She seemed to relent slightly as Hailee began to recount the details of her imprisonment.

I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I'm going to need more information than that, she said. It felt... like she was hiding something. Like there were things she wasn't telling the Justicar, and finding those things out... well, that was Zathria's entire job. Revealing things that other Jedi didn't want the Order to know about. Darkness that was buried and hidden away.

You say you were tested, and yet you're here. Sith aren't known for sparing those who don't pass their tests, she said. The implication was clear. Zathria wanted to know precisely what she had done to keep herself alive. She wanted the details of these Sith she had spent time among. What better way to invade Yavin or even Brighthome itself than with a sleeper agent, broken in an Imperial prison who then "escaped" to the Jedi. It was a move the former-Warden, now Empress would certainly be intelligent enough to see, and she was sure that Darth Trelain was no fool in that regard either.

And so Hailee found herself being accused of things she admittedly did and things that were obviously wrong or even a violation of the Council Mandate, but it seemed like while they had tracked her locations, they had no idea what she had been up to. "I wasn't gallavanting!" she replied, her voice now obviously louder and higher from the indignation, "I was picking up one distress signal after the next and I just wanted to help!" she forced herself to breathe deeply, swallowing that slight inner outrage. "I couldn't just ignore them...there were people in desperate need of help. I'm not denying the fact that I shouldn't have done that and that I should have reported back instead of...well going on my own, but I really just trying to help..." There was a slight desperation in her voice as she knew exactly how it felt to be left alone with no one there to help. Still, she had broken the rules and she wasn't exactly happy about that either, but she hadn't been lying when she said she had ended up with other knights whenever she was helping people in the name of the Order. This wasn't vigilante justice...even though a few things, including crimes like slavery, she sometimes took a bit personal...but that wasn't the point of that.

The questioning continued and the justicar pointed to one specific issue: The reason why she was still here after having been captured by a Sith and having spent another day and admittedly a night with another one...This was exactly where things got even more complicated. "Yes..." she began, "they are not" she agreed, her expressions immediately changing back to serious and perhaps slightly somber even.

"In order to survive, I did what I had to...Thanks to my childhood I've gotten quite versatile when it comes to surviving. I was used to being surrounded by terrible people who did terrible things, so either giving up or giving in was never an option" she let out another sigh, her gaze not leaving the knight's. "The Sith that captured me showed mercy because I managed to wrap him around my finger" she truthfully replied, giving her the most direct answer possible. "We developed a connection after some time...he crumbled and let me go in the end" that was obviously the long story short version. "I am not proud of all that and I can also admit that he managed to make me sway for a short period of time, but I managed to find my back to the light immediately". His tests had been draining and resisting had cost energy, but a lot of time had passed and she was absolutely confident that she was doing fine. When she had been discovered by the Order, even Pêro had noticed that there was something small, dark inside her, but the truth was, that after the talks she had with Caelian, this inner pull she had perceived for some time had somehow stopped...She hadn't even tried to actively suppress it, but after she had seen him again, this slight allure or rather subtle fascination of the dark side she had once perceived had vanished...

Zathria couldn't shake the nagging feeling at the back of her mind. The sound of a tortured being that seemed to echo in the back of her mind for the last several minutes. It almost made her skin crawl, but she focused on what the Padawan was saying for now.

And she wasn't particularly reassured by it. Hailee admitted to having done things that were presumably horrible based on the way she talked about them, but refused to give up details. Zathria admired her honesty, at least, though she couldn't help but note the way she referred to this Sith who had captured her. The words screamed of something more and were steeped quite obviously in a story of manipulation.

And how did you manage to "wrap him around your finger?" she asked.

And then there was the final statement. She'd swayed but immediately come back. Zathria had doubts that she had enough insight to know if that was true. Many who fell never realized how fast or how far they had fallen until it was much, much too late.

That, of course, assumed that the young woman in front of her actually believed what she was saying.

You were at New Alderaan according to reports, correct? Tell me about that, she said, once again leaving the floor open for the other woman to say whatever she chose.

Even though Hailee was revealing more and more honest details, it seemed like the knight still had plenty of open questions that were in desperate need of an answering from her side. Admittedly, her life had always been a wild rollercoaster, but the last year had left no doubts that she was standing in the right side and that she would always fight for it.

