For three weeks the village of Ethbor had been suffering under the perils of the forest. For years, the children of the town had been warned of stories of the hermit in the woods. No one knew where he came from or what he did, but the rumors about him had grown over the past thirty years. Mothers told their children that he kidnapped anyone wandering into the woods while others said he worshiped a long-forgotten monster. Most of the adults living in the small fishing village didn't believe any of the stories at all. Sightings were thought to be the tales of children with overactive imaginations. Whoever or whatever story you believed, no one could deny anymore that there was something very wrong going on in the forest.

Creatures that had never been seen before had been sighted on the edge of the town. Eerie noises were heard in the night, and even the bravest of the villagers didn't dare make their way out at night alone anymore after one of the hunters had gone missing two weeks earlier.

The village was poor, but a posting had been put up for help. It had taken another two weeks for anyone to even consider it, but it wasn't the money that had drawn Talak to the village: it was the stories he'd heard. Unfortunately, he wasn't the only person. Since arriving, he'd already seen three other mercenaries - two of whom looked like they didn't know the first thing about mercenary work - all gathered around and looking to find the source of the disturbance and deal with it. The restlessness that Tal felt extended beyond just the people, though. It seemed to infect the forests around as well. Something unnatural had settled over this place, and that was what Talak wanted to find an answer to.
