I don't want to be on the republic, jedi or sith team but the approved private factions seem all inactive. Could anyone guide me in a certain direction or should I be a freelancer and just rp in randon skirmishes?

Well, firstly the Republic aren't a faction at the moment xD it's Jedi, Sith and Mandalorians. Second, nothing's stopping you from making an independant character that goes off to do whatever. Third, we're also going to shift to a new Timeline in december, so you'd only have to deal with the current factions for a few months before getting a whole bunch of new ones to pick from a few thousand years in the past.

Hey there. Welcome to the forum.

Yeah. In addition to what Kuroshi said. There are some active indy factions even though there isn't much going on in their sub forums. The Royal House of Naboo, Blackbirds (not to tout my own horn), the Shadow Syndicate, and the Protectorate are active indy factions with active missions up for them I know of off the top of my head.

But yeah, you do have the option of an indie character not affiliated with any of the factions.

Hope to see you RPing in any capacity!

With my Indie characters I typically get involved with both Independent and Main factions.

Being neutral in the war is an option, but most characters are bias towards one side or the other and will therefore contribute in aiding that side to some degree.
For instance, a smuggler helping the Jedi because he hates the Empire's trade restrictions, or, a bounty hunter aiding the Sith not just for the credits, but because the Jedi inadvertently killed a very close friend of his years ago.

Having an Independent character gives the player the ability to get involved in RPs with a wider range of characters, but it also means that said player will have to be responsible for driving plots forward. Joining a faction allows you to participate directly and consistently in their missions. These missions have predetermined plots with obstacles the characters must overcome. They give you a writing prompt and it makes it a bit easier to jump into roleplaying if you do not like writing starter posts.

With an Independent character it is up to you to build relations with other characters while driving your own character's plot forward.

Simply put: If you like doing things in a group, joining a faction is a great way to do so, and as the factions strength grows a sense of accomplishment can be felt that together you impacted the entire galaxy.

While Indies can certainly affect the galaxy as a whole as well, their stories are often more personal. Your motivation to RP usually lies in the progression of the character's life rather than the outcome of conflicts and politics.