She still tried her best to remain calm, even if she was forced to talk about quite unpleasant things..."Well...with my charm, I'd say. It started as bantering, but the amusement soon turned into something more serious. At some point we were really getting along...than he betrayed me and I met him again on New Alderaan. I fought him rather viciously, couldn't bring myself to lethally hurt him in the end, and then he even saved me from another Sith Champion then" she explained, letting out a sigh.

I should have known by then that he definitely couldn't be trusted as he even turned against his own kind...but I guess that's the very essence of it. That's how the Sith are. Unpredictable and ruthless. I was naïve...Injured, I left New Alderaan with him...but I should have never left. That is definitely a mistake I have commited. I thought I had managed to change him, but I've soon learnt that once you're corrupted like that, there's no going back". Her voice trailed off a bit and she was getting quieter. There had been a time where she had been afraid to descend a similar path, but she now knew she was strong enough not to ever move closer to the brink. Never would she ever let herself be brought into a similar position. When she had met Caelian on Onderon for the first time, she had expressed that she was fearing that she might fall, but this fear was gone. The light she felt was seemingly stronger than ever, which was exactly why she was afraid that her position within the Order was threatened by her prior tendency to disregard the Mandate...

Zathria had to give her points for her honesty. Or at least, appearance of honesty. Zathria knew that the best lies had hints of truth in them, and her job was to sift through lies and truth.

And there was still that screaming in the back of her mind. Something that was so very wrong.

So you fought on New Alderaan and then fled the battle in conjunction with your former captor who you developed a relationship with? she said... yeah, it didn't taste any better when Zathria said it out loud. This went... well, it went almost as deep as Zathria had feared. Maybe even more so.

Was the girl a Sith? That was when she placed it. The screaming she'd heard in her mind she'd heard before. Always across the battlefield and usually mostly drowned out by the waves of death in the air.

She reached into her robe and drew out the girl's lightsaber, and that was where she felt it: the tortured Kyber crystal of a corrupted blade. A Sith blade.

She activated it, the crimson blade casting a sickening hue across the room and causing Zathria's gut to drop. Her face shifted and her eyes darted over to Hailee. Help me understand how I'm supposed to believe anything that you say? she asked.

She hadn't broken eye contact and the knight would see that while she was being honest, speaking about all that still wasn't an easy task...and yet the justicar pushed further and further. The way she recapitulated the events left a bitter taste in her mouth and she swallowed hard.

"Yes...fleeing wasn't a choice at first as I was hurt and...all over the place. But like I said. It was naive of me to place the trust in the wrong person. One can never trust the Sith". Despite the agony that rang with her words, they were still relatively firm.

However then it only got worse. Hailee's emerald gaze shifted onto the blade as the justicar pressed the button that caused not only the room, but their faces to be covered by a red hue. Again, she swallowed. While the tension rose to a maximum, Hailee was relatively calm.

They were apparently following a wrong trace. "I'm pretty sure you would be able to yell if I was laying" she stated rather flatly, emerald eyes wandering up to meet her gaze again. "This blade isn't mine. My own lightsaber was taken and I had no choice but to fight with it when I was on New Alderaan. At first it felt absolutely wrong. There was an inner reluctance inside me when I first touched the hilt that encompasses this bled crystal. After a while, it started calling me. Again and again, until those desperate, tormented cries died down. I was no longer affected by them...I intended to purify the crystal, but I haven't found anyone who could help me with that yet" she explained, her voice still calm.

"I speak the truth...nothing but the truth. There was a brief time where I would have doubted myself, but not anymore. I am not affiliated with the Sith, there Code or whatsoever. As wrong as this all might look. I'm still in possession of the lightsaber, but that was a life insurance as well. When I traveled across the galaxy, I helped whereever I could and even though I might have violated the Council Mandate by traveling alone, I am not violating the Code. I respect life and I seek to protect it wherever I am, and even though the wielder of this lightsaber didn't, I do not have any personal connections to this lightsaber". She was still glaring at her, her words carrying the severity of honest, yet still difficult words. This whole story was super complex and looked more than suspicious, but she was really hoping they would see that she had nothing to do with the Sith.

Zathria had heard a great deal, and her eyes were still hard as she deactivated the lightsaber, but still held it in her hand. It reeked of the Dark Side, and not only had Hailee seemingly grown accustomed to it, she'd begun to hear its call.

Zathria could tell that the young woman at least believed what she said, but that was the crux of the problem, wasn't it? Zathria was trying to determine something more than just the external statement on the consciousness.

I believe that you believe what you're saying, she admitted after a moment and sighed. The problem was that she wasn't convinced the girl wasn't deceiving herself. Some of the worst things imaginable were done with the best of intentions. Anakin Skywalker didn't think he was falling until he'd plunged too far. Andraste and Kravos had been Jedi right up until the day they'd attacked the Council. The list went on.

I appreciate your honesty, and it will work in your favor, she said, trying to acknowledge that the things she was admitting were not easy. Even if Zathria had had to prod some of it out.

What else would you like to tell me? she asked, once more providing the young woman with an opportunity to share anything and everything before Zathria started prodding again.

There was a silence that followed while the justicar studied her. The tension was still high, but once she deactivated the crimson bladed lightsaber, Hailee exhaled. The mood was lighten up at least to some extent, now that the glow that had wrapped the two of them in a red hue was gone.

The answer that came next didn't actually soothed Hailee, because it wasn't hard to tell that there was a second part to that statement. Her words carried far more worth and it wasn't hard to tell that the knight wasn't convinced.

"I guess there is not much more to tell...I can assure you that all the knights with whom I worked with could even confirm the things I said. I don't feel...tainted. I don't feel like my morality is threatened. I will never give in" she was obviously trying to make her point clear, but it seemed like the knight was still worried she might not be able to appropriately assess her own situation.

But what else did she want to know? What was she searching for? Details that would contradict what she had outlined? There weren't any. "I am more committed to the Order and the light than ever. I am striving for peace and I feel like I'm much more at peace with myself than I have ever been, even if I had to learn some things the hard way. I'm still eager to learn and there is simply so much more...Right now I'm just really afraid you might believe that I have descended a road I should have never entered in the first place. I never wanted any of this to happen...I wasn't planning on hanging out with Sith, but they have not changed me. Quite the contrary: I've rather learnt that there is only one way. The Jedis'. And that you should never, under no circumstances ever, trust them". Her voice was slightly trailing off while it was continously getting more sad. She let out another sigh, her gaze momentarily shifting down to the lightsaber again. It was still a painful reminder of what had been, but her beliefs didn't sway.

Zathria looked at the other woman for a few moments and then tapped at the laptop for several more. She frowned and then looked up at Hailee again. The girl was practically squirming under her gaze, but Zathria wasn't here to coddle anyone. She was here to make sure that Yavin didn't happen again. To make sure that this woman in front of her wasn't the cause of Yavin.

I'll be blunt. Promises don't carry a lot of weight right now. Actions speak louder than words, she said. She was going to respect the woman enough to treat her like the adult that she was, and she got the impression that it was another attempt at manipulation... whether intentional or otherwise. After all, this was the Padawan who had a Sith "wrapped around her little finger."

The fact of the matter was, Zathria knew more than she let on. She had let the girl have an opportunity to come clean, and she'd chosen not to take it. But that would come in time.

And you were gone for months with this Sith? Who was he? she asked.

The typing on the laptop did make her nervous, because even though she had nothing to hide, she felt like the justicar's analytical gaze burned right through her. She felt like this was a trial at court and they wanted to know whether she was guilty of terrible things...things she never did.

Her answer wasn't exactly reassuring, but she was glad that she was honest with her as well. "Well if actions speak louder, than let all the other knights confirm that I was investing so much to help all across the galaxy" she quietly replied. Yavin, Sernpidal, Nar Shaddaa, Ord Mantell, Toydaria...although the last one had gotten her into trouble, but entering syndicate space hadn't been clever after all.

"I didn't know you were planning on unraveling my unfortunate love story...but I can tell you more about too, if that helps" she sighed, leaning back in her chair. "Like I said, I did develop...feelings. A relationship developed, but it didn't last long because I was finally beginning to realize that he was not the man I had seen in him for a while. I managed to escape, when I met him again he actually saved me, I unintentionally developed feelings, but it didn't last long. After having been captured I did spent a few more weeks with him while I was recovering", she kept explaining. She couldn't quite remember how long it had been since rotations took longer over there, but I'd hadn't been more than two weeks...perhaps three. "He was just a Sith Champion. I never heard of him again and it's been over a year...I dont intent to change that ever again and I'm also not sure whether I'll heal a Sith again". This had gotten her in trouble again...this had made her trust a Sith again. Falling for such a ploy twice was two times too much. While she would keep using her healing abilities, she would probably never pick up a Sith she had fought herself and fix him up so that he could go run and repeat worse mistakes all over again. She was so done with that.

Zathria couldn't help but comment when Hailee mentioned her "unfortunate love story." Frankly, the Justicar was baffled by the nonchalance with which she talked about it, and it caused an almost dumb stare from the Knight for a moment.

How could she be this naive?

Hailee, we just had a member of the Order betray and massacre hundreds of people on Yavin and then you walk in here, corrupted lightsaber in hand that you seem completely undisturbed by, you tell me you've crossed lines to stay alive and that you've run away with a Sith Champion, and then you act shocked that you're being questioned about it, she said. Her tone carried more harshness than it had the entire time they'd spoken up until now. Something about her response had just been... too passive for the Knight's taste.

This isn't some summer fling we're discussing. You've admitted to developing a relationship with an enemy who is bent on geocoding our Order and conquering the galaxy. If we were any other government body, you would be executed for treason, she let this words sink in for a moment. It was the only saving grace for the woman that the Jedi were not the executing types, but Zathria wanted no questions about the gravity of the situation.

And we have yet to even reach your actions at Onderon nor have you volunteered any information about that despite my repeated attempts to get you to share with me what is going on. I hope you understand exactly how this looks from my side of the room. You can say you haven't stumbled into the darkness all you want, but your actions tell me a very different story about the life you've been living, she said.

When she suddenly chimed in when she was talking about that 'love' story, she immediately shook her head. The sudden harshness suprised her and she didn't like how she was getting accused now. "With all due respect...after everything you've outlined now, are you accusing me of similar things? I'm not shocked...My actions might look suspicious and you have all the rights to ask for clarity, but I am not one of them. I haven't betrayed the Order. I was never planning on doing such a thing. I helped defend Yavin! I defended Onderon, I defended New Alderaan. When I was first captured, I was defending a planet as well in the name of the Order. I've never done anything different! Like I said: I'm pretty sure that as a justicar, you would be able to tell if I was lying. I'm not lying to myself either. I'm giving you nothing but the truth. I was younger, inexperienced even and while I fell for the wrong person in a moment of weakness, I've never fallen to the dark side! I might have been on my knees, but I immediately got back up and I would never edge any closer to this abyss!". She paused here, calming herself once again. The times in which Hailee was quick-tempered were actually over, and yet she couldn't believe that she was being accused of such things, which was why she actively started controlling herself again.

The next words hit her hard as she knew they were true. Falling in love with the enemy was everything but good, but she hadn't been able to stop her feelings back then. "I know that this was a mistake. I was looking past those differences though. I tried not to see the Sith, but the human behind and he did show me that for a while. But like I said: Sith don't change. I learnt that now. Their humanity is overwritten by the corruption deep inside them. That's what the dark side causes..." when she spoke now, there was a decent amount of sadness in her voice, because she had to say it out aloud another time. She had giving the wrong people another chance and she had realized that Sith couldn't be saved...

"I'm not withholding any details. I've told you what is going on. Call it a helpers' complex, but I tried hard to see the good in them. I was convinced I would be able to save them, perhaps redeem them even. I thought there was more to them than the darkness, I was hopeful...but apparently there wasn't. I've learnt that lesson now. I couldn't change them, but they didn't change me either" she let out a sigh, her emerald gaze wandering to the floor. "Someone once told me that darksiders can never heal, because Force healing is a fully light sided power. Isn't it prove enough that I can still heal?". She somehow felt like regardless of what she said, it didn't matter. The justicar was already convinced that she, too, was well beyond saving, even though from her point of view, this wasn't even close to the truth. Ronan had tried to lead her astray, but he had failed. The conversations with Caelian had even strengthened her beliefs into the light side and the Jedi. It still felt like they were accusing the wrong person.
